I contacted three companies on Angie's list and had two look at the problem of the leak into my husband's office. Bauhaus Construction's Oliver Beer seemed the more knowledgeable and professional and came back with a quote that was acceptable to my husband and me. We paid him for the work on Wednesday evening and the job was finished Thursday afternoon. Mr. Beer was very easy to work with and the young man he sent over was pleasant and meticulous in his work. I will definitely call on Bauhaus Construction whenever I have the funds for more home improvement projects.
Description of Work: Checked roof over dormer to locate cause of water leakage into upstairs office. Removed two layers of old shingles checked plywood, placed tar paper and ice guard over existing plywood, placed new shingles over dormer, and cleaned up after job.

By far the best home improvement company I have ever used. The owner , Oliver, came by to give us his estimate. He was on time and extremely professional, he explained his training and experience and provided us with references. The next step was he sent in Patrick who was his drywall expert. Patrick explained exactly what he was going to do in my family room, how long it would take and when he wanted to start. First off he was punctual and his work was outstanding. Also he took an extreme amount of pride in his work and even after sanding the repair he left my house spotless. His work was so good I asked him to skim coat my kitchen ceiling. I have a considerable amount of wwork to be done in my home and this is the first company that I will call.
Description of Work: Repair and re-tape my family room ceiling and skim coat my kitchen ceiling giving it a perfectly smooth finish.

We worked with Oliver for several months before deciding on the final project. It began the beginning of July and we were promised everything would be complete by the end of August, which was very important. Thankfully we discovered the basement had a major water problem in June before renovations began. Oliver found a good contractor who specialized in waterproofing basements. It was not inexpensive but we wanted to protect our investment if we were to go forward with the project. The project finally began with the basement and flowed along but not always as quickly as we would have liked. The basement was completed at the end of August and the bathroom renovation began the beginning of September. We did add a bit of extra work while Oliver was in the house. He widened a narrow doorway to another room, installed new wood baseboard in our dining room, fixed vinyl flooring and vinyl baseboard trim where we had relocated a baseboard heating unit. All of the subcontractors that came to work at the house were all pleasant and professional and did good work. Oliver's two assistants do very good work and pay attention to detail and final product. Oliver went above and beyond what we asked him to do. We had hired another contracted to install a ventilation system which required making a vent through the cement basement wall. The installer did his job but did not make complete his final work to look nice. This bothered Oliver that the installer could leave a job like this and took it upon himself to seal the outside wall and finish the inside so that the baseboard woodwork was cut custom to fit around the ventilation unit and he put in special covers to guide the once dangling plug-in wire to look neat against the unit. I was very pleased that the under stair closet was finished with paint and vinyl flooring and baseboard woodwork, the large closet was finished nicely complete with lighting. Oliver and his assistants installed the shelving for our new large storage room. Over the weekend we had to make adjustments which meant unscrewing and repositioning bars. Oliver saw the holes, patched and repainted them which we did not ask him to do but he takes pride in his work. Another day, Oliver was waiting on the building inspector in order to go forward with the project. Instead of sitting around he got out his pressure washer and proceeded to power wash our whole house, the deck and the two picnic tables and the deck furniture! What a treat and so unexpected! That impressed me. All the attention to detail impressed us and convinced us what a good honest person Oliver was to work with. He really takes pride in his work and likes to leave the job knowing he made you happy and satisfied with his work. The job was finally complete in the middle of October, which was difficult and the major drawback but I have to say that we are very happy with the craftsmanship and quality of the work Oliver and his crew did here. I could write a lot more detail because Oliver was here a long time but I will end it here on a good note.
Description of Work: The basement was completely finished to include 4 new rooms: large laundry room with under stair closet, storage room, den and recreation rooms with a large closet to store out of season clothing .

This bathroom was completely gutted. Oliver took the pains and effort to try and keep the mess confined to the construction area since the room is located in the center of the house on the main floor. He laid down paper to protect the floors and put up a plastic 'tent' to keep the dust from getting to the other rooms. This bathroom was being done for my elderly mother in law and needed handicap accessible features. Oliver found products like the hand bars and shower fixture that fit the bill and were also attractive. Because the space in the bathroom was limited, we couldn't install a shower door but installed a shower rod and curtain. Oliver's subcontractors and assistants all were pleasant, professional and did good work that we are happy with. This job was part of a larger renovation job that included a finished basement. Please read further comments on that job.

