We had him replace the 90's trek deck with an updated product as well as redo the railings and extend our deck to make it double the size. Project took about 6 weeks with the 4th of July holiday in there. We had a little delay due permitting with the city of Lafayette, so the permit probably should have been submitted sooner, but it did set us back a few days. Brian did a great job with responding to extra deck issues - like top rotten joists that were unexpected and a change in railing idea we had, which that Brian responded to with no problem. The actual cost was a bit higher than the estimate, but we anticipated this is the aforementioned joist issue and railing changes. This is the 2nd job Brian has done for us.
Description of Work: Brian rebuilt and extended our 2nd story deck.

I found them through Angie's List. I actually ordered doors through another provider that is not on Angie's List and it turned out to be a disaster. Wood-N-Things came in and replaced the interior stuff it was on and did a terrific job. The quality of the work was stellar, the communication was good so I was all around very happy with it. I am very happy with the finished product and I'm very happy with the process. They took care of everything. They put in beautiful jambs and beautiful doors. They did everything right and communicated with us all the way along so I was very happy with that. I would use them and I would recommend them. It is a one-man shop and Ryan doesn't have the highest education level. He smokes, you can smell that when he walks in, but aside from that, he is terrific. He is very, very good at explaining the process and he followed through on what he said. I have some more jobs that I am planning to use him for in the future.
Description of Work: Wood-N-Things did a back door and a door that goes between a kitchen and a stairwell, and they did a great job.

Brian did a fantastic job, it's obvious he loves what he does and it shows in the quality of work he completed. There we're many things that could have gone wrong on this job, but he carried it out masterfully. Thanks Brian, we'll see you when we hang our screen door!
Description of Work: Installed all the hardware on our front door including hinges, lockset and handle assembly which was no easy task as Brian had to carve out 4 inch deep into the door for the crazy lockset we bought. He also masterfully hung the door.

Brian did a marvelous job! I told him in advance that I wanted to make sure that this deck didn't fail structurally like my old one did. He did a great job of pouring many (deep) footings and taking other measures to ensure that the deck will live a long life in our back yard. Brian showed up every day at the same time and was very, very professional. Truth be told, he's a real sweetheart (don't tell him I said that)! The project was done in much less time than I anticipated, and the finished product is much nicer than I thought it would be.

Brian was amazing! He completed the work himself and the work took him just four days. We found him on Angie’s List and he provided us with the best of all the quotes that we received. He seemed like the most legit guy for the work and his pictures that he provided were amazing. We will not hesitate to buy a home without a deck because now we have found Brian and we will gladly hire him again to build us another deck.
Description of Work: We hired Brian to install had a 17ft by 10ft red wood deck put in with a railing, stairs, and gate to help sell our home. He poured the foot ends and re-built the ledger as well.

Brian (owner) was very responsive and professional from the initial contact to completion. He honored his initial estimate to the penny even after having to make some design changes to satisfy the local building inspector. He provided a detailed plan and took care of all required building permits and inspection issues. His work including demolishing and removing the old deck, digging and pouring new footings, building a new pressure-treated subframe and finishing with Trex decking, fascia and railing. He was able to incorporate iron ballusters and a gate from a second vendor to complete the project. Throughout the construction process, Brian was very neat and careful to clean up after each day. Although the project was delayed by several rainstorms, Brian finished the deck in a reasonable timeframe and always kept us informed as to his schedule or any delays. Best of all, the quality of his work was impeccable and I'm sure the resulting deck has added significant value to our home. I especially appreciated that Brian, as the owner of his business, does all the work himself (with some help by a supervised helper) vs. companies that hire subcontractors. Brian is an honest and fair businessman and tradesman that truly strives to satisfy his customers. As a result, I have no hesitation in recommending Wood-n-Things for any type of carpentry/decking project.

It never showed "standard" installation on my coupon, but I notice tonight as I fill out your review that it does on Angie's List. This should be clarified on the coupon, so that you are not held liable for "un-standard"doors! I thank you very much for looking at the mess I had, and helping me to get my door fixed. The prior installers had no clue, installing the brick mould on the inside of the house, and not on the outside. Then they hammered flat the door striker to match the door mould. Amazing. Brian, for slightly more than the agreed price, you spent the day making sure it was correct, to the best of your ability. It shuts nice now, and I have door trim on the inside, and the brick mould on the outside, as it's supposed to be. And... no gaps. There is no substitute for someone who knows what to do.
Description of Work: Pulled my existing door, and fixed what another less qualified door installation person had done.

