We found Alan Voss of AV Designs based on a recommendation after a very bad experience with an IKEA designer/installer. The original designer/installer was far too vague on what would be performed and how much it would cost. Some friends of ours had used Alan to install their own IKEA kitchen and were very pleased with the results. Alan normally does custom cabinetwork but has also done a number of IKEA kitchens and is very familiar with IKEA installations. We gave him a call and quickly heard back from him. He stopped by and gave us an accurate and thorough quote. He started work a few days later and we were immediately very happy with our decision to go with Alan. Our somewhat large kitchen was assembled and installed in just a few days. We had considered doing the job ourselves but we are so glad we decided to have Alan do it. We could not have achieved the results that Alan did. It would have taken me many weeks minimum and most likely months and it would not have turned out so well. One of Alans strengths is due his custom cabinetwork work. We had several areas that needed precise trim and measurements and these were handled with ease and look completely professional. All of the work was done in a professional and timely manner. Alan and his team are friendly and responsive. We never had any troubles whatsoever. In addition, we used Alan to finish up some of the other projects for the kitchen such as installing a vent hood and vents to the outside of our home. These jobs were also done perfectly and in a timely manner. In short, we are very pleased with our kitchen and Alan's work. We highly recommend him. If you are doing an IKEA kitchen, you could do it yourself but consider the time it would take and how it may come out. There are far more details to consider such as precise trim and the IKEA material suggests it is far easier than it actually is. We thought Alan's price was exceptionally reasonable. In fact it was less than we expected. If you are considering a custom kitchen, we would also strongly recommend Alan. We have no doubt that his quality and workmanship would be the same for that scenario based on the custom work he did to finish off our kitchen. We're completely satisfied and highly recommend Alan and A V Designs. Tom and Ingrid Walsh

We had gotten a design and quote on Diamond cabinets from Home Depot and were about to make a deposit when we met Alan and Dan through a general contractor. We hadn't even thought about custom cabinets, since we were only doing a mid-range kitchen remodel, but Alan worked with us to give us all the quality, aesthetics and accessories we cared about (e.g. fancy drawer slides, pantry pull-outs, cherry veneers), while skipping the standard upgrades we didn't care about (e.g. all-plywood boxes - though Alan used stronger boxes on the drawers that needed them). The final price was about 25% more than we would have paid with the Home Depot promotion, but that's not a fair comparison since the outcome, schedule, and process were far superior. We thought we knew what we wanted design-wise, but Alan went through at least 3 revisions with us, and (fortunately for us) I think we took his advice every time. We gave him a sample of a wood stain we liked, and again, he came back about 3 times to get the color to the perfect shade - which was even nicer than the sample we had started with. The layout of our new kitchen is more open than before, while simultaneously offering more usable space. There was an issue with support beams in one part of the ceiling and one part of the wall, and the contractor wasn't sure what dimensions these would be until the walls actually came down. Alan worked with the contractor so that the cabinets in question were built last, and he solved the problem creatively by building a sort-of false back in one of the cabinets to hide the support beam. During the design consultations, we chose about $2,000 of upgrades, and I never felt like Alan was trying to upsell us - in fact, he sometimes recommended against the upgrades we suggested to him. And he gave us revised estimates when we made changes, so we always knew what to expect. Bottom line, our kitchen is gorgeous and ergonomically designed, Alan and Dan were a pleasure to work with, and we'd recommend A V Designs to anyone.
Description of Work: Alan & his team designed our kitchen layout and custom-built all the cabinets, including an additional (very large) built-in bar cabinet in the dining room. We were building a medium-sized, modern kitchen in an old house, breaking through a wall and replacing pretty much everything down to the studs.
