Kevin O'Brien was unable to fulfill his promise to perform a relatively basic and general bathroom remodel project for us under the terms and conditions in the consideration of a legal binding agreement. The agreement was confirmed on April 10, 2014 although we initially received a written estimate from Kevin on January 21, 2014. Kevin O'Brien was unable to manage his time effectively and displayed an impressive level of uselessness in his ability to effectively communicate with us and perform the tasks in the above mentioned agreement. Kevin O'Brien, (a.k.a. glorified scheduler) was consistent in failing to manage and secure independent sub-contractors he uses to perform a relatively basic and general bathroom remodel. He consistently scheduled and rescheduled the project over a THREE month period of time due to his inability to schedule and control independent sub-contractors he uses since he does not employ them. In addition, Kevin was incapable of delivering a promised written contract on numerous occasions. I believe Kevin O'Brien unethically used us as a place holder in between bigger jobs and was not straightforward or sincere with us from the beginning with regard to OUR project. Kevin O’Brien only succeeded in wasting MONTHS of our time with his delaying and postponing with one excuse after another causing us to reschedule our vacation and other events. In addition, AFTER making us wait over THREE months, Kevin O'Brien arbitrarily decides to BREACH our legal agreement with no regard of common courtesy or consideration to us on June 16. We wanted confirmation he was indeed deciding to breach and Kevin O’Brien confirmed his BREACH again on June 17. It was at that time Kevin O'Brien had the AUDACITY to threaten to BILL US for his time he is unable to manage immediately and directly AFTER HE BREACHES our legal agreement on June 17. Kevin O'Brien's time is worth nothing to us and Kevin O'Brien did not set foot into our home to do any of the agreed upon work with regard to the project under the terms and conditions in the consideration of the agreement. Kevin O'Brien IS NOT entitled to make arbitrary demands after HE BREACHES. THIS IS CONTRACT 101. We consulted with an attorney and are VERY CLEAR on our position. We are currently mitigating damages. Kevin O'Brien’s inability to keep his emotions and temper in check towards problems he has created for himself are considered by us to be as “intent to harass” which will not be tolerated. We are prepared to move forward vigorously with a lawsuit for compensatory damages we are entitled to. Kevin O'Brien is absolutely the most self-serving arrogant disingenuous incompetent "self-proclaimed" contractor I have ever had the unfortunate experience to deal with. I cannot overstate how reprehensible Kevin O'Brien's actions have been throughout the painful duration of this process and his inexcusable, unprincipled and unprofessional conduct.
Description of Work: Kevin O’Brien promised us he would do a relatively basic and general bathroom remodel project and provided original estimate January 21, 2014. We corresponded with Kevin O’Brien from January 12, 2014 through June 17, 2014. It should never take 6 months to get a promised contract delivered that was promised to us on numerous occasions. Kevin wasted 6 months of our lives with push backs, put offs and reschedules. Other contractors were ready to start within two weeks. I believe Kevin O'Brien used us as a place holder between bigger jobs. In addition, Kevin O’Brien arbitrarily BREACHED the contract June 17, 2014 with no legal basis or foundation and a general lack of common courtesy and consideration to us.The address given is the residence where the bathroom remodel was to take place but to be very clear, no work of any kind was ever done.

Kevin did a great job - the tile looks nice and the shower has not had any problems (the work was done over 3 years ago). He was more expensive than other quotes I received, but it was worth it because he did a quality job. He was always responsive, professional, and on time. I would use him again.
Description of Work: Kevin replaced a corner shower in my second bathroom. The existing shower unit was leaking. Kevin installed a new shower, tile, and glass door enclosure.

Description of Work: So disappointed, I made several attempts to contact this company for a Kitchen remodel. Unfortunately they must have so much business they did not have time to call me back. I have since hired someone else and have had the job completed to my satisfaction.

Unfortunately there must be some confusion as we are located in Denver Colorado, not Utah. Sorry for the lack of communication as we assumed this was project was meant to be done in Utah.

