Uncle Brian's Home Improvements

Kitchen and Bath Remodeling, Finished Carpentry and Woodworking, General Remodeling,

About us

Uncle Brian has 39 years of experience in the Home Improvement Industry and has completed thousands of jobs -leaving many customers not only satisfied, but feeling they received more than they were promised. Treating Clients as I would want to be treated is my philosophy in business and life in general. I have undertaken projects in various aspects of the Home Improvement business and specialize in Kitchen and Bathroom Remodeling, as well as the Installation of Interior and Exterior Doors. My strengths include (1) Finding Real Value and completing jobs with quality materials at a price I would be willing to pay! (2) Our slogan is "Getting it Done Right -the First Time" and this is the principle I use to bring Real Value to Each new Client. (3) I rarely ask for money upfront -unless I'm ordering Special Order Materials. (3) Simply stated, I enjoy making peoples' dreams a reality and making the process more of a pleasure than a hassle. (4) I come prepared to get your project complete with the experience and equipment necessary to get your project done right - the first time! I'm equipped to handle small to midsize projects that require Quality Results. Our specialties are Kitchen & Bathroom Remodels and Window & Door Installations. Each year we receive hundreds of requests for quotes that don't fall within our specialties. We provide free estimates for well over 100 projects per year, but we do not give free estimates to everyone that calls - for the following 4 reasons: 1. When our calendar is closed, we do not estimate new jobs. 2. We only supply free estimates to folks in our service area. 3. We decide which jobs to quote based on our prior commitments, manpower, and experience, among other things. 4. Our minimum labor for free estimates is $5,000. We Don't Work On RENTAL Properties, but if you're a landlord, we'd be happy to work on your primary residence. Due to federal regulations (EPA), we don't work on houses older than 1970. Thanks, Uncle Brian

I want this review to be off the chain because that is exactly how I view Uncle Brian's Home Improvement Company. This was our second project with them. When Uncle Brian finished remolding our kitchen in 2013, there was no doubt that this would be our contractor forever. In fact I had them write us in on the schedule immediately after the kitchen remodel for a date in 2014. We had him designed and build a deck and it is the most beautiful deck ever. I told him what I wanted and the result was more awesome than I had imagined. I was impressed from the very beginning, because the foundation they laid was a sure sign that we would have a deck that would stand the test of time and it?s beautiful. This project confirmed to us, that Uncle Brian is consistent in his work ethics. We knew each day that there would be workman on site and believe me they do not fool around, ever workman is committed to the task. Uncle Brian?s team is top notch, they know their craft and he has great insight when it comes to making choices and decisions for what works best for the client and the project; pays close attention to details and does quality work. I?m planning my project for next year?We do not have to move, Uncle Brian?s Home Improvements is making our house a dream home. J?Mae Stewart Aurora, Colorado

Thanks for your kind Review! We've worked for this Client on 3 larger projects and look forward to working together again in the future. Our past customers take about 5 moths a year from our calendar - so we only have about 7 months a year Left - to book new client projects. We focus on making our customers' vision a reality and the remodeling experience a positive one. This is not always easy - so we work almost 7 days a week when we need to - to make it happen. Dealing with past clients is always a pleasure since we already have a working relationship and know what to expect. I'm (Uncle Brian) a straight shooter and will let our customers know what i think about their particular design ideas or Tile selection - whether i like them or not. I try to nudge them toward designs and materials I know work well together - but will acquiesce to them after I've had a chance to share my thoughts on a subject. I have strong opinions on certain materials - I've seen many common building materials fail - so I do what I can to steer my Clients clear of any possible problems. An example: most folks will choose flooring strictly by the color/texture they like - my experience has shown me to choose flooring according to the location first. So Kitchen and Bathroom floors should at least be water resistant and better yet water proof. Everyone hopes their experience will be ideal and water problems will occur to someone else- but my experience tells me that most folks will deal with water problems from time to time and their experience and frustration will be greatly reduced if they make good choices early on. My focus is to not only build my customers Dream Kitchen or Bathroom - but also to have them steer clear of common problems faced by many folks. Happy Customers = Happy Uncle Brian Have a Great Summer! UB

Ray and Dan came 5 minutes early and were ready to work on the various projects that I needed help with. My cat pulled down the wire racking in my closet and I needed to have it fixed. Ray and Dan did an AWESOME job installing a closet rack and closet organizer I purchased from home depot and amazon.com. If I did not know any better I would swear that I got a closet upgrade when I bought the house. It looks wonderful and it works fantastically. I can not say enough about the quality work they performed installing my ceiling fan, installing the closet organizer, and putting up hooks and racks in my garage to maximize space. They were so pleasant and professional. They are extra busy and now I know why. Best $239.00 I have spent in a long long time.R

