We hired AAA to do a total renovation on our house, a 1960's ranch. We signed the contract in March of 2011. The first thing they did was have the roll-off dumpster put in the driveway of the wrong house blocking our cars in! It took 8 hours to correct. Next they did the demo of the upstairs of the house fairly quickly. After that, it took nearly 3 months before they started to truly make any progress. I stopped by day after day and there was no one there. The excuses I got were: "we are too busy" or "we are waiting on permits" etc. Finally, as worked progressed, the "project manager" for our job was fired and replaced at least 3 times! It became clear how horribly managed this group was. The sub contractors and AAA were virtually never on the same page or gave the same answer to any question we had. Anytime something would go wrong, AAA would blame the contractors and vice versa. If not for my CONSTANT oversight and daily hammering on AAA, I do not believe this project would have been completed. Examples: I specifically asked that the new swamp cooler be installed over the walk-in closest and NOT over the baby room. I made this extremely clear. I show up one day and the thing was almost completely installed over the baby room! They all pointed fingers at each other. With a hole in the roof and all the ventilation in place, they finally talked me into accepting it. Big mistake. Now that room has baby twins living in it and the swamp cooler is loud enough to wake them. Another example: they installed brand new storm windows throughout the house. The caulking looked as if it had been done by 5 year old children. There has been cracking around the windows constantly ever since installation. Complete disaster. I ended up having a major dispute with AAA about this issue. Some of the "subs" AAA hired were SKETCHY. This one guy showed up one day, wreaked of alcohol and had clearly been beaten by someone pretty bad. I asked what the deal was and he said "I had a fist fight with my girlfriend last night....". I had to ask him to leave. I could go on and on about the project and lack of professionalism but I want to explain what happened with AAA's owner, Toby Hertel, at the end of the ordeal. As the project neared completion, he insisted on final payment BEFORE all the work was done and BEFORE I was completely satisfied. I refused to pay until I was completely satisfied as I assume most people would do. We had already paid well over $200,000 for this renovation and owed less than $15,000. Yet he insisted on payment despite the fact that the work was not completed to our satisfaction. I finally had to threaten to call Tom Martino's Trouble Shooters Network (remember them?) which AAA was part of back then. Finally, after another needless delay lasting weeks, Toby capitulated, finished the work and I paid him. Most recently, one of the vanity sinks that AAA installed in 2011 suddenly fell out and landed in the cabinet below. So, I emailed AAA's owner, Toby Hertel. He wrote back and admitted that it was very unusual for this to happen, he admitted that he had to fire the guy that put it in AND he said "it is an easy fix". But then he said he would not fix it free of charge because "I was not a happy customer".....??? I ended up spending $300 to fix it. The stone fabricator that fixed it said: there were no clips/fasteners holding the sink to the granite, the granite had not been properly cleaned before the sink was installed, there was NO caulking done at all and they used the wrong type of adhesive to attach the sink in the first place. He said we were lucky the sink held up as long as it did. (BTW, I found the stone fabricator on Angies List!) Bottom line: I would NEVER hire AAA Home Improvements again nor recommend them to anyone. I agree with other posts on Angies List about AAA. When it comes to getting paid, AAA is VERY PROMPT! There is a reason why companies like AAA do not have good marks on Angies List and it starts at the top!

