Bruce Harris and his team work professionally and are tremendously skilled in this space. They completed our driveway in one day with excellent care to ensure accuracy and high-quality asphalt. They arrived precisely on time, clean-up was impeccable, and the cost was reasonable. Worth hiring the B & H Asphalt Paving.

After the first year, there was damage over the entire paved surface. The asphalt was not installed correctly. It was extremely porous, which was pointed out initially. All of the seams were very noticeable, and very unsightly. After the first rainfall, we noticed that the drive was not graded properly, and water pooled in front of the garage and the stairs to the front door. The response was that if we had it sealed the next year, it would be OK, and that driving on it would smooth it out. The next spring, they came out and laid asphalt on top of the low spots, using no equipment other than a shovel and a hand torch, and stomped on it with a metal shoe to level it. They then sprayed it with sealer, for an additional charge. The water continued to pool, and by the end of the next winter, all of the and quot;patch materialand quot; had crumbled away. The next spring, very large cracks began to appear all around the edges, and big chunks have broken off all around the edges. Then cracks began to appear in the center areas and at all of the seams. There are now many low spots where the surface has washed away, and cracks throughout the entire surface. As many of the cracks are now 1and quot; wide or more, it is also evident that some of the depth of the material is not the quoted depth of 3and quot;. The original low spots continue to deteriorate due to the standing water. Once the driveway was out of warranty, we thought we could live with it, though grudgingly. Now, as we watch the driveway totally self destruct, we realize we should have ignored Bruce's fast talking, and demanded that they handle this in the warranty time frame. My initial complaints with Bruce, which were made immediately when the job was first completed, and the following year when the and quot;repairand quot; was made, resulted in a lot of double talk, which made me feel as though I was wasting my time. It is very apparent that his work is performed to a standard barely good enough to last for the warranty period, and his fast talking will help keep the customer at bay until the warranty expires. Poor preparation and grading, unsightly seams, poor surfacing, and perhaps poorly trained installers, have left us with an unsightly, crumbling, water pooling mess in front of our home. Yes, the one year warranty is noted on the invoice, but poor workmanship should be covered any time it causes a problem. I paid for a quality product, and I did not receive it. An upstanding business owner should realize that if his company made a mistake they should take care of it. He is not an upstanding business owner, and now offers to repair this mess for a charge. Not a chance, I wouldn't allow them to perform any type of work on my property.
Description of Work: Graded the existing gravel driveway, and laid asphalt paving.

We had 3 companies quote the job. We live on a very rocky and somewhat steep mountainside. Bruce took his time to go over our situation and recommended the Hot Mix Asphalt. I was thinking recycled asphalt due to the steepness of drive and possible winter ice. (Some say recycled is rougher and not as slippery.) Bruce was willing to go either way but showed me the advantage and practicality of the better hot mix asphalt for our situation, pointing out that the county used hot mix asphalt. He was very knowledgable about winter conditions, drainage problems on a mountainside etc. and cost savings to us over the years. The other two companies seemed to be in a hurry compared to Bruce and gave estimates and not fixed quotes. Also they were going to bring in more dirt rather than fixing our road by grading what was there. Think this way is more stable and lasting. I don't remember other companies exact estimates but they were similar to Bruce's exact cost. The two other companies worried me that they would add extras. Mountain terrain always seems to bring surprises. I'm sure that our septic cover problem would have cost more with the other companies....and should have. They came the day and hour agreed upon. Again they did some extra work to make the drainage better around the septic tank covers that had been installed in our driveway by the septic company. We were very impressed by the crew's almost seamless ability to simultaneously work all the areas of our driveway and parking area. They are an amazing, competent, and polite crew. They worked so quickly and kept bringing up new equipment that they owned (other little companies have to rent some of that equipment) to handle different parts of the job. Again great teamwork and fun to watch out the window. Grading, spraying for weeds, rolling, compacting and applying hot mix asphalt and rolling and compacting etc, finishing edges etc. Again teamwork. Bruce , the owner, had started work paving at age 16 and you can tell that he knows and loves his job. Think that he said that he is 38 now. Works the warm weather in Colorado and works the winters in Louisiana. The other companies had mentioned such a man and implied that he wasn't native and didn't know about our winters etc. Bruce has been working here since at least 2000 if I remember correctly and owns a house in the mountains. Here was a very hard working man who knows and loves the business and takes pride in his work. He has prospered by honest work and costs. Obviously he treats his employees well and they have worked for him for years. They did very well slanting our driveway for drainage problems. Our driveway runs into a private dirt road that we share with 2 other houses. Before paving our driveway intense rains down our driveway would always cause ruts and problems in the common dirt/rock road. Our neighbor came to watch and was pleased at how careful B and H was to address that situation. They even had a bit of excess asphalt that they worked into the meeting place of our driveway and the common private road to help the whole drainage problem on our shared private dirt/rock road. The price of $6000 was for 3,800 square feet of hot mix asphalt. (grading, compacting base with roller, laying 3 inches of hot mix asphalt, compacting asphalt, finishing edges (Tamp and Clean). B and H has a year guarantee on their work and want to come inspect it after 11 months to fix any little areas before sealing. The other companies did not mention a guarantee. I waited to write this review to see how our driveway did in the winter. Despite the steepness it is actually easier to drive up in the snow and ice than our irregular rock/dirt/stone driveway of before. Less slippage problem into ditch etc. Wish that we would have asphalted our driveway sooner. Again we very highly recommend Bruce and his crew.
Description of Work: Bruce from B & H Asphalt came and quoted our driveway. They came on the day scheduled. Our septic covers had been installed a bit too high by our Septic Service. B & H did more than their best to rectify the situation at no additional cost to us. Five men then worked together to grade, spray, and asphalt our mountain driveway. They owned an amazing array of equipment for the job. Finished in about 5 or 6 hours, much to our amazement.

