It went fine, except that the first time they showed up they didn't have a tall enough ladder. It seems that the person who came and gave me a quote didn't communicate the need for a tall ladder to the crew that did the work.

My review covers a bit more than just the 2015 spring/summer lawn mowing season. I have gotten quotes from them for fall leaf clean-up, tree work, and lawn fertilization, and find their prices to be on the high side. With these higher prices, one would expect excellence in the quality of the work as well as the professionalism of the company. I found both to be a bit lacking. My biggest complaint with the lawn mowing service is that the weed whacking (trimming) quality was awful. The kid they had doing it would zip around the yard without care and attention and burn the edge grass, till by mid-season it was dead. As the weeks went on, there was nothing left for him to trim as the grass in all the edge areas was dead. We discussed it to him as well as called the company about it on a couple occasions through the season and finally, by the end of the season, he began to put some care into his work, but it was too late for our grass. We will need to replant all the edge areas this spring.

The crew was always punctual. Such craftsmen! Bill Lillie was here constantly checking on the work and in touch with us about the progress and details of the work. Their stonework is guaranteed for life. The project was very costly, but enhances the property so nicely and it beats having that old deck we had for 30 years that took up the entire backyard. The patio is giving us a lovely new living room outdoors. We are thrilled with the result. It's absolutely beautiful. We still need to do a lot of planting and landscaping on our own, or we may contract with them to do more. Stay tuned.
Description of Work: Excavated the backyard after tree removal, and graded it. Installed a bluestone patio.

Overall I am pleased with the final results. Linda is very knowlegible on what does well in the area. The yard looks good and the runn off trench keeps everything from washing away. The lanscaping is much lower maintenance and deer hardy which is what I requested. Scheduling was sometimes difficult as they are juggling multiple jobs and the weather. My smaller projects were fit in. Email communication has been fine. I would use there services again.
Description of Work: I've used Sprigs and Twigs three times. The first to develope long term (3 year) landscaping plans. The second and third to complete 5/8 of the plans. I am currently waiting for the 1 year follow up to discuss some tonthe plants that didn't thrive over the hard winter.

35 foot Japanese maple with issues. A large branch from a nearby tree had fallen into the center of the J maple during Sandy the storm., Other ice and events had caused more damage. In addition, the J Maple had been shaded for many years by the tree with the offending large branch. It is still a nice, open shade tree. growing a bit close to the house, but with the tree(s) to the south removed, it is now getting lots of sun. Asked Sprigs and Twigs to take a look., got a quick reply and an on-the- spot estimate (which I thought was a bit pricey). I decided to give them a try anyway. Set up a schedule, they called a day early and asked if and quot;nowand quot; was a good time. It was. They took care of the J maple, and gave me some good advice on taking care of smaller trees. An altogether positive experience.

I happened to come across the negative review of Sprigs and Twigs and must say I was astonished. I cannot say enough positive things about them. We first met them in Connecticut and discussed some landscaping ideas on the basis of what we had seen them do on other properties in the neighborhood. They provided us with a property sketch, complete with plant descriptions, in both a PowerPoint presentation and a large paper map. This included installation of a gravel driveway bordered by railroad ties. We were so impressed that we asked them to provide some ideas for our New York home. Total cost was approx $5000. This was in 2006. The work they did for us in New York was masterful. They used the same approach; but also educated us on what plants would work better in shade, the pros/cons of perennials vs annuals, etc. We decided to use them for a complete overhaul of the entire property. It turned out exactly as promised and significantly enhanced the value of our home. I recall they used students to do the installation. Total cost was approx $17000. This was in 2008. We have since returned to Connecticut full time, and would definitely consider engaging them again.
Description of Work: Sprigs & Twigs performed significant landscaping for us at two homes, one in Connecticut and one in New York. The Connecticut house, a beach cottage, had a relatively small yard but needed a new driveway. The New York house, our principal residence at the time, was a large property that needed a complete overhaul in terms of landscaping.

The clean up was pretty good. A bank that they had destroyed by cutting down too much, continued to be a focus and was only barely addressed with a couple cheap plants. Lack of mulch was a major problem but it would have and quot;cost too muchand quot;. There were no annuals planted for color, new plantings were minimized. The bottom line was cost. Cost was huge and not at all in line with service provided. It has since been noted that you can receive twice as much for your money by hiring someone else.

