Very Well. Rod was meticulous on detail and immediately corrected a few very minor problems (there were no major problems), before we had the time to catch them or talk to him. We were highly satisfied and impressed with his work. He had several subcontractors for some work. They seemed competent, and he appeared to closely monitor their work.

This is the second time preferred has done remodeling for us and, as the first time, they did a great job. Excellent planning, preparation, and very high quality work. The job was done to perfection at a very reasonable cost. They are punctual, honest, and forthright. Not only do they do excellent work, but Rodney is also very good at design and functionality. The sub contractors that Preferred works with are also very good at what they do, charge a reasonable price, and provide excellent customer service. Once the job is complete Rodney follows up to ask if everything is working out well and asks whether we are satisfied. We will never use another contractor for remodeling as long as Preferred is in business.
Description of Work: Remodeled guest bathroom, including shower and floor tile, installation of new fixtures, lighting, and heat. In addition, installed kitchen exhaust vent, painted guest Bath and bedroom, living room, dining room, and kitchen.

Rodney worked with us on ideas for, and the design of the covered patio. He recommended reasonably priced and dependable contacts for blueprints (required by our HOA) and electrical work. Rodney consulted us at each stage of the construction, ensuring our satisfaction with the work completed, and made good recommendations along the way. He cleaned the work site daily. He was professional in his conduct, had a strong work ethic, and the quality of his work was/is excellent. We are very pleased with our patio. Rodney did an outstanding job, and we highly recommend him. My delay in writing a review is not a reflection on the job, just a reflection on us with a busy life and a large family.
Description of Work: We had a permanent patio cover (with railing) installed over an existing 10'x15' attached concrete slab.

Rodney and his team were very professional and provided excellent work. They were always extremely thoughtful, conscientious, and willing to communicate throughout the entire process. The project was to take place in an extremely tight and small space. Rodney and his team worked very hard to frame and layout the space in a manner to best utilize the space and create an extremely functional laundry room. in a small space I would get daily phone call updates throughout the process, which was extremely important due to the tight timelines we had in place. Each day the job-site was extremely clean. The finished product turned out immaculate. We really appreciate everything Rodney and his team did to make this project a success.
Description of Work: Basement finish out to create a laundry room. Framed entire basement, moved plumbing for washer / dryer, added laundry sink, installed cabinetry / countertops, installed laminate flooring.

We are trying to get approval from out HOA to build a new deck so I have not had him do anything yet. The quoted price was $9,000. He was very professional, knowledgeable and had us meet with him at the material supplier's location so he could show us what our options were. This was really nice and he gave us a broad idea of pricing ranges as well as several different design options to tweak the price as well, which also was nice. We is working with us to get the permits and contracting needs squared away.

We wanted to update our 1970's house by replacing the ugly, flat brown doors and woodwork. We also wanted a tile backsplash in the kitchen. When Rodney came for the first time, he said I had called the right person - and he was right! He helped us decide exactly what we wanted to do and he had lots of creative ideas and good advice on how to prioritize and proceed. He guided us in selecting the doors, trim and hardware and suggested other minor updates that would make a big difference: under-cabinet lights in the kitchen, replacing the plugs and switches, and updating some of the light fixtures. Rodney and his crew were very careful and respectful of our home. They protected the carpet and furniture and used a fan system to minimize the dust. They cleaned up every evening before leaving. Rodney called me most every morning to let me know what was happening that day and who would be coming. The job went smoothly and Rodney was very accommodating about add-ons as the project went along. These included re-tiling the entry and hallway, moving the door going from the family room to the garage, and even mounting the TV on the wall. Rodney is meticulous in his work and he is truly an old-world style craftsman. Everything has to be just right and it is! He can do just about any kind of job and I would not hesitate to recommend him. Update: Several weeks after the job was finished, I noticed that one little 4-inch piece of base trim had not gotten replaced - it was upstairs by a seldom-used bedroom. I called Rodney to see if he had a little scrap and he came over, cut and fitted the piece perfectly - even painted it. It's reassuring to know that we can count on Rodney to back up his work and to fix any little glitches down the road. One more reason to recommend him and to have him do work for us in the future.
Description of Work: Rodney and his crew removed and replaced all the interior doors, hardware, baseboard and trim. They also installed a new front door and storm door, and moved the location of the door going into the garage. They removed a weird interior window and filled the hole. They installed new ceramic tile in the front entryway and a tile backsplash in the kitchen. In addition, they mounted the TV on the wall and built a shelf above the washer and dryer. Rodney arranged for other contractors to install under-cabinet lighting, replace all the plugs and outlets, do drywall repair and paint all the new doors, trim, and the entire interior of the house.

