We went to a small business expecting that if there were problems, they would stand behind their work. We had the owner come out and measure everything so we could be sure the new stove was the right choice and would fit. In retrospect, he was probably too eager to make the sale. The installation process was so disorganized, it's not worth going into details. Bottom line, the installers were repeatedly late, failed to show for one appointment entirely, and had to come back to finish the job because they didn't have the right materials. The stove did not run as advertised, and after much back and forth, and after we noticed that the installation manual left behind by the installers specified that our chimney should have been at least 8 feet taller than it is, they installed a chimney extending pipe temporarily. This helped, but in the end, they also gave us remedial training in starting and running the stove appropriately, because no we are not wood stove experts! It was then running perfectly, as advertised. They then removed the extender because they were not allowed to leave it up and said everything should be fine. The stove's performance decreased significantly and they became even harder than before to get ahold of and to get a straight answer from. The owner and his lead sales guy came out to look and started off condescending and annoyed. They gave multiple reasons (excuses) for why the stove isn't running the way it was with the extender. As we pointed out the logical flaws in each excuse, they fell back on "well no, it's running perfectly, running as intended" and acted like we were crazy. We felt that since they were responsible for installation and failed to say a single word about the height of the chimney or any other risks with installation, they should make it right. They acted as if we had started a giant scheme to try to get something for free. Of course, we can't get our old stove back now and we can't get our money back and they don't care that they installed the stove without following the manufacturer's instructions. They didn't even offer any kind of compromise even though they own a masonry business and could have offered to do the repairs for materials cost only. They just dismissed us and kept trying to tell us we were crazy. Best of all, they offered to reinstall the pipe extender that they earlier said they had to remove for safety reasons. Finally, they finished their visit by telling us that (a) we were lucky that we went with them since no other stove company would have tried to fix it at all and (b) that if they stayed overnight, there would be hot embers in the morning. Needless to say, we will not be doing business with them again and we will be looking to hire a reputable mason to make the necessary repairs to the chimney.
Description of Work: Came out and measured for fit of new stove and to recommend best installation. Removed existing stove, installed new chimney liner, and installed new wood stove.

Response from VALLEY FIREPLACE & STOVE LLC
I , Mark Kozikowski, Owner of Valley Fireplace & went to the customer’s house to do a FREE consultation as requested to see if the stove the customer was interested in purchasing would work. After inspection, I confirmed that the chimney had an existing stove hooked up to it and there were no draft issues. (Incidentally, I was not there just to make a sale. That is NOT our way of doing business. ) From my observation, a new stove would work. (This is the installer’s take on things) With regards to the installation, we were hung up on a previous job so we called them. They were very understanding and even made jokes. The second day we worked until 8pm at night to install the stove and also installed a free liner which would normally cost $1075. They were very appreciative and even made them homemade cookies. Then they went back for a third time because the glass was getting dirty so we brought our own wood and got it burning which it burned great. They had read in the manual that the flue might not be high enough so the installers decided to try a temp extension. When we went back to remove the extension they said they saw no difference and after our salesman showed them how to burn wood property they have had no problems and they loved the stove and it kept the downstairs at 80 and the upstairs at 70 degrees. They even said we should make a video on how to burn wood and run a stove. Also, as to the accusation that we failed to install the stove according to the manufacturer’s instructions, this is false. The building inspector inspected the installation and found it to be approved as installed so that accusation has no basis. Otherwise the inspector would have made us correct it. Regarding the accusation that the stove did not burn as advertised, (they felt they were not getting proper drafting) the manual states a “recommended chimney height” not a “mandatory or required” height. In my professional experience, chimneys operate as different as people. The manuals are a basis to start but each situation is unique and as long as we meet the safety requirements which we have been certified and trained, and licensed and insured, we perform our installations within those guidelines and parameters. We’ve experienced many chimneys that were even shorter than theirs and the stoves ran perfectly. Each situation is unique in itself so that’s why the manufacturer doesn’t state a mandatory or required height. The customer felt that due to their chimney height (11ft) being shorter that they were not getting a proper