Working with Oliver was great. After having used other contractors in the past, I was surprised at the ease with which this project was completed. Oliver was very easy to reach - he responded to all of my emails and phone calls very quickly. He was prompt, knowledgeable, and very friendly. He always came to the house on time, and he was very patient as we deliberated about what type of flooring to use. I felt he advised us very well on the materials and wanted to be sure we were happy with our selection. He took his work very seriously, and made sure that everything was done exactly right. It was very obvious that Oliver takes great pride in his projects and doesn't cut corners. The tile floor is absolutely beautiful and the craftsmanship of the tile installer was outstanding. The tile installer was extremely efficient, professional, expert, and friendly. Oliver is very easy to work with and I will call on him again for future projects.
Description of Work: Oliver installed porcelain tile in our entryway.

Still getting information and making decisions on how extensive of a renovation we want. Unfortunately our home does not have a hatchway and we need to have one installed before we turn the basement into additional living space. We need to know how much the hatchway will add to the overall cost of the project before deciding exactly what we are going to have done. No doubt in our minds, that the provider will do an excellent job.
Description of Work: Provider has been at our home twice and the second time brought all of the individuals to look at the job so we can get accurate quote. We are awaiting the quote and will compare to other quotes we have received before making a decision. Very professional and knowledgeable. Olive Beer is excellent at making recommendations and suggestions and appears to be genuinely comitted to working with us for a good price and quality project.

The initial offer was a good price, and I knew I would good great quality from his team. He was prompt and very focused over 3 days to complete the setup and painting, including a challenging 25 foot high living space with a cathedral ceiling. The quality was great and I would use Oliver again for quality painting.

Working with Oliver was a great experience, and quality of his work was excellent. Initially, his offer was in the middle of the cost range, however, I knew that I would get great quality from him and his team, as this was a focus on our discussions prior to a formal offer. During the project, I was informed of when his team was visiting and the key next steps. He was also open to some very minor scope adjustments as well, without increasing the overall cost. The teams were very professional and considerate, and I was able to review the status and quality during the project. I would certainly use Bauhaus Construction again on future projects, and would recommend them to others. Attached a few pictures of before and after.

We told him we wanted a 3 season room before we knew it he was convincing my wife and I into a 4 season room, my wife and I said wait a minute this is not what we want. When I told him everything was much bigger than we wanted. Again told him what we wanted he emailed me back stating I guess I'm not the right contractor for you. As I read in other people's reviews it is his way or no way. Which I agree with. I have no doubt he would do a great job using only the best material, but it is what the customer wants not the contractor. I have signed on with another contractor yesterday afternoon who is of very good reputation who is going to build us what we want. Again Oliver is very professional, punctual. I would not choose him because it was his way forget what the customer wants. If you don't mind this I'm sure he would do a great job.

This member contacted us on July 19, 2013 requesting an estimate for an addition. Upon our arrival he showed us the back of the house where he wanted the addition done. The area was 33’ x 12’, expanding across the back of the house and included a front entry door, 2 sliding doors, exterior stairs leading to the pool, an additional 9 windows (new construction), siding and roof. The member stated all he wanted was a shell. His brother was to complete the electrical work on the interior and he would complete the insulation and drywall. We were asked to provide the cost of a full basement (that would need to be dug out) and also a concrete slab. It should be noted that during our initial visit the member expressed his concern over electrical wiring leading from the basement to the pool and garage. The member did not want to dig out the wires as he stated that it had taken him several days to install them in the ground. We did advise the member that the 2nd floor windows would need to be shortened because of egress (fire escape code). We also asked him to speak with his wife about the windows and door placement and that we would need to return to discuss the details of the project. We contacted the member on several occasions via both e-mail and telephone asking to set up a 2nd meeting with both he and his wife. After several days had passed with no response, we contacted the member again asking when we can meet, as our initial discussion was preliminary. When the member did responded to our e-mail his only concern was the cost of the project. We did provide the member with a “rough” estimate and again indicated that we need to meet with them to discuss the details. Several weeks passed before the member contacted us for a 2nd meeting which took place on the 7th of September 2013. As we arrived with our foreman the member stated that he no longer wanted a 33 ‘ addition, but now wanted it to be 22’, in order to save on cost. We suggested that the addition be on a concrete slab due to the low clearance, which was about 20” to the ground versus being built on piers. In our opinion piers, ledger board and floor joists would result in deterioration versus a concrete slab due to water build up and lack of air circulation. A concrete slab is also more cost effective. We again advised the member that the electrical wires would need to be removed and as his brother is an electrician he would know what would need to be done to reconnect the wiring to the pool and garage. On the 14th of September we received an e-mail from the member stating that he had spoken with the Electrical / Building Inspector for the Town of Wethersfield about the wires and if they needed to be removed. According to the member the inspector advised him that there was no need to remove the wires and that he can dig around them. We have been in the building industry for 37 years and have never been told that you can just dig around wires, as this is contrary to actual building codes. We perform our work according to regulations and just don’t’ dig in areas where there are electrical wires in the ground. It was also in this e-mail that the member advised us that he had been lead astray from what he and his wife actually wanted, as he had gotten caught up with everything that both we and another 2 contractors were telling him. He indicated that he wanted an enclosed deck with “basic windows and sliders”. We never had an actual conversation with this member and his wife regarding the project. His concern was only about the overall cost and the wires in the ground. Based upon this members lack of communication, expectations and demands we decided to pass on the job as we felt that we would not be able to satisfy the member. We wish the member the best of luck with his project.