They never responded to a request for quote. My original comment above was based on not receiving a call. For whatever reason Angies list had my home phone which I never check and there was a message from Preferred home repair. As a result I have removed my poor rating.

After obtaining quotes from other contractors, I chose Rodney because you know when you can trust someone. From the moment I met Rodney, and I have a good "radar" screen, I felt relieved after weeks of worrying about finding the right contractor. He was easy to communicate with and really took the time to listen. You also know when you are in good hands. Rodney is a highly reliable and qualified contractor; he knows his business and what he's doing. This took a huge burden off my shoulders because I was able to relax, knowing things would be done right. He is meticulous and cares about his work as if it were his own home. While he has a professional work attitude, he is also down to earth and fun to work with. His worker, Michael, did an outstanding job as well. The trim work he did is true perfection. I love it! In fact, we hired him again to do some other work around our house! Last, Rodney assisted us greatly in helping us determine the scope of the work we wanted done. He was patient and not pushy at all. In the end, we got everything we wanted done and could not be happier with the results. We would highly recommend Rodney and his company to anyone looking for an outstanding contractor that you can trust. Mike and Paige Schultz

The water line running to the freezer of our our refrigerator cracked n the middle of the night and sprayed water on our hardwood floors and wall in the kitchen for about 3 hours before we woke up and were able to turn off the water supply. The water soaked down through the floor into the ceiling of the basement and did a fair amount of damage to the ceiling and walls were the water dripped down. After having everything dried out (by a seperate company), Rodney did and excellent job of replacing the areas of the ceiling and wall were the damage was done and did an amazing job of matching and blending the texture to match the existing walls. He replaced damaged baseboards and then repainted the entire room (ceiling and walls) to insure color match. Basement looks like new again.
Description of Work: Repairs to basement ceiling, walls and trim due to water leak from refrigerator located on floor above. The sections of the ceiling and walls that were damaged were repaired with new drywall and texturing. The baseboards that had water damage were replaced as well. All walls and ceiling were repainted.

Description of Work: Preferred came out and I promised him $100 for the quote. He gave me some intel on my deck and what needed to happen and how it didn't meet code and then said he couldn't do it because of the license. I e-mailed him my Visa info and he wrote back "I wish you luck on your project...but I can't take your money for this. I have deleted your CC information." So he is a stand-up guy.