Response from Sprigs & Twigs Inc
Over the years, (deleted member name) has found it necessary to send in multiple critiques of my company, each time giving us lower scores, even though we haven't worked for her for more than three years. Her critique this time is particularly baffling because the job she describes is completely different than anything we were ever contracted to do, so perhaps she has us confused with another company or she has just made it up. Specifically, 1)We never worked for her in 2011; (the last "tree work" we did for her was 2008 and that was stump grinding), 2) we never did a job for her valued at approximately $3,000, 3) the last time we worked for her was a spring cleanup in 2010, 4) for the clean-up work in 2010, there was a detailed, multi-page contract that specifically listed the work that she approved. We weeded, pruned and removed debris, etc.- cleanup type work. The contract did not call for planting annuals, the contract specifically stated that we were limited to using the 12 bags of mulch she already had purchased elsewhere (she didn't want to spend money on additional mulch). Sprigs & Twigs work speaks for itself, see www.SprigsandTwigs.net. I can be contacted directly at 860-235-0752 if you have and questions. Bill Lillie, CEO, Sprigs & Twigs, Inc

I called the number that I got from Angie's list and they were able to make an appointment to come and make an estimate that evening. The estimate was much lower than I had expected, so we hired them. They gave a window of time of about a month in which I would fall into their schedule, and said they would call the day before to verify the work. Yesterday the doorbell rang and it was them. They had finished a different job in my area early, so stopped to do the job then. The four guys that they sent to do the work were VERY professional. They got the job done very quickly and cleanly, cleaning up all leftover debris from the trees and even throwing in removal of an extra stump at the side of our yard at no extra cost. I will definitely hire this company again for future work that needs doing on the property.
Description of Work: We had 2 large, unsightly tress to be removed; a row of overgrown hemlock; and a large cherry tree stump left over from removing the tree myself. Also removal of all wood and leaving the stump grindings in the holes.

Sprigs and Twigs came out to our house to give us a price to remove a number of trees, trim a number of trees and remove 2 lines of bushes. Access to do the work was pretty easy, except perhaps a couple of trees close to the house on one side. They gave us a price of $4000 dollars for the tree work and $2000 for the removal of the bushes. Neddles to say we thought that was quite high, especially for the bush removal. So I decide to call a local tree removal company that I used before at another property. He gave me a price of $1500, and did the work in half a day. I am sure that Sprigs and Twigs would have done a good job, but cosidering the cost, they were not even an option

All tree companies price their services based on the amount of time they estimate a job will take. There certainly is some variability in different companies daily rates( plus or minus a few percent), but there has to be more to this particular situation. For us to quote a job to take more than a week and to have someone do it for a half day is a difference in scope, not a normal price difference between companies.

Working with Sprigs and Twigs, especially Linda, is a treat. She has a wealth of plant knowledge and an eye for design. Her first visit to our house was to discuss our wish list, how we use our yard, and to hear about any issues we wanted addressed. Usable space in the backyard was limited due to a large hill, so we knew a retaining wall was needed and we ultimately included a stone patio as well to provide an outdoor dining/entertaining area. After taking measurements from that first visit, Linda returned with a large architectural drawing of our house and the garden designs. This was accompanied by a video presentation highlighting the various flowers, plants and trees that would be in each garden, so we could see height, colors, etc. Linda was very thorough and explained every detail to us during this two hour meeting. She also incorporates functionality into her designs – several plants attract butterflies to the yard and Linda also included herbs we could use for cooking. On the day the gardens were installed, several trucks and people were on-site to get the job done. The crew clearly had assigned tasks and everyone got to work immediately. Linda was there as well directing the staff and placing the plants in the gardens. It was very impressive to watch so many people working as a team. The installation took nearly the entire day followed by clean up. Any debris, mulch, dirt, etc was swept up from the patio, porches and driveway. The crew left everything looking even better than before they arrived! No detail was overlooked. We highly recommend Sprigs and Twigs to anyone who wants beautiful gardens designed and installed by a very professional and detail-oriented company.
Description of Work: Sprigs & Twigs designed and installed two gardens for us, one in the back yard and the other in the side/front yard. We used Sprigs &Twigs tree services in the past and were very impressed with their professionalism and attention to detail. And because we've heard such wonderful things about their garden designs and Linda's process from friends, we didn't even bother getting any other quotes. Sprigs & Twigs' has a reputation for being the best in the area and we didn't want to settle.

