Pat, the technician came a few days later, diagnosed the system and was very informative. He explained the gas refrigerant had leaked from the system and he detected the leak was from the A-frame evaporator (heat exchanger) in the furnace. This part would have to be replaced. Also the contactor (off-on switch) in the outside unit had burned contacts and should be replaced plus a delay timer would be a good idea to protect the contactor and compressor. I agreed to the work needed. He called the next day with an estimate of $1240 for the work. I thought the price was high but said yes. It was hot in the house! Six days later he returned for the repairs. He removed the sheet metal above the evaporator, replaced the evaporator and being the new unit was taller than the old one, had to install new sheet metal above. The new contactor and delay unit were installed outside and then checked for leaks and verified there were none. Next a vacuum pump was hooked to the refrigerant line, which he said would require about 1 1/2 hours to evacuate the lines before charging the system with refrigerant. During this "idle" time he rectified the sheet metal from the original installation and re-situated the air cleaner for easier access. Final checkout verified the system was now working well. I am very satisfied with the friendliness and professionalism of Pat, the technician. He diagnosed, then fixed the problem and the sheet metal work looks nice. However, the final price came in almost $300 over the estimate, which I thought was high in the first place. Admittedly, I did not get any other bids, but an overhead burdened labor rate on top of a significant service call charge and fuel surcharge seems high. Then an extra 1 1/4 hour of labor for fixing the sheet metal that was not done right on the original installation didn't make me happy. Therefore, in spite of the good work, I can only give them a "C" on cost.
Description of Work: This company installed a Carrier air conditioner in February 2000 when our new home was only 4 months old. It has performed satisfactorily until August 2008 when it stopped cooling at all. I called Nationwide and requested a service call, and informed them they were the original installer. I also mentioned that I thought the sheet metal work for airflow into an air cleaner hadn't been done properly on the original installation but hadn't thought it worth calling them back, however they could the rectify it now during their service call. They informed me that I would have to pay for a service call, a fuel surcharge, and hourly labor.
