Bauhaus came and did original estimate soon after I first called. Were extremely helpful and creative in providing ideas and suggestions. I thought the decorating ideas were tasteful and appropriate for the room. Once the work began it was mostly completed in one month for the price agreed to, except for some added changes (like painting the dining room). The men who did the cabinet work, floor tiles, painting etc. were good craftsmen. They worked almost every day and worked hard. Follow through at the end of the job was excellent. Even came back to hang pictures, which was above and beyond what I expected.
Description of Work: Full kitchen makeover. New cabinets, appliances countertop, backsplash, floor. No expansion or moving of walls. Painting of kitchen and adjacent dining room as well as woodwork carpentry in the 2 rooms

The project went well. Oliver Beer's estimate and final price were the same. He was responsive to my communication and informed me in a timely fashion about the progress of the work. There were a few work?arounds that developed during the project but these were resolved satisfactorily. The work was completed within the timeline we discussed. All parts of the project listed in the estimate were completed to my satisfaction. The workmanship and quality of material were very good. At completion, the worksite was left in a neat state. This was a job well done. I would certainly have Bauhaus Construction bid on future projects.
Description of Work: The following were completed by Bauhaus Construction: Installation of white facial boards on an existing deck. Power washing of deck, scrubbed with green composite cleaner. Preparation for and construction of concrete slab for deck stair landing. Installation of two steps, landing, and two handrails on existing deck.

We invited this contractor to bid on our job because of this excellent ratings on Angie's List. However, things did not go as anticipated. We found the contractor to be well educated and we suspect he would do excellent work--but excellent work his way. We found him to be strident and opinionated, talkative but unable to listen well. In sum, based on our personalities and work styles, we thought it would be difficult for us to work collaboratively with him.
Description of Work: The contractor came to our house, reviewed the architect's drawings, walked through the areas to be renovated (move a bathroom, open a ceiling, create a walk-in closet, move several windows). He spent a reasonable amount of time considering electrical, plumbing work and talking about how he would approach the job.

We called Oliver Beer and he sent Patrick over the next day to assess our needs. Patrick was available to start the following day with no hassles. He put 3 coats over our walls and fixed a bunch of outstanding items. He started on Wednesday and finished by Friday afternoon. We will definitely use Bauhaus again for our next project.

We liked the design a lot and the prices seemed fair and good. I really like how the company we went with listened to us and incorporated the things that were important to us. Bauhaus steered us other ways such as saying he thought we really needed a tile floor. He had a really nice design and had a computerized picture of it. He was going to do an unusual door between the hallway and the kitchen. He was very flexible about that but we just decided not to go with him. He got a little mad when we didn't go with him and accused us of stealing his design and going somewhere else. I thought that was a little bit unprofessional which is too bad because we might have had him do our bathroom. The design we used was completely different. He had a little bit of stubbornness and paranoia. I would not choose him again. He is a very good artist and may be meticulous in his work but it was the personality part.

