I recently got estimates from a half-dozen HVAC companies for the installation of a full ducted heat-pump system into an home that did not have it - a retrofit. Fort Collins Heating & Air Conditioning called me back within minutes of my submitting a quote request, and they came out the same morning - impressive. The guy who came out was dressed professionally and was notably friendly. However, his proposal was the only one that required two outdoor units and quite a bit of exterior hoses and wiring, which I had said I wanted to minimize. Pricing was also a problem; the estimate was, by far, the highest I received. I continued to like the estimator throughout the process, but the truth is that the quote was not competitive. This was the "Cadillac" of the companies I spoke to: the cost of a permit was included, they guarantee in writing that you'll pay only the estimated price, no matter what, and they have a final, separate quality inspection that nobody else does (or at least mentions). There's no doubt in my mind that these guys do a good job, and if that's all you care about, by all means give them a shot.

Prompt, reliable, honest service. Fixed a problem for $350 that a different “A” rated competitor recommended $15,000 to $20,000 to fix.

I give them a very high rating. They're a quality outfit. Their price is reasonable. They have quality service. I have not compared them with other providers because, I have had them since I built my house 15 years ago. They service my heating and air conditioning, I don't have any cost at my fingertips. They come twice a year, they let us know when it's time to come out.

We have people who are wonderful that we have done really well with. We just have a little setup with them where we put a little something every month. Then we have it checked, of course, once a year for the air conditioning and also for the heat. So far we are very pleased with them. They are local to us. We are paying about $25 a month. We are paying $250 a year so when they come out they don't charge anything additional unless there is anything wrong where they need parts or labor and to come out and inspect it and to be on call. They tell you that they are really ready to be on call for you if you join their program like we have. They give you a reduced rate for all their additional rates and equipment if we are a member. They come out twice -- once in the spring for the air conditioning and once in the fall for the heating system. I don't have any comparison for price but I don't figure they are going to put us on a priority list unless we are going to pay them something. So $25 a month, we feel, is pretty good to have them on call and have them come twice a year and know our system instead of calling somebody when it is an emergency and they don't know our system. These people twice a year they come out and inspect everything so we feel good. We are paying them every month so we keep using them because we have no reason to think that they are not as reliable or as good as anybody.

Provider missed first two hour appointment window, calling me 30m after the window expired to tell me they were not going to make it. Rescheduled appointment for first appointment of the day, given window between 8 - 9am. Received a voicemail from the technician at 9:30 saying he was running 30m late. Attempted to call back at his number, but no answer and no voicemail box setup. Called main office to reach out to technician to let him know I would not be available at that time. Received another call from the technician shortly thereafter, explaining he was stuck behind a train. I let him know I would be unavailable to meet him. Then received a call from the service manager letting me know the appointment window in their system was from 8 - 10. I explained the chain of events at which point he let me know that the person who scheduled my appointments was no longer with the company. He did offer to provide some credits and a guaranteed 8:00 - 8:30 appointment in the future, but I declined these concessions given the nature of my previous engagements with this service provider. I would not recommend this provider given the poor level of communication.

The service was fine. He did not push for repairs. We would use them again. I used a coupon. There are companies that would offer services for less but I guess you get what you pay for. I was certain they confirmed the appointment for the day before and they didn't call. They came the following day and said they had scheduled it for that day. He was punctual.

Technician was 30 minutes later than the two hour time frame I was given. No one called to tell me he would be late, I had to call and check on the status. The total cost to have carbon monoxide test was $112.00 and this was after a $20 coupon. This is a lot of money given the technician was only at my house for 20 minutes max.

