They were really good. I would consider using them in the future. We plan not to do the project so I didn't get a final estimate from them.

They do great work and are really nice people. They always clean up well after the work is complete. Also, Dixon's prices are very competitive. They are always very timely. I will use them again in the future for other projects.
Description of Work: I have Dixon's Custom Home Solutions several times for things around my home. Some things they have done for me: built new wall in my home, built a new back porch and also done some work on the roof.

We have been using Dixon Custom Home solutions for years, and they have always done an amazing job. Our house is old (1910's) and had a weird old toilet stall in the basement (heard that it was for the "help" who were shoveling coal around). Dixon remodeled this into a very nice half bath with a new toilet, new sink and plumbing, externally vented fan, new framing and drywall, new window trim and baseboard trim, new lighting, built in shelf, and new tile floor. The new space is modernized, but they stayed consistent with the arts and crafts style of the house. It was a tricky, small, basement space, but David did a great job, and had everything done in a few days. David and his associates are professional, skilled, efficient, friendly, and not creepy (which is key when people are working around your family for days). They do great work at the most competitive prices. Dixon won us over when they finished our basement, and is always the first place we call when our house needs any work.
Description of Work: Renovated a basement toilet stall into a half bath.

A pleasant phone call established a quick time for a visit to review the proposed job and describe what attributes we would need for fans in our high ceiling condo. An estimate was provided, and I called back to schedule a specific day. David was a bit delayed which he explained in a phone call. He arrived and went right to work assembling and installing the fans and was done in about 4 hours, including taking time to change the alarm batteries on the high ceilings. His manner was friendly and informative and his work was done well. We are very pleased and will call them again as needs arise.
Description of Work: David installed three ceiling fans and changed 3 smoke alarm backup batteries.

Installation went fine, David removed the old fan 4" ducting. the fan that I purchased was a 6" duct. So we agreed to run a vent line to the exterior wall. Then unfortunately the new fan was deeper than the builder grade fan that was in the bathroom, not a big deal except that the plumbing vent tube ran directly over the old fan, So David had to get more materials and relocate the vent pipe up a couple more inches. It was really labor intensive since he had to crawl in the attic a few times to run the pipe and cut a new vent on the exterior of the house and mount a new exhaust vent. Which is fine by me since I was not the one going in the attic. I am very pleased with the work on the project and would have them back out again to do other jobs.
Description of Work: I was having a new bathroom fan installed in the Master Bath upstairs. Fan was purchased by myself already. Typical installation cost quoted by them was going to be 175.00 for installation.

David arrived at the agreed upon time and after a brief discussion started in on the replacement. I mostly stayed in the other room doing other things, and he did his best to let me know how his endeavors were proceeding. At one point he asked me to come have a look at the way the sink was sitting in the cabinet. He showed me how the sink was bowed ever so slightly leaving gaps. Given the way it was designed and counting on rather flimsy clips to pull the sink down flush with the countertop, he had tightened the screws as much as possible and wanted me to be aware of it. I really had to look closely to see what he was concerned about because it was so subtle, but could be an issue. He explained the options of getting another sink if I wanted, or he would continue and apply white silicone around the edge, my call. I chose to continue since it wasn't critical. He went ahead and hooked up all the water lines, tested, and cautioned that we shouldn't use the sink for twelve hours until the silicone was completely dried. We waited and it looks and works great. Overall, he did a fine job and I would seek his assistance in the future.
Description of Work: Replaced the old kitchen sink and hardware with a new one provided by us.

I requested an estimate for a significant remodel. I was less than impressed with the initial visit because the owner kept interrrupting. It took a month longer than promised and I was told by the person on the phone that they turned the answering machine off because so many people had been calling. When I did get it, there was no follow up. Fortunately I found another contractor who has provided excellent service and done a great job. I suppose, based on other surveys in this listing, there will be some sort of elaborate response to my posting. Oh well...that should tell you something in and of itself.

