Was disappointed. We had used them last year without any issues. This year they had tracked a lot of soot on to our tile floors. As I was cleaning it up the technician ignored me and explained to my wife that we needed over 6000 dollars in repairs using scare tactics. We had another company do repairs for 150.00. Do not hire them they are now con artists. They should be investigated for unethical practices.

I would love to check into this for you and see what happened. However, I am having a very hard time finding this file by name alone. If you could please provide the address of the home, I would be better able to check into this for you. Your help regarding this matter is greatly appreciated.

While I would love to look into the file and find out why it was a different price than what the office quoted, I am not pulling the file up by the address or name. Did we perhaps go to a different address than is listed?

They cleaned the chimney and water proofed the cap. Joe showed me a video of what they did and the job looked good. I highly recommend this company. They were honest and told me what needed to be done in the future.
Description of Work: I was told I needed a new sleeve in my chimney because the sleeve I had in there was corrugated and was only used with a gas furnace Safeside came out and looked at the lining and said I did not need a new sleeve. I had prices from $1500 to $1800 for a new liner. However, the chimney needed a new water proof cap and cleaning.

Instead, they stated: 1. (Duffy) “ would not be comfortable trying to repair the fireplace.” 2. (Ball) “ recommended that the ”Smoke Chamber” be “parged” (sprayed with an insulating high temperature mortar). Offered to do the job for $1,400. (From the pictures he took of the smoke chamber it was clear that, in fact, the smoke chamber had already been “parged”. 3. (Napolitano) offered “to install a Bell Fire Retrofit System for $12,000.” I was upset that I had a beautiful fireplace that could not be used. However, what I was being told did not make sense. At the suggestion of a neighbor, I called my Town Fire Marshal. He offered to come with the Town building Inspector to review the fireplace two days later. In the Building Inspector’s and Fire Marshall’s view, the smoke chamber was already parged and the fireplace was safe to use without any further work.
Description of Work: DO NOT USE THIS CHIMNEY SWEEP WITHOUT FIRST CALLING YOUR BUILDING INSPECTOR OR FIRE MARSHALL!!! I arranged for a fireplace chimney inspection/cleaning with all three chimney sweeps that I found that operate in Fairfield County – • [*** Link removed ***] (Gavin Duffy) • [*** Link removed ***] James Ball and • [*** Link removed ***] (Kyle Napolitano). All three agreed I my fireplace did not need a chimney cleaning. However they did state in writing: 1. (Duffy) “We recommend that you do not use the fireplace”, 2. (Ball) ”In our professional opinion based on what we found, our training and applicable NFPA building code 211, that use shall be discontinued until . . . repairs are made”. 3. Napolitano) “It is recommended that the fireplace not be used”..

Response from Safeside Chimney & Duct Cleaning
We respectfully disagree. Three highly reputable companies, all of which have been in business for 20 plus years , and are active in ongoing training provided by our industry through the guild and chimney safety institute , all explained that the fireplace has a defect that put the fireplace safety in question. Looking at the pictures we took ; Far up into the smoke chamber , where the first flue tile is set , there is hollow block exposed that can allow hot flue gasses , embers , and creosote to leach behind the tiles into potentially unprotected areas of the chimney system. The code describing the way the smoke chamber should be built is : RIOOl.8 Smoke chamber. Smoke chamber walls shall be constructed of solid masonry units, hollow masonry units grouted solid, stone or concrete. Corbelling of masonry units shall not leave unit cores exposed to the inside of the smoke chamber. When a lining of firebrick at least 2 inches (51 mm) thick, or a lining of vitrified clay at least 5/g inch (16 mm) thick, is provided, the total minimum thickness of front, back and side walls shall be 6 inches (152 mm) of solid masonry, including the lining. Firebrick shall conform to ASTM C 27 or C 1261 and shall be laid with medium duty refractory mortar conforming to ASTM C 199. Where no lining is provided, the total minimum thickness of front, back and side walls shall be 8 inches (203 mm) of solid masonry. When the inside surface of the smoke chamber is formed by corbeled masonry, the inside surface shall be parged smooth. Solution - Fill the area with proper refractory masonry to the above specifications or bypass the area with a listed chimney liner.

On plus side, they were punctual and did a good job on chimney cleaning. On con side they tried to high pressure utilization of their repair and other services plus claimed that their was a dangerous condition. We had other contractors look and there were not major issues. Plus the cost to fix of the other contractors - one chimney had to have a liner put in - was 50% less that what was quoted by safeside.

The guys came on time and very helpful in answering any questions I have about using a wood stove chimney. Joe showed me what is the soot should be like to keep the chimney in good condition. He also took a look at another chimney in the basement to just to make sure it's in good condition and also the oil furnace exhaust. When the guys were done, they cleaned up the area well and asked if I had any other questions before they left. I purchased a discounted price for chimney sweep for $129 through Angie's List but since I have a wood stove there was an additional $20-30. FYI for those with a wood stove insert.

