+ -1 moreWe hired Ted because he seemed organized with his estimate and timeline, and was willing to work with our quick timeline and get the project completed as quickly as possible. The project did start on time, but experienced many delays. His subcontractors were subpar and couldn't follow instructions, therefore requiring multiple re-work and city inspection visits until they could finally get things right. Ted's crew lacked attention to detail and did not produce quality finished work (grout missing in many locations on floor tile, grout chipping off on backsplash, damaged door frames, dishwasher installed incorrectly, unfinished transition from tile to carpet, and so much more). On several invoices, Ted had inaccurate accounting. Sometimes he would come up with dollar amounts that he couldn't justify when we would questions him. Ted knew we were dissatisfied with the project, and one of his crew members offered some free labor in exchange for a positive review. I can not recommend Ted or his crew.

Description of Work: Obtain and install new vanity in powder room, install new sink/counter, install faucet, patch dry wall, paint, put up shelf, mirror, paper holder. Obtain and install replacement faucet and handles in 2 bathrooms, patch and paint, remove old and install new mirrors. Replace plumbing valve, patch and paint bedroom.

Ted was very thorough in examining our kitchen and bath for a quote, gave us a very competitive bid, and got us the bid within days. The contract was laid out very professionally and was detailed. So far our experience has been very positive and we are looking forward to working with him in a month. Will follow up once work is complete.
Description of Work: We are remodeling our kitchen (removing old fixtures and appliances, knocking down a wall, rewiring, drywall, etc) and remodeling a small half bath.

+ -1 moreWe compiled a list of 14 A-rated contractors from Angie's list and start making phone calls. Of the 14 contractors we called, only 4 were able to come to our home to provide an estimate. Apple Remodeling was one of the four. Ted came to our home on time, listened to what we wanted done, took measurements, and promised us an estimate within a couple of days. In a couple of days, we received a written estimate, as promised. While we waited for the other three written estimates, Ted and Wendy continued to communicate with us. Of the four contractors that came to our home, only 3 provided written estimates. While Ted's bid was substantially higher than the other two, Ted and Wendy made exceptional efforts to win our business. They delivered what they said they would, on time, and in a professional manner. Ted was very knowledgeable and provided many suggestions that we found very useful. While we did not have Ted perform the work, I would definitely recommend Ted and Wendy should you need work done.
Description of Work: In early December, 2012, our sewer backed up into our basement, flooding two bedrooms, a bathroom, the main room, and our laundry room. Mitigation included removal of the carpet and pad, a two foot flood cut on most of the basement walls, asbestos abatement, and mold remediation. Following the mitigation and asbestos abatement, we sought bids to complete the repairs. We decided to install tile instead of replacing the carpet since this was the second time the sewer had backed up into our basement.

Additional issues around the house were addressed during the remodel allowing for a number of other projects to be finished in addition to the basement. Enjoyable contractor and staff to work with. Allowed owners to be fully involved in the process including the layout and design. Overall good experience and looking forward to using Apple for other renovations in the future.

+ -1 morePS. Nobody asked for "a jetted tub, plus much else" things. We were wiling to do part of the jobs ourself. The approximate first estimate was less. As for the $49 for the design, we bought coupon to check the estimate. They sell it. It does not mean that we have to go ahead with the job. As I said price was expensive for us, maybe it's right for somebody else.
Description of Work: they made estimate for me, but the price is too expensive.

+ 0 moreThe day they were supposed to show up, they did not. We left our business, brought in extra help so we could leave. We arrived at our house an hour early. They never showed up. Because of time constraints and scheduling for the carpet people and window people, we ended up calling another company. The one thing they did do was order a roll off container which we did not ask for. We have paid them on our credit card for the container in Dec. Til this date they still have not paid the roll off people. At first they said we will pay them dont worry. For the last two and a half months they have not responded to our calls even when we said we might have to get legal advice. They have not answered any calls from the roll off company either. The roll off company is going to put a lien on our property. We have to pay them . We have already paid Apple Remodeling for this. Be careful when you choose a company that uses a sub contractor. If they do not pay the sub, and collect money from you, guess who will have to pay the sub. We do not like having to pay twice.
Description of Work: The services that were to be preformed were to get our house "move out"ready. Fixing walls, replacing doors, etc.

+ -1 moreI called Apple remodeling for an estimate to finish my basement. Ted came to house on time, and was very thorough and professional. He was very patient and answered all of my questions (this is my first remodel project). I am on a very tight budget and Apple remodeling came in above what I was willing to spend. We ended up choosing another contractor for the job, but this was driven by cost on not my overall experience. I would certainly consider using Apple remodeling for future projects based on my experience. I rated a B for punctuality because the estimate came in a few days later than I expected. I sent a reminder to Ted and he had an estimate in my hands right away.
Description of Work: Estimate for a basement refinish...no actual services performed.

Follow up via e-mail: Provided me with a quote on the price and wanted me to confirm that this was in my budget before providing me with drawings, I still have not received any drawings, and would really like my money back at this point in time (12/30/12) 1/1/13- I received a clean, precise drawing detailing a bathroom and walk in closet that included all of the details we discussed during our consultation. We were satisfied with the end result.

