We definitely recommend Keith and think a lot of him as a professional painter and businessman. He is a great person to work with, too. We will call him this spring for outside painting!!
I contacted Kieth based on favorable Angie's List reviews and was impressed in initial phone conversations. I became fully confident in his skill and integrity during the first week . Over three plus months he worked 4 to 5 days most week and I drove up for 3 or 4 days. Probably three quarters of what was accomplished was his doing. He is skillful and productive and has a good sense of design.
Any problems that arose were promptly and fully resolved. We are very happy with our refinished floors after negotiating an extra coat for one room. There were occasional interruptions or delays due to home responsibilities (His wife was in school and they have two young boys). I'm sure I contributed more disruptions myself.
In sum, I very, very highly recommend Kieth Rawcliffe and Newcastle Painting.
As an aside, poor Keith arrived for his first day of work on the morning that we had to put down our beloved 15 year-old Labrador retriever. We were wrecks, crying all the way to the vet' and back at home. He was so kind and sympathetic - it was very sweet. We have already recommended him to several friends.
Keith, owner and prime craftsman at Newcastle Painting, had just completed painting a large bedroom in our house. One of the doors in question was the entry door to that bedroom. I asked him what could be done to refinish the door, or maybe something else I could do that would make the door look really nice again. Keith examined the door for a few seconds and proceeded to tell me exactly what to do to restore the doors, including the names of the products to use (which are readily available and are not particularly expensive). He also explained the rubbing techniques to use.
In my more adventuresome days I would have tackled the job myself, because Keith had just handed me precise instructions about how to do it. But I didn't want to take a chance on messing up with the technique, so asked if he would be willing to do it; he was.
The results are fantastic. My wife is extremely pleased with the outcome, too.
Keith, who owns and is the craftsman behind Newcastle Painting, is very experienced, careful and meticulous. He did an excellent job. He knows the characteristics of various high-quality paints and materials, and he suggests and selects the best for the circumstances involved, although he seems willing to go with whatever the customer wants that is reasonable.
One nice thing about using Keith for a job (he also had painted our house exterior a few years back - great job there, too) is that he not only is he an excellent and skilled painter, but he also does other work that might be necessary in connection with a job. In this case that meant Sheetrock work and some carpentry. I've discovered that when Keith says he can do something, then he can, and well, too.
In this case, Keith did all the work himself - no helper or crew. He is the guy who sees customers and generates quotes for Newcastle Painting; but he is not a desk jockey or salesman. We know that when we talk with Keith we are not only talking with the owner, but also the guy who is going to be on-site doing the work. That really cuts down on the possibility for miscommunication and helps make for a smooth job and excellent results.
Although this has nothing to do with the quality of his work, it is a definite plus that Keith is, simply put, a very decent and nice guy, a pleasure to have around.
From beginning to end, Keith and his 2-man crew acted professionally ? courteous, friendly, impeccable attention to detail, they cleaned up after themselves every day, took great pride in their work, and they seemed to love what they do. If I wanted something changed a little, their response was always sincerely positive and without hesitation (too bad not all contractors have such a great attitude). The mid-October weather was uncooperative, with lots of rainy days. But the crew never attempted to rush the job; instead waiting, as needed, for things to dry out before proceeding. During the spells of rainy days, Keith contacted me several times to assure me they intended to finish the job when the time was right.
Upon job completion, I did a detailed walk-around with Keith. I found nothing wrong. In my mind, they?d done a perfect job. I would absolutely recommend Newcastle Painting to anyone.
In stark contrast, Keith from Newcastle looked over my house and provided me with a calm, rational assessment and not once did he shy away from the fact that some work had to be done. Heck, he painted houses that were in far worse condition and looked at my house like it was no problem.. He was also gladly willing to replace and repair where necessary. As for the work, my wife and I couldn?t be happier. Keith and his partner went above and beyond, even providing 4 coats in some areas that are heavily exposed to the sun. Our house which was built in 1986 looks like it?s almost new. We have cedar clapboard and I don?t think I would ever consider vinyl siding after how it looks now. I often find myself staring at my ?new? house in compete admiration. Thanks again Newcastle!!!
The paint on the walls was overall quite good. There were a few rooms where the prep work had not been done well (sanding), but Keith redid entire walls and/or rooms that were not up to his standards. I did have to go through the house near the end to be sure that all drips and splatters were addressed, but when I pointed things out he fixed them. I would have preferred that he and his crew had taken care to make everything perfect (i.e. correct dark brown paint splatters on our white trim) themselves, but it wasn't a big deal that I had to intervene. It's been 9 months since he painted, and the interior paint still looks really good. There are a few areas that I now realize were missed - the inside of our bathroom door was never painted, the bathroom radiator was never painted, there's a splatter on our stairway ceiling, etc. - but all of these are relatively minor considering that he painted every surface of our house, most of it done perfectly.
The exterior painting is beautiful. The project was delayed by about a week due to rain. Keith had some challenges since our cedar siding is old and not in great shape. He did what he could to sand and make it look better, then applied several coats of Benjamin Moore Aura paint - which is shiny and long-lasting and really looks outstanding (better than all of our neighbors' homes that were also painted last year). His assistant painted portions of our home the wrong color at several points, but Keith corrected the mistakes immediately and the finished product is very good. Is it perfect? No. There are a few small things I would correct. But it's very, very good.
The one negative I would point out is that by the end of the job, I got the feeling that Keith and his assistant were in a hurry to finish up our job. In their defense, they dedicated probably 3 full weeks to our home (at a $15,000 price tag!) and we kept adding new things to the job (e.g. smoothing ceilings, painting all of our kitchen cabinets, painting our fence, etc.). - so they were probably ready to move on. On the last day, I was home and things were so hurried that I literally had to walk around the house pointing out and reminding them about the things I wanted done before they left (remove hardware, paint over the marks leftover from previous door numbers, etc.). They did it, but I didn't like having to keep reminding them and feeling so rushed.
All that said, I would recommend Keith without reservation. He's a very kind person, honest, hard-working, thorough, detail-oriented, uses high quality paints, etc. His assistants could use more training and I wish I could clone Keith, because the work that he did himself was outstanding.
There wasn?t anything that I disliked. They did a very professional job. They were meticulous in their work and I thought that it was a reasonable quote. The work was done in the timeframe that they told me it was going to be done. I was very pleased with them and I have contacted them to do some additional work because of how well they did. They kept us informed all the time of what they were going to do.
