We were given a bid/estimate of work to be done at the jobsite for our new home. That bid/estimate came in at $12,953.00. However they covered themselves because at the top of the estimate they stated that all work would be done by the hour. Chiddix Brothers were met several times at the job site so they knew what they were expected to do – no surprises. They held themselves out as professionals. When the invoice came in at $21,304.48 it was quite a shock. That is 40% more which to me is quite a spread. This was with no boulders to be removed.. When I called Chiddix Brothers office to ask if this was correct and was there anything that could be done I was called by Seth Chiddix. I told Seth that after reviewing the billing the item that seemed out of proportion was the trucking. I told Seth I had sat at the jobsite watching for about an hour and they were only putting on scoop from the loader in each truck Seth became angry and said that was just not true and they always put in at least 2-3 scoops in each truck. If I was saying that then I must need remedial arithmetic to learn 1 from 3 and probably needed glasses. If you are getting an excavation bid go to someone else. I would never recommend them to anyone. UPDATE: My husband and I met with the job superintendent Mr. Tony Dinwiddie for a written bid. We did not specifically request a “no trucking fees” be included in the Chiddixes’ bid. We specifically requested that as much soil be stockpiled on the building site as possible. I was the one who located a dump site less than 15 minutes from our lot where excess soil could be stockpiled. This complaint comes down to the fact that neither Mr. or Mrs. Chiddix were on the job site when the soil was being removed. It was I who sat there and observed the soil being loaded one scoop at a time into the dump truck. If the driver of one of the dump trucks remained there past one scoop being loaded into his vehicle, the loader driver beeped his horn and informed the driver to move on for the next dump truck. It should be noted that the soil was free of any tree stumps and there were no boulders to be moved from the site. Neither my husband nor I at any time took this complaint to such an unprofessional level as calling either Mr. or Mrs. Chiddix a liar. All I informed him was that I was personally on the job site when the events above-described took place. It was our understanding that the dump trucks could take three scoops of soil rather than one scoop of soil. Hence, the final bid for trucking was completely unrealistic. Although we would like to discuss this matter with the various truck drivers, I suspect they will feel uncomfortable coming forward as they would like to continue their working relationship with the Chiddixes. Respectfully submitted,

Response from CHIDDIX BROTHERS EXCAVATION
She contacted our company for an estimate for the jobs she describes. We were the third company she had contacted for an estimate. She specifically requested that we estimate the job with no trucking to be accounted for. She simply wanted an estimate for the dirt work. Our superintendent (as did the two other excavating companies) told her at that time that she would have trucking for export-no surprises. She had to export the material off of the lot due to a “no disturb zone”. We are not allowed to stockpile any material in these areas. There should have been no surprises for her that there was trucking. It was told to her many, many times. Even her contractor told her that all three excavation companies said the same thing and we must know what we are talking about. This was the specific reason the estimate was presented as an estimate only and that work would be billed on an hourly basis. She called our office once she received the bill and was upset over the truck prices. She stated that she watched as our operator loaded tandems with only one bucket per truck---a full load is three buckets. She spoke with Seth and he told her that if it were stumps or boulders that were being loaded (we exported 4 loads of stumps) then indeed there may have been “one bucket” as they are heavier and bulkier. (By law tandems can only haul a maximum of 15 tons.) However, if it was simply dirt, they would have put three buckets on. He contacted our superintendent (who was the operator on the job) and asked him about the size of the house etc. Computing the cubic yards coming out of the basement and amount of material that we were able to squeeze onto the lot (out of the no-disturb areas so we wouldn’t have to export)-the load count of 127 loads equated exactly to what it would be at three buckets per load. He even went to far as to compute the amount of material imported at backfill given the amount of material already onsite and it equated exactly. Seth tried to explain to her that if indeed only one bucket were put in each tandem then the amount of loads would have been triple given the mathematics. She refused to calmly and rationally go over the figures and see that what she was stating was mathematically impossible. Seth offered to have her speak with an engineer or other professional to verify the figures. She, of course, refused. We have been in business for almost 17 years. Our builders (all of whom are respected and well known in the community) respect us and can authenticate our veracity. We absolutely stand by the integrity and truthfulness of our operator and our subcontracted truck drivers. We can offer their phone numbers and contact information to Angie’s List if you would like to contact them as well. We can offer the names of the other excavating contractors as well and they can substantiate that our numbers are accurate and reasonable. They can also substantiate that they told her the same thing about export on her lot. She began getting very upset and threatened that she would see to it that we would never work in this town again. It seems very unfair that someone can report an ethical, professional business when the facts of the case support our position. As she said “They held themselves out as professionals.”—we stand by that. We are professionals.