Oliver emailed us a detailed contract, and everything on the contract was done in a timely fashion and with excellent workmanship. This job cost a bit more than we expected, but our expectations may be at fault because we have little experience with this sort of repair. Basically, a small sinkhole developed near our front steps and under the front walkway, making the walkway dip down, and pulling the front porch away from the house (opening up a gap between the front door and the front porch and damaging the siding where the porch roof was connected). We had some difficulty finding someone to even take on this job, so for us the cost was worthwhile. Oliver and his crew do things the right way, which is worth a lot to us, as it is very discouraging when a job needs to be redone later because the person you hired did not know what they were doing (one of the main reasons we joined Angie's List). We are already in the process of hiring Bauhaus again to do more work.
Description of Work: Removed existing concrete/stone front steps (which were pulling away from the house due to subsidence), repoured new steps, reset stones, reconstructed existing stone walkway leading up to front steps (was in bad shape also due to small sinkhole), and repaired damage to cedar siding on front of house damaged by sinking front steps.

We received a call from the member on April 15th. We scheduled an appointment and when we meet with the customer we asked what they would like to see in their kitchen. We provide them with a preliminary estimate, as a kitchen remodel takes a couple of weeks to decide upon on the materials and finalize the plans. We also advised them that we are not able to provide Formica countertops, as we do not have a fabrication facility. We only use granite, quarts or butcher-block countertops. It is incorrect for this member to state that it’s our way only. We perform our work pursuant to the building codes and regulations of the town where the job is being performed.

This member contacted us for an estimate to renovate a second floor bathroom. We provided a quote of $8,500 for labor which included the cost for permits, plumbing, electrical, sheetrock, paining, disposal container, etc. The only items that were not included were the plumbing fixtures, lighting fixtures and ceramic tiles. This was due to the fact that the member was not able to provide us with an idea of the style that she wanted and without that we were not able to quote her the same. It should be noted that after our initial meeting with the member, we asked her to check out the Kohler website for fixtures and also to visit a showroom to pick out ceramic tiles. We asked her to contact us with her research information, but the member never responded.

It took a couple of weeks for the custom window to come in and a couple of more weeks before the weather permitted Oliver to get started and put the window in. The job took a full day and the window looks great. Unfortunately, the business who shipped the window to Oliver forgot to include the screen that came with the window. Oliver got them on the phone immediately to tell them they still owed him the screen and he came back to install the screen as soon as he received it again. Oliver's skill as a carpenter is excellent and I would definitely recommend him to a friend or neighbor.
Description of Work: Oliver replaced a window in an upstairs bedroom that was leaking water when it rained to a downstairs bedroom ceiling. The solution to resolving the leak was to install a custom replacement window that was smaller and raising the bottom sill of the window several inches. Oliver did a very nice job and the problem with the leak has been resolved.

Oliver stopped by to give me an estimate for an upcoming job. While looking over the area (bathroom) he discovered a leak in the shower head - behind the wall- and spent a half hour of his time securing it and stopping the leak. He even went to the local hardware store to get materials because he wanted to be sure it was functional before leaving. Oliver was able to explain several options for the remodel. He was prompt, knowledgeable and highly professional. I would hire Bauhaus construction for my remodel job without hesitation.

