On the day they were scheduled to work, they were prompt, knowledgeable, and professional. They cleaned the fireplace flue and the furnace flue, plus they repaired the chimney in the basement where an old water heater used to be vented. They were very patient with us and all of our questions. We are very happy with their service. We will definitely use them again.
Description of Work: We purchased an older home and wanted to make sure the chimney was in working order before we used the fireplace.

I originally contacted them for a cleaning. They showed up promply and did the cleaning. They informed me that my chimney didn't have a liner. They showed me pictures of inside, and I could see some pitting in the brick. So the liner will protect the chimney from CO2 entering the house. If I wanted the liner, then they would wave the cleaning price. So I asked to set up a Saturday appointment, and they were able to accommodate that. They showed up on time, and got right to work. The job took only about an hour. They were very professional. I recommend them.

Safeside was extremely courteous and punctual. I had initially requested both the fireplace flue and the oil furnace flue to be cleaned. With pleasantly surprising honesty, they advised that I only needed my oil flue cleaned, which cut the cost of the service in half. They were accomodating when I asked questions, showed me pictures of the flue prior to cleaning, and were extremely neat. I'd recommend these folks to anyone!

Safeside was very responsive in giving an estimate in terms of setting up appt, providing additional information (website) and arriving on time. Rep was very professional, spent time analyzing problem and providing an estimate and generally what work would be done. Was very impressed that the rep said that the chimney lining was ok - another company said we needed a new lining! Did not proceed with repair as more interested in doing repointing and not entire new chimney. Said new chimney was needed since chimney had tar flashing on sides to correct a prior leak. Also timing was a factor as we were looking to replace roof - had to postpone to Spring due to other obligations, so will try to coordinate both.

I called because of rainwater coming down into basement, thought it was because of inadequate cap. They changed cap, as I requested, but it didn't need replacing if the problem had been properly diagnosed. I feel they should have recognized the real problem. My impression was that the representative was more interested in selling me something than really finding out the problem. Problem was ultimately fixed by another company.

I have been debating on writing this review for months, but the serious repair I had to do this week shaped my decision. Last summer, as new homeowners, my husband and I hired Safeside to do a chimney and fireplace inspection. We knew we had some spalling and our house inspector was concerned about one of the flue tiles in the fireplace chimney. The inspection was in November, and two employees showed up punctually, despite the fact that the area had been without power for days due to the freak winter storm. The firebox was fine, and the chimney was fine, they said--it needed a moisture barrier to prevent spalling, but did not need a cleaning or other repair. I thought it odd that the inspection did not include the attic or basement, but was frankly too frazzled waiting for power reconnection to the house that I let it go. The employees were also a little funny, and that was more my concern as they left--one seemed stoned, and at one point laid on the roof and announced he "felt like a lizard." Fast forward a few months, and the chimney's ancient flashing has begun to peel away. I called Safeside for an estimate and requested they send different employees to the house, but tried to affirm that it was mostly my issue--the others, I said, weren't bad or anything, just a little funny. Safeside sent a well-versed guy to the house who climbed on the roof, and then even went into the attic to check for any water damage. He gave me a reasonable estimate and I was pleased and sent a deposit. A week later, I received a check from Safeside for the amount of the deposit with no explanation. I called and no one was able to clarify. I called again, seeking to speak to the owner, nothing. I eventually called a third time and the man who answered the phone explained that the estimate was dramatically under cost (I'd been quoted $650, should have been $1400) because they'd have to tear up roof, add flashing there, etc. I explained that I had a new roof and new flashing on that end, and the price only dropped to $1100. I called in a number of other companies then for estimates. One that came--and which we went with--told me, when he came off the roof, that it looked like the flue lining to our furnace was filthy and/or deteriorating, indicated by blackening of the outside of the chimney and which he saw peeking in. I asked if that would be something that only just happened, and he said no, it took years for it to get this bad and had likely been this bad a while. He seemed surprised the chimney inspection in November hadn't mentioned it. I dug out the appraisal photos of our house from spring '11, and sure enough, the chimney had blackened bricks then. I called in yet another company as a third party and they took photos so I could see the deterioration. They are up there right now, adding a new liner and taking down what turned out to be a barely-stable arm for the bluestone cap. This last experience is why I am writing. For the initial inspection to state the chimney was fine when in fact its liner was crumbling is both scary and problematic. I don't know if they only really looked at the fireplace side, since that was my immediate concern with the power out and a 45* house, but my understanding of a chimney inspection is that they look at both flues. Perhaps I needed to be more explicit. At any rate, I have nothing to gain by calling the office and telling them all of this, but I wanted others to be aware of the issues I had. I would not recommend them.

