The gentleman did an adequate job and charged a reasonable price for the work. The only issue is that the locks and their respective holes aren't aligned, but it is an issue that I can resolve easily.

Thank you for taking the time to post a review on my work. As I recall, this was a new door that I installed into and existing frame. Alignment of strike holes is difficult to achieve in such an application. Never the less, a "B" for quality will never do. Please contact me to schedule a warranty visit and I will do everything I can to correct the problem.

This guy is so good that he deserves to be bonded. That is the only thing he needs to do to be a complete package and I would encourage him to do that. A good cake deserves a good frosting is my way of saying it. Lots of people out there have the external stuff like that, but don't have the ability to put out great work at a low price and in the end you will be sorry. His quality of work is A+ without a doubt. He is as close to perfect as is humanly possible and he is a perfectionist. He is very honest and he is genuinely concerned only about you and what will make you happy. This guy easily earns more money then he asks for so that's why I tipped him a bit. What more can I say? When you have a guy do major work like that and it turns out really nice, you know you don't have to worry about looking for someone the next time you need work done. He's 'the guy' and he takes care of it and his prices are great. I'm going to have him put in a pocket door for my bedroom next and I'm sure there will be more work for him after that, including maybe building my deck this summer. Just thinking of the stuff I want to get done and knowing I have a competent and fair person to work with gets me excited.
Description of Work: Services he performed and what I paid him for each: 1. Pick up specially ordered front and rear entry and storm doors from Home Depot in Louisville. ($50) 2. Remove and dispose of old front and rear entry and storm doors. ($50) 3. Install new front and rear entry and storm doors. ($700) 4. Gratuity for the extra effort and competence and honesty he displayed. ($50) Very quality complete end-to-end installation of new doors and accessories that I paid a little over $1,200 for. Also, a free follow-up by him a few days later to make some minor adjustments and replace defective weatherstripping.

Thank You for the wonderful review, WOW! It was a pleasure to be able to work on your home. I will consider your advice to become bonded. I think that a bond is quite expensive though, and one of the ways I am able to keep my prices low is by not indulging in all the fancies other companies do. I believe that there is beauty in simplicity. Thank You once again for the awesome review.

This job began as replacement of a damaged window sill. After Brian removed the damaged sill, we discovered the entire window frame was rotten and needed to be rebuilt. Brian was fair about a major change in job scope and cost. Brian removed the entire window to take to his shop to rebuild. Brian covered the hole with plywood and insulation while the window was away, and this held up successfully against a major snowstorm. After Brian installed the re-built window, he alerted me that part of the frame cracked during installation. Brian promptly replaced the cracked component at no cost. I'm not sure I would have ever noticed the crack, so Brian did not need to bring it to my attention. I'm calling Woon-N-Things again, for sure.

Thank You so much for the wonderful review. I regret that the cost and scope changed in the course of the job. I never like to have to charge my customers more than I originally quote them, but sometimes during the course of demolition new problems are discovered. I am quite pleased I was able to satisfy you despite the setbacks. You were a pleasure to work with and I hope that we can do business in the future. Thank you for your patronage.

Showed up on time, prepared. Installed gates and asked questions along the way for approval. Completed the job in a timely manner and delivered on our request at the price indicated.
Description of Work: Because of the great work we previously received, we became repeat customers. This time, the job was more complex, requiring a custom post to attached to our banister to install retractable baby gates. The job was professional & complete and any issues or questions were promptly asked in order to obtain our approval/sign off. Not only do we feel our kids are safe but the safety feature doesn't detract from the appearance of our home.

We contacted Brian because of the reports seen on Angie's List. He came to look at the job and took measurements. He was early for the appointment and expressed confidence in his abilities. Promised the bid several days later, but we did not receive it the day promised. Communicated with us only by e-mail, which caused problems. Persisted in this after being told we didn't feel e-mail communications were working well. Clarifying questions were taken as requests for changes, as were questions about options. Making changes came with a charge, and each time a question was asked, that is where Brian went. We had the balusters for the stairway, but needed newels and handrails. Brian provided a photo of the handrail he proposed, but did not provide a photo of the newels he proposed. When we asked for a photo, his response was, "You should pursue the bid of another contractor. I hereby withdraw my proposal." Additional time should have been spent up front discussing materials and finishes, and looking at the baseboards we were trying to match. While both parties are to blame for that not happening, Brian made assumptions for purposes of his bid without asking for clarification. Despite this, he did not want to rework his proposal for changes without being paid, even though he was told we wanted him to do the work. In the end, we requested a change to clarify matching of the baseboards and a change to the wood for the newels and handrails (to a less expensive wood with a price difference that was immaterial and we would not have required a price adjustment for). In the absence of information regarding what the newels would look like, we selected newels and sent a web link to Brian with our selection. Brian let us know the newels we selected did not correspond with what he had used for his bid and would be more difficult to install, which led to our request for a picture of the newels he had bid so we could consider it. We were not going to agree to spend $3,000 on the project without knowing what it would look like when finished and the newel posts are significant to the stairway project. Brian apparently took offense to this and apparently felt he had no culpability, did not show us the newels he had selected for our project for our consideration, and rather than working further with us to come to a resolution, determined he did not want the work. Brian had previously indicated a rework in the proposal would take him 4 to 8 hours. It would have been more palatable (and professional, in our opinion) for him to work the proposal/contract time into the total job cost rather than making this a major issue, particularly since we had verbally committed to have him do the job. Brian was not a good fit for us because of the communication issues and his drive to get a contract in place and move on. After requesting the photo of the newel posts and before hearing back from him, we also came to the conclusion that we probably needed to work with someone else, as there was starting to be too much brain damage (on both sides, we imagine). Our advice would be to know exactly what you want before you contact him, be specific, and be prepared for a) e-mail only communication; and b) push-back on making changes to your project, pursuing options or requesting design assistance. Also be prepared to sign a contract after your first meeting with him. We would have considered using him for projects where we know what we want and can be specific, but because of the way the last communications he sent to us were handled, we would no longer be comfortable doing so. For the reasons stated, we cannot give a high grade on professionalism or overall experience.