It took a while to get the first estimate but that was fine. The estimate was wrong, and did not have the right specs for my kitchen, but that was changed and it was fine. He suggested a quartz counter top and that I went to Menards to pick it out. Everything was going well. The first delivery of counter tops was incorrect, one side was too small. He recognized that right away and said it would need to be replaced. By the time they had gotten to the countertops, things like the backsplash and sink was already installed. Menards was going to replace a piece of countertop that had been polished on the wrong side. I waited 2 or 3 weeks and he came back and installed everything fine. The small piece had still been polished on the wrong side again and Menards said they need to replace both pieces of countertop. I was concerned that the backsplash, sink, faucets would be damaged when replacing the countertops. He called to let me know the pieces were in and he would come Friday to put the pieces in. I had come in to check on the work. He showed me the work they had done, but he had put the old piece in because he thought that would be adequate because the new piece had not yet been delivered.. I told him it would not. I called my brother in law to come take a look because I had to leave. He said the countertop was not acceptable. In the mean time Menards had delivered the correct pieces, but not the installation kit. I had given him a check in good faith that the project would be done. He cashed the check on Monday 10/2 but the work had not been finished. I spoke to his wife and she apologized for cashing the check because she thought the work was done. He no longer has his equipment at my house and I wanted to make sure he was coming back to finish the job. His wife took offense and hung up on me.
Description of Work: I called him to get an estimate to do a cosmetic remodel of my kitchen. I had a drop in stove that I wanted to take out and replace with a new stove.

Response from Dixon's Custom Home Solutions
Menards has contacted this home owner to explain their delay in the counter top. Everything we had control of was done to her satisfaction (flooring, stove, range, lights, back splash). We installed the counter top and realized it was wrong. Menards replaced it. However they left out the seam kit (a must have) so we could not re-install it. The check that was given was $1,600 and only $600 was for the counter top. I had cashed the check not realizing I was not supposed to "in the homeowners eyes". She called emotional and began with "you cashed my check, you took the materials, I don't think you are coming back. I know David was upset with me I am not stupid, I want an exact date you are going to return! You cashed my check!" I said let me call Menards and find out when the material will be in. I then said I can send you a refund check until the work is complete and regarding the material Dave and your brother.. I was interrupted again ' I don't even have a brother he is my BROTHER IN LAW" I said ok she cut me off again recharged about the check and materials. I was trying to explain that the materials had not been removed from her home as she accused but were in fact in her garage where her brother-in-law had asked us to place them (safe but out of the way). At this point homeowner stated 'You don't want to make me call Angie's list, I know the owner". At that point I explained that making threats had made our conversation unproductive. I hung up and immediately called our Menards representative who called her and attempted to explain that it was in fact their fault and they would be correcting the situation. In the meantime homeowner called back and left a message on my machine saying if we didn't want to do the work then refund the money for work not completed. After talking to my business partner and Menards we decided to do that. I sent her a message and explained she did in fact have the material. I was sorry the conversation was so emotional for her. Because she had resorted to threatening us I would be taking her option of refunding her installation money for her to hire another contractor and I would continue to work with Menards to get her the seam kit. I don't know why this is an unresolved dispute because what she said she wanted was the installation money and that has been sent in the mail via check. As a business owner for over 10 years it is my experience that once a person becomes frustrated and fixated on a point that they start threatening you the workplace becomes hostile and there is simply nothing you can do to satisfy the person. So as a company we have done the one thing she stated would satisfy her and that is refund the money. Again let me state that the entire rest of the job (electrical, flooring, stove, range, backsplash) was all done to her complete satisfaction. Of course, in her anger none of that was mentioned. As I said, you focus on what you are consumed with. Interestinly enough if this homeowner would have calmed down and listened to me instead of cutting me off with every sentence she would have heard, I am sending you a check, the materials are in fact in your garage, I am calling Menards to get an exact date. I refuse to be verbally screamed at, abused or harrassed and I won't have other members of my company endure that treatment either.

Though we had not planned to have the crew do so much work, we are glad they were here. Their knowledge of the situation saved us from doing it again in years to come. The damage from a water leak (from the dishwasher) caused mold and crumbling of the cabinets from the backside. We are fortunate that the damage was discovered.
Description of Work: They were here to replace our kitchen flooring and found the floor joists, supports, cabinets, drywall in serious need of repair. In just 5 days, we had an entirely new kitchen with beautiful cabinets, upper and lower, new dry wall and a very firm floor again. The flooring is beautiful and well done.

Very quick response when I contacted them for an estimate. Given an estimate on the phone based on size of the porch- I also stated the door would need repaired or replaced. The workers were very professional. The porch door was replaced but does not latch closed. The whole screen looks great & has remained intact with the exception of the door that needed re-screened the following year. The total price ended up being more than the estimate provided over the phone. My only suggestion is that it might be better to provide an estimate after seeing the area to give the customer a better idea of what is to come.

Dave arrived on time and estimated necessary work. Left for just a few minutes to buy parts and returned quickly to finish repair to wiring. Gave us estimates and advice for repairs for our kitchen. Overall, we couldn't have asked for more. The pricing was very fair - much lower than anticipated. We had asked for quotes from other companies and Dixson's was only 18% of the cost of the other electrical estimates. We are very happy with the results and will call Dixson's again. Dave is very professional, friendly, and quick to offer alternate solutions.

