THOROUGHSPECT, LLC

Pest Control, Animal Removal, Home inspection,

About us

Your home will be inspected & documented w/annotated phots provided to show what has made it in and how including but not limited to water in your basement, mice, bats, flying squirrels. In addition, This will help you understand what needs to be done to stop them from getting inside in the first place and then we can professionally seal it with non-chewable materials. We service lower Fairfield County, CT and parts of Westchester County, NY. Brian’s career in the pest control business began over 25 years ago. He spent three years in the southern United States learning from a world-renowned entomologist (among others) and helped start the Sentricon baiting program for termites with Dow Elanco. Brian advanced through the field to eventually run a major sales force and acquired a distinctive edge in the business. Through this experience, Brian realized he wanted to return to his home state of NY and create his own niche in the rodent control market. He developed a highly successful approach, rejecting the easy but environmentally unsound approach of poison – and instead relying on hard work, common sense, and the correct materials to prevent rodents from entering people’s homes in the first place. Fast forward a few years, and Brian began to realize there were additional niches in this area that needed to be more friendly towards the environment and the clients’ health. He therefore co-invented the Enviroboot® Dust Suppression System to help control the toxic silica dust that is produced when concrete is broken with a jackhammer. The result was a reduction in toxic dust greater than 97% according to the EPA and was awarded the 2006 US EPA CLEAN AIR EXCELLENCE AWARD. Brian M. Sweig has a special set of skills and licenses in NY and CT including Nuisance/Wildlife, Home Improvement, and Home Inspection (CT), Mold Assessment and looks forward to helping make your home a better place for you and your family.

Dear Brian, On the two-year anniversary of our home fire we think of you with great fondness and gratitude. When we hired you to manage our difficult situation with mice in our home, we never dreamt that you would save our lives. Although we had hired many people to work on this problem, until you no one had yet been able to help us beyond a short term fix. While you worked diligently to bring our home into a happy place for us, you noticed that we needed smoke detectors and other important factors to have a safe environment. It still amazes us to this day that you offered to help install the smoke detectors to ensure our safety and well-being (quite outside of the boundaries of your job). The fact is that we awoke in the middle of the night once our dishwasher caught on fire and ran out of our home to safety, all because of your kind and careful work. We want to thank you more than words can say, and with all of our hearts.
Description of Work: Identified areas of rodent infiltration or possible infiltration. To insure we remained rodent-free he sealed the perimeter of our house against rodents and installed underground piping to direct water away from our house. Trapped and disposed of rodents already in the house. Came up with and executed a plan to eliminate a mold issue without typically expensive mold remediation methods pushed by other companies.

Hi, Most reviews are great- this one is awesome! If I can do my job (that I love) and help prevent a disaster then I'm a happy camper. These were nice people and I'm glad things turned out ok in all directions. I have now been called back to seal the newly renovated home after the fire as the contractor could not rodent proof it as critters have been seen. Living rodent free will change your life!® Having properly updated smoke detectors will save it! Sincerely Brian M. Sweig