Thanks for the Kind Review! Ray moved East last year and is sorely missed. We ran 2 crews for a few years but are back to 1 crew since Ray left. It's hard to find a carpenter that's ready every morning to take on a new challenge and please a new client. When we find another Ray - we'll put another crew back on the Road with our Name and Blessing, til then we'll stick to our one crew and continuing Wowing our clients. We don't make excuses and we definitely don't disappoint out customers. It's been almost 40 years of making folks dream - a Reality and find the vast majority of people are simply Great to work with! Uncle Brian and Company

We bought their 'contractor for a day' coupon on Angie's list for $240, and had their electrician come out and wire and install two new ceiling fans, and re-wire an existing globe light to a new switch. They coordinated with us beforehand so that I could purchase all necessary materials before our service date, and were very friendly and professional. Their electrician was also very professional, capable, friendly, and considerate when he was here. I had to run out and get a few more materials when he was here, and felt totally comfortable with him in our house with my wife and baby. Though he was only scheduled to be here for six hours, he ran into some unforseen issues with the existing conditions (we have a very old house) and stayed until he got it done, and really went above and beyond for us. We were very happy with our experience, felt like it was a good value, and will definitely be using Uncle Brian's again.

Thanks for the Review! Having a good experience with a Contractor depends on his attitude toward the Job and his focus. I meet many Contractors that believe that they are in a race - and their focus is on getting a particular job done as quickly as possible. That wouldn't be so bad - But they usually also want the maximum profit. I have this insight because many Contractors talk candidly to each other. We don't focus on those principles - I want a quality product that my customer will enjoy and fair price that I would be willing to pay myself. That's a simple formula - so it's easy to stay on track. Having a good experience during a Remodel is a Big focus of Uncle Brian's - so I do everything I can to make my client feel at ease during the process. I communicate often and ask lots of questions. I do this because although, I know how high most folks want their shower head - I don't know how high you'd prefer yours. So - I ask that and lots of other questions. That lets my client know I am there to please - it's that simple. Uncle Brian

I contacted the provider via email and let them know I found them on Angie's List. I have a list of remodeling projects, most of which I would like done all at the same time or all of them (depending upon the total cost and my budget). It was required that I send emails with pictures, etc. before anyone would even call me. When Brian did call me, he let me know that they could do my projects but would charge a quote fee of $60. Brian explained this as they are not in the quoting business and they charge a fee if the first project you want done is less than $5,000, their minimun charge (please not this is their MINIMUM CHARGE PER PROJECT EVEN IF YOU HAVE MORE WORK TO BE DONE). I did inform Brian that I would not pay this quote fee as the total work I wanted done was most likely more than $5K (which he confirmed it would be) and that I'm not in the business to pay fees for free estimates. His company could either come out and quote the business or decline to quote. He then texted me and declined the work right after we hung up the phone, which was expected. Why did your company have me send pictures, emails, and texts only to be treated like this? This was a rude waste of a potentila customer's time.
Description of Work: Nothing...couldn't even get to the quote stage.

We couldn't have been more pleased with Brian, Dave, and Jeremiah. They were professional, thorough, and extremely helpful throughout the entire process. We created a vision for our bathroom with Brian, and he really worked with us and guided us to achieve what we wanted. He went shopping with us and helped us find finishing touches as the project continued. He was always willing to change or add to something as needed. Brian was also respectful of the house and made it easy to maneuver, even with our toddler roaming around. We felt like he lead the renovation without asking too much of us but also included us when needed. I would highly recommend Brian, especially if you're looking for someone who cares a great deal about his work. He let us feel at ease, and we will absolutely be calling him again as we move forward on further house projects.
Description of Work: Brian and his crew renovated our bathroom from start to finish (including but not limited to): Installed toilet, tub, floors, lighting, pocket door (with built in mirror), window, and drywall Installed and assembled vanity, makeup vanity, tiles, faucets, bathroom hardware, wall mirrors (with medicine cabinet addition) Assisted in additional multiple projects around the house such as: Door repair Water shut off repair Water alarm install Laundry room floor and drywall Brian also offered advice on future projects and issues within the house.

