Beware. Tarry Harrison is very optimistic and polite at the outset of a project but back-pedals when things go awry, leaving you, the customer, in the lurch.
Description of Work: Tarry Harrison of "A Native Sprinkler and Landscaping" subcontracted "Cutting Edge Concrete" to re-lay a concrete driveway in Dec 2008, finishing in Jan 2009. The project included regrading, as necessary. Despite our expressing concerns about laying concrete in the Winter, Tarry assured us that there was no problem. Later that year...in one area of the driveway, the concrete was delaminating - literally peeling up and exposing the stones and rubble underneath. This was brought to the attention of the concrete company who presumed it to be caused by the municipality's use of magnesium chloride as a de-icing agent. "Cutting Edge Concrete" indicated they would follow up. They did not. Three years later, this "popping" is happening in larger areas. Vendors who visit the house indicate that new concrete should not age this way. Last year, in 2012, now a member of Angie's List, we contacted one of Angie's List's recommended concrete companies in order to look at repair of the driveway. This company refused to bid on the work, commenting that the driveway was in such bad shape already that it should just be jackhammered up and repoured, not re-sealed. Subsequent concrete experts also concurred and said that driveway could be sealed to, perhaps, stabilize the deterioration but that degradation would continue. "Cutting Edge Concrete" was again contacted and blamed the de-icing chemicals. This on a driveway that has minimal traffic: a few cars a week. The City Public Works Supervisor was then contacted and immediately assessed that the damage was caused by incorrect "blessing" - sealing of the concrete after it is poured - and that the concrete company should warranty their work. As "Cutting Edge Concrete" disclaimed responsibility, we approached the contractor, Tarry Harrison. Tarry, initially, indicated that "something could be worked out" but that he was going to be unavailable with family for a time. That was in November 2012. He has not returned phone calls or emails or communications to his mailing address since that time.

Very well. Tarry stopped by and took at look (~1 hour). He was on time and very professional. Determined there was not a leak in the sprinkler system (yes!), but that we probably needed to change the location of some of the sprinkler heads because they were in odd areas (they were installed by the previous homeowner). He did not push us to do anything extra, which was nice. We plan to use him in the future as we know our system is functional but not efficient.
Description of Work: Look at sprinkler system, pressure was low.

Accepted bid - after pricing out job piecemeal previously - as Tarry (note spelling) assured us that he had encountered all our issues previously and had a comprehensive plan. He didn't advertise, he said, because he didn't NEED to. Bid was detailed and in writing (though in about 8 point type) but during the project add-ons kept racking up, even if they were issues that an experienced landscaper should have provided for at the outset: drainage, slope and width of concrete pads, placement of fence posts, etc. One reference (of three checked) had indeed admited that Tarry treated their project as if it were his own house and you had to REMIND HIM that it was, indeed, YOUR HOUSE. We found that to be true. Most distressing of all was his response when problems were pointed out: incorrect downspout splashblocks procured, several concrete pads cracked after 2 weeks, flooding next to house from downspouts dumping water with no place to drain. Several vendors who came by over the next several months were appalled at some of the poor work and cheap materials: fence posts sunk into concrete footers above grade, no accomodations for water drainage, downspout positioning. While trying patiently to explain problems to Tarry and request him to take corrective steps, he indicated that he was already into his Spring work for his commercial clients. So, in essence, we find we were viewed as Filler Work over the otherwise slow Winter - and dismissed. Spent several hundred dollars remediating his work...with more to come.
Description of Work: Replaced: cracked, subsided concrete driveway; narrow, cracked house skirt and city sidewalk pads; and two areas of fencing.
