Ted arrived on time and tested our water. He reviewed the plumbing situation and spent extra time trying to evaluate the best way to provide softened water to the house and untreated water to our outside faucets. His quote was reasonable and included a generous discount for Angie's list members. The day of installation (Ted was available within 1 week, we were not so he scheduled installation for our next available day!) was easy as pie! Ted arrived right on time and put drop cloths down everywhere he walked, cleaned up after himself, kept the disruption to our water supply at a minimum and was very organized and professional with the installation. His equipment is top notch and he took time to explain how the softener, RO systems work as well as how he plumbed in all the equipment. We are EXTREMELY happy with the softening system and love the RO water, it has really improved the taste of our water! I would highly recommend Ted to anyone looking for an improvement in their home water system. He was an absolute pleasure to work with!
Description of Work: Ted's work was professional, on time, detailed and reasonably priced.

We had just purchased a home that had a water softener in the basement, but had not actually been used for some time as indicated by the water analysis we had done as part of our home inspection. The water was extremely hard evidence of which was all over the plumbing fixtures where mineral deposits had been left to build up over time. The home was never vacant and yet I cannot understand how anyone can take a shower using a showerhead that just drips water. The showerhead was so encrusted with mineral deposits that water could no longer get through the sprayer ? it was so gross. Instead of the stainless steel look, the showerhead was green and chalky white. When you consider how little it really does cost to run a water softener with minimal maintenance, it?s just an irresponsible and/or lazy homeowner that doesn?t maintain their water quality especially when dealing with such hard water. The damage that can be done to pipes over time from mineral deposits and pH imbalance is significant and we have had to change several plumbing fixtures already. I didn?t know anything about the particular water softener in the basement or if it even worked. I called Ted Mullen, the Clean Water Man, and he came over and did a water test and inspected the softener and got us back in the business. He educated me on the softener itself and said it?s actually one of the best and most efficient softeners available. It?s a real shame it sat for so long when it could have been helping to keep the pipes and fixtures clean. The water softener is doing a great job. After he got our softener up and running, the very next day we purchased a new showerhead which not only looks great, but now puts out plenty of water and good pressure. Ted Mullen knows water and he knows water softeners. He is very knowledgeable and I recommend him highly.

I thought Ted was a very honest and fair person. When he couldn't come at the appointed which was 9:30 am because of a mechanical issue with his truck he called me three times times to keep me undated and wound up coming just a half hour late. It was a pleasure dealing with a person like this professional and competent.

The quality of his work was excellent. He was very clear; he explained everything carefully to me. He was very fair and he gave me an Angie’s List discount. We had originally scheduled an appointment but my power went out during a snowstorm. He couldn’t come out because I had no water. We rescheduled with no problem and he came out a couple weeks later. He and his son put in the machine. They came late in the afternoon and they stayed until 7:00 to finish it. He explained everything to me and he seemed to do a good job. I need to call him to have it recharged.
Description of Work: I used Clean Water Man a year ago. He put in an acid neutralizer. It is a tank in addition to our water softener.

Professional, efficient, honest, truth worthy...these are some of the words that come to mind when I think of Clean Water Man. In an industry were companies often take advantage of customer's sense of desperation, Ted responded the same day and offered to come immediately. Without knowing any better, i asked him to quote me a piece of equipment, which he could've done and just called it a day. But rather than just taking my money, he opted to do the right thing by fixing the old filter and then giving me the great news that i did NOT need a new one.You just don't see that these days and for that he will have my loyalty. When my filters do end up going (which they will), i will know where and who to call. BTW, he also showed me how to work the old piece of equipment and how to clear my kitchen faucets. I recommend Clean Water Man blindly...
Description of Work: I called Ted to stop by my home's filtration system, and provide me witha quote. The previous (incumbent) company, Hungerford's, which had provided and serviced the filters to that point, had told me I needed new filters and quoted me over $5,000 to replace them. Ted came and took a look at them and instead of quoting me any filter, he actually looked at, cleaned it and repaired it. He revived a piece of equipment that two previous companies (a pump company, and a plumber) had told me no longer was working.

I called Clean Water Man because the well water running in my home was turbid at times, and stained my toilet, bath tub and sink, etc with a red-brown residue. On his initial visit, Ted tested my water for iron content and other minerals. He took the time to explain the results of each test and offered several mitigation strategies. He also examined my well water pressure tank and concluded that it needed to be replaced; the tank was installed in the 80s and while it was not leaking water, it appeared that the tank was no longer maintaining pressure effectively. After discussing the various fixes, and based on Ted's recommendations, I decided to install a sediment filter, new well water pressure tank and a water softener. I also asked Ted to install by-pass valves for the piping leading to the faucets outside the house, as I don't want to water my lawn and garden with softened water; Ted also suggested replacing a couple of valves on the existing plumbing because the plastic fittings were cracked. We scheduled a date for the work to be done, and as scheduled, Ted arrive on time (!) to perform work. I could not stay at home while Ted completed the work; however, I had no reservations about having Ted work in my home, alone. When I returned, Ted was finishing up. He then gave me a run-through of the worked that he had performed and the equipment that he installed; all was as we had agreed. At that time, I asked Ted if he could submit a water sample to commercial laboratory for an analysis of the water quality - this he did on his follow up visit which we scheduled for two weeks after the service visit. Ted is a great professional and a trustworthy person. I highly recommend Ted to anyone who has a problem compatible to his area of expertise

I just purchased a house and the first order of business was to clean up our well water. Ted was great with everything - he did some of his own tests of the water and explained everything along the way. We didn't need a water softener as previously thought, but the pH was high and there was some bacteria. He installed a UV system to treat the water, a reverse osmosis system, and a system to manage the pH and metal content. He explained everything along the way. My wife and I are both very happy with the work done and will definitely use Ted in the future!

