I drove about an hour (each way for a total of 2 hours) to The Tree Farm to purchase a tree that I was told would cost about $450. I took my 18 lb. dog with me as I am elderly and disabled and find her to be a great comfort. When i arrived at The Tree Farm I was told I could not go view the trees with my dog even though we would be outside all of the time. They told me that their position on dogs is posted on their website. It is not (and I had viewed their website before driving) and they now admit that it is not on their website. Most companies would try to make an accomodation for a customer who unwittingly violated their unspoken rule (and all other nurseries I have been to allow well-behaved dogs which mine is) but not The Tree Farm. They are extremely rude, apparently do not like dogs, and I will be taking my business elsewhere.

First, the purchase process. Over several visits, I chose 20 trees and 30 shrubs for our newly constructed home. Each time I was driven through the facility by one of the staff who helped to find and select the items. I worked with Colleen several times but also with a couple of others who were quite helpful. We had rain on a couple of trips, but we eventually got it done. In each case, I feel that I was able to find high quality plant material that will hopefully meet our needs for years to come. I ultimately decided to have the Tree Farm do the install because I figured that since the did this all the time, they would have the best chance to get it right. Next came the installation. This was an all day affair. It was originally scheduled for 3 weeks earlier but we had to delay because weather had caused us to not have the ground prepared. Our schedule change was accommodated without concern. The crew arrived on time and got to work. Each item was carefully planted, even in the areas where the clay was like concrete. Some of the holes were 4 ft wide and nearly 2 ft. deep. Each tree was checked for being vertical, and the larger ones were staked. By the time everything was watered, the crew had been on site for nearly 10 hours. Though the weather was mild, it was still a very long day.

We love them. They do an excellent job. They drive us around and show us whatever we are looking for. They wrap things professionally so they don't get damaged on the way home. They do a great job. They are not the nearest nursery to us by a long ways. They wrap all the branches. We really like their customer service and they have good, fair prices. They take pride in making sure their merchandise gets home to us in good condition and they have a guarantee on it. We would highly recommend them. They are not the cheapest but they do have good sales and we usually try to take advantage of those. We've never had a problem with anything we purchased there. We've never had an issue with them. We've gone there and they have not come to our home.

I will definitely shop at Tree Farm again, but not for juniper trees. And I will research first, avoiding plants that are plagued by too many diseases, and closely supervise their planting if it's too much to do myself. Sadly, Tree Farm's warranty is only 50% and only applies to replacements if stock dies the first year, so I will limit myself to less expensive and only Plant Selects (see plantselect.org). I feel if a nursery is selling high quality stock and either gives solid advice about planting and care, or refers to someone who can, a 100% guarantee should be given in the unlikely event that death occurs in the first year (at least for native plants and especially to frequent customers).
Description of Work: When I was shopping for a tall hedge on one side of my property to abate wind, Mike sold me on 44 welchi juniper trees which a landscaping company then planted. The trees looked great when I bought them at three- to four-feet tall, but have been unsightly for far too many years now. I'm not blaming Mike for this although he did advise me to shear them in order to maintain a columnar look which CSU extension service told me in no uncertain terms to stop doing. Fine with me; it was a hassle. Mike also said I could remove several feet off the tops which would result in denser, fuller growth although he concurred that the bare areas will never fill in. Again, others have strongly disagreed with this topping approach. It's entirely possible that the landscape company planted the junipers too deeply or that in a lame attempt to save them, I've overwatered. Either of these 'environmental problems' could have made them susceptible to the twig, branch, and berry death that occurs so frequently. On a positive note, Mike came out last week to look at the junipers. It's been close to eight years since he sold the trees to me, so I thought his drive from Longmont to Boulder was above and beyond. He noticed some sap and possible borer holes that I had overlooked in my unceasing attempts to diagnose what the heck keeps causing their needles to turn yellow, crispy, and droopy or recently go from green to reddish brown seems like overnight. Mike suggested triquarterly applications of a particular fungus spray that Tree Farm carries, but I hesitate to use chemicals without specific knowledge of the type of borer or fungus. I also worry about the effect chemicals might have on all the birds and little woodland creatures that depend on what's left of the trees for cover. Guess it's back to finding another tree doctor. (Finding a visiting horticulturist who doesn't try to instantly sell you some miracle concoction has been a whole other frustrating story that has nothing to do with Mike or Tree Farm.) Words to the wise: No matter how professional the nursery expert seems, steer clear of Rocky Mountain Junipers, Welch, or any other juniperus scopularum variety for that matter. In my experience, they are too needy and disease prone, not at all the carefree drought hardy trees I was told they'd be. (By the way, I have juniper horizontalis shrubs that are thriving in the same conditions as the sickly Juniper trees.) Oh yeah, and picking gooey jellyfish-like galls out of each of the trees after every rainy period is also daunting. Our neighbor has beautiful crapapple trees that spores from these galls can kill so I feel I have to catch them as soon as they appear. This is yet another thing Mike never mentioned to me about Rocky Mountain Junipers. But he also never claimed to be a horticulturist so I obviously expected too much. Irregardless, Mike's a nice guy and I appreciated his recent visit. Just wish I hadn't counted so much on an experienced nurseryman's opinion. If I ever make such a big investment on plants again, I will research first and save myself years of trials and tribulations.

