computer repair

My wife and I dealt with this company in December 2016 and January 2017. She first brought her iphone to the store for installation of a screen protector and was happy with the results. She later brought my iphone in for the same purpose. (Since then my protector has peeled slightly, but that’s a triviality here.) Then she brought in her laptop for cleaning, she was told what would be done, and she was satisfied with the result. So far, so good. We now decided, one by one, to have PNC try to speed up our slow-running desktops. Our top priority was having our computers returned cleaned but otherwise in exactly the state when they were picked up—all software configuration present and intact. 1. MULTIPLE times, in varying ways, I asked the owner, Henry (whose English otherwise seemed very good), will you return the computers to us cleaned but otherwise in their current state so I won’t have to do ANY work on them? Each time, he assured me this would be true. It wasn’t. He never said they'd reinstall Windows, with all the upheaval that has involved. (The company did in the end reinstall SOME software previously on the computers.) I prefer to think this was a translation problem—which does not make the business mistake ok—rather than anything more nefarious. 2. I ended up without my computer for over 2 weeks. 3. Somehow, several hard drives, a rare and extensively used programmable keyboard, and an external hard drive mount were all non-functional at the end of this protracted non-solution. I was assured that none of this was their fault, even though all of these peripherals had been working fine when I turned them over. A USB 3.0 hub of mine disappeared. 4. Along the way, we were told that having too many attached hard drives impeded desktop efficiency, so the company took all our drives to transfer to a single drive for each of us. Instead, we got back a SINGLE drive with BOTH of our previous drive sets on it. We had to figure out exactly where her set of files was and then transfer them to a separate hard drive--more of our time. 5. An unsolved question remains of why multiple hard drives had previously worked on my wife’s computer but could no longer operate together, so that now her computer won’t boot with some of them attached. 6. Early on, a deadline was barely met for returning my wife’s computer. Later, we were told that the Windows reinstall on her PC was to meet the deadline. (No rationalization was ever offered for what happened to my desktop.) We should have been told that, because we would not have let the repair go ahead. Deadlines should be judiciously promised, but far more important to us than frustration with a missed deadline was getting the repair done the way we wanted—or not making it at all. 7. Along the way, an overnight, very scary problem (we slept little that night) occurred because during a phone call, Ryan and I didn’t realize we were talking about two different things. Frustrating as this was, and even though I THOUGHT I’d been clear (of course, I can’t know that for sure), I do understand that such things can happen, but I must wonder whether it could have been avoided. I will give credit that Ryan actually came to the house on his day off, when we eventually figured out the confusion. 8. I then sent the company an e-mail saying explicitly that I didn’t want the same result with my computer, and I included several related informational notes. I was assured that an image would be taken of the current state of my C: drive so that it could be restored if need be. (I don’t know what ever became of this seemingly unfulfilled promise.) 9. Near the end of this extended cycle of home visits and shop repairs, Henry demanded I pay more than the original hefty sum on which we’d agreed. My response catalogued the history of the work, and expressed amazement that Henry would seek even more money from me for problems that were of their making—and that had not even been completely fixed. Indeed, I suggested I should bill the company at my hourly rate for all the time I was investing that they had seemingly promised I would NOT have to do. I also expressed the hope that Henry was paying Ryan double-time for coming to our house on his day off, since the problem seemed to be rooted in Henry’s failures to understand and/or pass on crucial information. Not greatly to my surprise, I never received a reply. 10. On top of that, my computer is running about as slowly as before this whole mess began. It is perhaps fortunate that I’m not normally a litigious fellow, because even as I write all this, I become enraged all over again. Caveat emptor.