Thank You for your Review!! This [Member Information Removed] Bathroom remodel was more involved than most because it required we remove 2 [Member Information Removed] walls. We expanded the [Member Information Removed] bathroom by reducing the size of an adjacent [Member Information Removed] room - this was my [Member Information Removed] idea and one I thought well worth the time and expense. The original bathroom was chopped up due to a partition wall that separated the vanity area from the toilet and small tub area. We [Member Information Removed] an over sized deep soaker tub to replace the tiny tub and added beautiful Italian porcelain tile with a natural [Member Information Removed] mosaic on the back wall - it was [Member Information Removed]! My clients come up with so many wonderful ideas - I sometimes initially resist concepts that I haven't tried in the past, but I'm learning to keep an open mind when it comes to letting my [Member Information Removed] design a truly one of a kind creation. I will object when their idea runs counter to building codes or common sense however. I had a client that insisted I swing a basement door over his staircase - I explained that that arrangement could be dangerous and was contrary to code. When he said he didn't care - I politely told him to get someone else to handle this project. The following day - he asked me to install the new basement door to swing into the hall - rather than over the stairs. I was happy to comply and sorry to have had to take a firm stand. We do our best to "fit in" and appreciate all the kind and generous folks we've worked for in Colorado. FYI - I'm from NJ originally - and have been in Denver for almost 10 years now. Happy Remodeling and Enjoy the Summer Weather! Uncle Brian and Company

Brian and his crew are awesome. Professional, punctual, tidy, on schedule. Constant communication from Brian, who was on the job site daily. Did additional work (especially electrical) that wasn't part of the original plan, but not unexpected in a 64 year old house. Additions, like more smoke detectors and water detectors throughout our home, were thoughtful and much appreciated. Made some great recommendations concerning findings in our attic crawlspace that we would not have known about had Brian's crew not been up there. Looking forward to bringing Brian's team back for a kitchen remodel.

Thanks for Your Review!! Older homes are more difficult to Remodel - especially when we're talking about moving or removing walls and moving plumbing. I usually pass on this type of work - due to new EPA regulations, but decided to tackle this project after doing some testing for the presence of lead paint and finding none present. Lead based paint was used in the past in areas of homes such as the bathroom and kitchen and on windows and doors. Homes built before 1978 [Member Information Removed] the potential to contain this undesirable product - though I usually find the presence of lead paint in homes built before 1950. The paint is not at all dangerous to folks when its buried behind multiple coats of today's latex based paints - the problem arises when that old film is disturbed - by let's say sanding/scraping or demolition work - to name a few. The lead in that old paint becomes released in dust particles and will make its way to the floor and that's where the problem can occur, you see - lead is sweet to the taste - children crawling around the floor get their fingers on the dust and guess where it ends up? That's right - in their mouths - and when they discover this stuff tastes sweet - they want more! Lead is toxic to all - but especially poisonous to children with under developed brains. You can find more information online about lead paint and its potential risks. We are all about safety on our job sites - I educate my customers daily about the absolute need to keep Carbon monoxide and Smoke detectors in good working order and why these little devices can be such life savers. We also recommend water detectors - a little device the size of a smoke detector that will alert you if there is a leak in your vanity or sink base. I also utilize these handy devices near the water heater. They won't save your life but they can save you alot of anxiety by alerting you "early on" to water damage. Keeping the area around the furnace and water heater uncluttered and free of combustibles is another smart idea and necessary to keep your home safe. Gfi receptacles are another life saver and should be installed in Kitchens and bathrooms to avoid electrical hazards. Today's homes are becoming safer than ever due to better and safer electrical wiring and building codes that require safe building practices. Arc fault breakers are just now becoming required equipment in many areas. These devices replace traditional breakers in your service panel and will shut down any circuit where an arc is detected. These little arcs can create a fire in some extreme circumstances so eliminating them (arcs) from our homes with these special breakers is really a good idea. Be Safe! Uncle Brian

Luck was with us; we had no hitches in our get-along. He installed new cabinets and counter tops, opened a doorway, moved a wall and made excellent suggestions. Additionally, our home is now more open and our kitchen is actually is about 4" larger, because he found a dead space in our walls. With his designs and management everything came together smoothly, including the smallest of details. His plumber and electrician came exactly when needed and got their jobs done quickly. All together the work lasted five weeks. We are happy, happy, happy with our elegant, new rooms. Basically, Uncle Brian went above and beyond our expectations getting us our dream home.
Description of Work: Uncle Brian completely redesigned and remodeled our kitchen and powder room, both of which turned out better than I had even hoped for. Uncle Brian is a man to be emulated! I do recommend him to my friends, who are on his waiting list right now, as am I. Indeed, I need two more bathrooms remodeled this year.