The tree guys were very professional and clearly knew what they were doing. We specifically looked for a fully insured company, one with tree experience and a licensed arborist on staff. All the equipment and trucks looked well maintained and the three guys got straight to work, despite our offer of coffee and donuts! The tree in the front by the street was especially tricky since it is a busy road. The truck set up was spot on to get the job done while minimally impacting our neighbors or traffic. The job took several hours to complete but the missing trees were the only indication anything happened! All the wood was put through a wood chipper and the yard was completely cleaned up, all debris raked up and the driveway swept up too. We have used Sprigs and Twigs for landscape and stonework services too, and highly recommend the company to anyone who wants quality work done by a professional and knowledgable team.
Description of Work: Sprigs & Twigs removed three large trees from our property. We had two by the house/driveway removed to open up the yard and give us more sunlight. The other was in the front yard near the street. The tree was clearly unhealthy and the branches were breaking off every time a storm came through. We were concerned bigger branches or the tree would fall on the house in a wind or snow storm.

A tree had been damaged in the blizzard; I had removed one large fallen branch but the entire tree was compromised. I called for an estimate and was quickly given what I felt was a very reasonable price to remove the tree. The work was done within a week from the estimate, including honoring a coupon from the Angie's web site for stump grinding.. Everything was clean and I am very satisfied with Sprigs and Twigs.

There was not enough oversight supervision by the owner. He sent out young people to do the job, but if you're going to have a deck removed you should be out looking at it and not leaving voice messages and having them to do something and the customer having to pay for it. They made a lot of mistakes. They actually caused our basement to flood because when they buried the gutters the owner didn't come back out and check it. It was right before the hurricane a couple of years and my husband just had a knee operation. We have a finished basement where part of it is low grade, but there was a hole in the guttering in the way that they drained it. I asked him where did they place the drain things and he said they'll come back and do it when they do more landscaping. They gave us an outrageous landscaping amount for our yard to do a small part. It was like $7000 and we actually paid for the design and there wasn't a rebate back on it if we used them or anything like that. None of the plans that we asked him we wanted. We're seniors and we did not want a lot of maintenance, but we wanted a lot of evergreens because we have pretty harsh weather up here. They didn't finish off the drains in the hopes of coming back and doing landscaping, so in other words kind of leaving it half finished. They buried one that sunk my walk way. When we bought the house 5 years ago there was a three layered deck which was older. Some of the deck was coming out the back door and then a lower part was where you could tell they had added on to it. They had redone some of the house and redid the opening to the back door of the 1948 ranch. Sprigs and Twigs didn't do any surveillance. They sent some kids over to pull down the deck and they were pulling it out of the foundation. He was supposed to be an engineer and his wife was the landscaper. They subcontracted the patio which they did an okay job, but they never came back and finished that off. They pounded it in, but my husband was in the hospital and I was going back and forth to see him. The guys were nice enough and everything, but they were supposed to come back to finish it off with some sand and stuff like that. They never came back. When the basement flooded I was bailing water out of one of the window wells while the hurricane was going on. They had laid one of the drain pipes for the guttering out to the sidewalk and not only was the water coming out of the gutter it was going right into the flowerbed that went into the window. They also left a hump where they dug it out of and therefore the water was just coming that way. My husband called the owner and he said that he was going to stop the payment on the check unless it is fixed. The owner did not come back out to check what his employees were doing. He came back and replaced one piece of guttering, but that was it and he never came back to finish anything else. We didn't get them off of Angie's List but used them because we were needing people to do lawn care. They did okay as long as they were mowing, but that was it. There was no trimming or edging and we were paying them $60 every couple of weeks just to do that. Our yard is like a quarter acre and they wanted about $25,000 to do our landscaping. We were not wanting a lot of bushes and flowers. We just wanted it graded away from the house because the previous owner had flattened it toward the house and we're on an incline going up. Their idea of doing that was putting an indentation diagonally across the backyard. We had some interesting experiences and have spent a lot of money with them. My husband worked the contracts with these guys. One of them did the stone work and some people did the other stuff. He tried to come out and say something about the foundation which is concrete. The deck was attached to the foundation with a bolt and he told us that it looked like it was there before. I told him that it wasn't opened before and it was covered by the deck which you could tell. I think they got busy and started to get other contracts. Nobody ever came back to check how things were going. Nobody ever came back to see how the customer is being serviced. My husband tried to call them about the sidewalk and nobody ever returned our calls. I thought they were high and you expect a certified licensed and bonded company to be higher than the mom and pop places, but you also expect a higher level of professionalism. When they found out we weren't going to finish paying thousands of dollars to do landscaping everything just stopped. The people that did the stone work did a good job, but Sprigs and Twigs never came back and I'm assuming it was because of the owner. I wouldn't hire them again unless I got an iron clad contract about warranties and stuff.
Description of Work: We had a lot of work done by Sprigs & Twigs. They started by doing some maple tree and then they gave me a landscaping estimate. They did some gutters, removed a deck, and put in a stone patio. They also buried some guttering, did some drainage work, and built a wall.

