Contacted owner by phone, who came out, measured the area and spoke to us in length about the job. He mailed us a proposal which we thought was in the ballpark with the other estimates we had received. He offered to do a "mockup" of the stairs at his location, which we went to see. The materials used were not the exact materials we discussed so, it was hard to see exactly what we were going to get, but we had the idea. When asked about references, the owner took us to some job sites to actually see some of the work. After much discussion and amp; numerous phone calls-we signed the proposal for the go ahead. The owner and amp; workers showed up one day to begin work. (No actual date was given, no phone call prior to coming) They did a great job getting the old stair out, and removed the new siding. They were back the next day and amp; put in a long day. Unfortunately, due to the type of stone and no communication on their part-the job was not done to our satisfaction. I had to call the owner that evening to advise the pattern I asked for was not being done,( they had not permanently sealed the work yet), so we figured we could "catch" any issues. We ended up with a pattern on the top stair we did not want, but accepted it as not a big deal. The remainder of the pattern was done as requested. There were fairly large gaps against the house when the work was done, one of the stones in the front was so concave it looked chipped. There were areas that the sand was not filled in, and the ends of the stone on both sides on the lower step were not matched to the top step. (basically the "finished" edge was not there). When we advised the owner, he came to look at the work, advised nothing could be done-after much discussion-he promised he would fix it to our satisfaction. We did not discuss filling out a additional work order or that any additional charges would be incurred. We had some issues with how the job site was left and amp; that the stone work was cut on our lawn instead of the road or driveway, which we felt we had the right to discuss. He arrived next day with a worker to fix the problems. We were happy with the results. Unfortunately, a few days later we received a bill for additional work. When we called to find out why, he advised he was charging for additional labor for time spent for his employee, but not charging us for his time. After trying to discuss this on the phone with him-he became agitated, stated he would come back to "seal" the pavers, stated just pay the proposal amount, he has had enough, he's "done" with us. He can't please us. So..we paid him the agreed amount, and advised not to bother to come back at all. Apparently, we were JUST TOO DIFFICULT for him. It is too bad he felt we were being difficult, but we were paying for something we were not getting and we advised as such. We would have had more work for him even with the issues as we thought he had gone above and beyond to try to get the job done right. I guess Patience is a virtue, but he ran out of it, and so did we.
Description of Work: Removed old concrete stairs/steps and replaced with new Unilock material. Took off new siding to do work for stairs and replacedwhen done, started partial walkway/landing with pavers as well.

Response from WOJTUSIK'S NURSERY & GARDEN
As owner/operated of this family business since my Dad started it in 1957 I take great pride in excellent customer service. As in any business regretfully there are times things don't go as planned. I am very upset to hear the members were unhappy. That is not what they told me when we finished the job. It was the additional charge of $250.00 for the problems that occurred regarding additional labor to perform the initial work. This additional cost is what upset the members to the point where I told them they did not have to pay and the company took the financial loss. As agreed once the proposal was signed we began the work at the member residence. Clearly stated in the contract is the possibility of unforseen circumstances which would possibly mean additional cost. Once started there was difficulty as mentioned above. The members brought things to my attention and they were changed immediately to the members satisfaction. There were no additional charges for these changes. After a lengthy 3 way conversations between the members and myself they stated that did sign and agreed to the contract but did not want to pay and it was at that point I dropped the additional charge that was agreeded upon by signing the contact. I feel my company and associates did all we could do to make the members feel satisfied with the work unfortunately and with regret they now do not feel that way. We have many satisfied local and area customers through out the CT area. It is mine and the companies objective to provide the best customer service we can give and I feel the 57 years in business will attest to that service.
