He told me the job would take 5 weeks, but it took 5 months. He's a very talented carpenter and very fast in starting. There was no follow-up. I had to keep calling him to do the finish work, which was the wood work inside the room and around the ceiling and windowsills. He had other projects going on, and he never gave me an explanation why it took so long. I had to call for the final inspection. He gave me a final bill but didn't do a final inspection. The bill was more than I thought it should be. When I questioned the bill he made some adjustments. He charged me $1200 to do the windowsills and baseboards. I get emotional when I talk about it. The quality was not good on the finish work. The quality was good on the building of the room. There are nicks on the walls and floors. It took 3 weeks after the work was started to get the written proposal. It was agreed up front that if anything cost any more than the proposal we would discuss it prior to work being done. It was also agreed that I could do any of the work or have someone else do the work and the estimate would be adjusted. I received the final bill of $2,117.96. There were some errors in this bill and they were corrected. The new bill was then $1,178.95. The original estimate for paint, lacquer, stain was $1300. I did the interior priming and painting and the outside staining. In this final bill I was allowed $300 for materials and labor for this work. I spent $155 on paint and stain. There was an additional $392.19 on this final bill for sills/casing. I thought this was included in the original estimate. I questioned why he received $1,392.19 for the interior finish work and I was only allowed $300 for labor and materials for painting and staining. They then sent me a bill for $3,695. When they finally called me back to discuss this outrageous bill of $3,695, I told them I would pay the $1,178 and did not agree with the amount allowed for my labor and materials. I did not think I had any recourse so I paid this bill out of duress. I had asked for a receipt for the ceiling. I never got one. When I received the original quote it was for a cedar ceiling (the same that is in my living room). That is not what was put in. When I asked why we didn't use the same wood as the living room, I was told because this one was cheaper. However the original quote was for $2700 and that is what I paid. The final bill did not reflect a cheaper material used. I accepted many things to help this project get done. Such as: -I ordered vinyl windows with a tan interior. I got white interior. I was told that it would take 5-6 weeks longer to have to reorder the windows. I accepted the white ones. -I was told there would be plywood in the crawl space to cover the insulation. Then I was told plastic would be put up. I got neither. -I was told there would be a frame on the outside door to the crawl space. This did not happen. -I put up a smoke detector because it was on the plans submitted to the county and city. -I asked for the work to be done by 1 July. I was told it would depend upon when the windows came in. The windows were installed by June 10th. The project was completed 13 October -I cleaned up 6 bags of work site scrap. This was supposedly included in the quote.
Description of Work: I had a covered porch converted into a addition to the house.

Response from Christianson Mountain Home Builder
We are surprised and disappointed in the situation with (member). It is sad that she did no just come to us, but has been harboring these issues and is now venting in a complaint forum. The final cost of this job came in under the original bid budget. When we submitted the final bill, still under budget, Char questioned the costs of a few thing, so we cut this bill by over a thousand dollars, including our contractor fee and labor. We had done extras throughout the project, including helping her hang expensive artwork, fountains, etc. for no charge. When we tried to explain to (member) how an overall estimate works, that there are some charges for materials worked into the bid and other things aren’t billed individually, (i.e. sanding pads, paintbrushes, nails, etc.) she still did not seem to understand. It is sad that she is still not satisfied with the final project upon completion, including the ceiling that she previewed in our own personal home before choosing the type of wood used. We had brought our bid down by $3,000 dollars before the job even started to help her work within her budget, cut items out of the final bill, and still she is not satisfied. We are declining her request for money refunded, especially since we were asked to sign a form stating all financial obligations were met when we picked up the check for the final reduced amount.