I took Patrick 5 days to do the job. He and his crew were very professional and did an amazing job. It was a very messy job with all the scraping and what not, so even with all the plastic put up to keep the dust down we did have some dust clean up to do after Patrick cleaned up. It just was so fine it spread everywhere. But, anything that we asked them to do with the job they took care of it. I would definitely recommend and use these guys again.
Description of Work: I had a leak from the upstairs bathroom and after fixing the plumbing I had to replace the sheet rock in the den downstairs. I replaced the sheet rock myself but the spackeling and painting required a professional. I phoned three contractors on Angie's list and Oliver was the only one who got back to me. Oliver's sheetrock guy Patrick came over and did the estimate. I got one estimate for keeping the popcorn and one to scrape off the popcorn and do a smooth ceiling. I sent the quotes to my insurance company and they wanted to do the more expensive option of removing the popcorn.

We needed to have repairs to a wall and installation of an in-wall air conditioner and new window following mold abatement in the same area of our home office. We noticed many positive reviews on Angie's List and selected Bauhaus Construction for an estimate. Oliver gave us a very reasonable estimate leaving us the option of purchasing the air conditioner and window ourselves. Wayne and Oliver arrived the day after the mold abatement as anticipated. They were very professional and worked well together. The window we purchased was a little small for the window space. Oliver did a very skilled job fitting the window to the space and making a new window sill. Wayne also did a flawless job repairing the dry wall. We are very satisfied with the results of their work. We will call them again for other work we are planning for our house.

I have dealt with a number of contractors over the years and Oliver is by far the most Honest and thoughtful have EVER dealt with. My wife and I had an offer accepted on a new home for ourselves and two small children. After the inspection, there were a number of small issues that needed to be rectified. Some of the issues had to do with small toilet leaks so we decided to have a contractor come in to quote 2 new bathrooms, fix the ceiling in the sunroom and a few other odds and ends. I contacted 4 contractors and Oliver was the first to respond and also the first to have time to come out. Fortunately the homeowners were willing to allow a contractor in to quote the job, so we had Oliver meet us there one morning. We figured we would have him give us a quote and then compare it with the others. As soon as Oliver got there he was super nice, professional, and understanding of what we wanted to do. He made recommendations for things he thought we should do, but he also told us to wait on other things because of costs. Now understand, we didn't tell him a budget, so he could have told us that we needed much more done than actually did. Instead Oliver gave us sensible things that he could do to make the home nice, but not destroy our bank account. All in all, he gave us a rough number, but he told us he needed to research the photos he took, look up some prices and get back to us. The next night, Oliver called us with news we were not expecting, he told us that the small fix to the sunroom supports the inspector told us to do, would not be reasonable. He hold us we needed extensive work on the sunroom and we would need to get a number of other professionals in to see how it could be fixed. He told us he would talk to me in the morning. After a terrable night of going back and fourth on if we should even purchase the house, we decited to call Oliver and ask him his thoughts. Long story short, Oliver told us his 100% honest opinion on what would be needed, the costs, and the value of the home once we did everything. I asked him straight out, Should we purchase the home? He told us to "run as fast as we can" Now to all the readers of this review, Oliver had us, if he wanted to make a boatload of cash, he could have told us that he could do it and not to worry, and then completely leaked us out of all of our cash. Instead, he decided to have a conscience and tell us the truth. He did this, knowing that he would not get this job, and potentially lose us as clients if we purchase an updated home. Oliver is a great person, and i say this never having met him before this incident. I personally believe in character and honesty and Oliver has both in spades. Not only will i be using Oliver for all of my home improvement needs in the future, I will recommend him to everyone of my Family, Friends, and business associates. Oliver personally saved my family and i at least 100k and years worth of headaches and potential personal injury. For this, i will be forever in his debt. Anyone who needs home improvements, do yourself a favor and call Oliver at Bauhaus Construction.

There were a number of repairs listed above; and they all took some time to complete; but overall, I am completely satisfied with the quality and professionalism exhibited by Oliver Beer and his team. Overall: Excellent service. Outstanding quality. Professional and personable service.
Description of Work: Oliver Beer, the owner, along with his crew, performed the following services: Installed new handrails for stairs going down to the basement and upstairsInstalled new shower head and hand showerInstalled new garage doors, repaired all wood rot, and replaced all damaged wood trim around dormersPainted all exposed surfaces He used nothing but the best materials and supervised every aspect of the work. His workmanship and attention to detail was outstanding. He is a perfectionist and has a high regard for his work - something you do not find today with most craftsmen. Oliver and his team also performed many other additional services and provided excellent background information and suggestions regarding repairs and why the work had to be performed in such a way. All team members were courteous and professional. I highly recommend Oliver and his team.

