MD Hardwood Flooring was recommended to me by my realtor and I'm so glad they were. MD was punctual, cost competitive, and did an outstanding job from start to finish. I was kept in the loop the entire time and my wife and I were both extremely pleased with the finished product. Our house looks like new... better than new. I would definitely hire MD again.

The bedrooms were done well, except that the baseboards were left off -- they were not replaced, and there was not a bid for new baseboards. The stair installation was poorly performed, and the sides of the stairs next to the walls were left totally incomplete -- there are gaps between the stairs and the walls, and there is no baseboard or other covering. In addition, the main person who performed the work was uncommunicative and surly -- it was scary to have him around. One day when he was leaving the premises, he actually ripped off some weatherstripping from the threshold of our front doors -- apparently it bothered him! We had to have it replaced at our expense. We have attempted several times to contact the owner, Matthew Dubbell, but he has not responded to emails or telephone calls. This is completely unacceptable behavior. MD Hardwood Flooring responded on 12/14/2010. Here is our reaction to the response: Basically the response is factually inaccurate -- perhaps Mr. Dubbell has us confused with a different customer. The job was not finishing somebody else's work. We previously had hardwood flooring installed in a hallway and a bedroom, but that work was done satisfactorily by a different contractor. MD Hardwood was selected for the remaining two bedrooms and the staircase because of their supposed expertise on staircases. The floors in the first bedroom and hallway were done at a different time because of ceiling and wall work required in the other two bedrooms prior to floor installation. We supplied the hardwood flooring because we had purchased it for all rooms at the same time in order for all the planks to match. We ordered the stair nosing at MD Hardwood's suggestion after consulting with them. When MD Hardwood finished the staircase, they told us that the only remaining work was to paint the skirt material they had installed on the stairs. We were concerned about the gap between the skirt material and the walls, but we were assured that the painter would take care of that. During the summer we had many outdoor projects to do, so we deferred the staircase painting. When we returned to the staircase painting in the fall, we had painters provide bids to us for painting the skirt material. They told us the skirt material had been installed improperly and could not simply be painted in the condition it was. They also questioned the design and quality of the skirt. We contacted MD hardwood in order to discuss the issue, but they refused to respond to our emails or phone calls. They have been totally uncommunicative until we filed this complaint. Regarding the baseboards, they were in fact removed before MD Hardwood's work. However, we expected to discuss them with MD Hardwood and possibly to have them replaced -- we had no idea that MD Hardwood does not do baseboards and considers them to be "trim carpentry" beyond the scope of their expertise -- if we had known that previously, we certainly would have contacted other contractors -- we expected that MD Hardwood would have something to say about the baseboards, as baseboards are a logical conclusion to replacement of flooring. We misunderstood the baseboard issue, but it certainly is only a minor element of our complaint -- our major issue is the staircase. Finally, MD Hardwood's response to our complaint does not address our comments about the individual who actually performed the work on our flooring. Those comments are also true, and we stand by them as we do our comments about the staircase.
Description of Work: MD Hardwood Flooring installed hardwood floors in two bedrooms and on a staircase, using Bruce pre-finished hardwood planks (this is real hardwood, not a laminate). We had purchased the wood, and MD merely had to install it.

Response from MD Hardwood Flooring LLC
In response to the above post...we originally bid this particular job one year prior to doing the work. We were asked to return and finish somebody else's job which was not completed due to lack of knowledge. (The other contractor did not know how to make a header board--a board that separates carpet, tile, vinyl from hardwood out of the supplied prefinished flooring). We were asked to install the supplied (which was purchased well before we bid the job the first time) wood on the stairs. In doing so, we needed stair nosing to match the supplied wood. We spoke with the homeowner about this, explained exactly what they needed to order from where THEY ordered the original wood from (stain, wood type, etc) and there did not seem to be any problem with this method at the time. We wrote up a pretty comprehensive estimate to finish the unfinished portion of the job and completed the work. Prior to receiving a check we did a walkthrough with the homeowner and addressed a few minor issues that she had. We received a check in March of 2010...In November (EIGHT months later), I received an irate phone call from said homeowner concerning "major" problems concerning some skirt material that we used, as per our estimate, on the sides of the stairs. What really concerned me, and is the reason for me not responding to said homeowner, is that she chose to call in two other contractors about our work, eight months after the fact, neither of whom are hardwood flooring contractors, yet claim to have the knowledge to point out imperfections in our work. This issue was very disconcerting to me on several levels. First off, we came in to fix somebody else's work. Secondly, I wasn't contacted from the start to address the situation in a professional manner. Thirdly, we did do everything according to our estimate and were promptly paid for the work which seemed to be fine for EIGHT months! Fourthly, there was never anything in our estimate to re-hang baseboard, as we did not originally remove it therefore were not obligated to re-hang it. Fifthly, we are a hardwood flooring company, not a trim carpentry company, and do not have to bid to replace, rehang, or do anything else with baseboard! Lastly, concerning any "gaps" on the stairs, this was not mentioned to me nor do I recall seeing any significant gaps, therefore we did not address any gaps. I feel like I have been slandered by a confused homeowner who should have contacted me well before she tried to build a case against me and my company using other unnamed contractors and therefore do not, in any way, shape or form, feel obligated to further contact her. I find it very hard to believe that it took EIGHT months before any of these problems were brought to my attention. For anyone that might take the time to read this and give us a shot, I would be happy to provide an extensive list of satisfied customers, most of which would be pleased to discuss our work with you.