Hi [Member Name Removed]. After reviewing the call, I do see that we arrived nearly 30 minutes past our agreed on window, and did not call you in advance to let you know that we were running late. This is absolutely not our practice and this will be addressed today. I have also asked our service manager to contact you about the inconvenience of making you wait. I hope we can regain your trust in the future, if you choose to contact us for any future service needs. They did a great job, came on time and took care of the job. I was a bit surprised at the price, we basically asked them to un-hook a perfectly working unit and then hook it back up, I even had to help them carry the compressor to my garage. But, they honored the discount (thankfully) and everything went fine. Just seemed kind of expensive for simply moving something that was working . . .

I researched companies to replace our air conditioner, furnace and water heater and it came down to two companies. Ft Collins H&AC had the best Angie's List review so I chose them. They also came in slightly lower in price, $9200 with rebates. It has been a good decision so far. The installers, Wade and Amadeus, were very professional, did a lot of extra touches to make the system work in our house and were very fast and efficient. They had to take all of the clothes and boxes out of a bulging downstairs closet and they put it all back, an impressive task! They were respectful and explained everything well. They were very fast, At the last minute I had to go to work at 11 the next day and they finished on time. They didn't even take lunch the first day. The quality assurance person is scheduled next week and I trust he will exhibit the same quality. Our original contact. John, was very professional and not high pressure like one of the other companies. So far we are very pleased with how the air conditioner cools the house, it's a Bryant system.

We identified that our air conditioner had a problem at about 9:00 am. We called Fort Collins Heating and Air for help. The woman on the phone was very professional. She took down my concerns and scheduled an appointment for early that same afternoon. She also told me the name of the tech that would be coming between 12 and 2 that afternoon. The tech, Cory arrived a bit before 1:00 and talked to me about what was going on. He then went about checking the system and quickly identified the issue. He explained the problem, told me about the parts that needed to be replaced and asked to proceed. Cory replaced the parts and then fully checked out the system. It works better now than ever. Very professional, thorough and very responsive.. Price was also as expected and fair.