If you were to make a list of all of the elements that you would prefer, no, require in a contractor Preferred has every one of those elements and more. Rodney has it all - he is absolutely the best contractor we have ever hired. We literally felt that when Rodney and his partner were here we were having frineds over for the day. If you read his Business Description he lives up to every aspect of it and more. We had gotten two estimates from other contractors before we met with Rodney for his estimate. We knew within 10 minutes after meeting him that we would hire him. My husband did remodeling for hire in the past, we have completely gutted and remodeled two homes that we owned, and my husband is a perfectionist, so our standards are pretty high. We live in an earth-sheltered home that was built in 1985. We have remodeled all except the master bath. Because this small bathroom had a huge jacuzzi literally in the middle of it, and no shower, we rarely used it. The biggest challenge was the redesign. We hadn't figured it out completely, and other contractors who looked at it hadn't presented any ideas that seemed to solve all of the challenges. Rodney was challenged, but never gave up until he absolutely solved every concern and addressed every need we presented to him. He is an excellent problem-solver as evidenced by addressing and solving the leak in the ceiling rather than just covering it up, by ensuring that the light from the outside flowed into the inside, which is essential in an earth-sheltered home, and by developing a design so that not one inch of space was under-utilized. He is honest, pays attention to detail, flexible, and provides ways to save money without compromising design or functionality. He is very organized and cleaned up every day. One of the things that we liked best about Rodney is that he does much of the work himself and was onsite whenever there was a sub-contractor onsite. Everything he did was to perfection. The sub-contractors and suppliers he works with are excellent. He is an excellent communicator and is patient. He talked with both of us every day. He is also exceptionally good at listening, one of the best charactaristics a contractor can have, as that is one of the major keys to satisfying the customer. He is also exceptional in that he makes money by doing quality work and by providing excellent sub-contractos and suppliers, not by trying to make money by doing it the cheapest or fastest. I could go on and on. If you want the best hire Rodney, he's not just Preferred, he's essential.
Description of Work: Preferred (Rodney) did a complete redesign and remodel of our master bath and adjoining master bedroom. Our earth-sheltered home was built in 1985, so all fixtures were outdated. Rodney removed everything in the bathroom, including a large jacuzzi. There was no shower in the bathroom. They incorporated a closet in the master bedroom to build a shower which they tiled. This required moving some of the original plumbing so they had to use a jackhammer to open the cement floor to get to the plumbing. They installed a tub and added tile around the perimeter. They installed a new vanity with double sinks and added a silstone counter top. Installed two mirrored medicine cabinets. There was a small leak in the ceiling of the toilet area which no one had been able to fix. Instead of trying to address the symptoms of the leak, as other contractors had recommended and/or tried, Rodney determined the source and fixed a drainage problem which stopped the leak. They removed the carpeting, added an electric heating system in the floor, and installed tile flooring. They installed a linen cabinet. They added a door between the bathroom and bedroom, and a windowed pocket door to allow sunlight to shine into the bathroom. They utilized an area in the bedroom that was essentially wasted space to add a closet for the one that was incorporated into the bathroom to build the shower. They added by-pass doors in another bedroom closet to replace folding doors. Because of the redesign the bedroom carpeting had to be replaced.

The entire project lasted 8 months. Overall, it was fantastic! Rodney's subcontractors are great and the crews were professional and well supervised. Rodney is the best contractor - period! I would not have even considered taking on this size project without him. He was delighted to come assess the house before we purchased it and maintained a great, positive attitude throughout. His eye for design is very good and he always generates multiple alternatives to resolve the inevitable situations that arise!
Description of Work: PHRC did a major remodel of the entire house with the objectives of both updating and creating wheelchair accessibility. PHRC: redid the kitchen and laundry - installed cabinets, granite, sinks, faucets, hood; widened hallways; gutted and replaced 4 bathrooms - including two roll-in showers, European glass, and all tiling; moved a staircase- installed new railings; replaced all floors (hardwood and tile installed), all baseboards and casings, and most doors; removed popcorn ceilings, drywalled and painted; designed and installed a fireplace surround; replaced most lighting; rewired and recabled;and installed flat screen tvs. They had to remove walls and elevate beams to gain head room in two places. They moved all heat registers/vents from baseboard to floor, installed a second water heater, insulated the attic, installed a new gas fireplace, and hardwired alarms. The attention to detail is exquisite. One side project that everyone loves is the conversion of the old fireplace mantel into a coat rack for the laundry room. One of my favorites is the conversion of 3 small closets in the back hall into one large pantry with glass sliders - totally functional and wonderful! The laundry room serves as a butler's pantry off the kitchen - complete with wine cooler/beverage center, ice maker, and lighted overhead cabinets for crystal barware - a perfect use of space! We could not be happier!

Rodney did a terrific job. He has a very good sense about design and esthetics and is an excellent problem-solver, with lots of ideas about how to resolve any design and construction problem I had. I am very happy with all the work he did. He was very professional, cleaned up every day, and did beautiful work.
Description of Work: Rodney put in a large concrete pad for my dog houses and redirected and rebuilt a drainage system in my dog yard. He bulit a retaining wall to control erosion and brought in rock to further protect against erosion from heavy storms. He also replaced a soffit, repaired a downspout and redirected its drainage, and replaced a large timber in my driveway. All this required a lot of tractor work, good design sense, and problem-solving.

