Coffman's installers were incredible! They had several challenges and I even changed some things with them on the fly, because I had that much confidence in them. This was the best contractor experience I have ever had as an individual and was equal to any I have ever had professionally (where contractors routinely bend over backwards to get repeat sales from those with deep pockets). I was actually happy when a couple of minor things went wrong (the installer advised me of these and they were easily fixed), because although they weren't the installer's fault, the way a contractor solves problems is the true measure of how good their customer service will be for you down the road. Even after the install was complete, I still kept receiving office assistance on upcoming Xcel rebate testing and to coordinate city/county building inspectors. The building inspections have already passed.
Description of Work: Although I am a layman in heating and A/C, I have been around many general contractors and their specialty sub-contractors because of my previous vocation. My position required me to be able to evaluate knowledge, workmanship and overall customer service because I was responsible for assisting homeowners as they repaired their homes following water, wind, hail and fire damage, among other things. This review praises the salesman, the 2 install men, the install manager and the office manager for their professionalism and high-level of customer service. Also, even with the extra work and equipment they added, they were the 2nd least expensive overall and if comparing apples-to-apples, they almost certainly would have been the least expensive. The lead installer was also certified (some are not) and the install mgr visited the house on 3 occasions as complexities dictated. Based on a referral from my neighbor, I hired Coffman and Co. to replace my 20 yr old furnace and A/C, and my 10 yr old water heater following the purchase of a new home, even though I did not know of Coffman prior to hiring them. There were 3 previous bids from highly qualified companies, 2 of which were from long-time Denver contractors I knew. The last one was from an Angie's List comment I was impressed with. All 4 companies did a very professional and honest job quoting the job and I was very impressed with most of what they recommended, however, only 2 went out of their way to solve my difficult issues. The 1st impressive thing done by J.P. of Coffmans, was to not bid the job at all, because based on my bid requirements, he knew he could never cool the master B.R. enough to satisfy me (as with nearly all 20 yr old [or older] 2 story houses in Colorado, supply lines were sized incorrectly, the main trunk line was undersized, there weren't enough return-air ducts and instead of separate heating/cooling zones for the 2nd and 1st stories, there was just one). Part of the cooling challenge was I didn't want a master B.R ceiling fan to be part of the solution because I wouldn't be able to sleep with it on. Because of his knowledge and integrity, I asked him to come back to my house, to be creative and to try to solve all of my issues (short of tearing out walls). He bid to upgrade my undersized 14 x 8" main supply trunk line to 17 x 8" (no other bidder said they could get it over 15 1/2 x 8"), add a 4th return-air to balance in/out airflow, add an over-sized supply line to the master B.R., pigtail the existing 2nd story return-air to a new location to draw the unbearable heat from the B.R., add a humidifier and add a thermostatically controlled rooftop fan as the final touch to remove hot air from the vaulted 2nd story areas. I could give more details than there is room to write but I want to make sure readers realize that although all 4 bidders could have bid this job the same way and completed the work, I didn't request all of these changes we eventually used, because I'm not an HVAC professional.