12/23/15 update -- My rebate check of $900 for the new air conditioner has still not arrived. Just spoke with the Rebate Dept. at Xcel Energy. They told me that my application is not complete and that they sent 3 letters to Ft. Collins Heating and Air telling them this (9/25/15 and 10/12/15 and 11/13/15). I spoke with Alex Murphy of Ft. Collins Heating and Air about this on 9/8/15 and he said he would take care of this. There is nothing I can do because the application must be submitted by Ft. Collins Heating and Air. I've got calls into Ft. Collins Heating and Air. Hopefully they will respond so I can get my promised rebate. Incidentally this rebate offer I have in writing from Ft. Collins Heating and Air on their initial quote. That quote shows that I would receive a rebateof $1,120 from Xcel. I have received only $220 (for the furnace) so far. 9/8/15 update -- My rebate check just arrived and was $900 short of what I was promised by Ft. Collins Heating and Air. After tracking down the right department with Xcel Energy they say that they never received the form for the A/C installation which they say must be supplied by Ft. Collins Heating and Air. This was an interesting experience. The installation was poor but the follow-up was excellent. Although numerous errors were made on installation by an inexperienced crew all problems were eventually corrected by their senior techs. After installation I went through the system myself and documented the errors and promptly reported them to the president of the company. He had his head tech handle this and things got fixed. What I like about them are: 1. They are honest unlike all other HVAC companies I have dealt with in Colorado. 2. They do a quality control inspection by a tech other than the installation crew shortly after the install. 3. They have competitive pricing on new systems. As Angie's List has asked for all the details here they are. I made this list myself but some items (though not all) would have been caught by their quality control guy. 1. I was told that Wade was to do this install but 2 inexperienced installers arrived instead. I wanted Wade because I thought he had more experience. 2. I had to call the installers back to replace the panel on the A/C compressor. 3. The next morning we had no hot water. They had turned it off. 4. The mechanical room is very cold and there are numerous leaks in the supply air plenum. 5. The condensate drain line is done incorrectly. Positive pressure from the coil condensate drain extends into the furnace drain so it will not drain properly. 6. Electrical wiring hangs down in your face at the entrance to the furnace access area and interferes with my sprinkler drain valve. 7. The direct vent (2-pipe) system is terminated incorrectly. There must be 12" minimum vertical distance between the bottom of the combustion air intake and the bottom of the exhaust vent. They have only 3". In addition I would like a vertical run of 23.5" on the exhaust vent in case of large snowfall. 8. The furnace condensate trap appears to not have been primed. This is potentially DANGEROUS as this could allow positive pressure vent gases with carbon monoxide to enter the house. 9. The manifold pressures at minimum and maximum heats need to be checked for altitude and adjusted as required. 10. The Connex Wall control has not been adjusted for altitude to correct the furnace's airflow and static pressure readings. 11. The Connex Wall control has not been adjusted for the low heat rise option to reflect the presence of a bypass humidifier. 12. The gas pipe grommet on the right side of the furnace was not installed as required. 13. The gas iron pipe must extend a minimum of 2" outside the furnace. They put it 3/8" from the furnace. 14. The evap. coil fins have been smashed in multiple areas. They need to be straightened. Also there's at least one loose screw floating around in the evap. coil. 15. The A/C voltage was 259v at the stat but measured 248. This needs to be addressed. 16. The compressor needs to be shimmed as it overhangs the pad and rocks. This is not entirely the installation crew's fault as I worked with them to stabilize it temporarily. 17. The vent and intake pipes on the furnace have an 8 ft. run with no strapping. More is required. 18. The compressor requires 20 amp circuit breakers maximum. I have 30 amp breakers in my service panel. I should have been told to change them out. 19. The condensing unit requires a 20 amp maximum fuse according to the nameplate. This was not installed. I have put in 20 amp breakers on the dedicated circuit to the condensing unit so it's fine with me to leave it as is IF I have it in writing from Bryant that this would not void my warranty. Lacking that a 20 amp fused disconnect should be installed. 20. The Connex thermostat has intermittent operation. The screen will be black with no touch response at times. It gets too hot in the house when this occurs. It will not connect to the Bryant server even though it connects to my home wireless access point. These problems developed after installation. 21. The subcooling reading has dropped so I suspect a leak. Additionally due to the scope and number of problems described above I have reason to believe that the system was not properly evacuated at installation and therefore the system may be contaminated. The refrigerant needs to be replaced using best procedures which would involve removing the present refrigerant, evacuating using either the deep vacuum method or triple evacuation method, pressure testing, repairing any leaks and recharging with new refrigerant. 22. I have probably missed more problems that should be identified.

After completing a Fort Collins Energy Efficiency Audit, we used their website and Angie's list to narrow down the recommended service providers. After doing research, two came out ahead. The initial visit was with Jon L. the sales manager. He took our houses' dimensions, assessed our system, and then scheduled a follow-up appointment after running the information through his system to find the best system match for our needs. The other company did a similar assessment, both were informative and professional. Where Fort Collins Heating & Air Conditioning came out ahead was in the presentation of their findings. The other company sent me an Excel spreadsheet with the item details and the prices. Jon L. returned to our house for a 15 minute follow-up where he presented a packet of information based on his findings and the various options available to us. The price was more expensive than what the other company quoted (around $1200 more), but the other company missed some details in the pricing. Add to that the detail and care that went into the bid, we believe it was worth the cost. Those assumptions as to the professionalism and care that the company puts into its work was carried from Veronica, the woman who helped with financing and scheduling, to Stephen and Wade, the installers. Every step of the way was done with care and detail. I cannot begin to sing their praises enough. Wonderful service! I want to update this review to mention Alex M. A few weeks after the units were installed, Alex came to our house to do a quality inspection. Not only was he extremely well versed in efficiencies, but he helped me understand how our system works and what to look at for. This company is exceptional in so many ways, I am so impressed by their people.