Thank you for your Review!! It makes me happy when I see all A's on our score card - with one exception. I think a B grade on price is totally acceptable. First of all - I prefer honesty from my customers and if they feel that our pricing was very good (which translates to me to mean fair/reasonable) I am happy because our mission is to give the folks their moneys worth. They don't need to know that we pay about 35% of our Labor charges to the Federal and State governments / Insurance companies and overhead expenditures - money that flies out of our hands shortly after we collect it. So, when we still make the folks feel that they got their moneys worth - I feel that we've done our job. We really enjoy working for people that appreciate what we do - and these folks were obviously tickled thru out the process, that puts me at ease and allows me to do my best work, which we did for this nice couple. During the remodeling process - I discovered a 6" space behind a wall that was left there to make utility placement quick and easy. I explained to [Member Name Removed] that I could tighten things up a bit and move their wall back about 4 1/2" - basically opening up their kitchen by almost half a foot. I told them that this project would take about 1 1/2 additional days and we discussed the added cost. They decided to proceed with this small expansion and we were all very pleased with the results 2 days later. That 4 1/2" made such a big difference in their kitchen - I'm so glad we took the extra time to make it happen. [Member Name Removed] is a craftsman of sorts himself - so I really appreciated our discussions when he got home in the evenings - he taught me a lot about his fascinating trade. I look forward to working for these new found friends again soon! Uncle Brian

Uncle Brian's Home Improvements wasn't the cheapest estimate I received to get our front entry door replaced, but getting your front door installed correctly is important in many ways, and it was worth every penny. A few thoughts about the experience: From the time I first reached out to Brian through Angie's List, I got a call back from him the same day. Communication and responsiveness from Brian and his assistant was always excellent. We knew attempting to get a front door replaced during winter and around holidays would be a challenge. Where some handymen either didn't respond or said "call us back in the spring," Brian was willing to take the job on as soon as there would be day with mild weather and a safe working environment. This was important to us because the original door had a few problems, including being poorly sealed from the elements. As soon as a good day looked to be available, Brian and a crew of two showed up on time and got started with the work. We have an older home and a storm door, so the work wasn't a simple swap out -- there was quite a bit of work to do. Additionally, some fitment challenges arose, but that didn't slow Brian down as he knew how to work around it and make the new, pre-hung door fit securely. I watched the crew work off and on throughout the day and they didn't mess around -- it was clear they knew how to get the job done. There were no surprise costs to the job. I've had jobs installing carpet and tile in homes so I know there's another important task and that's cleanup. Brian and his crew also put in a solid effort to clean up the workspace, even cleaning the storm door windows. These are things I pay attention to. After everything was completed, we now have a very nice looking new front door that is properly sealed, opens and closes smoothly, and is much more secure than the old worn out door and frame.
Description of Work: Brian and his crew replaced our front entry door with a new pre-hung door, which required removing and reinstalling a storm door as well. Inside door casing was replaced as well.

Thanks for the Review! These days - customers have a powerful tool at their disposal - the Review. For years, I felt sorry for customers that had no idea what they were in for. Folks would hire a contractor thinking that they'd get a quality job for their money. Since I worked in small towns on the East Coast - I'd know what they were in for - when I found out the contractor they hired. I guess it's similar to when I travel and end up in a Restaurant that we hope serves good food - only to be disappointed. The main difference is the money involved. These days we always check the reviews before we choose a place to eat - that doesn't assure success - but it does give us a better idea of what we're getting into. I'd recommend taking the same approach to finding a good contractor. I chat with folks that mention they're getting a quote from one of the Big Box stores. I ask if they've checked out their reviews online. I know the answer before I ask the question - because they would not ask these companies to quote their job - after reading dozens of horror stories past customers post. Don't get yourself in a Pickle - Use the amazing tool Angieslist has provided and get to Work! Uncle Brian

Just FYI - Uncle Brian's Home Improvements responded to my email request for a bid to do a bathroom remodel in Boulder and they responded (same day) saying they "don't service Boulder." I feel it's a bit misleading when they come up as first in the list on Angie's list. I'd suggest that the Angie's List info include areas that are serviced.

Thank you for your Review and your suggestion. We have had several folks review us with low grades after we responded to their request for an estimate in like kind. We would also like to see Angies List remove us from searches in areas we don't service. Some people jump to the conclusion that their project is too small - and that we don't want to help them for that reason. We aren't in business to disappoint folks - but we also will always tell it like it is. Over promising is common in the Home Remodeling Industry - and is something that we won't do. 2016 is [Member Information Removed] out to be another busy year - I'd suggest people be patient when it comes to hiring a contractor to remodel their home. Making quick decisions is usually an asset in this process, but many people move too quickly and some end up very frustrated with the experience. Deciding on a contractor to perform a large project can be a tricky endeavor, I recommend folks do their homework before making that decision. That includes visiting a job site / calling a few recent customers to ask questions / and checking their reviews online. I've spoken to many folks who did their homework on a particular contractor only after they experienced problems, this sadly, is usually too late in the process. Happy Remodeling Uncle Brian and Co.