We contacted Oliver based on recommendations on Angie's List to repair water damage in our upstairs hallway and main level office. He was prompt with his response, came out to look at the job, and gave us a rough cost estimate. He said if we were interested, he would send a detailed estimate. Within a couple days, we received the estimate. We liked Oliver's straight forward, no-nonsense approach and told him we would like to go ahead with the project. Fortunately, he was able to start the following Monday. The job took eleven days from start to finish. The end result is fabulous. All workmanship including drywall, painting, and carpentry was excellent. In particular, the floors turned out absolutely spectacular. It is nearly impossible to see the floor patch. If fact, the floor sanding looked so good we decided to leave it natural and just apply the protective finish. The workers were neat, quick, and efficient, as well as easy to communicate with. They also did a great job of quickly addressing unforeseen problems in an efficient manner, without adding to the original estimate. Overall we were very pleased with our experience with Bauhaus construction and would use them again.
Description of Work: Replace water damaged hardwood floorboards and refinish rest of contiguous floor including 3 bedrooms, closets, and stairs. Replace water damgaed ceiling including removal and reinstallation of crown molding. Painting of all walls and trim affected by repairs.

Oliver responded quickly to my phone call asking for an estimate, he came and explained to us what he is going to do. Oliver was going to build the shower without removing the floor tile (another company suggested to remove the whole floor tile!), he took a picture of it and he found a perfectly matching tile for the shower! he emailed me pictures of the shower accessories (sprayer head, hand shower, hook, grab bars, seat, vanity with faucet and medicine cabinet,...). We didn't have to go to the stores and choose from the thousands of options, which was convenient for us! Oliver understood what we need and he made good choices of the bath's materials. He has a good taste and he thinks of every detail (even things that we forgot to think of!). He likes everything to be done perfectly. He had to do some extra work that wasn't mentioned in the estimate and he didn't charge us any extra (I am sure that another company would have added extra charges!). Besides, his estimate was less than other companies! The job was done on time, the workers were nice an polite, they removed all the debris after they finished, they did a very good job and the bath looked nicer than what we expected! We are happy that we used this company!

. Bauhaus Construction had a very professional work ethic and high standards for job quality. They arrived on time, keep the site very clean, had pride in their work and did a very good restoration job after removing much rotted wood along a basement silplate. I would use this company again.
Description of Work: Bauhaus Construction replaced and restored cedar siding, plywood sheeting, and silplates near a clothes dryer vent that had rotted out. All damaged wood was cut out and replaced over an nearly eight foot by three foot area . Work was done on time and within the estimate. The company had a high regard that the work would be done to a high standard, which it was.

Our front door was a main concern for us and an urgent project to get done because it had many cracks and we lost much heat during the cold months. We have lived in this house for 7 years and have made repairments to this door twice, including painting. We contacted Bauhaus Construction last summer, initially to get some ideas for design and to get an estimate. Oliver visited us (the first of several times before the job was done) and talked to us for a couple of hours, helping us figure out what would be the best for us. His guidance turned out to be very valuable, since we wouldn't have been able to imagine a completely different door. We went from a 5 foot door to and 8 foot door, with lots of glass which lets tons of very much-needed light in. We also heard many stories from his life, who he was happy to share, and we were interested in hearing. Being from different parts of the world made it easy for us to connect with his experiences, and added a level of comfort in a nascent relationship. Once we had the design in place, we needed time to get the money together for this project. This worked out OK with Oliver, who also needed some time before he could get to our project. After talking for the first time in August, we were ready to get the project rolling in early February. Throughout this time, Oliver was good with communications on the phone and by e-mail. He answered all our concerns and always got back to us with answers to our questions. We would use Bauhaus Construction again for many reasons, but if we have to choose one, it would be this one: Attention to detail. Oliver is obsessed with perfection and had a keen eye to catch sloppiness in the installation work. The result was a beautiful door installed with much care and all the details were in place. After the door was installed, Oliver came two more times with his most trusted workers to finish the details and to make sure that we were happy with the final product. In the many opportunities we had for interactions with Oliver, we got to know him well as a person. He says what he thinks and he's straightforward in expressing his thoughts, a personality trait that talks of his passion for well-done and fair work. He's also an open-minded person and sensitive to multicultural understandings, with whom we felt immediately at ease. We feel that through our door project, we made a valuable business and personal relationship with Bauhaus Construction.

