Timing is key when determining the best time to hydroseed your lawn. It’s best to hydroseed in the spring or fall due to the already wet conditions of your lawn and the more mild temperatures. 

Your local pro will also offer watering and fertilizer instructions for the months after your application. Make sure you will be available to water it consistently, especially in the first two to three weeks for best results.

The cost of 200 square feet of pea gravel depends on how deep your installation will be. The pea gravel material alone costs between $15 and $75 per cubic yard. You'll need just under two yards to cover 200 square feet to a depth of three inches, for a total cost of between $30 and $150.

Because gravel moves, it requires different maintenance than asphalt or concrete. Here are a few maintenance tips for your gravel driveway. Every few years (or as often as needed):

  • Grade and level your driveway

  • Rake to fill holes and ruts

  • Compact any refilled potholes

  • Remove weeds with herbicide or by hand

  • Spray it with water to reduce the amount of dust kicked up

  • Avoid using a snowplow during winter months

Topsoil should go down first. If the topsoil is next to your house, make sure the grade slopes away from the house to keep water from pooling against your foundation and possibly leaking into your basement or crawl space. Don’t cover your decorative landscape mulch with topsoil as that defeats the purpose of laying down the mulch. If you’re trying to create a certain soil composition to improve plant growth, you’ll likely want compost mixed into the topsoil instead of mulch. Over time, any decorative wood mulch will simply decompose under the topsoil.

You shouldn’t put topsoil over new grass seed. Even though it may seem like this would increase soil contact and help the seeds grow, adding more soil overtop of planted grass seed will only make it harder for water and oxygen to reach the grass seeds. If you want to protect the grass seeds, consider adding a thin layer of organic matter, such as straw or hay.