Thank you for your kind review!! It was a pleasure dealing with your family - I must thank [Member Name Removed] and her husband for their graciousness and patience during their kitchen remodel. Let's face it - Remodeling can be stressful. [Member Name Removed] and her family laughed and enjoyed the process which takes a lot of pressure off me. This allows me to be free to do my finest work, AND they are now the proud owners of a showroom kitchen. I've worked on this particular street numerous times and at last count we've remodeled 3 kitchens and 2 bathrooms - with 2 more bathrooms scheduled for next Spring. A quick story - this was an unusual project for us because I never gave [Member Name Removed] a formal bid - I told her what a similar kitchen 3 doors down from her [Member Information Removed] the year before and I told her if she remodeled hers in similar fashion - she could expect a similar price tag. She added a number of extras compared to her neighbor - so her numbers were larger by several thousand dollars. I can tell if I've done right by a customer in their estimation by how they treat us after their final invoice is tallied and presented. It's important to me to give my clients their money's worth because that's what I want for myself and my family, Let's be real - we're in business to make a living - but we never attempt to put one over on any client. I'd never allow that - unfortunately, many businesses don't share that sentiment these days. We charge a fair price for an honest days' work and leave the vast majority of folks as new found friends. I make it a point to [Member Information Removed] each project with respect and a smile. When we decide to work with someone to redo their space - the relationship really only works well with good communication / a good sense of humor / lots of patience ( our average kitchen project takes 45 days - [Member Information Removed] to finish) and mutual respect. If we hit a snag or problem on a job and I am worried about dealing with my clients anger/frustration - I certainly can't concentrate on the issue at hand. I'm glad this project was all smooth sailing and clear skies - but some do get a bit more intense. I was happy to hear that [Member Name Removed] wanted us back next Spring to renovate the 2 bathrooms in her home. That's my assurance that we did right by her family. Have a Blessed Week Uncle Brian (and now Grandpa too)

The project was huge, remodel the master bedroom suite. This included a new master bath, adding more lights to the master bedroom, a new hall closet and building a custom closet organizer system in my walk in closet, patching walls and ceilings where the plummer cut into them to repair leaking pipes. Brian was easy to communicate with, he listened to my wants and help me make good decisions about what materials to purchase. This included a shopping trip to Lowe's to pick out the new vanity, mirror and wall and floor tiles. Brian kept the cost in mind and worked with my budget. I am very pleased with the final look and the bathroom will last as long as I stay in this house. The whole project was done in the three weeks that Brian estimated, even with the added project of replacing the light fixture over the stair well. I have scheduled Uncle Brian's Home Improvement to return in November to remodel my guest bathroom. Brian does great work and I will be using his company again.

I started using Uncle Brian to finish the base and door trim, flooring, and other miscellaneous carpentry work. I was so happy with the work I hired them again to come back to tear down and rebuild my deck. Ray is great! I'm not very creative, and he is always helping to point me in the right direction. They have been very efficient and are very honest. In addition, Ray keeps an eye on my pets and lets my dog hang outside with him in the yard while he works. My dog loves him. I plan on continuing to use Uncle Brian and Ray as I continue to remodel parts of my house. So glad I found them!

Thanks for your Kind Words! So sad to report that Ray lost his 30 year old daughter a few weeks ago and has recently moved out of [Member Information Removed] to be closer to family. He'll be greatly missed by UBHI and more than a few clients because of his good nature and skilled hands. I hope Ray can move back to the Denver area one day - but for now - that's Life. It teaches me an important lesson on my own priorities - sometimes a scratched cabinet door can seem like the end of the world - until something like this happens. Well you know what I mean. We contracted Brian and his team to perform a master bath remodel. The bathroom had not been updated since the house was originally built (mid 1990s) and all the fixtures were outdated in addition to having a carpet floor. Although we had to wait 6 months for Brian to be available to perform the work - it was well worth the wait! Brian treated our home like his own - all of his team were very respectful and considerate. They would clean up the house every day after their work and would always ask before turning off the water or doing something that would impact us. He was extremely patient and always willing to go the extra mile - this was our first interior remodeling job, and we were unfamiliar with the sheer number of decisions (big or small) that go with such a job. He was willing to run out to get mosaic tiles a few nights when the weather was poor just so that we could find something we really wanted. He would offer suggestions, but always deferred to us as the customer once we made a decision (sadly, not something all contractors will do!) He would also tell us if there was a piece of work he was uncomfortable performing (such as replacing the shower floor with mosaic tile), and didn't hesitate to tell us when he would recommend using someone else for such a job. And he would notice things (such as a small hole in our wall in another location and the house) and would offer to take care of it for us if we would like to have him do so - this occurred on more than one occasion, and was so thoughtful! Our home is very important to us, and we're very glad that we chose Brian for this work. We were so pleased that we're having him perform a second bathroom remodel this summer. If it is important to you to have someone treat a job as if they were the client, I would highly recommend Brian.