From start to finish, Oliver was great to work with. Knowing that I was doing the kitchen renovation to sell the house, he was extremely respectful of my budget throughout the process. Although the final cost was higher than the initial estimate, the largest part of the difference was due to my decision, very early in the project, to go with the Cambria countertops rather than a lower-cost alternative. I also appreciated his manner of staging the project, which involved not starting the demolition until all materials (except the countertops) for the new kitchen were on hand; this greatly reduced the "down time" during the course of the project. He provided excellent suggestions throughout regarding selections of materials. For example, when the vinyl tile I had selected proved to be much more expensive than I had anticipated, he suggested changing it to porcelain tile in the same color scheme. This meant that another layer of plywood had to be put down in order to provide a proper subfloor--which in turn meant that special thresholds had to be fabricated for the two interior doors--but he dealt with all of these challenges superbly. He is also great at explaining things as they come up. I had chosen a 4"x4" tile for the backsplash, but he pointed out that tiles of this size would only accentuate the irregularity of the walls. Instead, at his suggestion, we used mesh-mounted tumbled marble, approx. 1"x1", and the effect is much more elegant than my initial idea would have been. Oliver was also great at accommodating the kitchen features I wanted to keep. (There weren't many! The kitchen hadn't been updated except for appliances and painting in 60 years.) These were two pocket doors to the hallway and to the dining room, which were narrow enough so that both had to be removed during the course of the work, and one doorway had to be widened temporarily. I mentioned the old wiring as one of the challenges the job presented. Oliver had to replace several lines, for the stove, microwave/fan, and dishwasher, and even the lighting fixtures presented wiring challenges. In addition, an outlet for the central vacuum had to be accommodated in the baseboard of the new cabinets, and this involved a lot of work from below. The electrical work also provides an example of Oliver's high professional and ethical standards: In the course of working on the wiring, Oliver spotted a pre-existing problem, probably dating to bathroom renovations that had been done (by another contractor) last year. An electrical line had been improperly tapped into the circuit breaker box, and Oliver explained that this was not only not up to code, it was also dangerous. Once he identified it, though, he was not going to just leave it; he felt that it was his professional responsibility to fix it, too. This illustrates one of the things that I appreciated the most about Oliver: Throughout my project, he encountered all sorts of unexpected challenges, but he never, ever made them MY problems. That is, he never just shrugged them off, but always provided some solution. Of course, as might be expected, there was some additional cost to rectifying the problems, but the expense in labor and materials was remarkably modest. I mentioned above that Oliver is very good at explaining what is going on in the project. He is also very good at staying in touch. Throughout the time he was working on my house, he was also involved in at least one other project, but he was very good at letting me know (by phone and e-mail) what the work schedule was going to be at each stage. This was a refreshing change from my prior experience with the contractor on the bathroom projects, where I had felt abandoned for weeks on end. One minor quibble had to do with Oliver's initial estimate of the time necessary to complete the project. He had initially estimated the job as taking two weeks. I probably took that with a grain of salt in any case, but the overall time of less than two months was still impressive. It can be very stressful undergoing major home improvements (especially in a small house like mine), but the entire process with Bauhaus Construction was pleasant, even fun. Oliver and Kevin (and the other occasional workers on the project) were always friendly, cheerful, polite, and neat. Oliver and Kevin have a funny, mock-bickering style between them, but they share a meticulous dedication to high-quality work. I enthusiastically recommend Bauhaus Construction, without reservation. Hire them for your job; you won't regret it! I am attaching some pictures of the completed project and the "before" look.
Description of Work: This was a kitchen renovation for re-sale in a ranch house built in 1950. All old cabinets, appliances, flooring and lighting fixtures were removed. New cabinets, appliances, flooring, countertops, backsplash, replacement windows, exterior door, and lighting fixtures were installed. The kitchen layout did not change, nor did the general location of the appliances. In the course of the work, additional work from my punch list of necessary work was done by Oliver Beer and Kevin Lapointe. This included replacement windows in another room and in the garage, new storm doors for the breezeway, and repairing damage to the deck. (These cost of these improvements is not included in the total cost reported here.) The kitchen countertops (Cambria engineered quartz) were supplied and installed by CT Solid Surface. As you might expect in renovations in a 60-year-old house, there were several challenges that came up in the course of the work--e.g., old wiring that needed to be replaced, floors and walls that weren't level, non-standard-sized door openings--and Oliver met all of them with supreme professionalism and good humor. I comment more about this below.

We couldn't have been more pleased with the quality of work and with the expertise and experience that Oliver brought to this job. It wasn't an easy fix - repairing a structural issue in a way which didn't look like it had been repaired (we did not want to redo the whole bathroom!). Oliver was very knowledgeable and extremely capable - we are confident he can fix anything. He was extremely neat and very considerate of our space. He was also very responsive to any inquiries, returning calls in a timely manner. We had complete confidence in Oliver's employees who were very knowledgeable. Oliver was more than willing to deal with other issues which presented themselves elsewhere in the course of the job - i.e. plugged drains, etc. He had access to our house in our absence, and happily took it upon himself to let the dogs out when he felt it was necessary and/or call if there was a question about anything in the house. He used good judgment in all repairs, replacing parts when he thought it would be best. This was a refreshing change of pace from many of the people who have done work in our house; most do not treat your home in the way they would treat their own. We will definitely make use of Oliver's services in the future!
Description of Work: Steam shower was leaking into the garage; the reason wasn't clear. Oliver evaluated and identified the problem which was related to the base and bench of the shower not being properly done when they were originally installed. Oliver was the first person consulted (out of many) who said the whole shower or the whole bathroom wouldn't have to be demolished in order to repair the shower. He disassembled the shower (not easy given it is a steam shower with complete glass enclosure) and removed the base and bench of the shower, allowing us to see the garage below. Of course what he removed was all moldy and rotten from the water leaking. He then rebuilt the shower, installing a new shower base and rebuilding the bench. He was able to match the existing tiles so that it is impossible to see that the shower has been "patched" and repaired. In addition to the work in the master bathroom, Oliver inspected and repaired/replaced grout in the other showers in the house.

