We selected Nancy and Beckony as one of three companies to provide a plan and estimate for a complete kitchen remodel and master bath upgrade for a new home purchase. We were very impressed by Nancy and all of her efforts to determine what our new kitchen would look like. She came to our current house to observe how we used our kitchen and listened well to what we desired in a dream kitchen. She arrived at the new house with two assistants to measure the kitchen space and again listened and took notes about what we wanted the space to be. She expressed the same enthusiasm about the master bath upgrade. After we waited almost three weeks, she was finally ready with her proposal. She provided plans printed on paper with no computer or visual presentation of how the space would look. What we saw failed to take into account almost any of our requests. She essentially kept the kitchen space as it is and just plugged in new cabinets. There was no creativity or originality; on one wall where we specifically said we didn't want a china hutch she put in a china hutch. As we were expressing concern about her proposal she announced that she had been very busy and had just put the plans together the night before. It was obvious that there was little effort put into the design. Additionally, her estimate was higher than the budget amount we had told her. We like Nancy and were impressed by her social and personal connection, and her personality almost won us over, but we were not impressed by her professional design. We opted against choosing her for our project. A few days later when she pressured us for a reason we told her price was a major consideration; she lowered her estimate substantially at that point. While her new price was more reasonable we couldn't get over the poor design and failure to incorporate our basic requests.
Description of Work: Beckony developed plans and estimate foe a complete kitchen remodel.

Response from BECKONY KITCHENS & BATHS
We met [member name removed] and [member name removed] at a home show and they expressed interest in having us look at a home that they had recently purchased and wished to remodel. As they already had a General Contractor, we were asked only to provide designs and supply cabinetry materials for the following rooms: Kitchen, Dining Room, Entertainment Center, Master Bath, Powder Bath, Laundry Room, LL Bath, and LL Bar. According to our records, we met with them at the jobsite on January 15 (2013) at 3:00 PM to review their new home. The next morning, on January 16 at 8 30 AM we visited their existing home. We returned to the jobsite again on January 22 at 1:30 PM to measure the rooms and to take pictures. The next meeting was scheduled for Feb 4 at 3:00 PM in our showroom with the Wilsons and their Contractor, to review initial designs. At Beckony Kitchens & Baths, we specifically review the designs on paper in the beginning because it enables the clients to focus on the design itself and not get caught up in the “wow-factor” of a computer-colorized rendering. All design work is done on a computer and the clients review a complete set of floor plans, elevations and 3-D perspective drawings. The design process was begun the day after the site-measure. We still have all of the designs and revisions produced along the way -- a total of 15 designs, 7 for the kitchen/dining, 5 for the Master Bath and one for each of the other rooms. This level of output required considerable time and effort, and did not just happen the night before the review meeting. As their main concern was the price, the designs that would have been over their budget were not reviewed. At Beckony Kitchens & Baths, we have a comprehensive 4-page interview questionnaire that we fill out during the face-to-face initial meeting, as part of our evaluation of clients’ needs; this, along with “as-existing” jobsite pictures and detailed site space measurements, becomes a basis (but not a boundary) of our designs. Our mission is to determine the individuality, needs and wants of our clients and let those determinants design the space. Our work on the Lirette-Wilson project was consistent with that mission. The Wilsons and their Contractor determined which walls were to stay and which walls could be moved. In one of our designs, the main wall of the kitchen was moved back to accommodate a pantry behind it and to make room for a larger island. Unless specifically requested by the client, we do not just “replace cabinetry” where it was originally. We priced their cabinetry in a base-price-plus-options format, to allow them to choose. After considering the initial pricing, they came back to us with a “not-to-exceed” number. We redesigned some of the rooms and eliminated others. We called them to tell them we could reach their budget and to enable them to know that there were options included. The [member name removed] had told us in the early stages of all of this that their Contractor already had a preferred design firm (not us), and in the end they decided to go with another firm (we do not know who). It has been our experience that when a client is interviewing more than one design firm, the same information is often not given to all firms. This is even more true when a “favorite” firm has already been selected prior to interviewing alternate firms. It is frequently also difficult for clients to keep track of the details of the often very-different design proposals they have been offered from multiple firms. Beckony Kitchens & Baths has done everything that the Wilsons asked us to do, and more, in terms of both design and service, and in a timely manner. Through all of our 13 years in business, our only mission has been (and is) to fulfill the heartfelt desires of our clients.