Response from Sprigs & Twigs Inc
This assessment was shocking to read, especially since it was a year-and-a-half after the fact and during and since the work was done, there has been no hint of any issues. This report was written by Memebr, who was not present for much of the work described and not involved with most of the conversations about the various projects. I am the owner she refers to and virtually all of my contact was with her husband Member. Member and I had each other’s cell phones and personal and work email addresses and communication was frequent with both myself and my Office Manager who took several of his calls to make payments. We worked for this customer on 20 different occasions from May to October 2011 and did six types of work: 1) Lawn Care, Cleanup, Aeration, etc for about $1000 total, 2) Landscape Design developing a master plan for their property to be executed over a number of years $1,800, 3) Stonework – retaining wall construction and repair, patio construction, sitting wall construction and basement bulkhead door sealing, about $15,000, 4) Tree Service work (3 different occasions) about $5,400, 5) Regrading the backyard, adding top soil and running downspouts underground to the street and other discharge points, about $2,200, 6) removal of an old wooden deck, $900. The complaint that I (the owner) did not provide enough supervision when the deck was removed is simply not true. I was there the entire time and ran the job because it was a demo and was fun to do. I directed the deck cuts, the heavy machinery winching operations and defined the interface location for the stone patio. I discovered the bulkhead door that was buried under the deck and came up with the plan to repair the rusted out metal that was letting water into the basement and I also discovered a large cement platform that was buried under the deck by previous owners. I redesigned the patio with the masons to provide a sitting wall to cover the cement platform. I left the job site when the trucks were being loaded with the debris. I do not remember seeing Member at all throughout the process. She complains about our “young people” that were on the job. Other than myself, the people on that job were full time employees between the ages of 22 and 38, all college graduates and experienced with heavy equipment and landscaping. The job went flawlessly and the subsequent stone patio was excellent (see our website). Her complaint that “They didn't finish off the drains in the hopes of coming back and doing landscaping” is just not true. We completed the contracted work and installed underground 4” piping that took the downspout drains to the street and other discharge points in a typical manner. At the street end the customer had intended to install a stone wall in the future and our contract said that we would integrate the drain in the yet to be installed stone wall without charge. The wall was never installed and what is there now is a finished product. Her complaint that “They gave us an outrageous landscaping amount for our yard to do a small part”, is extremely misleading and misrepresents what we were contracted to do. The customer paid us to develop a master plan for their entire property. It was a massive job with over 530 perennials, shrubs and trees and included a transplanting plan, rock pathways, stone walls and stone patio design. It was to be executed in phases over a number of years. We charged them $1800 for the plan. Once we complete a design, the customer gets all of the design products, i.e., construction drawings and design materials and is under no obligation to hire us to do the installation and is welcome to hire whomever they would like. We are a national award winning design and installation company and this customer received a first class product. See our website for examples of our work. If a reader of Angie’s List would like to see what was done for this customer, I would be more than pleased to share it with you. Her complaint that “There was a whole (sic)(hole) in the guttering and the way that they drained it. I asked him about where they placed the drain things, he said they will come back and do that when they do more landscaping”. I have no idea what she’s talking about. We took the downspout drain from the discharge point underground to the street and to other discharge points, a straightforward job, no other work was intended or planned. Part of the future landscape installation was to add garden beds along the left side of the house, bring in top soil and grade the land toward the street. This work was never approved by the customer. Her complaint that “We did not want a lot of maintenance and we wanted a lot of evergreens”, is without basis in fact and exactly what she got. The first sentence of her garden design product stated the design included “Low maintenance, hearty plants throughout with demonstrated tolerance for your Sun-Full Shade environment.” Low-maintenance gardens are our specialty and the only thing we design. Also, there were a lot of evergreens (i.e., 45) in the design not counting a number of evergreens already on the property that were being transplanted into various places in the garden. In several conversations that I had with the husband, Member, in mid to late 2011 he explained that their master plan for the property was put on hold by money problems when he required surgery and they were unable to financially continue. He never threatened to stop payment on a check, always paid his bills and there was never a single complaint about quality. We actually expected that they would be in touch in the future to continue the work. As far as phone calls not being returned, while we are not perfect, we always, always return customer calls, immediately if we can. Member and I had each others cell phone numbers and email addresses and we communicated frequently that way. I do not recall ever speaking to Member other than initial meetings early in 2011. The comments written by this customer are an outrageous misrepresentation of the truth. I continue to be baffled why people wait years to mention that they are unhappy and choose to write in such a scathing, exagerated, untruthful way. There was never a hint of dissatisfaction from either Member at the time the work was being done. Sprigs & Twigs prides ourselves and stands by the quality of our work and all of the work we did for this customer was no exception. You can judge the quality of our work for yourself by looking at our portfolios on our website and reading dozens of customer testamonials, see www.SprigsandTwigs.net. The sales process was quite good, but then it went downhill. I could go into great detail about the myriad of issues, but I really don't want to waste a lot of time on Sand T. I will say that when I raised a question during the installation process, the response I received was condescending and dismissive, at best. When I requested a meeting while the work was still underway, they didn't have time for me. The communication after the work commenced was awful. It was hard to believe I was dealing with the same company which had made the sales pitch. The design looked much better on paper than it did in reality. I say this as a homeowner who has hired other landscapers when I lived elsewhere, and have been satisfied with the results. The quality of the installation did not meet my expectations. Within a relatively short time, grass was growing in the beds. The stone walkway looked like I had installed it. As for the design...I had indicated that since I had a family event planned, I wanted to the plants to be of sufficient size. They re-priced (increased) their bid to take that into consideration, but many (most) of the plants were still quite small. I had indicated the date of the event so that the design would take this into consideration, but by the time the event occurred there was practically nothing in bloom. I could go on and on. Before I paid the final bill, Linda (one of the owners) did apologize for being and quot;snippyand quot; (I believe that is the word she used in her apology) after the fact, and they did offer to come to the house after the work was complete to discuss it. However, the overall experience was so unpleasant and unsatisfying that I opted to decline, and wrote the final check. As for pricing, I knew I was paying above market as I had a competing bid. I opted for Sand T because I expected to get quality results and professionalism, but this was not the case.
Description of Work: S&T did work for me in the summer of 2012 - I'm approximating the date. I was planning a family event and wanted to have some landscape design and installation work done. They designed and installed a large bed in the back of my house, as well as a stone pathway and small stone patio.