Our front porch needed to be replaced because it was not done correctly the first time (when the house was built). It looks like it had been repaired but not replaced in the past. The footing were not done correctly which caused the concrete (about 18" thick) to drop off on one side which also pulled the overhanging roof down. They tore out the whole porch and front walk in order to repair/replace them properly. They leveled the roof line and fixed the footings before redoing the porch and sidewalk. After tearing everything out they also noticed that the stairs to the front door were not done to code (they were all different heights) and they took the time to make sure they were to code this time.
Description of Work: We needed our front porch replaced and some work done on our roof.

From the first few minutes of the first meeting with Rodney, my wife and I felt he was an honest man who takes great pride in his work. We were not wrong. Rodney has a great deal of energy and is genuinely excited about his work. He had excellent suggestions not only in the initial design but througout the project. Rodney's relationships with various vendors and trades made for a comfortable experience as we went about selecting fixtures and finishes, as well as confidence that he was happy with the work of the subs. Rodney also took on several change requests in stride and was up front about the costs and impacts. Rodney has a bit of a creative streak which is what enables him to make great suggestions, but at times was a challenge for my wife and I as corporate professionals. That said, I cannot imagine working with a better GC or a better guy. We would without question use him again. The final outcome was fantastic - anyone who has seen the bathroom comments on the wonderful finish work.

Preferred Home Repair discovered serious structural problems with my deck that other companies hadn't noticed. Basically, years in the soil had caused rot to the degree that the deck could have collapsed at any time. The other contractors would have done work that would not have made any difference once the deck collapsed. Preferred was able to repair all structural problems and finish repairs to all decks to the degree they looked better than the original decks. I was constantly kept aware of costs and do not feel the costs were excessive to any degree. Rodney is a very detail oriented, thorough craftsman. I'll definitely have him back to do more work! I highly recommend Preferred Home Repair and Construction

Overall we are very pleased with the attention to detail and craftsmanship. We plan on hiring Preferred Home Repair and Construction again to complete our basement.
Description of Work: We had moved into an older home (1958) and the kitchen and bathroom had never been touched. We had to completely gut the bathroom, rearrange the entire thing, including plumbing and sewage to give us more room and a more efficient layout. Awesome! This was a very big project and it was completed 3 years after the home was originally built but looks like it was completed at the time of initial construction. Rodney has tremendous experience and offered great design ideas. He did much of the framing and installation work himself but also used a number of other contractors for portions of this project. He is a perfectionist who has high standards of quality for his own work and for those he employs on the job. Every "punch list" item we encountered was completed before Rodney finished the job. He is honest and dependable so I trusted him to be in my home even when I couldn't be there. He's the first call I'd make for any new project. Worth every penny!
Description of Work: Remodel of the lower level which included a temperature controlled wine cellar, a wine cave with stone walls and an iron gate, a 12 foot bar with custom cabinetry, granite countertops and appliances, and an office with custom built in shelves and paneling. All carpeting was replaced with hardwood floors and ceramic tile. Existing electrical, plumbing and sound system all required modification and integration into the project.

I cannot imagine how this could have gone any better. I was in California for most of this Colorado construction. We made changes by telephone or email; daily communication was the norm. Billing was efficient and understandable. Rodney's attention to detail, personal expertise, and knowledge of all the trades are truly remarkable. He and his staff are equally dependable, friendly, and super-competent. I would not consider using another contractor.
Description of Work: Replaced wall-to-wall carpet with hardwood (1600 square feet); remodeled bathroom to make it wheelchair accessible - roll-in shower, appropriate height vanity, all new tile; widened doorways for wheelchair access, including replacing slider to patio; constructed all new 640sf deck and stairs. Work included providing subcontractors - all of whom were superb. Since I was new to the area, Rodney's suggestions for stores and vendors were much appreciated.