Sweeps can certainly be done from the bottom. However, with our technicians being certified by the Chimney Safety Institute of America, we do perform a Level 1 general visual inspection of the chimney while we are cleaning. If we see any areas of concern, we do take digital pictures to show the home owner what we are seeing and help them understand any recommendations they may make. We have experienced that our prices are generally comparable to other companies in our area; a little higher than some and a little lower than others.

I called Safeside for a chimney inspection. They inspected the chimney and took pictures of problem areas. (Inspection is $85, but is goes to any repairs.) They explain the nature of the problems and implications. Then I was informed about my options. They were able to fix the problems same day and I got a 10 year warranty.

Very well. From day that someone came to give an estimate through my scheduling the work and its eventual completion, the process went like clockwork. I asked for 48 hours notice before they arrived and got this so I could arrange being home to provide them access to water and electricity. The guys arrived as promised, focused on the work and the entire job (plus cleanup) was performed and completed in one day. The crew consisted of two guys. I asked for the used brick for my garden and this was include din the work order. Years past we used them for a chimney liner when converting from oil to gas - loved them then, love them now.

These guys were excellent. My water heater kept clicking off. My warranty company kept stating that there was a problem with the liner that they replaced and that there was back draft. Gentleman came out and actually showed me how to tell if it was in fact backdrafting. Turns out it was a known problem with the water heater and my Warranty company replaced the water heater. The company went above and beyond by researching know problems with my water heater make and model.

We have used Safeside now on three occasions. On the first two occasions, a chimney cleaning and repair of the crown area of our chimney, there were no issues. However, on our last appointment, there were a number of issues. We were given a "12 to 4" window for the cleaning, and I was asked to be sure that I was at my home by noon. I took time from work to be available for the appointment. At 1:30 p.m., I contacted the office and asked if there was an estimate as to when the technicians would be at my home. I was told it would be a half hour to forty five minutes. About fifteen minutes later, I received a call from the technicians themselves, indicating that it would be unlikely that they would be at my home by 4. After speaking with the technicians, I called the office to complain about the discrepancy, and was told I would have no choice but to reschedule but I would be given a $20 credit towards the service. I explained that I would have to call them back, as I needed to check my schedule and was not sure I wanted to have them perform the work, after they had missed my appointment. I left home and went to my office, only to be called by the company 5 minutes after I had arrived that they were on their way to my home. Because I had already scheduled my day around the appointment, I agreed to meet the technicians and have them perform the work. The technicians were very apologetic about the issues I had encountered. I was concerned, however, that they did rush through my job as they were trying to catch up with their schedule. After reviewing my invoice, it also appears that I did not receive the $20 credit that was promised, although in fairness that is certainly something I should have reviewed before they left. I did call the following Saturday and mentioned the credit, and was told someone would call me back, but I have not heard from anyone as of the date of this review. My rating is based largely on the fact that the prior jobs went without incident; however, after this past experience, it is unlikely that I would use them again. Updated as of 10/14/2016: I have received a check for the credit that was promised.

We were impressed by the technician but the experience preceding him coming was awful. The woman who scheduled the appointment gave the tech the wrong address and then told me I wasn't home when they came. I had taken time off to, stay home and wait for them. I was accused of lying, and then she told my husband that he informed them that I was not authorized to speak with the technicians. When she finally had the tech call us, he described the house he was sent to, which was not ours but one down the block. He was upset at the treatment we had received from the office person. We would, have considered them more if someone had called us to follow up or try to explain the mistake. All the other reviews were so positive but without any follow up, I could not choose them.

I was recently in an urgent situation where I sold my house and had a closing scheduled. The closing was contingent that I replace the chimney due to issues with the existing chimney. I had contracted with a local mason two months prior to do the work. That mason repeatedly assured me that the job will get done in time for the closing and week after week went by with excuse after excuse for not starting (i.e. weather, finishing other jobs, holidays). Eventually that slacker became a no show with only 1-2 weeks from closing. I had to ditch him and begin a desperate search to find another mason who could do the job on short notice. Otherwise the closing would be in jeopardy. Safeside Chimney was the first company I called and they sent a mason out there the next day to provide a quote. They were very understanding of my situation and I felt that they put my concerns as a priority, which put my mind at ease. I contracted with them to do the work and they got a mason, Chris, to start within a couple of days. Chris did a great job in keeping me informed of progress. You can tell he knows his stuff, takes pride in his work and does a great job. Long story short, Safeside Chimney saved the day for me and they were able to do a complete chimney removal and rebuild before the scheduled closing date. I want to personally thank Dale and Chris and his crew who worked on the chimney to get the job done on time and in the right manner. They are reliable, customer focused, they stand by their work and their prices are reasonable. If I only contacted them from the start I would have saved myself a lot of stress. Therefore, I highly recommend Safeside Chimney and would certainly call them again if I need any other chimney services in the future.

Due to age, our chimney was in bad shape and we were starting to find pieces of brick on the deck. We obtained estimates from three companies, including Safeside. We found them to be very professional both during the estimate and in follow up phone calls. We signed up with Safeside and they came out to do the work two weeks later. The three man crew were courteous and seemed to take pride in their work. They finished the job in a day and a half. It looked great when they finished and still does two months later. We are very satisfied.