From the moment Brian stepped into our house, I knew he had more on his mind than just the exclusion process we signed up for. He spent about 2 hours going through the house to identify what rodent issues we had. I actually didn't tell him we had any issues outside of I heard some thumping in the attic (we had moved in 2 weeks prior). He took pictures and documented everything for us which took about a week to put together. That was just the initial inspection (Angie's deal). In addition to the exclusion related items, Brian went well beyond his scope of services to basically do another home inspection for us, identifying over a dozen things our home inspector missed, including a mold issue! Now I can't say I was excited to learn of these new issues having just moved in, but Brian went out of his way to explain everything in detail and give me comfort it was all manageable. He saw I was somewhat handy, so he walked me through the things I could take care of myself, and recommended service providers for the bigger things. He even went as far as taking care of a few things for me during the seal process. The seal itself took a couple weeks (5,500 sq ft colonial), including trapping / clearing the house. We had bats, flying squirrels, and mice; quite the party we were having in our basement and attic. Since the seal, we haven't had anything in the house even though Brian gladly responded to a couple false alarms over the winter. You might ask yourself why is this review titled bait and switch. I signed up for the Angie's deal because Thoroughspect was rated well and frankly it was very reasonable cost-wise to find out what I had going on in the attic. The bait it is you think you're getting an exterminator, and the switch is you get Brian. Without sharing all the other details, he genuinely cares about you and your family and is really there to be a partner not just a service provider. It's not everyday you're comfortable giving the keys to your house over to a stranger and his crew for a couple weeks with wife and young kids at home. As I've told Brian, I've never been happier working with someone on a real estate related project. Furthermore, he's still happy to take a call or respond to an email months after completing service. He's a wealth of knowledge and truly a great person, not just the next contractor looking to make a buck (although you should still plan on paying him as he's worth every dollar).

A day or so before the scheduled service. Thoroughspect (Brian) informed me that he couldn't make the date and offered to reschedule. Unfortunately, my schedule did not allow for reschedule then. I would have appreciated the return of the service fee since we could not agreed on a reschedule time. I guess Brian assumed that he met his commitment.

So I rarely get anything except A grades so I am not sure how I should respond to someone who Could not find the time to reschedule with notice. Everyone is busy but to give a contractor an F for having to reschedule is pretty harsh. I'm sure I'm not the first contractor or person whom they've had an issue with even though we never met. I guess since I work so hard to do the right thing for so many realistic clients I should expect one of "those" to pop up every now and then. If your a realistic person who wishes to have a great inspection then I would enjoy meeting you. Karma! This reschedule was 2 yrs ago! Brian

It can't be easy to exclude critters from a house built in 1835, but it's been a year since Brian did the work and we have seen no evidence of rodents or bats since then. (Before Thoroughspect, such evidence was abundant.) We would hire him again in a heartbeat; in fact are planning to do so to get his opinions on a porch that we're remodeling.

Highly recommended services. Very professional and thorough. Brian and crew went above and beyond to do the job as well as possible. Quotes come with sticker shock but I have confidence that the quality of outcome (no critters and no poison; guaranty) justifies the expense. Brian first provided us an excellent Fault Finders inspection, identifying that we had more "pets" than we thought we did. The inspection was very useful, identifying not only critter entry points but also other issues that had not surfaced during the purchase inspection of the house (only one year ago!) related to moisture, installation, and gas. Subsequently, Brian and the Thoroughspect crew undertook to seal the access points from critters. Though it's still early, we believe they did a thorough and effective job. They were all extremely professional, creating no difficulties for us, working in a diligent manner, appearing and leaving at the times they said they would, and leaving the house and yard spotless -- in fact, in better condition -- than when they started. Additionally, Brian would usually send over photos daily of the access points his crew had found as well as the progress of repairs. Brian also spent more than ample time with us through the job when we could be home, too, either helping his crew, providing quality control for their work, and providing other advice and numerous extras to assist us. It's only a few days later, but the sounds that led us to believe we might have other occupants in the house have all stopped. Two particular extras deserve note - among many others. First, Brian helped us discover a gas leak in a furnace ... literally minutes after a technician had "serviced" the unit. Brian helped uncover and suggest a remediation plan for a serious risk outside his scope of work: excellent outcome for us for which I'm very grateful. Second, Brian's been a huge help and guide to us as we adopted a dog.
Description of Work: Thoroughspect (1) provided a Fault Finders inspection; (2) provided sealing services for our house (approx 3000 sqft); (3) sealed the foundation of an addition to our house; and (4) sealed and replaced a ridge vent on our roof through which some critters had chewed.