Bauhaus Construction came to our home to look at renovating a second bathroom and kitchen. He stated he was uncomfortable with the size of the bathroom and what we wanted. We understood. He promised he would get back to us with his decision within a day or two. In respect to the kitchen, Bauhaus Construction led us to believe he could do what we were asking of him. New counter top, backsplash, and refinish the cabinets. He also promised to provide us with several websites for us to look at for other materials. Several days passed and we received nothing, I called him and was told he had sent us an email with the information talked about. Monday, July 8, I received an email from Bauhaus Construction stating, "i do appreciate you contacted us for your renovation needs. After thinking and talking with the building department, I?m going to pass on this job sorry about that. sincerely oliver" My husband and I were stunned as there was really no explanation. I immediately reached out to him through email to better understand their decision, and it became ugly. During his second email, he quoted us a price of $9,500.00 to do the kitchen. I am uncomfortable with Bauhaus Construction and would not recommend them.

This member contacted us on June 25, 2013 for a bathroom remodel. We contacted the member and scheduled an appointment on June 28th to review the project. At the time of our arrival, the member advised us that they wanted an existing bathroom located on the lower level of their residence remodeled into a handicapped bathroom. During the consultation we advised the member of our concerns and that we would need to speak with the building department regarding the regulations require for a handicapped bathroom. We advised the member that we would reach out to them via e-mail after we had completed some initial research. After further investigation into this project, we opined that we could not meet this member’s request. We based this on the fact that the location where they wanted the handicapped bathroom installed does not comply with the building codes. We contacted the member via e-mail to advise of our decision. It should be noted that it was at the end of our initial consultation that the member asked if we could look at their kitchen, as they wanted some ideas on this as a "future project". We provided some ideas of what could be done and asked that once they were ready to contact us, so that we could provide further information. The member had indicated that they were not and just wanted some ideas until they were. Since we passed on the bathroom project, we did not believe that the member would consider us for the kitchen, as they had expressed it was a “future project. After they received our response regarding the bathroom, they contacted us to inquire about the kitchen renovation. We responded to the member that the ideas we had discussed would come out to approximately $9,500.

Oliver Beer is a true craftsman. He insured that his work and those he contracted was perfect. No small detail was left undone. In fact, Oliver repeatedly went above and beyond without adding additional charges. He added additional trim to produce a superior finish on the cabinets, and hand crafted oak thresholds to transition from hardwood to tile. He actually did this in all 3 bathrooms, even though he hadn't done the original tile or hardwood for those rooms. If there was a door that wasn't closing properly he fixed it. He even refinished our oak dining room table as a "gift". He cleaned up every day and did his best to keep the dust under control as much as possible. I don't think there are many people like Oliver who take such obvious pride and care with their work and we are truly grateful for the superior job he did. He left us with a beautifully remodelled first floor!
Description of Work: Determination of cause of ceiling leak in Dining room. Fixed problem (outside vinyl siding), repaired, scraped, plastered and painted ceilings in dining, family, living rooms and kitchen. Installed crown molding in dining and living rooms. Painted dining, family, living rooms and kitchen walls. Installed new lighting fixtures in DR and Kitchen. Completed remodel of kitchen, including refinishing of oak cabinetry with new hardware, wall repair, installation of additional recessed and undercabinet lighting, installation of quartz countertops and tile backsplash with glass mosaic insert. Installed new appliances, stainless sink and faucet and garbage disposal. Refinished hardwoods floors in kitchen and family room.

Awful overall experience. He did call me back right away after I left a message and we set up a meeting. First, when he came over, everything i showed him that I wanted done his response was "this is very expensive". I was willing to overlook that because I figured he was being cautious or whatever. So even though I wasnt completely impressed with the contact, he had such good reviews I decided to use him anyway. I called him, left a message stating i wanted him to come do the work and waited almost two weeks and I still have not gotten a reply. Furthermore, I inquired about a spiral staircase - he said people do not use those anymore and they arent allowed by the town. Well I called the town to double check, and Oliver was wrong. The stairs ARE allowed where i want to put them. Not sure what this guys deal is/was with me but I would never use him nor would I recommend him.

This member had contacted us to do various projects. The first was to finish a job that had been started by two other contractors. The first contractor had initially installed a door leading to the 2nd floor staircase. A second contractor had then installed a 2nd door to access the same set of stairs from the adjoining wall and also modified / moved several steps leading to the 2nd floor. We explained to the member that the installation of the doors and modification of the staircase was not done to code and that it created a hazard in the event of a fire, due to doors and small width of the staircase. We advised her that we would recommend that the doors be removed and the walls closed up in order to bring the staircase back to its original state. The second job was for the installation of a spiral staircase that would lead from the 1st floor into an unfinished basement. The staircase that currently leads into the basement was so low that I had to be careful as to not hit my head on the header going down into the basement. We explained that a spiral staircase could not be installed in such a small space and furthermore the house does not provide the necessary structural support. The final job was to remove a wall and door in the basement leading out into the back yard and replace it with a sliding glass door. We explained to her that under normal circumstances the cost to have a sliding glass door installed is about $3,000. Due to the structural issues we needed to consult both the building department and our carpenter to ensure that the job could be done in a safe manner. We asked her to be patient with us and to give us time to complete our research into the issues that we had raised. Furthermore we felt uncomfortable completing the jobs on the basis that the previous work had not been done to code and that this member had advised us that she has legal actions pending in court against two other contractors.