One bathroom was a typical "quick construction" bathroom and the other was built by the previous owner who thought watching the Home and Garden channel taught him everything he needed to know. Kevin came in demoed it all and brought them both up to code and they are gorgeous! If the master tub had padding, I would sleep in it. In addition, the floors in the basement were replaced with gorgeous hardwoods. Kevin and I got our wires a little crossed - I ended up accidentally hiring someone other than his contractor to install the floors. The person who did the job was horrible. Kevin quickly and very thoughtfully rectified the situaton by going to bat for me with the flooring company and found an excellent trim guy who finished the job. Kevin's excellent customer service is the reason why I hired him again to do another "fun" remodel on another property which turned out beautiful as well.
Description of Work: Two ugly leaky bathrooms were transformed - 1 full and a 3/4. New tile, doors, toilets, fans, lights, etc.

Overall the job went better than expected and we would use Kevin again in the future.
Description of Work: My husband and I hired O'Brien Construction to remodel our outdated bathroom. After meeting with Kevin we felt like his company was the best fit for our project. Kevin uses subcontractors that are some of the best craftsman we have seen. Their drywall and painting were top notch! The tiling portion of the shower and tub are amazing and we are getting compliments when friends are over. The shower was built to meet our needs which include a bench and some recessed shower niches. Shower glass was custom made and installed for our project. Kevin's vendors and showrooms really gave me the best options for tile and plumbing fixtures. We highly recommend anyone reading this to hire Kevin and his amazing team of subcontractors!!! We did have an issue with he shower door leaking a little but Kevin had his glass guy out there the next morning and fixed the sweep on the bottom of the door. Kevin definitely stands behind his excellent work

Hiring someone to do a project on your home can be at best a crapshoot. You can utilize resources such as this list and recommendations from friends and relatives but, in the end, there is still no guarantee that you will get your project done properly and at a fair price. Obviously, interviewing prospective companies is important but one has to realize that most salespeople know exactly what to tell the homeowners to try to get their business. I've also learned that getting an estimate much lower than the others usually means hidden costs and/or over runs and that estimates that are much higher means the company doesn't want your business or that they are resting on their reputation. In the end, it is very hard to select a company and someone that you can trust especially for a project that is not inexpensive. You trust your instincts and hope for the best. With that in mind, I did find having my bathroom remodel with O'Brien Construction a very positive one. Kevin, the owner, was trust worthy and honest . The cost of the project was reasonable and fair. Our over-runs were minimal. His group of sub-contractors were all top notch. The quality of the work was excellent. Kevin does have a strong work ethic and a strong loyalty to his suppliers (which could be a problem for some individuals wanting to use different sources). He was at our house daily to make ensure everything was in order and always was available for any concerns or questions. His most positive attribute was his integrity by ensuring that the project was done correctly. He re-installed our shower glass and will be re-doing our bathroom window (glass block) at his cost. I would not hesitate a second to recommend this company to a friend or family member. We will be using him in the near future to do a re-model of our hallway bathroom.
Description of Work: Total remodel of our master bathroom involving gutting the walls, ceiling and floor. Installed new tile floor, jetted tub, shower, vanity and top, medicine cabinent, ceiling ventilation fan, new door. Project was 5 wks and finished mostly within time frame.

When we first met Kevin, we were impressed with the detail and his knowledge of construction. The bathroom in the basement was completed with the only problem being that a special shower had to be built from scratch because of the space. However, the shower turned out beautiful. The upstairs bathroom turned out beautiful but we did have some problems along the way which included increased costs. We chose to buy our own toilet, sink and bathtub because we found better products on line. Kevin does a beautiful job with ceramic tile, however he doesn't always remember the decisions we made prior to the work. For example, we had always designed the walls and the floor in different patterns. Kevin said we had changed our minds about the pattern on the floor which resulted in having to buy more tile than was estimated. We had saved the previous door from the old bathroom to be reused. However, he cut the door too short resulting in the purchase of another door. The caulking had to be redone numerous times because the moisture loosened the caulking. Some of the remaining caulking, I chose to do myself. The painter Kevin employs was amazing. In fact we hired her to do another painting job for us. The plumber did great work, however his language left much to be desired while he was working. As with all remodeling, there are little things that are noticed once the job is done. Sometimes it took Kevin a while to get back to us.
Description of Work: Our house was built in 1922 and we were having a basement 3/4 bathroom replaced and a full bathroom upstairs. This required completely gutting both bathrooms that had lath and plaster walls and concrete in the floor. The services performed on the basement bathroom included: adding a sink, replacing a corner shower and toilet, ceramic tiling on floor and shower walls and ceiling, installing bathroom fan, bead bord and wainscotting of walls, installing grab bars near toilet and in shower, new plumbing and electrical, and painting. Services on the upstairs bathroom included, new plumbing and electrical, ceiling fan, ceramic tiling of walls and floor, installing new toilet, sink and walk in handicapped tub, pocket door, wall cabinets, solid glass panel on kneewall, and painting.