Wonderful job! Thanks Brian! After having our new cabinets installed in October, our original contractor left us high and dry with the job unfinished. He failed to return to install the crown molding and hook our water back up. Fortunately, my husband was able to reconnect the water, but didn't feel confident enough to cut and install the crown molding. I was a little hesitant to hire another contractor, and decided to join Angieslist.com to research information for a new contractor. I was pleased to see that the contractors were not only rated, but had testimonials from actual clients attesting to the work provided. Brian was prompt and professional, and did an excellent job! The finishing touch of crown molding is perfect! I would definitely use Brian again! Roberta Jennings

No small task. We installed engineered birch handscraped wood flooring next to a thin oak parquet that the no sold a transition to fit. We needed a 12 foot piece . Brian ordered a piece of wood to span the entire length . He shaped and stained it to be a perfect match. He is very skilled and talented at his craft. The baseboard made the flooring job complete and polished.I would recommend him for any woodworking job may need.

Brian was quick to respond to our inquiry, kept us and the lock contractor advised as he worked through some difficulties getting the door and arranging schedules. Brian's quote was less than another contractor's quote, he was professional and thorough, and the work met all our expectations. He was very pleasant to work with, always showed up when he said he would, and we certainly recommend him to others.
Description of Work: Brian replaced the jamb on one exterior door, and replaced another six panel fire rated, solid wood entry door for us after a burglary in which two doors were kicked in. Brian worked with Brett Miller of LockStar to coordinate Brian's door work with Brett's lock work so that the job was done in one day and just a few hours.

They charged us $400 for their services. The stain was incorrect even though they took the tru of the stain. They took a sample of some drawers that we had. They took them in and had them custom matched, re-stained and refinished all of the additional shelves that they did for us. It took a little bit longer than we thought but it matches perfectly. We will use their services again in the future if we needed to.

Brian arrived on time and quickly diagnosed the issues. He offered me choices on the outcome of the broken door frame repair. He did exactly what he stated he would and the job was done well. While he was here, we discussed a job that is far bigger and more complicated involving adjusting a couple of closed in porches. I will definitely schedule that job with him for the spring. I recommend Wood-n-Things to anyone with carpentry jobs they want done right!

I called Brian to work on my outside doors that were leaking both air and dirt. All the doors needed new weatherstripping and sill adjustment and one of the doors needed to be replaced entirely due to water/insect damage. In addition I hade new handles and locks to install on all 4 doors. Brian arrived on time and did an excellent job of making the doors weather-tight. When he got to the outside door to the garage he discovered a lot of damage both to the door and the jamb. I called Home Depot and ordered a door which Brian picked up for me and then installed. The entire job turned out to be more than either of us had anticpated, but Brian was able to complete the same day. I was very pleased withe results and now feel safe and secure. I thought the price was very reasonable for all the work that was done and I would certainly recommend him to my friends

Bryan made room for this work in the week that I first called him. He arrived prompty when scheduled, assessed the problems and outlined his plan to fix them. He managed to fix the exterior door without having to install a new door. He quoted and charged an extremely reasonable price. The work took him approximately two and a half hours as he predicted. He cleaned up afterwards and was very professional in his demeanor. I was very pleased with his work.
Description of Work: An exterior door no longer fit due to shifting. It had shifted so that it could not be opened or locked properly. Likewise, an interior door no longer closed smoothly. And a window could not be closed and locked.

