My issue with Mark was that from the very beginning I was made to feel as though he was doing me a favor by taking on 'such a small account'. His work was generally thorough however, when my mother did reach out to him to have his team come back to make it safer for her to exit her driveway (tall snow banks) it became a nuisance, He actually told me that he was 'having more trouble with my account than he does with his million dollar customers' I was under the impression that every customer is important. Even the small ones. Just beware.
Description of Work: I hired this company to maintain the lawn and clear the snow at my mom's home in suburban CT.
It went great. First they had to remove a ground level wood deck and some pieces of a brick patio, and remove all of the wood and debris. Then they installed a beautiful blue stone patio plus a step down from the kitchen. Mark estimated 2 weeks but it only took about 6 days. They arrived promptly every morning around 8:30 and worked steadily through the day, even when the weather got cold and windy. They left no mess or debris anywhere.

We have been so pleased with the service Mark offers; everything is done with excellence! Mark's team appears weekly, without fail, and does a beautiful job on the lawn. My husband likes a well-manicured look to the lawn, and these guys have a nice touch. Additionally, they are very courteous and conscientious. A few weeks ago, a friend aerated and reseeded our lawn the morning of our scheduled mowing. I did not pick-up on the bad timing, and failed to give Mark a head's up. But, when his team arrived to mow, they noticed the fresh aeration/seeding and knew that mowing should wait a week. We so appreciate their professionalism! When I contact Mark to schedule additional work, such as shrub prunings, he gets back promptly (by the next business day) with a day his guys can do the work. I've been pleasantly surprised that he has been able to send his team over so soon after my initial call. And....I have nothing but great things to say about the way Mark's team prunes! They produce a nice shape on each shrub!! We are so grateful to have found Mark Carroll Landscaping & Stone Masonry, and we look forward to a continued relationship. Many thanks to Mark and his team for a job well done!
Description of Work: Beginning June 2014, we engaged Mark and his team to provide maintenance for our lawn. They provide weekly lawn mowing/edging services for us for $50/week and have pruned our many shrubs twice - once in June and again in September (the cost associated with the pruning was $50/man/hr). They will also be handling our fall clean-up as the time approaches.

The job went as planned (time frame), and his men were here on time every day until the job was finished. Mark took me to the stone yard to show me the different shades and textures of the slate. His men were courteous and cleaned up every day before leaving. They had a sense of humor, which goes a long way with me - as I like friendly happy people when they are working for me.
Description of Work: Mark has done masonry work for me three times. First was patio brick work, second pool decking repair, and third was my recent job repairing my front brick stairs and landing. My 35 year old brick stairs were falling apart and he suggested a better way to fix the problem with slate. I absolutely loved the new look, and he saved me some money. It changed the whole look of my front entrance bringing my house up to date!

Response from Mark Carroll Landscaping & Stone Masonry, LLC
Our company was hired to do a spring yard and shrub bed cleaning of leaves, edging and mulching of various shrub beds, in addition we power raked the entire lawn, top dressed the lawn with screened topsoil in preparation of seed, fertilizer and hay. I was paid in full for that one time service in the amount of $2658.75. I was also hired to cut or mow the lawn on a weekly basis which was a separate agreement in which I haven't been paid for as of yet. I did call this client to inform them that mowing the lawn wasn't making economic sense for me and would have to discontinue my service but only after I knew that the original work was showing strong growth. If this client called and express a need to find another contractor or additional time on my behalf I would have assisted them, they did neither. My fear is that they let the lawn get out of hand again instead of taking my courteous call and doing something about the lawn going forward. A professional would always want to make sure there service was heading in a positive direction before moving on as I did with this client. For those potential clients who may be reading this review it takes equal cooperation from both the contractor and property owner in building a quality lawn it is a lifetime of work.

It went very well. Mark is a wonderful person to deal with. We wished he had more men working and perhaps more experienced in the field of masonry but in the end, it turned out fine. My husband is a stickler for precision and of course found mistakes but the average person would not be disappointed. In the end, even my husband was happy, which is saying something for the work. Mark's workers are courteous and hard working, as is Mark. It was a pleasure to have had him work on our project. It only took about 2 weeks but the holiday weekend was in the way also.

Dealing with Mark Carroll was one of the most frustrating experiences I've ever had...and I've dealt with a lot of bad contractors over the years. In short, Mark asked me to wait nearly three months for him to do my job, and then he cancels at the last minute by sending me a text message with no explanation. Frankly, I would expect something like this from a teenager, but not a professional. Mark's incredibly rude and unprofessional approach has impacted more than just me. I spent a long time lining up other contractors to support the job, and now I'm forced to cancel on them. In retrospect, communication with Mark was difficult from the beginning. He made unrealistic demands, provided little to no notice and got irritated quickly. I don't think Mark truly understands or cares about "the customer". I would never use Mark Carroll or recommend him to anyone.
Description of Work: Mark provided a quote and was planning to do stone work at my home.

it's unfortunate for both parties when a business deal falls a part. This client finally signed off on this project on Feb 6th, 2014 6 weeks after my initial visit, being advised that this project probably wouldn't begin until spring because my crews were in our off season. but my client began to get anxious so I reminded him of our original discussion, knowing he was becoming anxious I said I would see if I could put it together sooner and I did, but now he wasn't ready, so once again we rescheduled the project for April 7th. By march 28th I requested a required deposit and he never received it. So I had no other choice but to cancel and move on.

They do masonry as well as landscape work. They repaired our chimney (pointing, replaced flues, installed chimney caps and sealed it). |They also dismantled and completely rebuilt our front steps. Work was done on time, and the place was well cleaned up after work was done. The steps are beautiful and we plan to have Mark come in the spring to re-set our front walk.