Thank you for your kind Review! We worked for this nice Family last year and as they mentioned we remodeled the Master bathroom and the Guest bathroom in their lovely home. The projects involved tiling 2 shower floors - something I don't have enough experience doing. So we brought in a fellow who specializes in tiled shower floors and we worked together to get the job done. Both Bathroom projects turned out beautifully! I say that to boast about how well my customers selected their materials! A Commercial was filmed inside the Master Bathroom just after it was finished - so that gives you the idea that it was a Master bathroom masterpiece. The Guest bathroom was also a thing of Beauty when completed. I enjoy building Bathrooms that my clients design even though they often challenge and push my 34 years of remodeling to their Limits. When I feel I'm not able to pull off a certain aspect of a project well - I won't hesitate to ask for assistance. I've spoken to many contractors over the decades and often marvel on how many will claim they do everything. That may be true, but I'd question if they do aspects of the trades well? Our Best wishes are with all the good folks on Angies List Enjoy the Summer! Uncle Brian

Uncle Brian and his crew were very responsive and professional. They offered a lot of suggestions on how to reduce costs and improve the long term reliability of the bathrooms. They had great ideas on locations to purchase materials, and did a great job installing. During construction, they found several issues caused by the previous homeowners and the original construction which were all repaired. They were flexible in terms of timing and did their best to have a low impact on our house, cleaning up every night and working with our schedule. We had a few issues, which they came back after the project to resolve at no extra charge. They were always easy to get a hold of and always showed up when they said. We're very happy with their work and would recommend them to anyone. While not the cheapest option, the quality and thoroughness of the work is worth the extra.

We first used Uncle Brian's for a small project, and were very happy with the attention to detail, professionalism, and honesty, so we hired them to do a bathroom remodel. Brian helped with material selection and also with suggestions of ways to do things differently than what we were thinking - he definitely had a better 'vision' of our bathroom than we did. There were many time were he had a suggestion that we were extremely happy that we went with what he suggested, rather than what we had originally thought would be a good idea. Brian and his guys (his nephew Josiah was the plumber and Jeremiah was his apprentice) are extremely polite, respectful, and friendly. I felt completely comfortable leaving them in my house with my wife and daughter all day when I was at work. They worked hard and didn't cut any corners. We came across unforseen plumbing issues, and they were upfront about the cost of the fixes and why things needed to be done. We were extremely happy with the end result. We thought the price was high when Brian quoted it, but after seeing how much time they put into it and everything they had to do, we thought the price was reasonable.

Thank you for your Review! We worked for this nice family remodeling their worn out bathroom. This one like most was a real challenge. When I estimate a project, I consider the time it will take to do the remodel properly. I don't take the shortcut route because it never pays off. A quality job will [Member Information Removed] a rush job by at least 3 to 1. That means the [Member Information Removed] is likely higher for the rush job due to frequent redos. It's not uncommon for us to remodel bathrooms that are less than 20 years old - in fact we've renovated lots of bathrooms that are less than 10 years old! I always marvel at the bathroom that is 60 years old and [Member Information Removed] functioning beautifully. I respect the workmanship and take my hat off to the craftsman that built a bathroom that [Member Information Removed] for many decades. These well built bathrooms will often [Member Information Removed] their look - which is to say - that the appearance and colors used fall out of [Member Information Removed] even though the functionality remains fully intact. I appreciate when folks want quality work and are willing to be patient and allow us to deliver it to them. I had an old box window in my kitchen that had been leaking for many years and it was overdue for a replacement. After researching many companies I decided to go with Uncle Brian's Home Improvements to complete the work on this job. Brian came out and gave me some suggestions for different types of windows and information as to why the window was leaking. I decided to go with a new bay window. I was pleased with the window and very impressed with the craftsmanship. I thought it might take a day or so to complete the job but Ray was here for approximately 4 days. There was a lot more work to it than I realized. I am a very picky person and I have to say, every little detail was taken to ensure a good outcome. Ray went above and beyond in replacing some of the drywall that had water damage. I am planning on using this company again in the future.