My only issue with the contractor was that the cre (2 people) arrived - nocked on the door to inform me they were there, and to ensure I did not have any pets in the backyard. They did the work - but left without any opportunity to: 1) review the work 2) ask questions or request additional small trims Other than that - I would use them again (I plan to next fall for sure!)

The Tree Farm has so many trees, I was worried that I would spend the better part of a day looking for the right type of trees to plant in my backyard. the process that The Tree Farm had was impressive. When I walked in the door, a worker asked how he could help me and then called someone to pick me up in a golf cart to help me look at trees. I told the person in the cart what I was looking for and she knew exactly what types of trees to show me. She was friendly and asked me many questions to make sure she found exactly what I wanted. This only took about 20 minutes but I was definitely not rushed. They gave me an estimate. I went home to look at the space in my yard that needed trees to make sure that these trees would fit my needs. Returned about a week later to choose the exact trees that I wanted. Gary met me in a golf cart to take me out to make my selection. I wanted to look at another type of tree to assure myself that I was buying the right tree. Gary was happy to show me more trees and again he offered his advice on what trees would work best for my needs. He choose the 5 trees that looked health and beautiful. Less than a week later four workers brought the trees out and planted them with great care. They arrived on time, made sure that the tree placement was exactly where I wanted them, and cleaned up after themselves. They left products and instructions for me on how to care for the trees. This is a very professional business that really knows trees and how to help their customers select the best fit. I will use them again.

Our interaction with the Tree Farm went smoothly from start to finish.
Description of Work: I have used The Tree Farm for my landscaping and gardening needs for many years. All of the help I have received from them has been excellent. This review is specifically for having trees put in our yard in August of 2010. Linda at the Tree Farm helped us pick out the best trees for our needs and our yard. We looked at many different trees and she is a master of information on all the different planting and growing requirements of zillions of plants and trees. After we picked out the trees, she advised us the best supplements to use to prepare the ground, and added those to our order. She helped us pick the proper location in our yard for each tree. We scheduled a time for delivery and planting of the trees. On the scheduled morning, 3 men arrived on time and promptly planted all the trees. Each tree was given the propter rooting and fertilizer supplements, and was staked, and the trunks were wrapped in preparation for the fall and winter. We were given information on how to best care for our new trees. Now, almost a year later, our trees are beautiful, healthy, and growing well. I have received good advice every time I shop at the Tree Farm. The quality of plants, shrubs, and trees is excellent. The variety is amazing. The best part of shopping there is knowing that you will get the best advice possible. If you have questions or concerns after your purchase, they are happy to help you. Knowing that you are getting the best plant materials for this area of Colorado is so important for the success of your landscaping. You know the cost will be reflected in a beautiful, healthy yard and garden. For approximately the same amount of money you might spend at a big box store, go to The Tree Farm where you will receive help, knowledge, and most importantly, healthy plants and trees grown here for this area.

The workers arrived at the scheduled time. We gave instructions on exactly where we wanted everything planted. It was a large job because the tree was in a very large pot. After I gave the instructions, they went to work. There were 4 men doing the work, including a supervisor. After my instructions, they didn't ask any questions and it was apparent that they fully paid attention to and understood my instructions because they planted exactly where I had told them. In addition, what a wonderful surprise-they went above and beyond. The bushes were planted on a hill. Because of the slope of the hill, the workers did some actual landscaping by leveling off the part of the hill where they planted the bushes. The resulting effect looked like something a professional landscaper would do. It was beautiful and better than I had pictured what it would look like. I highly recommend The Tree Farm. Since then, we have done a lot of business there and every time they plant something for us, it is professionally done. Also, let me tell you that they plant trees absolutely straight up and down. We had to use another landscaper once due to the contract we had on our house and that landscaper planted a tree at a slight angle. It didn't look good and that's not how a tree is supposed to be planted. I have watched the planters at The Tree Farm and they walk around and view the tree at all angles before they do the final dirt filling to make sure it is straight.
Description of Work: At The Tree Farm, we selected 4 tall hedge bushes and a large tree and scheduled a time for The Tree Farm to deliver and plant all of them at our house.