I called Brain and he went to the townhome, looked at the sliding glass door to be removed called me and told me how much it would be to remove and install the French Door that we bad purchased. He showed up on Saturday, and removed the old door and trim. I assisted Brain with lifting and putting in the new French Door. He then secured the new door in place and made sure it was square and plum. He did a great job. It only took 3 & half hours to remove and install the new door. The workmanship was excellent.
Description of Work: I needed to get a French Door installed replacing a sliding glass door. I called Brain and he gaved me an estimate for removal & installation of the new French Door in the town home that we are going to move into. Brain estimated the work would take 8 hours. He had the door installed and working in 3&half hours. He was very professional with his work. He was easy to talk with about the work he was doing, and explained what he was doing and what he needed to do. I would use him again. Terrific. He finished within the time covered on the special deal price, leaving everything swept and clean. He also repaired the door jam so that the original latch and deadbolt lock would work. He even spent a few minutes giving me ideas and an estimate about a future project that I was considering.
Description of Work: Following a week of rains the walk-in door to my garage had finally warped beyond repair and needed to be replaced. I paid $98 on Angie's Great Deal for 4 hours of carpenter work and called Brian Tilson at Wood-N-Things to replace the door. He responded promptly, coming to the house to get measurements and give me an estimate on Wednesday, buying the replacement slab (the door is an irregular size) on Thursday, and arriving at my house to cut, hang, and paint the door at 8AM Friday morning. The additional $70 was for the wooden slab and replacement hinges.

When Brian Tilson came to give us an initial estimate, he spent quite a bit more time than the previous contractor who gave us an estimate measuring the area. He listened carefully to us as to what we were looking for (a safe set of steps with handrails); he also suggested that the porch follow the contours of the porch roof/overhang. We received the detailed estimate over email; it specified the breakdown of labor and material costs, including his margin for getting the materials. At first we were a bit reluctant to pay extra for materials (over the estimated base cost); it turns out that his eye for selecting the right lumber was worth the extra cost. At one point, he showed me what wood he selected and why (and what pieces he cut away). Prior to starting work, Brian put together some drawings and had us meet him at the county offices to make sure we had the appropriate building permit. (I didn't know that if you attach a new porch to the house, that requires a permit.) Brian brought in a portable carpentry "shop" (a big bin) and set up in front of the house. He took care to make sure the driveway remained relatively open and got his truck out of our way when we requested it. His first step was to demolish the existing porch and dig holes for some new cement blocks. He took away the dirt and rocks, and stacked all the existing bricks on the side of the porch. Within a couple of days, he had a frame in place for the main platform. The next day the platform was complete. It took a total of 5 days, one of which was a Saturday. The stairs and than the rails completed the porch; on the last day he stained the porch. During the construction (and staining) he put up caution tape - particularly on the inside of the front door (which was great as I know on several occasions I was about to step out the door but was stopped in time by the caution tape.) The resulting platform feels extremely solid. The steps are laid out well and are easy to step on - they feel like they are just the right size. The wood joints on the porch look seamless; given the hexagonal shape of the porch, all the wood joints have no gaps between them. Brian's mitering of wood was excellent (which would explain why he used a miter saw so much.) Brian's work habits seemed fine; he did often talk to himself as if he was working out a puzzle. At first I was wondering about his self chattiness, but then I became used to it quickly. I guess it's just his style of working. He cleaned up well after himself. He even took some of the old bricks and cut them down so they filled in the spaces around the wood posts. The only problem we encountered was when one of the knots in one of the rails cracked and became loose. I pointed this out to him and asked if he could glue the knot. Instead he replace the entire board. At one point he expressed his displeasure with the "kiln dried" wood from the local lumber suppliers. We paid Brian $1500 up front and the rest upon completion of the work. My wife and I are very happy with the results and will be calling Brian at Wood-n-things if we have more carpentry needs in the future.
Description of Work: Our existing brick & wood beam porch was over 17 years old and falling apart. Given my mother-in-law's age, we were concerned that the steps into the house were no longer safe for her. We initially got an estimate a few months ago from another contractor for over $6000, which was way to much for us. My wife suggested we find a carpenter, rather than a contractor, since she wanted a wood porch. Through some contacts we were given the contact information for Wood-n-things, which is small carpentry business run by Brian Tilson. Based upon some input, Brian gave us a detailed estimate of $3136 (including materials and labor). What we got was quite incredible, going far beyond my expectations. Rather than just get a set of replacement steps and small porch, Brian designed and build a complete wooden porch out of cedar and redwood with handrails/banisters. Not only did he do an excellent job, he designed it so that it matched the contours of the porch/front door roof/overhang. Other than that it looks new, the porch now looks like it was designed with the house. What we particularly liked was the attention to detail, including: Placement of the boards so that they were all aligned in grain direction A detailed sanding job that almost makes the boards used in the handrails seem like one single board The placement of the banisters so that it would be easy to shovel snow off the porch (which was a real problem with the older porch.) He also stained the porch to match the wood of the door overhang. We found out later that Brian is a 'master finishing carpenter", who had been working for over 30 years. That helped explain why he seemed to be so meticulous in his work.