I received a response the same day that I contacted Brian. Our home is over 60 years old and everything in the kitchen was original (walls, cabinets, floors, lighting ,etc). The plan was to gut the kitchen and the adjoining stairwell, open the walls between the family room and the kitchen and make half walls around the stairwell to create an open concept between the kitchen, family room, dining room, and office. Brian provided an estimate based upon my rendering and explanation, offered suggestions to tweak the design and materials, and gave a date he would be able to begin the work which would be in a couple of months. Brian came to the house a few times before the work was to begin to discuss materials, test for lead, etc. He was always available to talk to when questions or ideas came up. The work began when he said it would. He explained how the process would work and continued to keep us informed along the way. The project was projected to take 12 weeks. Due to some unforeseen issues with gas lines and electrical, as well as city inspection requirements, the project was completed in 16 weeks. The labor estimate came in right about where he stated, with the exception of some additional electrical and plumbing work that was required by the city. Brian's team was always respectful of us and our home, they were always willing to work with us when we had changes, and they cleaned up at the end of each work day. We felt comfortable leaving Brian and his team with a key to our home and alone in the house to work and they lived up to our trust. This project involved gutting old plaster walls and ceilings, It was messy and we lived in the house through the work. It wasn't easy, but Brian and his team made it much easier than it might have been. He also reframed our back door and did a few other nice little tweaks that were not in the scope of the project for no charge - just because he wanted it to look as nice as the rest of his work. We are very pleased with the results. The change to our home is and quot;stunningand quot; in the words of one of our friends. We will definitely use Brian and his team when we are ready to do another project. I've attached some B4 and After photos so you can see for yourself.

I called to see about getting a replacement for my sliding glass door. I spoke directly with a female in the office. Before I could explain why I was calling, she was screening my call to see how far away I lived. She told me I wasn't in their service area, as indicated by the map on Angie's list. I informed her there was no map! She then proceeded to tell me that there was and argued with me. She then had to mention that they were booked out to the fall. She then said she wanted me to speak to the owner, who was not available. My time is valuable,so I declined. I suggested that she not list herself on Angie's list if she does not detail the service area.

This was a huge job, and it went very well. The intent was to demolish our master bathroom and start from scratch. Brian and his crew turned this into reality. My wife and I knew we would need the advice of someone and acirc;??in the businessand acirc;?? and we had a good feeling about Brian the first time we met. A lot of the success of this project was due to Brianand acirc;??s advice before we ever approved the job. We had our list of and acirc;??must-haveand acirc;??sand acirc;?? and Brian made sure we got what we wanted and made sure we avoided any bad decisions along the way. Numerous things came up during the project and Brian did these for and acirc;??parts cost, and acirc;?? including building a complete (from scratch) closet organizer. Moving the wall gave us the opportunity to and acirc;??soundproofand acirc;?? the bathroom from the bedroom (Brianand acirc;??s idea and acirc;?? we would have never thought of it!). This meant adding insulation to the wall before the drywall was installed and using a solid door. It works! These are things that are cheap to do now, but almost impossible later. The project started with meeting Brian and banging heads on some ideas and acirc;?? this really didnand acirc;??t take much more than an hour. He was happy to accommodate what we had in mind, and we liked his ideas of borrowing space from a closet and a custom medicine cabinet (both turned out perfectly; reconfiguring things required moving an interior wall). Over the next week or two we approved the quote and decided on some more of the details. We also went on a massive shopping trip to Loweand acirc;??s to pick out all of the new stuff and acirc;?? everything from lighting to toilet (that was fun and Brian took care of the logistics of getting it all to the house). Brian and his crew worked here for 2 weeks, taking only Sundays off. For almost half that time, we were out of the country and managed the project with Brian via text mail (this was one of the first things we discussed). He sent us pictures of the progress and the job was finished the day before we got back. Communications was never a problem and acirc;?? we always knew what was going on and what would happen tomorrow. Most of the time, it was Brian and John but the specialists were in and out for plumbing, electrical, framing, etc. Hard working guys, and Brian managed it all. I should mention that we and acirc;??moved outand acirc;?? of our bedroom and let them take that part of the house over (bedroom and bathroom). They also had half of our garage. Projects like this require a lot of tools, and theyand acirc;??re dealing with a lot of 4x8 foot sheets of stuff that has to be cut. No requirement to set up or tear down every day helped a lot, I think, but they always kept things clean and acirc;?? swept the garage every day. This was during the first week in February when it never got above zero and acirc;?? they were even shoveling snow here. If I had this to do again, Iand acirc;??d probably give them the whole garage. Long and short? We would have no problems bringing Uncle Brian back here (and probably will). The job wasnand acirc;??t inexpensive, but we love the results. The original quote was $8,900 to $9,500 for labor and all materials extra. Materials came in at about $5,300 and the labor was at the low end ($8,900).

