After 1 1/2 weeks of work, Jim had not even finished painting the kitchen/dining room area which is not even 1/4 of my home. When I brought to Jim's attention that I was concerned about the pace of the work, he said he would work late that day and stayed until 2 am "finishing" the kitchen/dining room and the living room while I was sleeping. I don't know why I told him to go ahead and work, it was a mistake, but it was just weird that he stayed at my home so late painting. No surprise, when I woke up in the morning, the quality of work completed was horrible. There were large blotches on all the walls where the paint had not covered. I called JIm and let him know and he said he would come over that day and fix the issues. I had flagged all the areas I found that had problems with blue tape. He said he would paint for about 3 hours. When I returned home, the blue tape was removed from the walls but the issues were not corrected - it did not look like he had painted anything. I asked him to address the issues and also asked him what his role was in the quality control of the work. He could not clearly articulate to me how he was ensuring quality and when he went back and painted the areas for a second time, there were still issues. It seems unbelievable doesn't it . . . but I am telling you honestly. Jim painted all of the areas with issues no less than 3 times and still did not address the issues. There was not a single wall in the home that was covered sufficiently with paint - it looked as though I had invited my college friends over to paint my first home. After 2 1/2 weeks of work, Jim had not even completed painting 1/3 of my home. Although I had several direct conversations with him on quality of the work, he took no measures to address it. He showed up every day around noon to work and spent no more than 3 or 4 hours per day painting which explains the pace. I asked Jim not to finish the work and spent an entire day touching up areas that were a disaster. I am now looking for a new painter to finish my home and will no doubt be paying the new painter to redo some of the work I have already paid for. This was an unexpected disaster as Jim was referred to me by my color consultant. I learned that I need to ask how many hours a day will be spent working, understand the approach to quality and workmanship and also understand how they intent to keep the job on track.
Description of Work: I hired Jim Simasko to paint the interior of my home including all rooms, all walls, all trim and ceilings. My house is 1400 sq feet with some vaulted ceilings in the kitchen/dining room area and stairs going to the master bedroom - nothing a professional should find difficult to handle. Jim quoted me $4800 for 3 weeks of work to complete the job. Ceilings/trim were to be white with colored paint on the walls. Benjamin Moore Regal paint used.

Response from PAINTING MATTERS
Yes there were problems getting the paint to cover properly as the texture was very thick on the walls. This is not an uncommon experience in newer construction. What happens is that because the texture is so thick the paint doesn't fill in the hole in the texture. So, after you have coated the wall and come back the next day you can see pin holes. Tallie called me and immediately to complain about the quality of my painting before giving me a chance to come over and look at the problem. On a Saturday morning at 8:30am after putting in a 17 hour day to try and catch up. After seeing what was happening I thinned the first coat hoping it would cover better, which it did. As far as the schedule goes I was running behind schedule. I told Tallie that I thought it would take about three weeks. I was wrong, My estimates are based on prior experience and it's not like an airline schedule since there are many factors that can slow a project down. I worked hard to make Tallie happy. She is a very suspicious person and at the mere hint of something not going the way she expects she immedialely jumps to the conclusion that you are incompetent and can"t be trusted. She even climbed one of my ladders to mark a spot on a wall eight feet off the floor that couldn"t be seen unless you were standing on a ladder eight feet off the floor. In twenty five years of painting I have never had a client climb a ladder looking for imperfections that can"t be seen. I'm not perfect but I do whatever it takes to make a client happy. Unfortunately Tallie is in that group of 2%-3% that aren't happy no matter what you do. I have been painting for 25 years and have never had a client as difficult to work with as Tallie.
