Absolutely terrible experience at Rocky Mountain Forrest Products in Wheat Ridge, CO. These guys are awful to deal with, sell a sub-par product, and have an even worse return policy. Here is why… I decided to buy lumber from them for a small fence project…. 30ft of 6ft privacy cedar with a gate (posts, rails and pickets, cement). They advertise on Craigslist that they have the cheapest cedar prices in Denver, but here’s the catch… Apparently they sell 5 grades of cedar products for fences (Utility, Rustic, Standard, Quality and Premium). The prices they advertise are for the lowest grade product and didn’t even have any available at time of purchase. They even told me they wouldn’t recommend using it, it very poor quality. So why even advertise for it? They convinced me that that a higher grade product would be much better quality anyway and would be far superior to anything Home Depot sells. OK, since I was already there I decided to go ahead and buy from them, even though prices were now more expensive that Home Depot and Lowes. I try to give some of my business to smaller/local stores when I can. They have you pull around to the back and have guys to load everything for you. This is nice at the time, but you have no control over the selection of the lumber they give you. Also, they were out of the cement I just purchased, so I had to go back into the office and spend another 20 mins waiting for them to figure out how to refund me from a petty cash drawer. I started the fence a few days later and when I got around to checking out the lumber and selecting high quality pieces to use for the gate post and gate itself. I was very disappointed to say the least. I built fences/decks for 2 years while I was in college and have never seen cedar this consistently bad… 6ft Premium Pickets – I bought 55 pickets and 20 of them were either, cracked at the top or bottom, milled poorly with uneven sides, had soft/rotted spots, or were much thinner than the rest. Standard 2x4 Rails – I bought 12 rails and 5 of them were either, cracked at the top or bottom, had splits down the middle, had soft/rotted spots, or large knots/chunks out of them (some nearly half the width of the 2x4. Standard 4x4 Posts – I bought 5 posts and 3 of them had deep cracks running down them. They are closed in the evenings after 5:30, Saturday after noon, and Sundays… basically the only times I had to build the fence. So I used the products I could get away with using and then went to good ole Home Depot to buy the remaining lumber needed to finish. When I took the lumber back to attempt to return it, they looked at me like I was crazy. The manager (I’m guessing) took my receipt out of my hand and rudely circled a return policy on the receipt, and said “There is nothing we can do for you. Read the return policy.” I said, “I’m not trying to return these because I made a mistake and bought too many, I cannot use them, they are defective and useless. Come take a look at them.” They must get this a lot because he got very defensive and basically told me tough luck, I don’t care, stop bothering me! Apparently they ONLY return their premium grade products and only refunded me for the pickets, not the rails or posts which were still supposed to be a mid-high grade product. On top of all of that, I am not even convinced that I was given the grade/quality product I paid for. As sketchy as these guys were I would not be surprised if I paid for Standard or Premium lumber and received something lower. There is no way to know. What I do know is that I will never use them in the future or recommend them to anyone else. Just happy it was such a small project and I wasn’t stuck with $1000’s in unusable lumber.