Response from O'Brien Construction Inc
We try to go above and beyond with our clients in regards to their project. We are sorry to hear that your experience was less than perfect as we strive to make your remodeling experience a pleasant one. The timeline did get altered as the bathtub was changed to a walk-in type resulting in some redirection for the plumbing and tile layouts. The entrance door was a pocket door and was installed incorrectly which we remedied and did not charge our client for the 2nd door installation or painting the door 2 different colors. We offer our apologies if your remodeling experience wasn't a great one. We do try to offer our clients a quick turn around on warranty items but sometimes we couldnt get back the next day. Thank you for reviewing our company and showing us places to improve on.

Called this company for an estimate. My budget was around $12K for a master bath remodel. Received a call back about a week later, and was told that basically for the job I want that would be the cost of materials, but he would give me a call next week to set up a consultation. Never got a call back.
Description of Work: Nothing, never even got a bid.

Kevin O?Brien is very professional and has great organizational skills. His subcontractors were sequenced very efficiently so that the project did not experience delays. Kevin knows the value of good communication with clients, and each time I spoke with him he always asked if I had any questions or concerns. He also communicated well with my condo management regarding water shutoffs, flooring noise-control underlayment, and the insurance policy he carried. He and his subs always showed up at the scheduled time, and the work areas (as well as the condo halls) were always cleaned at the end of the day. The subcontractors did work of exceptional quality. Kevin was a good problem solver, and came up with the idea of a steel bar to support one end of my granite bar overhang rather than a bulky corbel. The project was 90% done in five weeks (when he had estimated 6-7 weeks). And I moved back into the kitchen at that point. However, finishing the project took another four months! There were mistakes on the part of the distributor, manufacturer, and installer of the (high-end, custom) cabinets. (The fillers in the lower cabinets were not wide enough, so a drawer wouldn?t open because it bumped into the oven handle and two cabinet doors hit appliances. The pantry doors arrived configured differently than ordered. The re-ordered doors weren?t colormatched and had to be ordered a third time. Pantry roll-outs weren?t deep enough to use the available space.) Lesser contractors would have disappeared when these problems arose, but Kevin vowed he would finish the project to my satisfaction. He worked with his cabinet distributor to order some new doors, filler, end panel, roll-outs, and drawer fronts. He even had to recut granite and reconfigure a kneewall to solve the drawer-bumping problem. For only two days during the final four months was there any construction mess in my kitchen. Of course, I wish that the project had been completed in 7 weeks, but I am going to live with this kitchen for years and am glad that it was completed correctly. Kevin can be trusted; he knows the value of a good reputation. I felt like Kevin was my partner in trying to achieve a great project outcome, rather than just a person I had hired. I wanted perfection, a high-end kitchen, and warranted work and Kevin delivered. Even with my problems I can easily recommend O?Brien Construction.
Description of Work: Kitchen was gutted and completely remodeled with modern cabinets of engineered cherry (looks like bamboo), granite countertops, and commercial-grade maple flooring. Painting, carpentry, drywall, plumbling, and electrical work were required. (Price above does not include the appliances which I purchased separately.)

Kevin O'Brien was very thorough on the details and type of finishes I wanted. The bid was very accurate. The project was started on time and only ran one week over estimated 6 week completion because of a wrong tile choice on my part. O'Brien Construction was always on time, they kept the jobsite clean and placed plastic runners on the carpet getting to the basement. Subcontractors were all courteous and professional. Communication was easy, open and honest throughout the project. I would definately hire O'Brien Construction again. :-)
Description of Work: Hired O'Brien Construction for a full basement finish. Installed a new egress window and replaced old windows, wetbar with travertine tile countertop and glass tile backsplash. Installed custom shelving built-ins for entertainment area. New electrial subpanel, surround-sound wiring, plumbing for sink, reroute upstairs drainage line.