They gave me a 5 hour window, called with 10 minutes left on the window, said they would be 30 minutes late. 1 1/2 hours later they show up said it would take an hour--an hour and a half later I find them sitting in their truck smoking cigarettes, calling the home office for instructions for putting my chimney back together. They were filthy, tracked in soot on the carpets, left dirty hand prints on my walls and front door and they reeked of BO. NUFF SAID?Chimney

We needed extensive Chimney repair and called Safeside for an estimate. Salesguy was professional and polite and gave me an overall cost of repair. A few days later I contacted the office and let them know I would be interested in using the company but first would like to see a detailed invoice including all parts they were going to use so I could make sure these were good quality parts. Never heard back from them again. I must have left 3-4 messages and that was it. For whatever reason they didn't want the business or didn't want to tell me what parts they use.

I've lived in this house for over 17 years and never had the chimney cleaned - yes, procrastination is one of my strong suits. I asked around to see if anyone knew of a reputable chimney sweep and it seems as if I'm not alone in my procrastination - or they cleaned it themselves. I received a flyer in the mail with a coupon for Safeside and took a chance and called. I received an appointment in under a week with a time window of 2:00-4:00. On the day of the service I received a call at 11:30 stating that they could be there by noon if that would be okay with me. Heck ya, when does that ever happen? When they arrived, both gentleman were very personable and explained to me what they were going to do. I figured that I was going to get socked with a huge mess and a very disheartening report. So, I waited. Within minutes they were done with their inspection and and he was ready to explain to me the state of the chimney. I was told that the chimney was fine exteriorly as well as on the interior. I wanted the thimble taken out and patched, I've had critters come down the chimney in the past - so a cap was a wonderful idea. I wasn't expecting the crown - but the pictures showed that there wasn't much of the old one left, so yes that needed to be repaired and while he was up there why not take down the antenna....I certainly wasn't going to climb up there to take it down. They completed all of the work, cleaned-up and were back in the van in about an hours time. In my opinion I received all that I paid for and more....plus I never used the coupon.
Description of Work: I had the chimney swept, a new crown installed, a cap put on, the antenna taken down and a thimble taken out and the whole patched.

It went ok. Seems that they were not prepaired for the service. They had to wait for the drill and saw battery to be charged. Then they had to go off to lowes to get more supplies. They were gone for a hour and a half. It Started to rain and they walked in dirt and mud all over the floor. No shoe protectors to be found. They said they had just run out. Sure. T hey also missed one air intake after I showed where it was located. It took almosrt4 hours to complete

We needed our ducts cleaned after 31 years of forced hot air/ac system use, and bouts of respiratory ailments without source causes. I contacted Safeside, left a message and was contacted the next business day. The initial phone interview helped determine extent of service required, number of vents, different types of vents, options available and cost. The call lasted about 15 minutes. The estimate hovered around $400. Safeside representative was very cordial and flexible in scheduling. After setting up the appointment, Safeside representatives contacted me twice more prior to the service. Once to verify the appointment and details (I think it was a quality check), and once to see if we could amend our schedule trying to get the work done sooner. On the day of service 2 service representatives arrived wthin the appointed time frame. They introduced themselves and took note of our two pets, a cat and dog, as they went about their business identifiying and starting work on the vents. Interruptions to interact with our dog and alay his fears by one of the workers were effective and brief. A sanitizer product (option) was added to each duct as requested. No surprizes were found. But a set of two intake vents were intentionally by-passed since they were custom inset hardwood flooring vents that could have been damaged. They are not removable. The entire service lasted 3 hours and no trace of dirt or dust was left behind. The final cost with sanitizer came in a hair over $500. A little more than expected. Important "Do's" - accurate count of vents and trueing-up on which ones were/were not serviced to avoid cost over-run if you're doing this on a budget. The invoice document could be: 1.) better organized - commments were placed every where except in the comments section; 2) more explicit on which ducts were serviced (by floor, room/location; 3) whether any discounts were applied (i.e due to fewer ducts, Angie's List flyer, etc..). Overall, knowing what I know today, I would contract with Safeside again.
Description of Work: We needed our 16-18 heating/AC ducts cleaned. Including furnace air handling unit. Application of sanitizer solution throughout.

