The Little Green Cleaners

I had the owner of the company come to my home to give me a written price on what it would cost to do a one time deep clean of my home. We were putting it on the market to sell. She came out and told me that she would charge me $400 and that would give me the hours of 9am to 2pm (5 hours of cleaning by two of her full time cleaners plus two new hires that were training). She even said that I would probably get money back because she tends to over-estimate the jobs. We closed on our town home on Jan 16 and she came out on Jan 22. The house was in better shape than when she saw it because without all the boxes around we were able to do some cleaning ourselves. In any event I get a phone call at 10am that two of her people called in sick (I don't know if they were the trainers or the full timers who called in, but she ended up showing up with two ladies and the three of them were going to do the job. She them proceeded to tell me that it would cost me an additional $150 because she under-estimated how much it would take to clean. This is someone who has been in business a very long time, she doesn't under estimate! I think what happened is that her cheaper labor (the trainees called in sick) and she had to work the job because she didn't have anyone else to call in. So going from 4 people to 3 she ended up working until 5pm but that wasn't my fault and for her to tell me that my house was dirtier than she thought, instead of being honest that she was down one person and that as the owner her time was more expensive, and she also knew the carpet cleaners were coming the next day and the house went on the market the day after that. There was no way I could find someone else on such short notice and I think she took advantage of that. She didn't do some of the cleaning that she said she would like the garage door opener pads. However, she did do an excellent job of cleaning overall. So do I give her a 5 for cleaning and a 1 for costumer service? I don't like being manipulated and frankly she lost my business because I was going to have her clean my new place biweekly. But I can't work with someone I don't trust. So my advice, if you use her get the price firmly in writing (which I did) AND give yourself a few days cushion in case she tried to over charge you and find someone else. I could have taken her to small claims court, but frankly, with all that was going on in my life at the time (I had knee surgery three weeks later) and a closing on my house a week after that, it just wasn't worth the stress for the $150. It's the principal of the thing. What is the point of getting a contract in writing with a firm price just to have a bait and switch happen because of problems at her end?

The ladies were friendly yet professional and worked quickly and efficiently the whole time they were here. I was amazed at what they were able to accomplish in the short time available to them and on such short notice. I would highly recommend them.