I called today with the problem of the stove arriving and the outlet being 220 instead of 110 that is needed for the new stove. I was surprised that they were able to show up this afternoon to take care of me. David even hooked the stove up to the gas and slid it into place when he was done. Everything went smoothly. David Dixon showed up to give me the quote. He was friendly and looked at my problems carefully. His estimate came in at a price that caused me to say let's do it right then. His crew were very meticulous in getting my floor level. The rotted part near the back door was cut out enough past any rot and patched fine (it will be covered with flooring so not a big deal either way to me). I will use Dixon in the future since everything went smoothly and was at a price I felt was fair.

Dixon's was not selected to perform work. I was searching for someone to replace an existing sliding glass door with either a salvaged door or a new french door. I called and spoke with Mr. Dixon on 11/1 about the proposed project. Over the phone he discussed various concerns but assured me that the work could be done. A consultation was scheduled for 11/4. A half hour after the schedule the appointment no one showed and no one called. I called the office number and asked if the appointment was still scheduled or if something had come up. I never received a response or any other communication.

I am unaware of who this customer is. Furtheremore, we are a family owned company. We have a disabled son. Our son had a surgery scheduled for 11/4. This major surgery was scheduled 3 weeks in advance. There is no way we had a consultation scheduled for this date. I believe that perhaps another company was addressing this issue and in fact it was not our company.

Overall, I was mostly satisfied. Not being a plumber, I had no basis for checking whether the plumbing in the new sink was done correctly, or not. Over time, I began to notice a smell coming from the kitchen sink that became overwhelming. I contacted my plumber of choice, Robys. They came out and looked at the plumbing under the sink. Together, with Robys, we examined what Dixon had done and we were both surprised to find that the plumbing did not include an air vent. Additionally, we barely touched the pipe under the disposal and it came out of the disposal ... again, with almost no effort. I didn't want anything from Dixon's other than to let them know that I had a problem. Here is what I wrote: A few years ago, you did some kitchen remodeling for me. I wanted to let you know about some recent issues I had with whoever you had install my sink and the plumbing under the cabinet. I was noticing a terrible smell from the kitchen sink when I would run water in the master bath. The smell was so bad, it filled the entire kitchen with the smell. The other day, I decided to look under the kitchen sink. When I looked at the pipes that your guy built under the sink, I quickly realized that he had done a bad install. I contacted Brad Roby immediately and had them come out yesterday. He looked at it and agreed with me that the plumbing job was wrong and, in fact, a pipe for gas to escape had not even been installed in the job. In looking at the connection to the garbage disposal unit, the pipe was barely being held on ? barely touching it, it moved excessively and with a slight pull, was completely dislodged. I was fortunate that I found this problem before any damage had occurred. It cost me $269 with my Angie?s List discount coupon, but now I know the problem is fixed. Roby?s could not believe it, although they stated that they see this type of thing all too often. He stated that whoever installed the pipes under the sink did not know what they were doing. I am not a plumber and could tell that, too. Unfortunately, a lot of time has passed since I hired you to do the work in my kitchen. Nonetheless, I wanted to let you know how disappointed I am in the quality of the plumbing job your company did. Now that it is fixed, there is no more smell and the sink drains like it is supposed to. The drainage from one side of the sink was slow ? even from the day your team did the install, but I figured that it was supposed to be that way. I was wrong. Your team had not installed a critical pipe from the disposal unit to another pipe that would allow for gases to escape properly. I have not contacted Angie?s List to do an update because I wanted to hear from you first. Thank you. I found Reagan Dixon's response rather defensive. She wrote: Our records indicate our service provided to you was 4 1/2 years ago. Our service warranty is 1 year. First, because you did not bring this to our attention with our warranty time I am unable to address your E-mail at this time. Second, because we were not allowed to view the plumbing before another contractor changed it, it is impossible for me (4 1/2 years later) to discuss your other contractors claims. I wrote back to Reagan to remind her that I didn't ask anything of Dixon's. I simply wanted to let them know. Based on the rather cold and defensive response from Reagan Dixon, and seeing how they respond to their customers after 4 1/2 years, I cannot imagine ever doing business with them again.

This client had this work completed in 2008. The plumbing either leaks/works immediately or it does not. But just in case we offer a 1 year no hassle warranty. He did not notice any issues for over 3 years. The work was out of well past the warranty time. Additionally, we were not called and offered and opportunity to investigate if this was even possibly an issue on our side.