Mark came by and walked the property and gave me a verbal price which he said would include collecting / removing all the leaves trimming the shrubs and then cutting the lawn so any new leaves would "blow through" as he put it. He showed up about one hour late with a crew of four plus himself and a slight drizzle that had started and to my surprise in about 75 minutes they were done and all the leaves were gone. I was slightly agitated when he did not mow the lawn claiming it was short enough (he didn't say that when he was estimating the job). I think he didn't do it because he didn't have the equipment with him to mow and the weather had deteriorated further. He didn't knock off $40 which is the price he quoted me to mow the lawn the following season or even offer to give me the first Spring mowing free. I think Mark & his crew did a good job particularly with the cold drizzle, I would use him again however I would get a written estimate that spells out what services would be performed.

I hired Mark after getting several other bids. Mark was not the cheapest, but I selected him to do this job because our existing front porch had some difficult issues and I wanted to make sure the job was done right. The bluestone steps and stone facings turned out beautifully. All of the work was done at what I consider a high quality standard, and was done on the schedule promised. Mark was always reachable, and was good at offering suggestions on materials, etc. Would definitely hire again.

Mark arrived on time for the appointment to do the estimate. I explained what I wanted and he was able to give me an estimate on the spot. In addition to the masonry work I wanted done I also asked if he could advise me on the amount of topsoil I would need to fill several depressions in my lawn. He paced them all, told me how much I would need and then gave me an price for them. When I agreed to the job Mark gave me a date range for when the work would be done and he stayed in touch, updating me by either e-mail or phone. On the actual day the job was done he contacted me as they were finishing up. I was extremely pleased with the finished walkway and especially the new slate cap for my front stoop (even more importantly my wife was very happy with the results).
Description of Work: Replaced the front walkway, capped the front stoop, repaired cracked foundation and provided 4 loads of topsoil to fill depressions in the yard.

We have both masonry and landscaping work that needs to be done. After the first couple of calls, we set an appointment one week in advance for him to come assess the job. He never came, and did not call. After a few weeks passed, giving him the benefit of the doubt, I called back. This time, we set a date, but not a specific time. He was to call in the morning to set a time. The day came, no call, no visit, no follow up days later. So roll the dice if you want, I suppose. Perhaps you'll be granted the honor of a visit. But don't expect to be treated like, you know, a customer.

Its unfortunate that both of us couldn't make a connection after several conversations. After 40 years of being in business, I believe the one thing everyone deserves is a courtesy call if something comes up , but in this case inclement weather and bit to much phone tag play a major role in us not making a connection, Good luck with your projects moving forward

I cant say enough good things about him and his workers. Mark is a perfectionist and his workers are just like him. Their work is impeccable. They are very reliable. Mark can do any type of a job beautifully be it large or small.
Description of Work: They removed all the mulch from the front and back yard. It was a huge deal because we had used so much over the years. They pulled out all of the shrubbery against the house. They redid the island in the front of the house from a couple years ago. They landscaped the entire front of the house. After putting in all new shrubs, they laid down gravel which really added a lot. They did some masonry work in the past for us as well which was very good too.Mark went the extra mile to accommodate some specific needs I had regarding a special woven mat that was used under the gravel. He's a fair and caring person and really works with the customer!

Mark was nice enough at the start but he didn't deliver any estimate of work and I had to call him again about a week later to ask if he would come and do the spring cleanup as we had discussed. He gave me a verbal quote of $400 at that point and sent his employees to do the work. He said that would cover edging, mulching, raking up some dead crab grass, seeding and cutting the lawn. I assumed that the spring cleanup covered the entire yard, but as it turned out, he only did 3/4 of it with the mulching and edging, and said it was because the back bed had some bricks and fencing and since he suggested putting in a row of trees there, that meant that area was not included in the spring cleanup. Meanwhile, some, but not all, trees in the rest of the yard got mulch. The front row of plants near the road did not get mulch or edging. The edging on another bed in the front yard was very crooked. Mark responded by coming again but gave what were in my view nonsensical excuses for why some things got done and others didn't. The logic of the whole back area not being included in the spring cleanup was questionable. Just because he recommended a row of trees in the back didn't mean that whole area would be left untouched until I made a decision on that. (He hadn't even provided a quote for the row of trees.) He said the crooked edging was a matter of taste. He said certain trees didn't get mulch because they looked like they hadn't had mulch in the past, and that the front row by the road didn't get mulch because the plants there were going to grow in so much it wouldn't matter. He couldn't think of an excuse for why that bed wasn't edged. He agreed to edge and mulch that front row of plants, which now looks great. He agreed to fix the wildly crooked edging in one of the front beds, but first he had his employee mow the lawn and then asked me if I thought it looked better. I asked if he had re-edged it and he said no, that he was trying to "trick" me to see if I thought it looked better just because the lawn was now cut. Then I had to find my own rope and create a line to show exactly how to make the edging look good, and Mark emphasized that it's a matter of taste. He then said I owed him $400 and I went in and wrote the check, but later he came back and finished mulching, and with a written bill in his hand saying I owed $460. When I asked why it was higher he said he had forgotten to charge for the 2nd mowing and tax. Mark's work is highly regarded by other Angie's List users, so it appears that my experience is an exception. As he noted, some client relationships just don't work out.

Mark was very responsive to my initial call and coming to do an estimate. While it took a little longer than I expected to get an estimate back, Mark was very professional and had quality ideas about how to make our entryway look nice. His pricing was in line with other estimates we received. Our primary reason for not using him to do the work was due to scheduling and our need for immediate turn around. However, we would consider using him for other projects in the future.
Description of Work: Mark gave us an estimate to do masonary work outside of our basement door including building a retaining wall on either side and a bluestone path and step. He also estimated the cost to do a stone veneer on either side of the door.
