Very nice folks, great service. Reliable and responsive.
Description of Work: When we called them, Nutmeg came out out promptly and assessed our new furnace needs. They had the best price and we had a history of them servicing our furnace in the middle of a snowstorm so we thought them to be service oriented. They showed up on time and finished the job on time and very neatly. So far the new furnace is great and we are already seeing the $$$ benefits of the more efficient system they installed.

Update 11/29/11: The heat is working again - pipes were bled yesterday afternoon. I appreciate the quick turnaround in getting Chris back to my house to get the system working. Note - the 3-year-old high-efficiency Crown boiler I purchased 3 years ago (NOT from Nutmeg) is full of rust and is not the best quality, and the pipes and radiators in the house are old. Chris from Nutmeg certainly did his best to repair the system and get it going again. For the past several weeks, Henry has been very communicative and responsive. Also, I have not been billed yet for any of the work that has been done - I was told I'll get a bill once all the work has been completed. I truly appreciate this, since it indicates to me that Nutmeg's main concern is getting its customers' problems fixed first. Update 11/28/11: It's been over a month, and the furnace is still not fixed. Had heat temporarily, from 11/8 - 11/22, while parts for the permanent fix were on order. Permanent fixes were claimed to be made on 11/23, but the furnace never came back on. Nutmeg has been very responsive over the past several weeks, but I have concerns about the actual work being done. It's almost December, and I do not have a working furnace or any idea when I might have one - a nightmare for any homeowner. Update 11/4/11: Henry from Nutmeg reached out to me a few days ago, and has been keeping me updated on the progress of the work that his company is doing to try and get my furnace back in working order, including scheduling a visit by the furnace company rep to see the damage, to see if there is anything they can do. At this point, I am very happy with Nutmeg's responsiveness, so will continue to adjust my original review as needed. (Original review:) A technician came to diagnose problems with our furnace on 10/26 - one week ago - and told me that Nutmeg would call with an estimate "soon". The experience appeared very promising since Chris, the technician, seemed very pleasant and knowledgeable, and the customer service rep who set up my appointment was also friendly and helpful. It has now been a week, with no estimate. I have called Nutmeg 3 times to ask what the status of the estimate is, and have gotten no updates or any call-backs. (Spoke with a person the first two times last week - both on 10/28, and left a message the last time - 11/1.) Our power is out anyway because of the storm, but it would be helpful to know whether someone is actually ordering parts or working on an estimate for repairing the furnace. We're going to have to assume otherwise, and call someone else! Frustrating and disappointing.
Description of Work: 11/28/11 - Chris returned, and bled all radiators. System is working well now! 11/23/11 - Chris returned, worked for 3 hours with backup, and claimed boiler was completely fixed. It never started working again. There is still no information on the actual cause, since the connection mentioned during the previous visit was found to have been well-tightened upon installation. 11/8/11 - Technician (Chris) and manufacturer's representative made a temporary fix - boiler worked until 11/22/11. Root-cause update this time was that piping was fine since the 2nd heating zone (basement) wasn't hooked up. New possible cause was that a connection inside the boiler wasn't tightened appropriately during installation. 10/26/11 - Diagnosis only, on a 3-year-old high-efficiency gas furnace not working due to a water leak inside, that had caused water and rust damage. Initial claim was that this was due to poor installation, and that repair and re-piping were needed.

It went very well. Chris was patient and professional. He took measurements throughout the house to determine the exact boiler size required, then, after listening to my wishes, suggested a replacement system that would meet them. His quote covered everything we had discussed and included extensive guarentees covering the quality and performance of the finished work.
Description of Work: Nutmeg (Chris) responded to a request for quote on replacing an existing residential boiler. He was on time, knowledgible and provided a quote that was competitive, complete and contained unique and impressive performance guarentees. For reasons outside of Nutmeg's control I did not continue with their offer but will call on them again for future requiirements and recomend they be included on the bidders list of anyone who is looking to have neating or air conditioning work done..