Hello, Thanks for the nice review. I also appreciate the extra credit on finding a gas leak, and helping with the dog adoption. When I quote sealing a home from top to bottom it is exactly that- total seal. It is impossible to seal a home from critters without spending days ( a week) finding all those little access points that mice, bats, and flying squirrels are either using now or will in the future. I wind up sealing a good deal of homes that other companies spent from a few hours to a day or two with foam and no real game plan. I also find a tremendous amount of poison in homes right after these simulated seals that will make things appear ok for a short time and then the critters are loud and clear once again. Zero poison, zero foam in the can. These were very nice people who spent a great deal of time with me learning about their home and I enjoyed it. After hearing loud chewing noises in my living room ceiling almost every night for a long time, I went to Angie?s list and found Thoroughspect, LLC. I knew critters had to be getting in through broken soffits, and who knows where else, but to find a company that would not only get rid of the critters, but also to make the necessary repairs so that they would not return seemed like an almost impossible task. That is until Brian and his superb team of workers arrived on the scene. During the inspection Brian explained that I most likely had flying squirrels in my attic besides the usual field mice. Further inspection showed that woodpeckers had made a huge hole on the side of the house. The possibility of bats was also mentioned. At this point I felt like my house was a wildlife refuge! Brian's inspection also revealed areas in the basements and attics that showed signs of mold due to moisture there and also thanks to the critters leaving their mark everywhere. Brian gave me the name of a great mold remediation company and I hired that company as well. After the mold remediation company emptied the attics, the garage and the basements of junk and of all the contaminated insulation, Brian and his team started sealing the house and setting up traps. Despite the bitter cold temperatures, Brian?s men worked constantly and were totally focused on their work. The amount of work that these guys did was mind boggling! At least 14 mice and 2 flying squirrels ended up in traps. I don?t hear gnawing sounds anymore and my attics, basement and garage ceilings are no longer cemeteries for dead rodents. Rodents are very destructive. When the ceiling and the old insulation was taken out of the garage, workers found a number of chewed wires which had to be replaced. And that was not the only place that had chewed wires. If you think you have rodents in your house-do yourself a favor and call Thoroughspect, LLT before they destroy your property and create even larger problems down the line. Thank you Brian for being so passionate and knowledgable about your work and for all the help you have given me and are still giving me to help make my house a home again. When I couldn't find a plumber the day before Christmas to fix a bad leak you came through with the name of wonderful plumber who did. You go more than the extra mile for your customers! The irony of this whole situation is that I have been breeding mice for at least 27 years as part of my job and I had to hire someone to get rid of them at home!
Description of Work: Brian Sweig inspected my house to determine what critters had decided to make my home their home. I decided to hire his company to get rid of the critters and to seal the house to prevent them from coming back. Using heavy gauge wire as well as heavy copper mesh, broken soffits, cracks in the chimney, open ridge vents in the roof were all fixed (just to mention a few things that were done) . Traps were set in the basements and in the attics. 2 Santa Fe dehumidifiers were installed in the basements to take care of moisture that was causing unhealthy mold to grow.

The inspection was very helpful and thorough (as the company name suggests). The report took time to arrive since the inspector was injured after the inspection was performed. But we were impressed with the report and chose Thoroughspect to do the work recommended in the report. All the work that was done was excellent. The inspector also provided us with the name of a company for mold remediation and attic insulation (NJ Mold/Eco Air) and they were great as well.

