The job never took place.
Description of Work: I originally called and booked an appointment for 11/02/12. On 10/28, I called to let the company know that I had lost power and asked if it would be an issue. The woman on the phone turned around and asked the owner if it would be an issue, his response was no. Being a bit concerned how the job would be performed with no lights or electricity, I called the company again to reconfirm everything. This time I spoke to a Gentleman and explained to him that I was still without power. He has a bit surprised and he said the company could not guarantee the job would be 100% satisfactory. Meaning they needed power to run their vacuum(s) to ensure proper clean-up. I was a little upset as my wife had set up her schedule to be home. I explained to the Gentlemen that at this point in time that neither my wife or I had any free time during the week and a Saturday appointment would be more convenient. The gentlemen said he had 11/17 open and would schedule me for that Saturday. He also said to let him know if another time during the week popped up and they would see if they could fit me in. Today 11/16 I called to confirm my appointment for 11/17 and I was told they did not have me on the schedule and that they were already over booked. I explained everything to the person on the phone and then preceeded to ask why I should continue on with their company. I was offered a $20 discount off of what my $329 service was supposed to be. I told her I was not looking for a discount, but an answer to my question. She could not provide an answer. In the end I'm just dissapointed based upon alll of the positive feedback I had seen on Angie's list.

You have every right to be frustrated. Some of this is my fault. This is the Busiest time of the year and we had to reschedule over 100 jobs during the storm and even open up a Sunday (turning 6 day a week job to 13 straight). Throughout the week , we had packed schedules , most customers had power but some didn't. We are/were capable of performing some work to the satisfaction of customers , despite the power issue. Most cases a shovel and a bucket can do what the vacuum does. However , there were certain houses that the vacuum is more necessary in dust control. There were some homes that we opted to reschedule due to this. Our policy was very inconsistent about when we should or shouldn't rearrange and wasn't explained well to our techs because we skipped our weekly company meeting to deal with the overflow. Again , this is part my fault , because I too , changed course on this in certain occasions. We were booking 2 weeks out prior to this storm. Cancelling on a customer and telling them we'll be out in 2+ weeks wasn't an attractive option for either of us , most of the time. We did do pretty well , for the most part , dealing with this incredibly difficult week. But I must admit , you are not the only customer that didn't get the service you deserve. For that , I apologize and take total responsibility. Kevin Beary - Vice President

Description of Work: I hired this company to come clean my chimney. I asked them to call my cellphone 1/2 hour in advance so I could leave work and get to my home. They never called and showed up at my house with my 16 year old daughter home. She called to tell me they were there and in the house. I told her that I was calling the company to ask the contractors to leave until I arrived because she was uncomfortable. I called and asked them to contact their crew and ask them to wait outside until I got home. The operator stated that they would make the phone call right away. When I arrived home the crew was not there and my daughter said that they received the call but didn't leave and continued to work in the house. When I called the company to complain the VP Kevin stated that I was over reacting and that his crew would never do anything unprofessional. I told him that he was missing the point and that when I asked them to leave they should have left. He then became verbally aggressive with me.

Description of Work: From the year I moved to Connecticut in 2001 until this year (2011), I've always used Safeside to clean the chimneys of the fireplace and the furnace. Over this period, they inspected my chimney and replaced a cap - and then convinced me to replace the chimney itself down to the roof line. I no longer use my fireplace, so the annual service includes only cleaning the furnace flu. This year, they tried to sell me a whole new $1,600 chimney lining, saying that my new energy-saving furnace was causing cracks inside the chimney brickwork and that carbon monoxide might leak into the house. This company now seems to be about selling - through scare tactics - products not necessarily needed. After checking with several fire safety professionals as well as my furnace company, I decided to have my annual furnace maintenance include painting the chimney with fire retardant solution. For less than $50. The fire safety professionals, as well as my furnace company, said that Safeside didn't misrepresent the potantial danger of the new energy saving furnace emissions by-product - but they did exaggerate the danger 10,000%. Safeside is out to make a buck in these financially insecure times - no problem there, but NOT with scare tactics. Highly unprofessional - I do NOT recommend!

I am sorry that you were unhappy with this years service and my CSIA Certified serviceman's report , but more so that you felt his report was explained to you in a "scare-tactic" manner. The inspection of the chimney is not a subjective process. If there are deficiencies in the system , they are noted , pictures taken and reccomendations provided. If we did not note these issues and there was a problem , we would be legally liable. Presenting these issues to a homeowner is rarely a comfortable event. We are trained to deliver this information in a consistent manner , unfortunately , how one receives this information is not always consistent. Again , I apologize if you felt that Derick didn't present you the information in the way I've just described. As far as the advice you received from non-chimney professionals. I greatly disagree. I have looked at the pictures personally and there is no doubt that this chimney shall require a chimney liner at some point in its future. However , there is ZERO danger from fire , inert oil soot is non-flammable. A fire-safety specialist would know this. I am therefore unsure why it was recommended to "paint the chimney with a fire retardant solution", regardless of its low cost. I couldn't find any quick information on what this products ingredients could be , but any coating applied to masonry could cause moisture to be retained and cause interior damage to chimney to be accelerated. That is exactly the situation we noted being caused by the excess moisture and lower stack temperatures typical with higher efficiency units. Typically a furnace man , especially one that installed the unit , will not mention these issues unless draft is severely compromised. I strongly recommend you have a CSIA Certified Chimney Professional inspect your chimney as a second opinion instead of professionals from other industries. I wish you well. Sincerely , Kevin Beary Vice President