+ -1 moreWe arranged to have Ted come to our house to give us an estimate for a bathroom remodel and also to advise us on some work we are considering for another area of our house. We had purchased a couple of $49 floor plan design certificates on Angie's list, and when Ted came to the house he wrote us a check to refund that purchase saying that since we were not really looking at changing floor plan design - instead, just looking at basic same structure remodel work - the coupon wasn't necessary (as estimates are free!). We didn't expect this refund, and really appreciate handling our request with integrity in this way. Ted set reasonable expectations with us, seemed to be very knowledgable, and I think will be willing to modify his approach to work within our budget and goals. So far, we're only at phase 1 of our project work, but so far we are very pleased with Ted's work and style.

+ -1 moreThe consultation went well, and I did receive a floor plan, and a price. When I asked for a breakdown on how that price was determined, I did not receive an answer. I have been waiting for that response for a few weeks now. Overall, I would say that I got what I paid for (a consultation and floor plan), and really liked the owner and what he had to say. However, his follow-through for more information gave me serious cause for concern, so I guess I would look elsewhere for a new craftsman to help me with this project.

+ -1 moreThe representative showed up on time and well presented. We discussed our wants and desires. He listened intently and presented some good ideas. He then took some measurements and said that he would send us the drawings in a couple weeks. I personally would have like to seen some other bathroom designs they had done and seen the relative costs for those bathrooms. This would have been really nice. I would have liked to have then been able to browse some catalogs for some possible other ideas. I didn't have that "wow" moment but maybe it was too early in discussing the redesign of the bathroom. I think they should have committed to a specific date that they would have the drawings available.

+ -1 moreIt went well, the two handymen were knowledgeable, but they did have to re-hang one mirror that was not centered.
Description of Work: I bought the AngiesList Big Deal Handyman for the Day at $319. Apple Remodeling (Wendy) contacted me right away, and we scheduled a date (the date I selected, about 2 weeks from ordering). I knew exactly what I needed - we had to replace a non-standard interior door, and when received it was about 1/4" too wide. I needed it cut to size. I also had 2 large (3' x 4') mirrors that needed to be hung, my storm door did not fit properly, and the door between the house and garage needed weatherstripping. The only complaint I had was that I requested an 8AM start. The Handyman for a Day was for 6.5 hours. The night before, Wendy called - I wasn't available, so she left a message that it would be 2 people at noon. When I didn't respond, she just sent an email that it would be 2 people at noon rather than one a 8 AM. At 12:15, the two men showed up. They planed the door, and it fits/works great. They also installed the door knob. They inspected the two exterior doors, and adjusted the strike plate so the doors fit tighter. The door to the garage already had weather-stripping, so moving the strikeplate was the better option. The installed the two mirrors. When I checked one of the mirrors, it wasn't where I had marked for it to be and it was nowhere near centered. They moved it when I asked them.

Description of Work: Ted is very responsive and anxious to make the job right. The Drywall subcontract did not perform at high a level as the rest of the team, taking way too much time to complete the work ( being billed on a time and material basis) and the quality was not great. This made the job more expensive than it need to be. Ted did discount much of it after I called it to his attention. I would certainly use them again.

+ 2 moreThe contractor was extremely friendly. I thought the estimate I got from him was way too high. I wanted to get an itemization of what he was charging for the labor but he was not willing to do that. He used some program that made it easier for him to do the estimate and he didn’t give me an hourly break up on what he was going to do, so I went with another contractor. I really liked him, he was really nice and he was just a few blocks away from me but I just didn’t like the estimate and that he couldn't give me a little more detail on labor. He was good with his responsiveness, as far as calling me back and giving me the estimate when he said he would goes, but the estimate was too high. He was here when he said he would be here; he was right on time but he came only once. He was very professional. I only talked to him for about half an hour and then he called me the next day and told me that he was bringing in the estimate, so when I came home it was there at the front porch. I just told him I will look at it and let him know and that was the end of it, I never heard back from him. Personally, he was nice but I haven’t used him professionally except for getting the estimate and having a minor interaction with him.

+ 2 moreSuperior service from the very beginning to the end. I was very appreciative of the open communication and consideration during the project. I had a very basic shower installed in the basement and Apple was kind enough to set expectations up front that the shower would not be likely to last longer than a few years. This company had my best interest in mind. Rates were great, estimates came in spot-on, and the room was left cleaner than before the project was started. I couldn't be happier, thank you.

+ 1 morePerformed excellent work but used the entire day installing it when it should have been a 2 hour installation. The remainder of the work I had planned for him was left undone with him telling me he was donating me 15 minutes after spending 6 3/4 hours on a 2 hour job! Again, excellent work but if paying for the entire day, do not bank on a lot being accomplished.

Description of Work: I recently had Ted do some remodeling work in my kitchen. He installed a garbage disposer, dishwasher and water line for a refrigerator. In order to install the dishwasher, he had to remove a kitchen cabinet.
