Went very well. Although the weather was not cooperative, the Fairfield Asphalt crew did whatever necessary to ensure a quality job was completed

Workers showed up and sealed driveway, leaving garbage on our lawn along the way (coffee cups, mixing stick covered in black sealant.) Less than a week later, with no driving on the driveway, the sealant started to peel. Workers had to come back and correct. Lastly, they don't accept credit cards as a form payment.

I spent a couple of months researching local paving contractors and soliciting bids before awarding my job to FAIRFIELD ASPHALT PAVING on June 23,2011. As a homeowner, this was my first driveway replacement and, for me, it was a big and expensive job. There were several facets: 1) Demolition and removal of the old driveway. 2) I was enlarging the size of the driveway/footprint; this involved removal of a tree stump in an area where additional parking spaces would be located. 3) Installation of approx 300' of Belgian block border and approx 200 Sq. ft. of Belgian block apron at the front of the driveway. 4) Driveway base preparation and paving with asphalt. Martin Keiser, owner/president, always made himself available to me and my novice questions during my research phase of the project. We probably had 20 or more conversations during this phase ---- he encouraged my questions. I NEVER THOUGHT HE WOULD MAKE HIMSELF HARD TO REACH AND RELUCTANT TO INITIATE REPAIRS WHEN PROBLEMS AROSE. 7/16/11 - Demolition work began, driveway was removed and discarded; tree stump was removed and discarded. The work on the driveway took approx 3 weeks. There was a one week delay due to extremely hot weather. I verbally told Marty to take as long as he needed to do the job the RIGHT WAY. After demolition, the border and apron were laid out and cemented into place; this took several days. Nuberto, the mason, is a true artist and did an incredibly meticulous job with the border and apron. His work was the only saving grace of the job. 8/4/11 - Driveway was now ready for paving and the paving was done this day. Final payment was given to Marty as the job was being completed. Our instructions were to not drive on the driveway for a couple of days. We did not drive or park on the driveway for 4 days. 8/15/11 - approximately two weeks after the completion - we had some heavy rain storms during this time. Water was not channeling through the weeping holes and was pooling up in a large puddle at the end of the driveway. I could see that many of the weeping holes( channels in between the belgian block border) were blocked by asphalt and inhibiting drainage. Also, and worst of all, there were compression marks or " bird baths " in the new parking area where we were parking one of our cars. There were approximately two dozen tire compression marks in this area. I WILL SUMMARIZE WHAT HAPPEN FROM THIS POINT TO NOW: 8/16/11 - started calling Martin Keiser, owner/president, and detailed the problems on his voice mail, both cell and office phones. 8/25/11 - Marty called back and said he'd been to my driveway and said he saw nothing wrong. We discussed the issues and he said he would call me back and we'd get together and go over the problem. 9/14/11 - more that 2 weeks had gone by and no calls from Marty - I called his numbers again. 9/19/11 - Marty called back - I listened to him complain about the weather and his work load. He said he'd be out as soon as he could. 10/18/11 - Frustrated - I wrote a letter to Fairfield Asphalt Paving detailing my driveway problems and dissatisfaction with the job and suggested legal action. 10/19/11 - Delivered the letter to Marty's house and handed it to his wife. 10/20/11 - Two of Marty's crew came out and cleared the weeping holes of excess asphalt; this resolved the drainage problem. I was instructed to paint some small stones a bright color and place them into the compression marks and photo them so they could see the problem. i did that the next day. ----- From October 20th November 8 th my calls to Marty went unreturned. 11/8/12 - while driving near my house, I saw the Fairfield Asphalt trucks at a job site, so I stopped by and saw Martin Keiser there and confronted him about my driveway and the problems with the compression marks. He left the job and met me at my house, approx 1 mile away, and we went over the problems. He agreed to cut out and repave the area which had the compression marks; approx 200 SQ.FT. Because it was late in the paving season, we agreed he would do the job in the spring of 2012. I requested he send me our agreement in writing and that I would document our conversation and send it to him in writing as well. 12/18/11 - I saw Marty locally this day and reminded him that I had not received the documentation of our agreement. 1/28/12 - I wrote a letter requesting the documentation and personally delivered it to Marty at his house this day. 1/31/12 - I received Fairfield Asphalts document detailing the work to be done dated 1/3/12. Summary the rest of 2012 Called Marty 7/30/12-- It took a week for him to return my call. Whatever plan we made to meet and discuss the job - he never followed through If he said he'd call me tomorrow - he never would. This happened several times. 10/01/12 - Marty showed up at my house - unannounced and without return phone calls. Said he was thinking about me and my driveway. Said he was doing a job down the street. We discussed the repairs - I had issues with the large seam Marty said would result as a part of the repair. Told him I would discuss it with my wife and call him back with a plan of action. 10/2/12 - Called Marty back the next day and said we'd made a decision - 10/1/12 - That was the last time I saw or heard from Martin Keiser, owner/president of Fairfield Asphalt Paving. SINCE A MAN IS ONLY AS GOOD AS HIS WORD - DRAW YOUR OWN CONCLUSIONS. In summary, it is not like the problems with the driveway occurred months after completion, they happened a week after the driveway was done. The follow up and brazen disregard for the customer still to this day confounds me! Once the check was in Marty's hand - my problems with the driveway were MY PROBLEMS and I think the detail of my experience with Martin Keiser and FAIRFIELD ASPHALT PAVING are adequately made. I was satisfied with the crew, especially the masonry, and feel their work was above average. The owner was on the job site only to measure and pick up checks - at no time did he perform physical work on my driveway; he is a salesman. I ONLY WISH SOMEONE HAD STEPPED FORWARD AND TOLD THEIR HORROR STORY AND DISPLAYED IT FOR ME TO SEE PRIOR TO MY HIRING THIS LESS THAN REPUTABLE INDIVIDUAL.