It was a terrible experience. The day my driveway was installed in Oct 2012 it was cold with rain/snow, causing concern the weather could affect the quality of the finished product. But time is money and the driveway paving proceeded resulting in an unsatisfactory job. The slope of my driveway was critical for proper drainage, which I discussed thoroughly with Bruce Harris, the owner. He assured me they would grade my driveway to alleviate any drainage problems. Not only was my driveway not graded properly, water ran toward the garage and the driveway surface was not flat causing water to pool after storms. I contacted Bruce and he informed me that unless the pools were at least an inch deep he wouldn't do anything about it and assured me it was likely my imagination that the pools were deep--he's a bully!. But he came out promptly and found the puddles were an inch or more deep so agreed to repair it along with correcting the drainage. They hacked at the asphalt to cut some areas down and added more asphalt to build other areas up all with hand tools, which left the driveway like a patchwork mess and never fixed the problems. I complained the driveway wasn't fixed and now looked like a bigger mess--it was never a new black driveway, more like a grey/brown/black patchwork. They came out again and put tar over the uneven mess, which even they don't recommend for new driveways. Come Spring 2013 there are weeds growing through the driveway, parts of it are now disintegrating, there are several visible seams, along with drainage issues and puddling. Bruce had informed me the driveway was under a 1 year warranty, likely knowing there would be more problems. He has never fixed problems on his subsequent trips after paving, it was a bad paving job and an unpleasant person to deal with

I was right there present when they did the whole thing, watching them very closely. I continually cautioned them because they were supposed to be going 2.5 inches thick which would settle back down to 2 inches. They were going pretty skimpy on the height, so they actually had asphalt left over and paved an extra 30 or so feet. Other than that, the work went fine. They cleaned up after themselves, and everything looked good. Then, in the winter, I developed a crack in the driveway. I did not realize it because it was covered in snow. When the snow finally melted in the spring, I noticed a crack going across the driveway. There was a puddle on one side that I filled in. We then had a long hot summer and the crack almost disappeared. Then, on August 31, I noticed that there were multiple cracks. We really had not had any rain this summer. After the long drought and heat wave, multiple cracks appeared running longitudally (down) the driveway in the middle third of the driveway (the steeper section) lining up along the axis of the driveway. I promptly called Bruce (the owner) to tell him I had this problem. I had previously arranged for him to do some more paving, but they were going to wait until they had a bigger job because they were going to put some sealant down. At this time we only had one crack that needed sealant, and his son said they would take care of it when they put down the additional asphalt. I told him we would have to postpone until the next year. They were happy to cancel it out because it was a small job. When I called him back, he said they had no one in the area to look at it so he offered another year on the warranty. I'm sure he is acting in good faith that he will get another job out here, and most likely will have to come put some tar in them. In any case, we just had some more snow, and it is now melting, and many of the cracks show a little water seeeping up, so it appears that water is being trapped under the driveway. I suspect it is related to the fact that the asphalt in certain spots was so thin in certain places. I can't say that they are to be avoided, but on the other hand, his one year guarantee didn't mean diddly squat.
Description of Work: They installed a parking area and a driveway in September 2011. They offered a one year guarantee that they would fix any problems that might develop.
