My wife and I just purchased this house in July. English ivy was strangling the back and side areas of the house, including a deck, and pushing up under the siding. I had thought there was underground piping for drainage from the down spouts, so Nick offered to do it by hand. As I was having someone come in and evaluate the drainage and two of the spouts were already blocked, I said to go ahead with a machine. Good thing as they could never have removed it by hand. As it turned out, there was only one pipe about 18" long and there were no other undergound pipes discovered near the surface. So, Nick brought in a backhoe and loader. Amazing, the machine was actually lifted off the ground ripping out the ivy. I wanted the ivy just cut off at ground level around the deck so the dead vines could serve as a trellis for a benign vine. As they proceeded, they discovered dozens of bricks that had been set as an unmortared wall and many slabs of slate. They moved these all to the side so I could reuse them. They also discovered a colony of burrowing bees, probably Colletes inaequalis. They buzzed about the first day harmlessly, but on the second, a worker was stung. They pulled a huge amount of biomass and a quarter of the invoice was for dump fees. The original estimate was for $1,500, but I told Nick not to worry about going over as I saw what they were encountering. (Note: The approximate cost of service give does not include taxes.) The people doing the job were Nick Bozzuto with two workmen and the job took two days Sept. 21-22. Now my wife and I have a very large area in which to plant flowers and no evil ivy. Nick was always careful about what he was doing, consulted with me, and always responded to all of my requests and questions. I think I got a bargain.