Response from AAA HOME IMPROVEMENTS
Please note the following in response to Mr. [Member Name Removed]'s claims: - Note the frivolous post was completed 5 yrs after the work was complete as a result of sink adhesive releasing causing the sink to fall off several yrs after it was installed. We had offered to assess and repair the sink under a standard service call as our warranty doesn't provide blanket coverage several years after work has been completed - AAA had successfully completed over 4 separate projects for this individual over a 5 yr span at more than one property prior to this complaint. - The final project referenced was completed as two consecutive remodel projects with desire to have us complete a deck project potentially a roof project at the completion of the other two pending finances. We were later advised by Mr. [Member Name Removed] that unexpected taxes debt would not allow these two projects to proceed consecutively as initially hoped. This was ultimately the same time we noticed resistance to pay current invoices as well. - AAA refused to do the deck project as it needed a permit at the final stages of the above mentioned two projects. Mr. [Member Name Removed] was the current and active County Commissioner of the governing jurisdiction of his property, yet refused to get a permit after we notified him that it was in a flood plain thus resulting in an increase in construction costs included in our submitted proposal. AAA didn't feel comfortable engaging in another contract with a Commissioner wanting work to be completed at his own property with complete disregard to the public position he chaired. - Needless to say after this transpired Mr. [Member Name Removed]'s tone/demeanor completely changed and promptly elevated to a posturing position of how not to pay for invoices that were grossly past due. - Given all previous contracts with Mr. [Member Name Removed] AAA Home Improvements require a standardized substantial completion walk-through (a list that documents all items remaining to be complete that is signed by both parties before and after they are satisfactory and complete) as it has been a common practice to complete a punch-list as provided by Mr. [Member Name Removed] then when the list is complete an entirely new one would appear. - Once we requested this walk through Mr. [Member Name Removed] refused to participate as he was advised that this is a way "contractors like you get out of their commitments". - We then started receiving threats of attacking our professional business image such as this frivolous post. - The $15,000.00 as referenced by Mr. [Member Name Removed] was in the collection process for several months for 6 items on a combined $200,000 plus project: 1. Caulking touch up on exterior windows. 2. Inside caulking around vinyl windows that had been installed over 8 months prior to becoming a punch-list item now needing touch up due to the expansive properties commonly found around products that expand and contract in varying temperature conditions. 3. Dining room mantle needed paint/caulking touch up. 4. Mr. [Member Name Removed] was to provide the hood for the kitchen stove and accessories. The hood was installed yet Mr. [Member Name Removed] couldn't believe the cost for the needed trim so didn't provide this at time of install. After many months went by he purchased the remaining piece of trim and added it to the punch-list as it was an outstanding item. 5. After moving in to the house they realized that they wanted an HDMI cable added to the bedroom of which was not in the contract yet became an item that had to be completed prior to final payment. 6. Long after a final walk through was completed for a closet area in the basement Mr. [Member Name Removed] wanted an additional outlet and again demanded this to be completed before final payment. In summary: Do your research before you ever sign a contract. We have been doing business for 14 yrs and Mr. [Member Name Removed] posted 1 of 2 complaints you as a consumer will find on our company of any relevance. We have had 2 minor filed complaints with the BBB in 14 yrs and we are not trying to hide anything. We as a company pride ourselves in completing every project in attempt to satisfy "every customer" yet in 14 yrs it doesn't seem to unreasonable to have less than a handful of clients that have the desire to post a negative complaint.

The initial work was done without any complaints, however 1 year and 4 months after a large section of the sidewalk started disintegrating. They told me since it was 4 months after the one year warranty they would not completely repour the section. They said it was not the fault of the company and the cement was of good quality. The were other sections of the sidewalk that were perfectly fine. They agreed only to reseal the area by resurfacing it. After 3 months of emails they finally came to resurface the affected areas. Since the contract had an arbitration clause and would have been more hassle to try and take them to small claims I settled with the resurfacing, but they did not do a very good job. Time will tell how long this lasts. I would not recommend this company or trust the ownership.

The small concrete sidewalk in question was poured on the side of the house where it receives little sun thus would require a lot of shoveling or the need for a deicer. Do you research but if you apply salt on newly poured concrete it will cause it to spall. Please see link for more info. http://www.nylandmarks.org/programs_services/technical_assistance/projects/dont_salt_your_steps_winter_technical_tips/ At no cost to the client we resurfaced the spalling concrete after warranty had expired.

Ray gave me a ball park estimate for a total bathroom remodel, two week's later I called to get a total figure for the job, since I was going to select them to do it. I was told he was in the field and would call me, three day's later I recalled since he didn't call me, only to be told he will call me. It is now a week and still no call from him. I used your list since I'm fairly new to Colorado and don't know who to trust, well I now will not trust them. I just wanted to let you know as feed back about one of those on your list.