Response from Fairfield Asphalt Paving
To whom it may concern, We are surprised by this complaint! The time line the customer described is completely false. The first call was a few weeks after the job had been finished. I responded over the phone. Water was building up against the block so I said I would wait until it rained so we could make weep holes between the block in the appropriate place. When it rained I sent two men to fix this problem. Then a few weeks later he called and said there were indentations in one area. I responded to this and set up a time to meet. When we had a mutual agreed upon time it was a week or so later. When I was there I couldn’t see the indentations—the customer said that they were only visible when it rains. These little areas are so shallow that only a film of water appears. My suggestion to him was to cut this area out have repave this area, but there would be two seams. I told him this was better done in warmer weather. We were in September at this point so we agree to wait until next year, meaning 2012. When I called him the first time he didn’t seem to like the idea. He said he was going to talk to his wife and get back to me. He didn’t call for a while so I called and got his answering machine. I left a message. He called me a couple of weeks later and said that he was away. When he got back he was having his house painted and wanted to wait. The last time I talked to him I told him that sealing the driveway would fill these shallow spots, therefore no seams. He said he was talking to a sealing company anyway so he would let me know. I never heard from him so I thought he had it sealed. After I had finished paving his driveway I told him that it was the heat of July meaning there could be depressions if you park in a spot too long. I also gave him a pamphlet that said this could happen. I reminded him of this and he admitted that a relative had a large, heavy car and parked there. This customer met with me 20 times over two years just to make up his mind. I don’t know what you call this kind of person. He can to jobs I was doing to watch the process. His next door neighbor is satisfied enough to have recommended me to another neighbor. I have to admit I was a little apprehensive to do his job. I should have going with my instincts! Thank you, M J Keiser Fairfield Asphalt Paving P.S. Small indentations are common in the heat of the summer. At this point I wouldn’t set foot on his property. If he had asked us to seal his driveway we would have given him a reasonable quote to do so! This is all it really needed in my 35 years of professional experience. We have no other complaints—that must tell you something!

It went well and the experience was good. They were prompt and provided an estimate very quickly. They were not the least expensive and not the most expensive either. They were right in the middle. They explained what they were going to do and why their method was different from the method of the least expensive person, and better. They did the work and did it well, and we haven't had a problem with the work that they did. They were recommended to us by a friend, and our neighbor used them as a result of our using them.
Description of Work: Fairfield Asphalt Paving did the paving of our driveway. We had a gravel driveway and they paved the driveway. They set some Belgian block that we had lining the driveway and they put a drain in front of our garage.
