I wanted to install a Victorian-inspired garden pathway around the perimeter of my house with corresponding garden beds following the path, and he did an impeccable job (in record time!). He has a real sense and eye for design and offers much more than simple installation. He takes his work seriously and conducts himself with pride, which is reflected in his portfolio. Brennan understood what I was trying to accomplish and went above and beyond with the logistics, grading the land, rebuilding what needed to be touched up, installing the proper drainage, and even adding raised garden beds for the perfect Victorian kitchen garden. I received several quotes and Northwind was incredibly fair, and his team were the only ones who seemed to really grasp my vision. They took care of details to cover the disturbed soil with seeds and straws after finishing the paving. They also buried drain pipes for our gutter down sprouts to be redirected underneath the patio. Luis kept track of our project well, and his team and he are very understanding and easy to communicate in person. It would be better to schedule in-person discussions with Luis than texting/phone since he is involved in multiple projects and quite busy."

Topsoil should go down first. If the topsoil is next to your house, make sure the grade slopes away from the house to keep water from pooling against your foundation and possibly leaking into your basement or crawl space. Don’t cover your decorative landscape mulch with topsoil as that defeats the purpose of laying down the mulch. If you’re trying to create a certain soil composition to improve plant growth, you’ll likely want compost mixed into the topsoil instead of mulch. No, mulch itself does not necessarily attract termites even though it’s usually made of shredded wood. Some types of mulch like cedar or cypress resist termites because they’re toxic or unappetizing to the wood munchers. However, when the mulch is deep enough, say three inches or more, it creates a perfect habitat for insects of all kinds to build nests.
Although it’s not required to lay anything under mulch, it can help to put landscape fabric or plastic weed barrier down and lay mulch on top. The barrier helps keep weeds from growing up through your mulch. It also helps keep rodents and insects from burrowing into the ground underneath.