Overall, the projects went extremely well. From the beginning, Kevin was very knowledgeable about the work I was looking to have done. He presented a lot of great ideas and had pictures from prior jobs to assist in generating additional ideas. The bid he presented was extremely organized and detailed. He listed all the contractors he works with and provided their contact information so I could check them out. He also provided references of previous clients that I could contact regarding his work. He took the time to go over the entire bid, explain any terminology used, and answer any questions I had. He was willing to pull any and all permits, whether needed or not, to ensure I was comfortable. Kevin's bid was not the highest I received, nor was it the lowest; however, the quality of work completed is second to none. Kevin always showed up on time to do the work discussed beforehand, and if something came up that altered the work schedule, he was sure to call well ahead of time to inform me of the changes. He never ended a phone call without asking me if I had any questions or concerns, and he even made a few follow up calls after the work was completed to see if I was happy with everything or if there were any problems. I intend to have Kevin complete the remodel of my master bathroom in the near future, and I would recommend his work to anyone. O'Brien Construction is top notch!
Description of Work: The overall project was broken down into 2 individual projects, kitchen and upstairs bathroom (which included the floors in front of the fireplace, front door entry, and garage door entry). Kevin replaced the old floor tile in the kitchen, upstairs bathroom, in front of fireplace, and front and rear entry ways with a 13" ceramic tile. He installed a new vanity, sink, faucet, and toilet in the upstairs bathoom as well. Next, he installed granite countertops in the kitchen and upstairs bathroom all from the same granite slab. Also, he installed a new kitchen sink and faucet along with a new disposer. Last, but not least, he installed a 12.75" mosaic backsplash tile throughout the entire kitchen.

We met with Kevin a few times before we decided to hire him. He always made sure to make his appointments on time. We wanted to hire someone with attention to detail who would do quality work and decided to go with Kevin after referrals and our meetings with him. This was not an easy job but Kevin knows old houses and knew exactly what he had to do to and more importantly, what kind of problems he expected to run into. He discovered some issues from faulty work done many years ago and was really good about communicating the problem and what our solutions were. Everything was done when he said it would be and his subcontractors were superior. I am very picky about remodeling and Kevin not only lived up to my high standards but he did a good job handling all my questions and issues. He is a very good communicator and that really helped during this project. I would highly recommend O"Brien Construction - especially if you have rooms in an old house that need remodeling. He really knows his stuff. I wanted a high end bathroom and that's what I got.
Description of Work: We remodeled an old bathroom on the main floor of our house. We have lath and plaster walls with 4 to 6 inches of concrete under all the tiles. The bathroom was completely gutted and plumbing moved. O'Brien Construction handled everything including the demolition, plumbing, electrical, HVAC and walls.

From the beginning I could tell Kevin was in a different league than the other contractors that I talked to. He is very professional and only hires sub-contractors that meet his high standards. We agreed on changes along the way as mold and other hazards were found. One of the things that I really appreciated about Kevin was his patience in explaining everything to me and never pressuring me to do additional work. I never imagined my basement could look so good We talked a lot about the look I wanted and he offered good suggestions. His tile work is beautiful. The clearance in my stairway was not up to Denver building code. Kevin worked with the building department to find an agreeable solution. Another thing I really liked about working with Kevin is he doesn't forget you when he finishes the job. He called me a few weeks after completion to make sure everything was okay and came back promptly to correct a couple minor issues. I've already hired Kevin to remodel my other bathroom
Description of Work: Kevin remodeled my basement which included: a bathroom, office, entertainment room, rebuilt stairs and an egress window. My house is older (1925) and had water damage as well as building code issues. Walls were demolished, rebuilt, insulated and textured. Rough plumbing and electrical were replaced.
Organization and trust are Kevin's key attributes. His proposal is detailed and understandable. He takes pride in his tile work and is a perfectionist. The shower turned out beautiful. Painting is not his strong point, other than that all went smoothly and turned out great.
Description of Work: Kevin gutted our small bathroom and laundry room. He put in a new shower pan, shower walls with porcelain tiles and accent granite tiles, plumbing, toilet, vanity and wall cabinets. Also he removed ceramic and sub vinyl floor and painted all walls. Second bath he put in new tile counter top with new sinks and faucets. He also painted the bathroom walls and ceiling.