Excellent professional inspection. Unfortunately , I did not receive his original email proposal for remedial services and I posted a review dated Jan 22, 2016, stating that. Well, I did buy the trap but couldn't tell whether it or any others had decided to leave, too. I decided to get a certified professional wildlife control officer (part of a national organization) to take a look and he said the hole was definitely caused by a bird, probably a woodpecker, due to the droppings underneath the hole, and the nesting material that the carpenter found when the trap was taken down. He said flying squirrels prefer very high, three-story, dilapidated buildings to live in, not this one-level building where there's a huge park with 20-foot tall trees about 30 yards away. He said if it was a flying squirrel, they can glide 200 feet from the tallest tree (two houses over) but there were not a lot of options once the squirrel got to the the building -- nowhere to go but down onto the ground, and that's not what they like to do; they prefer to stay at treetop level and glide between high points. The wildlife control officer also went into the attic and didn't find any presence of squirrels. I'm not sure whether it was Thoroughspect or the wildlife control officer, but I was told that the repair to the soffit had to be metal, not wood; the carpenters were able to construct/mold and paint a metal flashing piece that looked like the other soffits. The wildlife control officer told me that I couldn't simply remove the limbs on the left side of tree and that the whole tree would need to be removed as it look very unbalanced.
Description of Work: I was concerned about mice and other rodents, throughout the old 1941 cape-style house, so was hoping to hear what he had to say about that, plus a hole in the soffit of our attached one-floor in-law apartment that had was the result of a bird or squirrel. He never went into the garage attic of the area where the hole was or climbed up on a ladder to take a closer look, and ignored the bird droppings below that fallen at waist level. He told me it was a flying squirrel and that we should get an exit-only trap. He did say that I needed to remove the limbs on the left side of the tree, where the branches were touching the roof of the house, allowing any squirrel to get access to the roof. He did an inspection of the rest of the house, including an attic in the main house which possibly had asbestos in a crawlspace, and said there was mold in the basement, pointed out that I could get a condensator pump for the dehumidifier that could drain through the washer/dryer waste water line, also said we had a mild gas leak near the meter outside the house. I MUST add, that he did the other inspections which were VERY USEFUL, and unexpected, so I thought the $59 price was indeed worth it.

Hello, I spoke with this client a few minutes ago and went over my findings from the inspection which was for mice. She said she thought that she gave me a positive review and appreciated the additional info on potential mold in her home. The additional info on how to make her dehumidifiers bucketless so it would save her time and effort of changing buckets daily. She said the pictures of her attic that I had sent her were of only one attic and that she remembered after an hour while I was inspecting that there was another attic that she showed me as I was basically getting into my car. I love to show people what I find in and around their homes and for the most part it is understood and appreciated. Thanks for the review Brian

Was an incredible inspection. His attention to detail was second to none, he took all the time needed to review diligently (did not rush at all). His education on an array of topics including chimney repair, roof work, electrical, was just astounding, and it's amazing how all these areas can tie back to moisture issues in a home. He did a better review of my home than my original house inspector. No pressure to purchase other services, he was just incredibly helpful. Anyone who retains his services will be 100% satisfied with his work and will be thankful they did. The information he provided me was invaluable, and I know he would do the same for any other home owner as well. Thanks again

Brian (owner) came and performed a more thorough inspection of my home than the home inspector did when I purchased it. Not only was he inspecting for pest damage, but he gave me many suggestions, and direction for other things that eventually needed to be addressed on my home - not at all related to what he would do...but just more for my safety and general information. All the work that Brian and team did was done flawlessly and at price that was very fair. The front of my home had several signficant holes in the wood siding as well as along the frame of my home caused by woodpeckers. When the work was completed, including painting where the damage was, my house looked perfect again. I would trust Brian and team to inspect any home I ever purchased. He is not only professional but he is knowledgeable about all aspects of a home. He is kind and professional, and did an amazing job. I would highly recommend Thoroughspect.

Hello all, While I don't perform Home inspections I do find a good deal of faults in homes and for more than 20 years my clients have really appreciated it. While I still haven't found "Hoffa" I have found some pretty cool things from gas leaks to mold issues that were affecting people's health. I get holiday cards from time to time as most clients appreciate the above and beyond approach. Check out our Faultfinder™ Inspection as you won't believe what the bang for the buck is! Thanks and happy holidays Brian