Thanks for your Review!! I wish I responded to this review sooner but I am grateful [Member Name Removed] included so much detail about his project. This was not your typical project for us because - because of the inclement weather that winter - we had a break in our usually packed schedule and I was able to squeeeeze this bathroom project in between other projects and get to it quickly. I'm so glad we were able to help this nice family out - because they really appreciated all of our efforts. Let me tell you - that's really a nice treat. I'm sometimes bewildered about how our culture heaps praise upon someone who can carry a tune but barely recognizes a hard working blue collar guy . I hope this trend changes sometime soon - it's certainly one of the reasons we find a shortage of these types of skilled workers these days. I'd recommend you go outside the next time the fellow who mows the lawn does an especially nice job and thank him. You just might make his day. Uncle Brian

I generally liked the workers and felt they were very helpful. They worked really hard, and diligently worked the job until it was finished, including working on New Yearand acirc;??s Day. Uncle Brian and the workers had very good ideas that I hadnand acirc;??t thought about that saved me money, which I really appreciated. But we had a few disappointing problems: 1) punched a hole in my living room wall (they patched the hole, but didnand acirc;??t restore the wall to previous condition and acirc;?? now I have to); 2) scratched hardwood floor in dining room when they moved washer and dryer; 3) switched hoses when they hooked up the washer (resulting in shrinkage of a full load of work clothes washed on and acirc;??hotand acirc;?? before I knew hoses were switched) and acirc;?? they came back and fixed the hoses (but now I have to replace those work clothes); 4) disconnected my cable wire when they cleaned up some wiring for me ($50 to get Comcast to reconnect). 5) they finished the molding/baseboards in some areas, but not all areas and acirc;?? I had to finish up the baseboards myself under kitchen cabinets and a wall in the new closet.I didnand acirc;??t realize painting was not included in the finish (although it was not listed on the bid). I hadnand acirc;??t planned to do a lot of finish work myself, so that was disappointing. (Cost me an additional $400 to texturize and paint the wall, and paint the closet doors, and shelving they built). This may be more my fault for not having discussed it at the outset.Overall, I'm happy with the finished job, but not with the amount of work I ended up having to do myself at the end.
Description of Work: They knocked out a wall in my kitchen, built a water heater closet and pantry, tore up tile flooring, installed electrical outlets and a light fixture, and cleaned up some excess wiring I had hanging all over the place.

Response from Uncle Brian's Home Improvements
Thanks for your review. There are a number of issues I'd like to address in this response. First, we've modified our estimate to enlarge the words "painting and texturing not included". This is the first time we've had this misunderstanding with a client so - it's a good opportunity to do what we can to avoid future problems. We don't offer painting and texturing for several reasons 1) We don't have the skill set to match the many varied textures in our customers' homes. In fact, we've hired at least 8 different companies who specialize in applying texture and only a few perform to a level that satisfies us. 2) We don't paint because our rates are higher than most painters and we believe our customers are better served by dealing with a company that specializes in painting, at painters' rate. We've decided to stop offering a second team at out small company - we don't want to disappoint our customers and we've noticed an increase of problems when Uncle Brian is not on site. So we'll go back to our tried and proven method. We'll apologize now for not being able to get to everyone that wants an estimate or some friendly advice. We do help dozens of nice folks every year with their remodeling projects - but we get many more requests than we can handle. If you're willing to be patient, you'll get your turn and we aim to please the people who've put their confidence and trust in us. I see many folks in too much of a hurry when it comes to home remodeling. In my opinion, home improvement is like growing vegetables. If you try to rush it, it just won't work. Take your time - do your research - choose wisely and then get down to business. Lastly, concerning the washing machine issue of the hot and cold lines being switched: By code, the hot water lines should be on the left side. It's rare, but from time to time, we see the water line reversed (hot on the right and cold on the left). We sent one of our guys back at no charge to figure out the washing machine issue. It was determined that the lines at the washing machine were reversed, so he crisscrossed the supply lines. We've since made it our policy to run all plumbing appliances (dishwasher/fridge/washing machine) to check for similar issues. I now will label the water lines that are reversed "cold" and "hot" to avoid future problems. Finally, if I could make a difference in the remodeling business it would definitely be to stop the high incidence of folks having a bad experience with their improvement projects. Uncle Brian's chooses to be part of the solution in this area. We have a very high success rate with folks we work for - in fact our "F" grades have all been from folks we've not worked for. Sad stories are an ever-present, part of the industry. I believe many of the hundreds of "tales of woe" I've heard over the years could have been avoided by doing a little research concerning the company you're about to hire - Angie's List makes this much easier - and not being in a big rush. Uncle Brian

He purchased doors that were too large so that when his carpenter arrived announced he wouldn't be able to install that day so he could cut down the doors. When he did complete the job at a later date I was pleased with the results. Brian should have personally inspected the job site beforehand. I received no apology from him.