Response from Sprigs & Twigs Inc
Overall, this project started with an exceptional design and finished with a pristine garden installation. Along the way, there was much frustration as the homeowner attempted to take over and control every step of the installation process. We initially acquiesced when she insisted that a particular garden curve was not per plan and we changed it even though it was, in fact, exactly what the dimensioned drawing called for. As the installation proceeded, we adhered to the contract and our standards and procedures, much to the chagrin of the customer. Her husband was present the entire time and expressed his pleasure with how it was turning out. She was unhappy about the plants not being of “sufficient size”, nevertheless, she got the largest plants available. She complained about the number of plants in bloom when her family event took place. The garden was installed June 19-21 and her event was July 4. It is naïve and totally unrealistic to expect that a newly planted garden will all be in bloom “on-demand” that quickly. Even though she is well aware, she did not mention in her evaluation that we did a considerable amount of work that was not in our scope of work so that everything would look wonderful for the family event. Specifically, we weeded and pruned a garden bed adjacent to the patio, we deadheaded, pruned, fertilized and watered all of the planters and pots on the deck, we removed all of the spider webs on the deck, windows, sliding glass door, basement walkout and propane gas tank, we scrubbed and washed down the deck and all of the benches on the deck and we added some annuals for color for the family event. She was not charged for any of these things and the property looked great for the event. The member withheld final payment for a while, but was unwilling to discuss what she was unhappy about to allow us to address any of her concerns. As I said above, her garden was pristine when we completed work. These guys and gals are lovely. They came out when promised for the estimate, beat the other two crews we had talked to, came on the day they said they would, and did the job with zero fuss. Highly recommended.

It was a great experience..very professional!
Description of Work: Trimmed broken or dead branches. Removed branches leaning on house and service wires. Removed small scrub trees. All dead limbs etc were removed and ground up. Considering all that was done there was little noise. I did not need to be there. The estimate took little time. They were experts.