After hurricane Irene I discovered that a portion of my basement was flooded. After determining there were no outside leaks and that the water wasn't coming from the hot water heater, I realized that the water was coming from my air conditioning unit. Nutmeg sent a field technician out who showed up on time and was very friendly. He quickly determined that the the condensate drain was clogged, that this was caused by a build up over a long period of time and that it was not related to the storm we had. I had also asked him to look to see if he noticed anything wrong with my furnace because I had been told it was as old as the air conditioning unit, which is over 20 years old. The technician told me that the furnace was from 2005 and told me that if anyone tried to tell me it was old they were trying to take advantage of the fact that I don't know much about heating/AC equipment. I appreciated his honesty and that he was taking the time to help me learn more about the heating/cooling system. He also explained the different parts of the air conditioning unit to me and said that if I found more water leaking after he unclogged the drain that it could mean that the condensate pan had cracked. He told me that with the age of the air conditioner and the work that it would take to fix something like that, I might want to consider buying a new unit so that I wouldn't waste my money repairing something that was so old. I didn't feel like he was pressuring me and I liked that he told me what my options would be and what he would do in my situation. Thankfully I haven't had any water problems since he cleaned the drain so it seems as if I have some time to prepare to buy a new air conditioner. Today (two days later) I received a follow-up call from Nutmeg. They said that the technician wanted to make sure that I didn't have any water problems after he left. They wanted to make sure that my unit wasn't showing signs of a larger problem. I was impressed that they cared enough to call back to make sure they had completely fixed my problem. I told them that I would be calling them when I decided to replace my air conditioning unit. The man on the phone was very helpful and gave me a useful tip. He told me if I knew I was going to replace the unit, to call during the off season so that they can give me all the information I need to make a decision before I am forced to do so because of the unit failing. He explained that they always hate to see people feeling rushed to make a decision and that they want to give them plenty of time to decide what is the best option for them. Again, there was no sign of pressure to buy. I appreciated his advice and will be calling them in the future to get an estimate. Overall I had a great experience with Nutmeg and would recommend them to my friends.
Description of Work: The technician cleaned out a clogged condensate drain, checked the operating pressure, checked the air flow, tested for proper drainage, and replaced a filter.

Amending my orignal rating due to the resolution after a discussion with the owner. So I'm willing to share the blame. Once I rescheduled the estimate and spoke with the company rep I was very pleased. Current A ratings are based on that meeting. When all was said and done I got my list down to two contractors, with Nutmeg being one of them. Yes I would recommend them in the future. And overall I feel they derserve the A rating (an A- if I factor in my original problem).

It's a Saturday night and I hear a dripping sound in the area of my 1979 heat pump/central air unit. The closet, carpet and walls were soaked. The unit was leaking water from somewhere. I went online, joined Angie's List, called 2 contractors 24 hr emergency line - on a Saturday night. Nutmeg called back within 30 minutes, gave me possible causes and weekend rates over the phone. Eric was here in 30 minutes, fixed the problem (clogged condensation drain pipe), and left within 30 minutes. He was very professional and thorough, checking the unit for other possible causes. He even cleaned up the water in my closet. Nutmeg Mechanical just gained a regular customer! Thank you!!
Description of Work: Cleaned out condensation drain pipe, examined unit for other possible leaks. Cleaned up water, reassembled unit with filter.

I can't say enough about the professionalism of each person from Nutmeg Mechanical. My initial call to Nutmeg put me in touch with Chris Wierzbicki in sales. Chris was great - he was able to comprehend and address my needs, was prompt setting up an appointment and arrived on time for our first meeting. While I anticipated this being a complex and difficult job, he took everything in stride and put my mind at ease immediately. Within three days, he had researched and priced all the equipment, had a proposal to me. I signed the contract, the equipment was ordered and a meeting was set up with the job forman to make the final decisions on how the work would be done. The day the work began, the forman (Neil) and two technicians arrived on schedule and started dismantling the old equipment and assembling the new air handler. The work created a lot of debris and dust, but at day's end, everything had been cleaned and wiped down and epuipment stacked neatly and out of the way. Day two brought the crane and the new compressor. Everything moved like clockwork - new unit up, old unit down, wiring and ductwork moved right along. I was extremely happy with the quality of work - the professionalism of each Nutmeg employee and the entire process. I highly recommend Nutmeg Mechanical and intend to use them again for another home.
Description of Work: Nutmeg Mechanical installed a replacement, but much larger, Lennox Elite central a/c system into a third floor condominium. The work required a crane to lift the compressor to the roof (65' up) and a lot of hauling of equipment up three flights of stair. Additionally, I expanded the area covered by the system, so new ductwork and vents needed to be added. The old compressor needed to be lowered from the roof and the old air handler dismantled and removed.