I first spoke with Oliver around the 7th of October. He had me email him with pictures of the water damage to my ceiling and sliding glass door. He promptly responded that day and explained what kind of work it looked like they would need to do to fix the problem. He sent an email to me on the 15th explaining that they had been very busy over the past few weeks and could have someone come and look at the damage in person if I gave him my times that would fit my schedule. I sent him my schedule and he responded on the 18th saying that someone named Wayne would get in contact with me to set up a time to come give me an estimate. That is the last I heard from Bauhaus Construction. The only thing I can rate really them on is the "responsiveness" factor. I completely understand that we have had some very unusual weather, which has caused companies like Bauhaus to be overwhelmed with work. It just would have been nice to hear back from someone. It is now January, so I think that I have given them enough time to recover enough from the ice storm to at least let me know that they are too busy to give an estimate or take on any work. I have nothing bad to say about Bauhaus other than it seems like my estimate request got lost during the hectic time after the storms. I eventually gave up and got an estimate from someone else because my insurance company needed the information. To be fair, I probably could have done more on my end to try to get in contact with Bauhaus after I stopped hearing from them, but I didn't have the time because of the insurance issue.

The member was contacted and told that Wayne would reach out to her regarding her inquiry. Wayne then called the member in early November and left a message and his call was never returned. The end of October was a very busy time for many contractors, including us, epically in light of the storm that affected the entire state. We did our best to respond to all inquiries that we received during this time, but when our calls were not returned; we assumed that the member had found another contractor to provide her with assistance, as many calls were of an urgent nature.

Oliver of Bauhaus Construction exceeded our expectations from start to finish of the renovation of our colonial home in Farmington. After interviewing several contractors, who's quotes were borderline ridiculous, I met with Oliver, owner of Bauhaus. After an estimate that resulted in a 3 hour "meeting of the minds" and a carafe of coffee, I knew I had found my contractor! Oliver brings his vast knowledge of his trade and old world European background and is able to seemlessly connect it with modern architecture and the wishes of his customer. He keeps up to date with new technology and even recommended a chandelier lift to us that drops the chandelier down for cleaning and light bulb changing (love it!). Oliver has assembled a team of craftsmen that expertly performed their work in our home and treated it as respectfully as if it were their own. They were prompt, professional, considerate, and knowledgeable. I was impressed with every member of the Bauhaus team. Our home has been transformed thanks to Bauhaus Construction and I couldn't be happier with the result. When we asked that our home be ready for Christmas, Oliver obliged and had people in our home working every day of the week to honor my request. I would recommend them without reservation to others and plan on doing work again with them in the future. To speak to some of the negative comments posted, it is true that Oliver has a thick German accent and can seem verbose at times, I felt comfortable with him from the start and have never felt otherwise. The work was done professional, on time, within budget, and with excellent responsiveness to requests and questions. It was a pleasure to work with him, and, although I don't miss the dust of a renovation, I must say I miss the daily interaction with him and his crew....they are were all gentlemen and I can't say enough nice things about them!

Oliver showed immediate concern for my problem. Told me to turn off the offending breaker and he would be over as soon as he could. He was there in a couple hours, fixed my problem and gave me an assessment of my system and what needed to be done in the future. He was professional, extremely knowledgeable and likeable on every level. He gave me a quote on what further work would cost. Many other contractors would charge an arm and a leg for an after hours service call but Oliver did not. I cannot recommend him highly enough. He will be my first call for any future work.

I was very pleased overall. Oliver got the job done quickly and efficiently, and the new floors look excellent. Oliver was consistently responsive to phone calls and emails, and even made sure to follow up on how the job came out.
Description of Work: Needed the full second floor of our new house refinished quickly before moving in. I spoke to Oliver at Bauhaus on Sunday, he took charge and said he would have the job done by Friday in time for us to move in on Saturday. The floors were sanded, repaired / puttied and urethaned for a beautiful overall finish, and completed as promised on time on Friday.

I found them through Angie's List. I thought that they were excellent. Their responsiveness was excellent. I would definitely use them again in the future.
Description of Work: I used the services of Bauhaus Construction in the middle of October 2011. We removed a wall in our living room and kitchen. They repaired the flooring underneath that.

Overall i'm very pleased with the company. Their finished product is great. Wayne who repaired my DIY ceiling made it look brand new. Keith who came out and did the molding/trim did a great job, and did a superb job on my interior door. I had attempted to do it myself and made it much harder on him, but the finished door looks great. My only complaint with the company are with communication. There was a mix up where they were supposed to start one day, but there was a communication mix-up, and really they couldn't start till early the next week. It was a bit of an inconvenience since I took the day off from work, but they made up for that by being punctual on all subsequent days scheduled, and going above and beyond what I had expected them to do. I also appreciated the followup call the night the job was finished to make sure everything was to my liking. I also REALLY appreciated the offer to come back out and after we painted to fix anything that might not be perfect. Customer service like that is hard to come by. If you need drywall work done, ask for Wayne to do it. He's great! Overall i'm very happy with the results, my bedroom looks great. Despite a couple of communication hiccups, I would/will use them again.