Oliver is a master craftsman with a skillset honed in his completed German apprenticeship and years of hands-on experience in the design and application of methods to complete a beautiful and livable home remodeling. He is giving of his knowledge of materials and best practices while employing an uncompromising work ethic committed to perfection. Oliver and his assistants were timely each workday, friendly and helpful at all times to our family. I would, without reservation, recommend Oliver for any home improvement project.
Description of Work: Oliver completed an "extreme makeover" of our kitchen and master bath. Two other bathrooms received new countertops, sinks, toilets and fixtures. Painting of kitchen and all bathrooms was completed after extensive wall surface preparation. The master bath was stripped to the studs, subfloor rebuilt with redirected plumbing to accomodate relocated bathtub, toilet, and shower. Tile was installed for flooring, tub deck and shower along with new countertops, sinks and mirrors. Kitchen makeover required removal of old tiles and subfloor and plumbing repairs. New quartz countertops, sinks, faucets, undermount cabinet lighting, tile floor and backsplash were installed by Oliver. Existing kitchen cabinets were revitalized via refinishing.

We talked to a lot of contractors and had multiple estimates written up. Bauhaus was not the cheapest, but several things were clear from the beginning: (1) Oliver is a perfectionist and would do the job right. (2) Skimping on materials was not an option for Oliver - we agreed with this completely. (3) Oliver was willing to work with us on the design and selection of fixtures, tiles etc. (4) Oliver is a professional - educated and experienced in his craft. He is not some guy who was a painter last month, a roofer the month before, and a drywall guy last year. Complex detailed work is his specialty. Oliver was very helpful during the design - he put up with us taking our time on design choices, making several visits to our house, and bringing samples, emailing suggestions and photos, etc. That alone was a huge deal for us since we were not exactly sure what we wanted and what was possible. Throughout the build phase, Oliver was punctual and a pleasure to have around. Besides being great conversation in the morning and becoming our German shepherds new best friend, Oliver went out of his way to work with our schedules and have his crew clean up at the end of the day. The final product is top notch - a work of art. We wanted this bathroom to be perfect and it is. It will clearly add value to our home, and we will enjoy it immensely along the way. Even now that the job is done, Oliver has checked in several times to make sure we are happy and offered to tweak and tune anything in need.
Description of Work: My wife and I engaged Oliver to redo our second floor bathroom. It was a complete "do over" - everything was removed down to the studs - including the floor and ceiling. It is a small bathroom and we wanted to update it (was previously cheap 80's stuff) and get the most we could out of the space. This included a new custom shower (tile and glass), raising a soffet, removing a partial wall, leveling the floor, moving plumbing in the walls, new cabinets, granite counter and accents, tile for the floor and shower, fixtures, new doors, new electric (including new pulls from the basement), trim, paint - basically everything.

The house was built in 1934, and the prior owner, well, had done his own type of remodelling on top of the ancient electrical and plumbing. Needless to say, the electrical looked like spider webs, and Oliver and Mike (his assistant) had alot of organizing and figuring out which wire went to what. For example, the garage was on the living room and foyer/bathroom circuit. It only took a few days to remove the existing floor (and the additional flooring found under the first). They then moved the plumbing and put in updated piping for hot and cold water, with new electrical wires with their own circuits. I ordered new lighting, picked out tiles, and even when I said "no" to the tile pattern he placed, Oliver redid the pattern with no objections. The end result is I have a beautiful mudroom and a gorgeous bathroom, exactly as I wanted! I am working on the kitchen, with Oliver, of course.
Description of Work: Bathroom and pantry gutted, moved existing bathroom to pantry, made current bathroom into mudroom/foyer. Consisted of removing and replacing electrical, plumbing, floors (and terra cotta tiling to new floor).