We contacted Ted based upon the reviews here on Angies List. A few days later, on a Saturday, Ted came to our house and provided an estimate in addition to testing our water. Prior to performing any work he suggested we try a few things on our existing system to see if the the sulphur smell would go away, no strings attached. After a few weeks, the sulpur smell did not go away and we called Ted to install the aeration system. Ted installed the system and provided training for changing the air pump settings. Unfortunately, a leak developed from a fitting on the new aeration tank. Ted came out within a few days a corrected the leak. We are rotten egg smelling water free all thanks to Ted. Ted Mullen, the Cean Water Man was honest, fair and knowledgeable. He stands by his products and craftmanship. My only regret is that we hadn't used Ted to service our water treatment system since we moved to Madison.

I called a number of different contractors, ranging from a general purpose plumber to a water softener specialist to a pump & well service, to advise me on the "right" solution to my problem. The water softener specialist took a quick water sample and proposed the Mercedes of water softeners (at $3500+) without really assessing the existing water softener or pressure tank. The general purpose plumber, who we had used with great success in the past, didn't seem particularly well equipped or overly interested to deal with the water softener. The big well & pump service didn't even come to the house. They sized up the problem over the phone and sent me a proposal via email for around $3700 to replace the water softener and pressure tank. After doing some more investigation on Angies list, I decided to call Clean Water Man. Ted spent about 15 minutes with me on the phone to better understand the problem and schedule an appointment. He showed up right on time and immediately tested the water. He said the water was soft and asked to see the softener and pressure tank. He explained to me how the softener works, asked a lot of questions about how the unit was performing (recycle times, sounds it made, etc), told me what the likely problem was, and what options were available for fixing or replacing the softener. He said the unit we had was a very good unit and he had the knowledge and parts to try to fix it if we wanted to go that route. But at 25+ years old, I figured it was time to replace. Ted gave me a written proposal, walked me through what units he was proposing to use and why he felt these were a good, cost effective solution. His proposal was $1000 below the other proposals and I felt much more comfortable that he really knew his business and we could trust his workmanship. After Ted explained what was entailed in replacing the units, we agreed on an installation date. He didn't ask for a deposit and only asked that I let him know before the installation date if I changed my mind. He showed up to do the installation 10 minutes early, finished the work in 1 hour less than estimated, and showed me how to change the filter, reprogram the softener if necessary, etc. The quality of the installation was excellent...neat, accessible, easy to service & change filters, etc. The unit works great and the overall experience was great! Ted was a true professional! I only wish all the contractors could perform and treat their customers like Ted!
Description of Work: I replaced a 25 year old water softener and well pump pressure tank, that were starting to give me trouble, as well as added an outside hose bib.

I called Clean Water Man, Inc after reading the reviews here. I had a problem with a leaking water softener system. The owner arrived punctually and was very professional and courteous. He explained the problem and spent considerable time fixing my current (20 year old) system. It would probably have been easier to just say "Replace the whole system." But his "Let's see if we can fix it," approach helped me not to spend more than I currently needed; this was much appreciated. I will be calling him when I do need a new system. Overall highly recommended.

I bought my home 3 years ago and did not know much about wells and water softeners. Over the 3 years I fed it salt, but the water quality never was great. It was time to get serious about the problem. I selected Ted because he was independent and not a part of a larger water conditiong service. He was highly rated by Angie's List. He drove 1 hour, worked 1 hour and drove back 1 hour. He tested my system and made recommendations. He refused to take any money. He said to let him know in 2 weeks how the system is doing with his recommendations. He told me that I may require a pre-filter ($300 - $400) or worse case scenario and new system for $1,500. Ted is extremely trustworthy and is motivated to do the right thing. Whatever the outcome from his recommendations I will retain his service to see thy are implementd

They responded quickly, as I needed the work to be done asap for a house closing. They followed through, showed up quickly, did the work, called to be sure things were progressing as expected. The well was cleaned, the re-testing passed just fine. These guys did everything for one very good price and were patient and kind (even though I am frantic with getting things done fast for the closing of my home sale!)

Our sump pump, which was operating successfully for 10 years since we bought the home, failed in the running mode (was running continuously) during an evening rain storm. The worry was that it would burn itself out and our basement would flood, so I unplugged the pump and turned it on manually for a minute or so every two hours throughout the night to empty the sump well. After leaving a message on Tuesday night, they returned my call at 08:30 the next morning. They committed to do the job the same day, even if it meant working into the evening. They answered all my questions about the type of the replacement pump, including calling me directly from their parts distributor to give me the exact model number of the pump I would get. After a mid-afternoon checkpoint callback, they arrived at about 17:30 and completed the job by about 19:00, including installation of a battery operated failure alarm which sounds if the water level in the well ever goes a few inches above the trip level of the installed pump, say during a power failure. They installed a high quality Zoeller pump, correctly sized for the application, and I'm very happy with the quality of the work performed and their professional approach during the contact and execution phases of the job. They even called me back the next day to make sure I didn't have any remaining questions or issues. 100% top notch.
Description of Work: Replaced a submersible sump pump the same day.
