I don't think Alan's Automotive has the ability to diagnose problems very good. They are very friendly and that makes you feel like they know what they are doing. I spent a lot of money I probably didn't have to. When I asked them if the mass sensor could be cleaned they said no way, which was incorrect. Any good mechanic would know that. I didn't know much about diesels back then and feel like I was taken advantage of. I would get a second opinion before I spent very much money with them. Their prices were a little high. I won't say I would not recommend them, but if it's not a simple fix I would not to go to them.
Description of Work: My 2005 GMC duramax was overheating. Alan's said the radiator needed to be flushed and washed on the outside and replace a pulley which they did. ($400) The truck stopped overheating, but the temperature would go up and the fan would come on and cool the temp down and it would do this over and over. That was the first time I took the truck there. The second time I took the truck there it was having vapor lock like issue, which diesels don't have. Alan's looked at the truck and ran the same computer checks that they ran a couple weeks earlier($125) when I had the overheating problems. They said my mass sensor ($450) was bad and I had 4 bad injectors ($4400). I don't know why they didn't find that when they had it on the computer the first time. Anyway I didn't have them do the work and found out that for $8.00 Autozone sells Mass sensor cleaner and it is really easy to clean the sensor. I lost a little confidence in the shop by now and went to a different shop for a second opinion on the injectors and they came back as all good. The vapor lock symptoms ended up being a bad valve in the fuel filter housing which is what they were suppose to fix in the first place. I had a suspicion that was the problem, but the mechanic said it was the injectors and refused to check it. I had that fixed and I have been driving the truck for almost five months and have had no problem's. Later I found out that my thermostats were bad and I replaced them and the temp stays at the same temp and the fan does not come on like it did after they tried to fix it. I don't know why they didn't figure that out.

They do diesel trucks, but they do auto repair too. Their price is a little high. I get my truck in there when I need to and get done what I need done, and they are really good. I do not have any complaints with them

I found out about Alan's a few years ago and have used them for the last couple of years to perform work on my 2000 F-350 diesel truck. The first several times I was there I felt very good about their service with the exception that their price was pretty high. OK, at least I was getting realiable mechanic work. Then I started having some problems with the electronics and took my truck to them a couple of times for and quot;repairsand quot;. Each time they told me they found the problem but each time the problem either came back or another electronic problem surfaced very quickly. Then one night the horn started blaring all by itself and wouldn't shut off. The horns evernually burned out (they were under warranty because the last time Alan repaired the truck they replaced the horns). I brought the truck into them the next day and a few hours later I got a call from Alan telling me that my windshield was leaking and causing the fuse box which is located under the dash to short. He said he and quot;had the fusebox in front of him and it's corroded.and quot; This sounded really odd to me because I had looked in the fuse box and didn't see any problems with the fuses but, hey, maybe I missed something. Then I asked Alan for an estimate and he told me the fuse box and all the fuses were about $400 and the windshield would be about $600 to replace. WHAT? $600 for a windshield? $400 for a fuse box? I told him to put the truck back together and I would come get it. He really pushed HARD for me to repair it but I stood firm. Picked up the truck a few hours later and they charged me for and quot;diagnosticsand quot; which I had already paid for twice before in the previous month. You would think their diagnostice would have showed something? When I picked up the truck Alan wasn't there but I asked the mechanic how they determined the windshield leaked. He told me they had someone working there that used to work for Ford and he and quot;knew of this problem.and quot; Then I asked if they confirmed it with a water test of some kind. Nope, the mechanic and quot;knewand quot;. When I got the truck home I took the fuse box cover off and took a look. No corrosion and the box hadn't been cleaned like I was told it was because there was dust and some particles in there that I took photos of. I blew it out with air and it's been fine ever since. Strangely enough, about 2 months later my windshield sustained rock damage and I had it replaced. Rainbow Auto Glass (555 Ford Street, near Peterson AFB) did it for $199 TOTAL and they came to my house! USA made windshield also - which is my first choice. Haven't been back to Alan's since and frankly can't find a good diesel mechanic anywhere in the area. Alan is a nice man and hardworking but from my experience his mechanics are not up to doing anything more than basic mechanic work on diesels.
Description of Work: Used them several times to perform work on my 2000 F-350 Diesel Truck. This visit was for electrical problems I was having.

I used Alan's for years and thought I had found a reliable diesel mechanic for routine mainteance. Then I had some problems with the electronics in my diesel truck and brought it to Alans for troubleshooting and repair. To get to the point, they could not adequately troubleshoot and isolate the problem(s). I had to bring the truck back to them at least three times and one of the times I had to have it towed. I had started to bring my BMW to Alan's also but after some transmission work and rework I decided enought was enough and found another mechanic. Alan is honest and hardworking but his mechanics are not up to doing difficult work on diesels or regular cars for that matter. Far too much rework is required.
Description of Work: Routine diesel service. Oil change, check air filter, etc. However, I had used Alans for major repair work on my Ford F-250 also.

Overall, I was a little surprised at the higher cost to have this work completed. This is my first diesel vehicle and I expected any work on it to have a bit of a premium (vs. a gas vehicle). However, they charge $150 diagnostic fee in addition to the actual work - parts and labor bringing my total for the correction of two leaking hoses/lines to $440. This was more than I was honestly expecting and I was not told upfront about the $150 diagnostic fee which may have caused me to first call around for competitive pricing. Perhaps all shops charge this fee for diesels? I don't know... In my mind I was guessing this would be a $250 maximum job. However, all said and done, I like them, they seemed like a very nice family operation and I believe they are trustworthy and simply running a fair business. I will be back for future service, though next time I will make sure I understand any upfront costs.
Description of Work: I brought in my newly acquired 2000 Ford Excursion Limited 7.3 Turbodiesel to have them repair a fuel leak, transmission cooler return line leak, and perform a full safety inspection to understand any other areas I should be concerned about. Since I didn't have anyone inspect the vehicle before I purchased, I wanted to make sure this was in safe condition since I have four children that will be regularly in this beast. Alan called me within a short time of dropping it off to confirm the service I wanted done. He then called me back about an hour later to confirm the issues and that they would be a relatively easy fix. I asked him to perform the safety inspection as well. The good news is that he confirmed the vehicle was in very good shape, other than a needed oil change (which I elected to do myself) and was low on coolant (they topped off for a fee). He advised I have the upper/lower ball joints replaced with Moog very soon. At $950 I'll have to wait a bit to have the finances to cover this, and this price is the going rate from later research I've done.