When I was confronted with a major infestation of flying squirrels/bats in my attic, I did a fair amount of research and found that most services used toxic chemicals to control these flying rodents. This was not what I wanted in my house under any circumstances. I found Thoroughspect on Angie's List. Made the call with my list of questions only to spend almost an hour on the phone with Brian going over exactly what he would do, without using ANY chemicals, to solve my problem. I was sold! Brian first examined the perimeter of my attic and my foundation. His proposal included photos of the areas where the critters were making their way in and what type of trap or seal he would use where. He set up one way traps for live capture, sealed small spaces with copper mesh and wire cloth with adhesive and one way exit traps were installed where they was space. Brian or a member of his staff have returned about 3 or 4 times to inspect the traps during the past eight months since we began this odyssey. On every visit and contact with Thoroughspect, I felt very comfortable with the ability, thoroughness and cleanliness of Brian and his crew. Once the "mating" season for rodents had passed and there was no sign of additional infestation, Brian suggested another firm be brought in to sanitize the infested area with an air scrubber to remove all rodent fecal matter, disinfect with an EPA Registered cleanser and replace the insulation. I was very impressed with how professional and courteous Brian, his staff and the other firm were at all stages of my "problem". While it was more expensive that others, it was chemical free and I am VERY comfortable in my house! Thank you Thouroughspect!

I tried to purchase a big deal that they had available on Angie's List. I called and tried to make an appointment. They told me that they only do a single family houses and not a townhouse, like mine. I chose another company that does work on townhouses. Angie's List asked me to write a review for Thoroughspect. I felt that it was not clear that they did not service a townhouse. The service provider then called me and asked me to remove my review. They also sent me a certified letter asking me to remove the review. Fortunately, I did not hire this company because they bothered me by calling me and sending me a certified letter asking me to remove the review.

Hello, So every now and again you deal with someone who is simply not realistic. Here are the facts. It was an after hours purchase of a big deal and I responded through the message center within 1 hr that I would get back to her the next day. I looked up the address so I could figure out where she would fit into my inspection availability and realized this was a multi residential home that is impossible to seal as all four sides cannot be gotten to. I then called her to let her know this and she was not upset and agreed to contact Angies and I thought that was pretty normal. Then the fun started where she actually gave me all F's and said I was unresponsive as a company and wasted her time so I called and asked why she would leave a review in that manner. She then hung up on me so I sent a letter asking her to remove the untrue review as I work extremely hard and honestly to earn them. Her revised review should have included what I have just stated but the good news is if you have a free standing home Thoroughspect can in most cases seal it without the use of any poisons as "Living rodent free will change your life!®" I love what I do and look forward to inspecting your home. Respectfully Brian M. Sweig

Brian was very thorough and knowledgable, very helpful. We decided to hire Thoroughspect to seal our home, and that went very well too. When I had a concern or question Brian responded very quickly. Will use this company again.

Very informative inspection that provided practical tips that my home inspector did not even point out. While the inspection was worthwhile, the estimated prevention treatment was pricey.

Howdy, Many thanks for the great review of my inspection as it is appreciated. I absolutely enjoy teaching clients about their homes and how to make them better. Brian Sweig, the founder and owner, is responsive, professional and willing to explain, clarify and 'educate' customers on all things to do with pest control. He is also happy to provide other tips for home improvement that we found most helpful. His team is punctual, work well and get the job done. Brian will personally check in on the progress. They use only 'green' methods and do not use any toxic chemicals, which is quite advanced thinking. We'd recommend them.
Description of Work: Sealed entire house from roof to basement with pest-proof mesh, cleaned out attic of bats and squirrels without killing them, repaired exterior areas near attic where pests could enter, reset traps to be monitored by them in a couple weeks.

General exterminating, placing dangerous poisons in your home! Generally the foolish things that most companies offer just to make a buck. We never use foam to seal homes as it does not hold up for very long. Home or bank inspections. Inspections or services concerning apartments, multi-residential as it's not possible to get 100% sealed. We also do not inspect non-owner occupied homes as renters do not have authorization to modify homes permanently. Inspection for lawsuit purposes.