Oliver Beer, owner of Bauhaus Construction, came to the house in Feb. to discuss what I wanted done. He was polite, knowledgable, listened carefully, and a few days later sent me an email with a quote. Dave Monahan, who was to install the tiles, came a few days later and went over the proceedure and materials he was going to use. After I had purchased the tiles, Dave came to put them in. He was punctual, extremely clean (covered all open spaces so dust was contained), and did an exemplary job taking out the old floor, laying the foundation and installing the tiles. He had to work in a small confined space, which made the job harder, but within 3 days, the job was complete. Oliver came on the second day to see how things were going and came back when the job was done. A couple of tiles that had absorbed the finish coat differently, looked darker than the others. Dave came and replaced them. The floor looks really wonderful. I have had a lot of work done on my house the past few years and these two people are two of the best. They will go in my Hall of Fame! I highly recommend Bauhaus Construction. Jeanne

I reached out to Oliver based off his wonderful reviews on Angielist. He was extremely responsive and we met in under 48 hrs. Since then he provided an initial price, and then brought in subs and provided a revised number. Amazingly the price changed by over 50k between the two rounds and when I asked Oliver to explain the delta I was asked for a 5k dollar deposit to "develop a proposal". We have no problem with deposits, but who ever heard of a deposit to develop a detailed quote. He fully expected us to hand over money based on a 1 line email that said your project will cost XXX. A huge disappointment.

This Angie’s List member contacted us on the 20th of February with a request for a large remodel of his older home that was built in 1963. This included extending a porch, raising a roofline, installation of windows, interior and exterior doors, two garage doors, a new complete roof, sliding door leading onto a large deck that he wanted built, creating a new dining room area, a new laundry room, the removal of a centrally located fireplace with chimney that was located on the 1st floor and a complete kitchen remodel. The Member had his own structural plans for his project. He also had rough drawings that were “not” detailed and provided “no” accurate measurements. Based upon our initial visit the Member was provided a “rough” estimate of $134,800 and told that we could not be held to this number until we came out with the plumber and further consulted with our electrician and carpenter. We went out a 2nd time to the Members residence with our plumber. It was during this visit that we raised the issue that the floor plans were ‘incomplete’. The Member, in a very condescending manner, proceeded to take a pen and scribble in the lines where the new interior walls would be and stated “… Here are your walls”. It was after this 2nd visit that we provided the Member with an updated “rough” estimate of $182,500. The price increase was due the amount of work that was required. This is an older home in which one can encounter difficulties especially due to the fact that the heating system would need to be reconfigured for the kitchen, dining room and living room areas, as well as an extended amount of electrical changes to adhere to building codes. The Member indicated that this “rough” estimate was still within his budget and it was at this time that he requested a written detailed estimate, without giving us any indication of a commitment. In order to secure the job, the Member was asked for a ‘deposit’, which would be deducted from the total cost. He was advised that providing a detailed written estimate takes several weeks working with the Member directly. This is why they are provided with an initial “rough” estimate that will be then finalized. The Member was also advised that we would need to bring in our own architectural designer to review the Members structural plans and provide us with detailed blue prints in order to ensure that there would be no complications. We wish this member the best of luck with his project.
We were very pleased with the quality and professional work ethic . Oliver was careful to explain why the water damage had occurred and. What he would do to correct it . We feel confident that he accomplished that . We were pleased that he made every effort to reduce the mess and heat loss as much as possible during construction in the frigid Dec / Jan timeframe. They built tents to reduce the spread of construction mess and reduce heat loss. The crew was actually very personable and a pleasure to have in the house. We would not hesitate to call them again for future projects. Overall the work was excellent , the professionalism , the concern for doing the job the right way and desire to be cost effective as well as the ease of working with the Bauhaus construction team made this a pleasant experience.

This meant correcting the placement of the walls to eliminate the cause of the water damage. Insulation , plywood ,cedar shakes, trim and flashing were installed. The damaged flooring needed to be torn out and was replaced with porcelain tile. A doggie door was installed with pressure treated steps to the dog run. The existing closet was re shelved to be able to contain dog crates. For the ice damage to the other rooms the existing damaged plaster ceilings needed to be removed and were replaced with drywall The affected areas were treated with a mold preventative and insulated and taped and skimmed ready for painting. This was done in three bedrooms and two bathrooms. We also had new gutters and guards installed and warming wires put on the roof to prevent any future ice damage. There was a new storm door put on the front door and a new set of stairs installed in the Bilco door entrance to the basement.

