Description of Work: Atlantic installed a new air conditioner in my home.

Description of Work: Darrell Allen of Atlantic Heating and A/C did a thorough assessment of our poorly performing heating/AC system. He quickly assessed that the problem mainly had to do with poor design of vents and return air ducts along with an oversized AC system that had been installed by the previous owners. I'm sure the unit was recommended to them by an HVAC contractor and they made the costly investment in good faith that it would correct the intolerable heat gain under a vaulted ceiling. Instead, because the unit was so mismatched to the furnace and duct work, the new unit accomplished nothing. Bigger isn't better. Rather than selling us a new unit, Darrell worked hard to improve the function of the equipment we already had while recommending changes that we could make over time. All of these changes would be necessary to improve function even if we bought a new unit (the overall system design is more important than a stand-alone unit). These changes included sealing leaks and adding insulation to the attic to significantly increase R value, along with adding a R-38 rated, well insulated whole house fan to remove heat gain and compensate for a lack of return air ducts. He found and repaired a large leak in the trunk line connecting to the furnace - no one else had noticed this in the 26 years since the house had been built - and added what I believe were called "jump vents" in the bedrooms to improve overall air flow. He tweaked the AC unit so it wouldn't freeze up and thus our old equipment performed much better than before. All this made a noticeable difference. Eventually we'll replace both the furnace and A/C unit and when we do we'll hire Atlantic. Darrell will sell us a properly sized A/C unit that will be much more effective. The other guys just want to sell expensive equipment without correcting underlying problems with the HVAC design or locate simple defects in the system. Darrell enjoys finding ways to improve what you already have - this was a breath of fresh air. He's very knowledgable, great to work with and the pricing is fair. I'll never call the other guys again.