Some tradesmen are good. Some are really good. And some are artists! Bauhaus gives you the artist, who, beyond exceptional installation and workmanship, also selected the perfect tiles, fixtures, colors, etc. I was amazed at the quality of work, especially for the price which was much lower than expected. When he hit a small snag (reinstalling the shower door), he called a professional installer and reimbursed us for the price, even though we offered to pay the extra. We recommend Bauhaus without reservation. We want to add several hundred bathrooms to our house just to get to use them again.

He was very punctual with a return phone call. I was able to go in with just a general idea of what I wanted and he helped walk me through options and recommendations. Picked the specific items and scheduled the work to be done. He was on time with all appointments. I am happy with the products and work done and plan on using him for future countertops and flooring. He paid special close attention to quality.

We tried to get an estimate for an insulation job for six weeks. After many vague emails postponing an estimate (during which time we held off hiring someone, trying to be respectful of Oliver's time) we were finally able to have Oliver come look at the job. While there he dismissed our questions, tore at existing insulation "to show us its uselessness" without permission, and diminished our concerns about cost. After promising an estimate he left. Later that evening we received an email telling us that the way we were interested in doing the job (with R30 insulation not R19) was poor. He ended by stating that, "i suggest to talk to other contractors and see what they have to say and if you still like to get out opinion again feel free to contact us otherwise we wish you the best of luck to get your project before the winter accomplished." In other words, after all of this he was not going to be providing us an estimate! We responded with a short email that we were disappointed not to receive an estimate for the job. We quickly received a rude voicemail telling us he didn't appreciate our email, that we were disrespectful to him, that he didn't have time to write an estimate yet and we should be more patient, and that our request that he not tear up my insulation was shocking and rude. When we decided to take the high road and not respond he sent a rude and unprofessional email saying things like, "you're not my kind of client." Everything he proposed was counter to recommendations and estimates from five different (highly rated on Angie's List) companies in the area. Plus, none of them sent us insulting voicemail or email. Having done a lot of work on our old house, we have never been treated so poorly by a contractor.

Response from Bauhaus Construction
Dear Customer When my carpenter and I came out to your home on the first of September around 11:30am to look at your project, you took us in the attic to evaluate the existing insulation. What we found was a space of around 1375 square foot which was covered about 40% of 1x5x3/4”x8’ wooden planks. The insulation was in a poor condition considering the age of the house. The home owner told us to use R30 because she is getting tax credit from the government. We explained to the client in order to install R30 the wood need to be removed because the rafters where only 5 ¾” and theR30 insulation is 10” as well all the exposed wires which were going across the attic and would be left hanging over the new installed insulation. Because of the thickness of the insulation some wires might need it to be extended with junction boxes. We suggested leaving the wood of to get a better insulation rating. The client stated they need the room for storage. Out of technical reasons you can’t install R30 in a space that’s barely 6” there is too much pressure between the wood and the ceiling below. So I said if you like the storage it’s recommended to use R19 under the wooden planks but they still need it to be removed in order to guaranty a proper job. The client stated she does not want to spend allot of money on this project. So we told her we can remove the existing insulation and replace it with R30 except under the wood planks. So part of the evaluation included checking the existing insulation as I begun to fold a small section of insulation back to see the condition under, the client snapped at me got verbally loud in front of my coworker and told me not to rip out the insulation and put it back instantly .My coworker looked at me like please lets go. In my entire courier of 35 years no one ever talked to me this way we were shocked, and left the residence instantly. The same night I wrote an email stating the same like you read here in order to do the job right we should remove and reinstall new plywood instead them old floor boards, because this way you get an proper insulation. We did not come to argue with the client, just responded to a request for her project. I wrote an honest e-mail stating if she does not agree with me to get another opinion from a different contractor. Next morning I received an e-mail simply stating she was disappointed not to receive a written estimate. How could I write an estimate if there was no agreement on anything .As I was stating in my e-mail we won’t just do a job just to do it, we are 35 years in business for a reason. Was told by clients we were hired because we did not agree with certain opinions and stood by our word. We bin with angieslist for quite some time and worked hard to earn our place in the community. Lately we are getting reports from clients we did not even do a job because of disagreements (we were asked for our opinion). I’m asking the question, what reason we should have to go in to a client’s home and be disrespectful and rude it doesn’t make any sense. We enjoy our work and the results we are accomplish together with our clients input. The client’s voice is very important to create their dream renovation, because everyone works hard for their money and I have totally respected that. We wish Eve the best in finding a right contractor which is able to answer her question and help her to get the home properly insulated for the upcoming winter. Sincerely