We contacted Bauhaus Construction regarding tiling our bathroom floor and replacing the toilet. Oliver Beer came to our house within one day to look at the job. Oliver gave us advice on where to look at tile and suggested sizes and shapes. Within a few days we had a written estimate. The job was going to cost more than we had budgeted, so I contacted Oliver and he worked with us to modify certain aspects of the job to bring it within our budget. Shortly after we confirmed the price, Oliver began removing the old floor and toilet. At that point, he discovered additional problems with a complicated plumbing problem and called in a plumber to resolve the issue. The plumber came the next day and fixed the problem. Oliver then proceeded with tiling the floor and within a few days the tile was completed and the new toilet was installed. Oliver then returned to fix a few things that he was not satisfied with, and even replaced the caulking around the shower, despite the fact that that was never part of the job! The end result is beautiful.
Description of Work: Oliver Beer, owner of Bauhaus Construction, is very professional and easy to work with. He responds immediately to phone calls and promptly answers questions and resolves any issues. He is a pleasure to deal with. His work was very high quality and he is meticulous about getting things done the right way. He obviously knows a great deal about all aspects of construction and knows when something needs specialized services--for example, of a plumber. I felt at all times that Oliver was taking great care to make sure that nothing was overlooked. He didn't cut any corners, and yet kept the cost as low as possible. Overall, I would rate him excellent in terms of quality of work, cost, and professionalism.

They installed a diagonal patterned tile in the foyer through the hallway and into the bathroom. He also installed a new vent system for our dryer which now works much better. He stuck to his quote, his was on time with arrival and finish. Nice guy.
Description of Work: Oliver and his crew took out an old tiled foyer, old carpet and old vinyl.

I contacted Bauhaus to request a quote. Told Oliver that the job might be small, but he was willing to provide an estimate anyway. Bauhaus was prompt in providing the estimate, and it turns out the job wasn't all that small. Ultimately we went with another contractor. Our experience with Bauhas was very positive and we would consider them for future work.
Description of Work: Interior painting of master bedroom, bath & closets
First and foremost, Oliver is an engineer by education. His education brings to the table value that is unmatched by others in the trade. While contracting trade skills are extremely important, understanding from an engineering perspective brings Oliver to a different plane. That being said, I cannot say enough about Oliver and his hard working crew (Keif and JB). They are artists in their tasks. Oliver spent nearly a month with us, rebuilding a den that suffered from decades of neglect (prior owner) due largely to improperly designed soffits and a neglected roof. Oliver quickly and efficiently identified and fixed the damaged soffits and walls (the roof was tackled just weeks before we met Oliver). Oliver identified various areas of potential concern, such as aged insulation and improper wiring. He provided us with very reasonable options for addressing our concerns. During that time, he voluntarily imparted to us a veritable encyclopedia of home repair and maintenance information, and never sought additional funds for this help. At one point, when Oliver?s work was essentially complete, Oliver learned through a third party that we were having problems with the electrical system in the room (which was no fault of Oliver's). Owing nothing to us, and without expecting anything in return, Oliver called us, in the evening, and walked us through a spot-on fix. This assistance was well beyond expectations. I could continue identifying ways in which Oliver helped beyond the call, and I hope this explanation is at least partially illuminating. It was a pleasure working with a team of this dedication and commitment. As for responsiveness, I called Oliver on a Tuesday, he provided me with a quote on Wednesday and his team began work on Thursday. Within ten business days, the exterior rebuild was completed. The devil is in the finishing work, which took the remainder of the time, and Oliver was a champion all the way.
Description of Work: Rebuilt soffits, 10 feet of exterior wall rotted from water infiltration, installed insulation, painted, trimmed windows/walls/floor/door.

The work was done professionally with high quality. I think this is a company I will hire again if needed.
Description of Work: Kitchen backsplash was installed. After I picked up the tile from a local company, I contacted the owner and a crewed came to house for an estimate of costs. There was a piece of cabinet missing and the crew suggested to add a piece of wood as well. The price was fair and the installation date was set afterwards. Two crews came on time with the tiles and other materials in an afternoon. They removed the debris and cleaned up the counter-top. The next morning, the crews came back to finish the work. After the installation, they cleaned up the counter-top. Later afternoon on the same day, the owner Olive came to the house with another crew to add a piece of cabinet.