We called Bauhaus Construction for an estimate to improve the insulation in the room over our garage which is unusable in the winter and summer. Oliver returned our call promptly and came the next day to provide an estimate. He immediately told us that from his experience, insulation was not the problem and that the room needed improved circulation since it is furthest from the air handling unit/compressor. He immediately provided an estimate of $1800 and emailed a quote of $1684 a couple of days later along with an estimated timeframe for when he could complete the job. To complete the job he arrived with an assistant and they found they did not have the easy access expected via the attic so they had to create extra access via the ceiling which resulted in unexpected drywall patching. They handled the electric (which is not mundane in this house!), framing of the fan, and drywall. Everything was completed and cleaned in one afternoon and his solution for our previously unusable room seems to be working perfectly.
Description of Work: Bauhaus Construction installed an attic fan in a room over our garage that was very hot and humid in the summer and cold in the winter. Installed in the ceiling with a timer switch nearby.

Oliver was quick to respond to our request for an estimate and ensured he knew exactly what we wanted before writing up the estimate. He started the job on time, came to work every day, and kept a very clean job site. He is very social and was easy to get along with and we completely trusted him in our home. Oliver is very energized by and committed to his work, and it shows in the results. He really cares about the happiness of his customers and is willing to go the extra mile to make sure everyone is satisfied.
Description of Work: Oliver completely renovated our 1970’s guest bathroom, created a pass through in a load-bearing wall between our kitchen and family room and added decorative molding and a shelf, added ceiling fans with overhead lighting to four bedrooms, removed a second floor deck, replaced and painted siding, power-washed the house, fixed a pocket door, and fixed several small electrical issues around the house.

Description of Work: Bauhaus Construction (Oliver and Tracey) finished a challenging and sensitive restoration of three bathrooms in our 1930 home. They offered excellent aesthetic and cost saving solutions---important to us in this project---and were especially good at really understanding our own varied and sometimes changing ideas. Their work ethic is excellent and Oliver s ability to solve all kinds of unexpected problems in this older house was really appreciated. Overall, the job went well and we were generally pleased. Oliver arrived early in the morning and worked hard all day until evening. My only concern in the end was the lack of attention to detail:the finishing touches I expected to be there in the end so that the job would look "polished and seamless" were absent. We had to take care of those details ourselves and it was very time consuming. Maybe we got what we paid for.

Mounting a 90 lb. TV is not as easy as one might think. You don't just throw some screws into the wall! Oliver advised me of what kind of mount which was needed and provided me with a vendor to purchase it from. Unfortunately, the vendor sent the wrong mount. In the meantime, Oliver performed all the prep work necessary to install this wall mount so when the correct one arrived, we were ready to go. 2"x6" studs were installed into the wall and electrical work was done. Next, the wall was patched, sanded and painted. We were then ready to mount the bracket and then the BIG TV! Mounting the TV was easier than expected (with the help of his expert assistant, Tracey), and next came the removal of the stand. That's where we ran into a little problem...but not to worry...Oliver handled it expertly and professionally. The stand had no instructions for removal of that particular model TV, and while Tracey checked online for some instructions, Oliver called LG (the manufacturer) and was told by them that even THEY didn't know how to remove it! After much perseverance, Oliver was able to successfully remove the stand. Oliver and Tracy work very professionally and with a great sense of humor as well. They even stayed to make sure the TV was up and running with my new satellite receiver with DVR! I might add, that while Oliver was diligently removing the TV stand, Tracey help me move my piano across the room...I'm very happy with my new living room!
Description of Work: I purchased a 52" flat screen tv to be mounted above the fireplace mantle. A hole was cut into the drywall, 2"x6" studs were installed and all electrical and finish work was performed by Bauhaus Construction.

We had a basement ceiling collapse after a dog sitter flooded the bathroom on the first floor. We were distraught over this and Oliver was very responsive in coming right over to look at it. He made great suggestions to improve both appearance and lighting in the room and his suggestions were very reasonably priced. His work is top quality, the price is right and he is reliable and trustworthy. We did not hesitate having him work in our home when we are not here (our dog loves him too and we know she is in good hands when he is here). We think Oliver is great and we will continue to have him back whenever we have work to be done.
Description of Work: Oliver has done several jobs for us. The most recent was to replace the ceiling in our basement and he also installed a more attractive handrail on the stairs.

