Our first red flag was that they requested cash for the job. It seemed like a reasonable price so while they were working, I went to the nearby ATM and took out the $500 they had quoted us. They did an excellent job cleaning up the limbs that were removed. We were left with a small stack of larger wood but that wasn't a problem for us to get rid of. Toward the end of the job, they told us that our large maple tree needed to be removed. Although it looks healthy, they were insistent that it was infested with carpenter ants and if we didn't remove it soon, the rest of the trees were in danger of infestation, too. At this point we encountered our next red flag: they would remove the tree for an additional $800 (cash) but only if we did it immediately. They warned that the price would be at least double if they had to return on a different date. We told them we needed time to think about it since it was a costly decision and we hated to lose such a beautiful tree. Since then, we've called out a professional arborist and he said there is no sign of carpenter ants in any of our trees. If we had removed that tree, it would have been both an unnecessary cost and we would have lost valuable shade in our backyard. We haven't heard anything from Best Tree Specialists since, which seems odd. If they were so certain the tree needed to be removed ASAP, it seems like they would have checked back to find out our decision.