Technician Steve Young showed up on time for the morning appointment (1st of the day). He put on shoe covers before heading down to our carpeted basement. He performed the checks and adjustments to the furnaces and water heaters, including opening our basement air registers to improve airflow. He adjusted the furnace settings because the system was over shooting the specified temperature rise. He thoroughly explained the adjustments he made and explained that the small leak coming from my water heater relief valve was due to a water logged expansion tank. The invoice listed all of the work he performed and included an estimate for replacing the water expansion tank. I was pleased with the service visit and his explanation.

They installed a manifold into the existing cast iron line and ran three separate flexible gas lines (gastite I think is the brand) from that manifold to the aforementioned locations. I am glad I was present when the installer arrived, as the adaptor plate they initially had that they were going to install at the range location was way too big and would have obstructed the installation of the range. After communicating the requirements to the installer, he said they would take care of it, and indeed they did. In fact, he cut the drywall back a bit to get the mounting plate to mount as far back as possible. The patio installation for the grill also was installed in exactly where I asked. Finally, I don't know how he was able to get the plate in the garage right on the wall, but he did, and it also was exactly where I had asked to have the line placed. The flexible gas line in the basement was also placed where I asked (along with existing cable/pipe bundles) to keep the joists clear for future finishing. Although I only spent about 10 minutes with the installer when he arrived, it was clear he understood what I wanted to accomplish based on the final outcome. It was a refreshing experience to work with a company/contractor that listened to what I wanted, not only from a functional perspective, but from an aesthetic perspective as well. If I ever need any HVAC work done again, I will certainly be calling these guys.

Overall they were great, really helpful in explaining the options and the details and weren't pushy. A few times I had to call to follow up, but mostly because we were anxious to get the new unit installed (we had the heat at 60 for a few weeks). Installation went smoothly, and the new unit passed with flying colors. It did take a while to finally get our rebate submitted because they needed to do one final water heater inspection.
Description of Work: Helped to identify that our furnace needed to be replaced, and changed the settings to make sure we'd have heat until we could work out timing. With their help we upgraded to a more efficient unit.

Received a phone call from the owner of the business. Very amicable conversation; he took responsibility for the company's mistakes. You have to give credit to someone who steps up and takes responsibility for their errors (not too many people own up to their mistakes). Was impressed with his investigation and willingness to call. Anyway, I did receive a refund which was also appreciated. I would think about (which is better than my original evaluation) using them again but not without tighter control.
Description of Work: First sent repairman who hadn't been told what type of service I needed. He was on time and gave his opinion that the compressor in a /c system needed replacement. This company sent another person the next day who I thought would give me a quote ; he showed up not knowing exactly why he was sent here. I told him the issue , he wrote down some notes and measurements and told me that a service manager would call me with quote. Never heard from them again. Would not recommend and as it turned out the problem was not the expensive compressor but a smaller cost capacitor. Horrible experience.

Response from Fort Collins Heating & Air Conditioning
[member name removed], Your right, we deserve an F on this one. Started with a misdiagnosis on the capacitor by our technician. Then the sales lead coordinator did not put enough detail in the salesman call sheet so he did not know specifically what he was there for and had to ask you. Then after his visit he turned in information to our service manager to prepare a repair quote for you on the compressor rather than equipment being quoted like he thought he was there for. Then that got dropped and he didn't get you called. This is not the normal way we handle things and the misdiagnosis was not intentional. I will not try and make excuses for this just own it, correct it on my end and refund your tune up amount of $125.00 with my sincere apologies. Called them out for a semi-annual maintenance checkup before turning on my air conditioning. Pete was wonderful; friendly, personable, yet professional. He checked my furnace, the heat pump, and even the humidifier. He did very nice work. The only real issue is that because I live in Greeley, they charge an extra trip charge. so the total for just this visit was $141.00. That's certainly a lot more than many of the $49 specials that I see advertised everywhere. But, as I reported before, I'm not doing that again!! You get what you pay for....
Description of Work: Spring maintenance check of furnace, humidifier and heat pump.