I believe I called Oliver Beer of Bauhaus Construction on a Tuesday. He said he would stop by to take a look on Wednesday and give me an estimate. I received the estimate via email Wednesday evening and by Friday, my entire bathroom had been gutted right down to the studs with the help of his hard working partner, Tracey. Both Oliver and Tracey were very professional and insightful, almost like they knew exactly what I wanted. We did have a short wait time on the Kohler whirlpool, due to the fact that Kohler sent the wrong tub, but small setback to say the least. Oliver and Tracey showed up every day, prepared to put in a hard days work. They were a pleasure to have working for me. Work infused with a good sense of humor is essential during a renovation. I've never done a renovation before, and I've heard the nightmares, but Oliver and Tracey worked smoothly and professionally. They were very easy to get along with and it was like having a good friend working for me.
Description of Work: Let me preface this by saying Bauhaus Construction called me immediately. Two of the other contractors in called on Angie's List STILL haven't called me back! The entire bathroom was gutted right down to studs. Oliver and Tracey do all the work, from plumbing to electrical, to tile work, to sheetrock, to painting. A new Kohler whirlpool tub, pedestal sink, toilet were installed and are absolutely gorgeous. A recessed cabinet was also installed so I can now use my linen closet as a linen closet. Also, a medicine chest with a tri-fold door/mirrors affords the ability to see the back, side...every angle. The tile work is perfection as well. I went from having a '70's bathroom to a gorgeous new showplace.

The overall job went very well. The old floor had rotted, and the tile was in decline. It was time to redo the whole bathroom. Oliver, the Bauhaus owner impressed me with his desire to perform quality work, so I hired him. He was great in advising me about the various choice of products and encouraged me well not to compromise with the quality. I decided to do some demolition and he also advised me with that. He was someone who handled the unexpected very well. The previous owners had done questionable work quality, and Oliver was able to respond well to the unexpected challenges. For example, the old wood had rotted at one end of the old shower. He was able to replace the 2x4, and also redid the plumbing. He really did good work. His wife handled the tiling and painting well, even including a good surprise tiling trim.
Description of Work: Advised me on bathroom design choices, ie. tub type, toilet, lights, bathroom fan, vanity, tiles, plumbing and demolition. Performed some of the demolition (I did some too), and rebuilt the entire bathroom. He rebuilt the plumbing, and redid all the walls. Installed new toilet, vanity, and replaced the heavy old cast iron tub. Did the tiling and painting.

This is the third project we have done with Bauhaus Construction. Needless to say, we are very pleased with their work. Oliver Beer is meticulous in his work. He is extremely detailed and proud of his expertise. He and Tracey make a great team. They came to our house and gave us many suggestions, and then a detailed estimate. Along with the estimate was a sketch of what the new kitchen would look like, and this sketch was extremely helpful, as we changed many details as a result of it. We ordered new everything, and the actual work did not begin until all the cabinets and the appliances were in our garage. This led to a VERY SMOOTH operation. Oliver said it would take 4-5 weeks, and it took 1 day less than 5 weeks. One of those weeks however, was waiting for the countertops to be made, once the cabinets had been built. A number of things had to be changed and modified along the way. This is where Oliver and Tracey's strengths really shine. We discovered that our house was not level, the floor, and ceiling sloped. No problem for Oliver, he adapted and one would never know. Also, we ordered a large built-in double oven. This is fit into an entire floor to ceiling cabinet (we selected light maple cabinets and they are stunning). Well, the top of the stove turned out to be curved, so Oliver had to shave off a bit of the top bevel on the cabinet, again, no problem. As far as the countertops, we chose Quartz. Beautiful, high-end material, and they came out gorgeous, along with our under-mount sink. Lighting was another issue which was nicely addressed. Some of our old lighting was removed, and new lighting was installed to match some canister lights which we already had in place. Oliver specifically matched the outside trim so they would all be the same. And, after my whining about the light not being bright enough, he substituted several different bulbs so I could select the one which was the best. Now, let's get to Tracey. She has a unique eye for color and design. She knows when to suggest something different, or when to agree with a customer choice. The final product is always beautiful. One of the coolest things in the project was the fact that I wanted the wallpaper removed from the kitchen and dining room. We selected a paint choice, and you would never know there was ever wallpaper on the walls. Furthermore, they scraped my ugly popcorn ceiling and I now have a beautiful flat ceiling, as well as tiled window sills, for my plants. I cannot recommend them highly enough, and hope they will be available when I do my next project. In 2006, they completely remodeled my bathroom, and installed new windows and door, those reports have already been filed. Note the PRICE rating below it is B only because it was not cheap, but it was FAIR, in that we ordered high-end materials.
Description of Work: We had our kitchen completely remodeled with new cabinets, new island, new countertops, new sink, new backsplash, new lighting, new appliances. Only the refrigerator and tile floor remained from the old kitchen.