The railing was to go to the second set of steps, after a turn, down to the basement. I told him I wanted a railing like the one that runs down the first set of steps (about 2.5 feet long). After I called to tell him I'd like him to do the job, he asked me to send a picture of the top railing. When he arrived, he installed a railing that was (1) not exactly the same color as the first, but close enough, I guess, (2) not the same molding design... why not??? and (3) the railing was an obvious splice of two different pieces of wood. So, I complained that he had not told me he would be splicing wood together. He gave me a discount. I should have asked to see the railing before he installed it. I would have preferred to pay what he originally estimated, even more, to have the railing I asked for. Instead, I'm 'putting up' with this, though I gotta say, it irritates me every time I think about it.
Description of Work: Provided a wooden railing about 4 feet 7 inches long.

I am sorry you are not satisfied with your job. As I recall I quoted you a price for a premium rail, however you were looking for a more economical price so I reworked it to suit. I most certainly did not splice your rail. It was manufactured that way by one of the leading rail companies in the country. I did everything I could to make you happy with the job, including new brackets on the old rail and discounting the price of the new rail. I could have, would have provided you with the premium job but that was not what you requested. Regards, Brian

Brian did a great job of replacing all of our interior doors and trim. He included tearing out the old doors and trim in the bid as well as hauling them away. He showed up exactly when he said he would and completed the job the same day. We were very pleased with the results and plan on using him for a future project. We would highly recommend him as a contractor.

I would give him top marks all the way. He designed it and it was an improvement and his work was superior. Someone did the original fence ten years ago. He worked quickly. The price was reasonable. He constructed the whole thing in his shop. His sense of design was very good. He had it handled. It was done beautifully. He had some artistic ability. It wasn't just putting up a fence. He had artistic talent. It was such an improvement.

Brian came on Mother's Day and actually gave this as a very considerate gift. Our estimation of the cost of service is just a guess at what he might have charged, and what we would have been happy to pay. He was very punctual and courteous, as well as efficient; his work couldn't have been any better. He had to work in a stooped- over position on his knees amidst the rocks, and he never complained nor did he stop until the job was done. It was a difficult job and we're very pleased with it.
Description of Work: Brian replaced the entire top covering of the soffit that runs all along the back of our house. That covering had originally been pressed board and was all cracked and broken, which has allowed wasps to nest inside every summer, and as it turned out had also been a squirrel nest--he found two mummified squirrels under there. He replaced the pressed board with 5/8" exterior plywood and applied 1x2" molding all along the edges, and finished by caulking thoroughly.

Brian was prompt to respond to a request for a bid. He came out and looked at the existing door, as well as the door I had purchased to replace it. He let me know that the depth of the door I purchased was not as deep as the walls of my house ( woops!) He knew how to fix it properly by adding jamb extensions. Originally he bid for installing a screen door as well, which I changed my mind on, and he responded to a re-bid request in under 24 hours. His prices were slightly below other comparably rated installers, but not by enough to be the sole deciding factor in choosing him. The work took 4-5 hours, where he removed the existing door and sidelight unit and installed the replacement. The jamb extensions he installed match perfectly and look like a part of the original door. He installed the casing on the inside, the door hardware, and cleaned up after himself. The door really does look great, both from the inside and outside. I really appreciated his willingness to work with a pre-purchased unit, as opposed to many of the other door folks who wanted to be the ones to provide the door as well as installation services. When the unit was not quite what it was supposed to be (due to my error in measuring before Brian was involved) he didn't make me feel stupid, but offered a solution that worked wonderfully. I will definitely be calling him back for the screen door installation once the house is painted. Thanks Brian!

Thank You for the wonderful review. I am glad I was able to assist you with this project, and to hear that you are so happy with how it turned out. I've used their services twice. They did a good job. They were very good about calling me, emailing me and sending me photos. The quality of work was good and they were very clean. In both cases, the cost was beyond the scope of the initial assessment and part of that was because I wanted something else and they were fine with it. I thought that the additional charges were really reasonable. I would recommend them to others without hesitation. The windows were costlier but I was happy to pay the price because they were competent and more knowledgeable.