draft. In any event, we were contacted regarding this issue. We scheduled our installers to make a service call. Unfortunately, the first appointment had to be cancelled due to the installers being held up on another job earlier in the day. Therefore, another appointment was made after apologizing. After a significant investigation by the installers, it was confirmed that the installation was correct, the stove was not broken or defective and that it runs properly. Since the customers were still not convinced, the installers put on a temporary 6’ extension to test to see if the stove would perform better. The extension was left there about a week. The customer called and said it didn’t get better with regards the draft. Therefore, I scheduled one of our sales people to go out to see if he could find out what the problem was. Ron, our sales went to the customer’s home and brought a bundle of seasoned hardwood and some fire starters (sometimes customers don’t use proper materials for burning). Consequently, one of the complaints was that the stove did not get very hot. Ron brought a new package stove thermometer and took a reading before adding new wood. (It read 250 degrees). He then added 3 pieces of wood and opened the damper control. After several minutes, the fire was burning rapidly and exactly as he expected it to. After approx.. 30 minutes he took another temperature reading which was not 60 degrees. At this point he spent some time with the customer explaining the proper operation of this new stove. They watched it burn at low, medium and high rates for at least 1.5-2 hrs. He even went out and checked out his wood supply. It appeared ok but some pieces seemed extremely hard which could indicate old wood. At this point he explained that based on the evidence, the stove was running exactly as designed and not in any way defective. He then advised them that he would schedule the extension to be removed because it did not seem to be making a big difference and the customer would call back to report any difference. Shortly thereafter, the customer called back and reported that he was not happy with the way the stove was operating. A return visit was promptly scheduled with Ron and myself. We were informed that the stove was off and cold so we brought another bundle of kindling and some fire starters. With the customer observing they started the fire from scratch without any issues. After approx.. 10 minutes the fire was going good and several more pieces were added. Over the course of 2.5 hrs. we ran the stove at a low, medium and high rate and again the stove performed exactly as designed and again it reached a temp of 600 degrees. No issues were observed. The biggest complaint is that there are no hot coals left after 8 hours so they have to restart the fire. It is my opinion that this is due to the wood they are using which we have no control over. It is my professional opinion that extending the chimney wouldn’t make a difference and it would actually make the wood burn quicker. But based on the manufacturer’s claims, this stove they purchased operated exactly as it was designed and claims. With regards to how we conducted business with them, we can assure you we were friendly, courteous and as professional as always. And that attitude was maintained at all times. We pride ourselves on our employees. We get humorous letters and calls with glowing recommendations. We also pride ourselves in following through on any and all issues. For them to say we “just dismissed us” is proven false in the fact that we continued to return over and over and stayed for hours until we could show them how to start and run their stove. Sometimes people just don’t know how to properly do this, which is understandable and we were happy to show them. The reason I personally didn’t handle this issue from the beginning is because I was out of the country on volunteer work. However, my staff is capable and professional in handling anything in my absence. We also found it difficult and frustration that when we spoke to the husband he kept referring us to the wife and vice versa. We were trying to establish who had the issues but it was very confusing. On the last visit, the wife insisted we talk to the husband so we made the appointment with him but toward the end of the visit the wife came home so we were able to show them both how to operate the stove successfully and properly. Also, we certainly were punctual, organized and had much concern for the satisfaction of the customer. As a matter of fact, that is one of the many compliments we get as compared to our competitors. Consequently, if this customer still feels a chimney extension would rectify their situation (which we disagree it would) we would definitely contact our mason and arrange to extend their chimney at cost to them. We anticipate that cost to be $800 or so and again at their cost. We hope that this information satisfies your request for an inquiry into this customer’s complaint. We stand by our decision in how we handled this sale and it’s subsequent issues and regret their view of our company. Perhaps they misinterpreted our attitude and we hope we didn’t in any way offend them. We never intended to make them feel insulted or “crazy”. If just was a little frustrating to repeatedly explain and show them how to operate the stove correctly but we were willing to do it until they were satisfied and after the last visit, we thought that had been accomplished. We exhausted all possible means to satisfy them in our professional opinion.