Last Friday evening I smelled gas in our basement. I called the gas company and they came quickly and red tagged our old furnace. Because it was the original furnace (1954) it wasn?t really worth the expense of what would only be a temporary fix. In addition, we had been having problems with our AC so we knew it was time for a new energy efficient system. Although we needed a new system quickly, it was a big job so we wanted to get several estimates. On Monday we met with three good companies (we had also talked to someone on Saturday). Nutmeg Mechanical was our last appointment of the day and by the time Chris showed up I thought to myself do we really need another estimate? But everything changed when he walked through the door. I was immediately impressed when he asked permission to enter our house and put booties on over his shoes to protect our floors! He then gave us a quick overview of what to expect during his visit. After talking to three contractors we thought we already knew everything we needed to know and had a good idea of what we wanted. However, Chris continued to educate us and picked up on several things that other contractors either didn?t notice or failed to explain. He was extremely bright and knowledgeable and very thorough. We discussed several different options and he gave us all of the information we needed to decide what was best for our home and our budget. There was no pressure whatsoever, he simply took the time to educate us and answer all of our questions. After he left I was shocked to realize that he had spent two hours with us. My husband and I were sold. Chris and his team arrived at our house at 7:30 am the next morning. A team of four guys (maybe there were more there at the beginning) worked nonstop from 7:30 am to 3:45 pm. They were able to complete the entire job in one day. All of the guys were fairly young, however it was clear that they were professionals and took their jobs very seriously. Everyone on the team was extremely professional, polite, friendly, and willing to answer questions at anytime. When the job was done the team leader (unfortunately I forget his name) came upstairs to go over everything with me. Next he took me downstairs where the rest of the team was waiting to show me their work. They explained everything to me and wouldn?t leave until they were sure that all of my questions were answered. They were extremely conscientious and detail-oriented and clearly took pride in their work and a job well done. They left the basement cleaner than they found it and it was obvious that the work had been completed to the highest of standards. Nutmeg Mechanical is a family owned business (Chris is the son of one of the founders) and there is no question that they do things right the first time and have the utmost integrity. I highly recommend Nutmeg Mechanical and will never need to call anyone else!
Description of Work: Replaced and removed our old gas furnace and AC units with a new very energy efficient system. Reinstalled our humidifier and tied it into the new thermostat. Also moved our water heater and lined chimney to bring water heater up to code.

Initially our experience with Nutmeg was painful. They did not install the hot water heater the way they agreed to install it. To their credit, they vented it in the only way that it could be done safely and appropriately, but my expectation was that they would discuss it with me before they installed it differently that what we had agreed on. In addition there were problems that came up immediately after the installation and we went two days with limited heat. They were not as responsive to our problems as I would expect. I had several conversations with their management and they acknowledged that it should have been handled better and have taken steps to ensure that it doesn't happen again. They have also addressed the problem with the hot water heater at significant cost to them and in a manner that meets our needs.

The leak in the Geo-thermal heating system was over 200 feet underground and required a lot of digging, earth moving, and restoration to rectify the problem. Nutmeg Mechanical Services stood behind their work 110% and did the whole huge job under their warranty program, even down to reseeding the yard. The Geo-thermal system is wonderful and very efficient for our heating and cooling needs, but when a problem develops, it can be messy and time consuming to fix, as was the case here. We were pleasantly surprised to find how solidly they stood behind their work and the system and would highly recommend them to anyone.