The company came out promptly to do a free consultation. We were impressed on how fast they got us an appointment and how punctual the men were....on a weekend, no less! My husband really liked the men who came out and said he thought they might be the company we go with for all the chimney work we need completed. The problem was the follow-through. After not receiving an email of the estimate, we called. The company did not have our file, did not know our email despite up providing it twice during the consult. Then we were told we would have it within 24 hours. That was a couple of weeks ago. So my husband called again. Again we were told an estimate would be written up and was asked for our email again. It never arrived, so we will go with someone else. The lack of either communication or organization of information was concerning to us. All we wanted was a timely estimate in writing. The other contractors we had visit got us their written estimate within hours of being at our house. If this company's estimate was reasonable, we would have given them the job, but no estimate, so we looked elsewhere.

I apologize about the slow follow up service. That is definitely not how I drew up our flow from estimate to completion. Dale did leave a message on 8/19th on Mr's cell phone to speak about stove options prior to sending an exact cost estimate. Then , apparently no further action occurred. That is unacceptable to me. I must say that we performed a very massive and technical move of our 15,000 square foot facility into an improved location during the week of the 15th. That doesn't make this situation better but I don't expect any further situations such as this. I hope , member, that you received quality service from the other chimney professional.

I thought the guy was very professional and what he suggested wasn't inaccurate. He just wanted to put a chimney cap on the chimney without fixing the flue pipe to prevent further deterioration, I think to save me money. I wasn't interested in doing that. He was just fine, I told him what I wanted but what he suggested was not what I wanted. I pressed him further and said that if I wanted to have the flue pipe what that would cost, which he quoted me. He was responsive, polite and came out when he said he would. He was professional but he wasn't really interested in doing what I thought was the best solution at a problem.

We requested a quote for chimney repairs. They came out to look at the problem, but never called us back. We called them more than 6 times asking for quote. Each time they apologized and said they would get right on it. Of course they never did, and never gave us the courtesy of a call back, even to say "no, we don't want to quote this for some reason." Last service date and cost is an estimate. I have used Safeside to clean my chimneys on more than one occasion. They have always been reliable, punctual, polite and pleasant. I am an avid fireplace user and always try to burn clean and use a self-cleaning log at the beginning/end of each season. Consistently between my prior condo and my present house, I have been told that my chimney was clean and barely required sweeping - both by Safeside and other service providers. During the last visit, I got the impression the staff was directed to upsell. The tech was VERY nice but advised me I should have my chimney cleaned more often, also that the minor cracking in my brick (it's a pre-fab unit). required a $800-$900 replacement job. They could order the parts and be back the following week and if I booked that day I would receive a discount. When I had the unit installed (not by Safeside), I was advised to expect some minor cracking. The entire firebox is encased in metal so not a fire hazard. I declined the service and have had no problem with the entire fireplace unit since. It is possible that I need to address this situation however, I would get another opinion or two before proceeding.

The work turned out good. They came out and did the cleaning, which was decent. They found a problem that they quoted us for. They did kind of whip up a sense of panic with the quote they gave us about what was going on and how dangerous it was. There was a tile of the insulation missing inside of our chimney, and they said that it could be causing leakage of CO2. We had bought the house a couple of years ago. They said that it looked like the tile had deteriorated because it had not been maintained and that we certainly needed to get something done about it right then because it was dangerous. We then had a different guy out from whom we got a second opinion. We found out it was not nearly as urgent or dangerous as they had said it was, but we were fine with that; they were polite and everything. The other guy said that it appeared that while building the house, because of the location of the missing tile, they had simply cut a corner as it was in a little bit of a more difficult place, so it looked like they had just never installed the tile. He said it was certainly something that we needed to get done at some point because the older the house and the rest of the insulation of the chimney got, the more unsafe it would be. When I called back and mentioned it to the owner of Safeside Chimney, he said that they were not trying to say that; obviously, they were trying to sell a product. When we do get it done, we will not use them. We were much more impressed with the other guy in the way he handled himself.

We were having things checked on the house. They estimated repairs on the top of the chimney. After we bought the house, we contracted them for the work. They ended up having to rebuild it three times. They did the capping and sealing at the top of our chimney. It was still leaking; I told them that this work was ridiculous. He sent somebody else out, and the thing blew off twice. I'm actually looking for another person to deal with the work. It still isn't done. They were prompt, and the price was probably fine.
