Faced with a short timeline and lots to do, they were very accomodating and flexible even staying very late one evening to reset a toilet after the firm we hired to do flooring ran behind schedule just to ensure we could have at least one bathroom functioning. The team is prompt and courteous and proactively communicated with other contractors on site. I don't know how we would have done it without Dixon's.
Description of Work: Dixon's provided a variety of handyman, plumbing and carpentry work for us as we needed to make repairs in preparation for putting our house on the market. Services ranged from drywall repair, door replacement, complete refurbish of screened in porch and odds and ends.
These people are always on time arriving. They are neat and clean up any mess that is made (if necessary). Very congenial. You just tell them the problem and they take over and do the work and it is fine and that's it! Nice feeling.
Description of Work: 1. Replaced faucets and water spout for bathroom tub. 2. Secured one tile by tub. 3. Adjust door closing to upstairs. 4. Clean down spouts.

I purchased a flat-screen television and contacted this company to install the appropriate outlets and to install the television, as well. They also were to hide the wiring in the wall. When I talked to the lady at Dixon's Custom Home Solutions and stated that one person would come and would need another person to come and assist with mounting the television and hiding the wires. The second person should have only been out here for an hour or two. She quoted me the prices and we decided to go with the installation. Right before the installation I had a death in the family and was unable to be at the house for the installation. My daughter met them at the house for the installation and knew where I wanted the television over my fireplace. The job was completed and when I arrived home and showed me the bill for $1129. They charged me for 6.5 hours for the first person and 5.5 for the second person. I called regarding the bill and they acknowledged they charged me wrong and refunded me what they over charged me ($240.00). I called again, because it turned out that the television was installed off center. My daughter was suppose to meet them a second time to correct the mounting of the television. My daughter s child was ill and could not make it to the appointment. She called and left a message stating that no one could be there for the appointment and to please call back to reschedule. I received a call from the technician stating that he was at my home and no one was there. I notified him that we could not make it and left a message stating that earlier and we needed to reschedule it. He said that he was not in a position to reschedule over the phone. I waited for a return call from Dixon's and did not receive a call to reschedule. I left a few messages and was finally contacted by david on a Sunday. He stated that he understood that I felt there was a problem with the installation and stated they would come out to correct it for $80 because he came one time for no charge, (the time I called to tell him I could not make it due to family sickness). He said the message on the answering machine was there at 10:00am. At that time I said that was not true because I know and I have witnesses that the phone call was made right after 8am and they were due to come out at 8:45. This was a family situation (an illness) and we did the best we could to cancel the appt. I also said that I was not happy with the end result and that I guess I would contact Angie's List and or the Better Business Bureau. The lady from Dixon's Custom Home Solutions unbeknownst to me was on the phone with us; she said that we were arguing back and forth. She raised her voice and stated that I was upset. I asked her to quit yelling at me. She then hung up the phone on me.
Description of Work: Installed an outlet and mounted a television above fireplace and hide wires in wall.

Response from Dixon's Custom Home Solutions
The member contacted our office regarding scheduling the installation of a flat screen tv and running the wiring for the tv and related components behind the drywall. I explained to her at this time that a 2nd man would be needed to help 'feed' the wires through the wall and to support the large tv as it was being mounted. I told her that I could not guarantee a time frame for the completion of the project. However, because this project would take less than 8 hours it would be considered a service call a subject to our service call billing rates. She agreed to the rates. She scheduled the appt a week in advance. I explained at that time that should she choose to cancel or change the appt she would need to give us 24 hours notice. She replied 'OK'. I called the day before to confirm the arrival time of 8:30 A.M. This was acknowledged. I had 2 men dispatched and they arrived at 8:30 yet no one was home. She stated that she had her daughter coming and that she left a message that morning around 8 to let us know she would be around 15 minutes late (8:45). My men were paid by me to wait for her representative to arrive. Our Angie's List menu as well as our voice mail clearly states that calls may take up to 24 hours to be returned and our office hours are from 9:00 - 4:30 Mon- Fri. We completed the job, her adult daughter said everything was fine and wrote a check to cover the bill. The next day I received a call from the member stating the billing seemed to be in error and that her tv was not centered over the fireplace it was centered between the 2 windows surrounding the fireplace. I checked the bill and apologized for the error and explained that we would be happy to return at no charge to refund her the over charged amount and to move the TV to where she would like it. I also explained again that 2 men would be needed due to the weight of the TV being mounted. She asked for the appt to be at 8:45 so her daughter could meet us again. I again paid 2 men to go to the house. No one showed. We put the refund in the mail. When she was contacted she stated her daughter left a message that her granddaughter was sick and she couldn't make the appt. The message was left at 8:18 A.M. Less than 30 minutes notice to cancel the appt and outside of our office time parameters. Upon speaking with her about this she said she couldn't help it if we didn't have someone there to answer her calls 24 hours a day. We told her that we would be happy to come and rectify the situation to her satisfaction however because I have to pay my men to come to the appt and to wait, gas, etc., we would charge an $80 fee for this service. Not realizing this was a conference call between me and the co-owner she began lying about my promises of the initial billing. She then began stating that it was our fault and she couldn't help it if she had a 'HELLO, EMERGENCY'. At which point I entered the conversation and explained that yelling emergency and arguing about our office hours was in no way reaching a satisfactory agreement. I also confronted her about the lies that she claimed I said. She changed her story as to our first conversation back to the truth. When I told her the reason we would have to charge $80 was to cover the wages that we had paid out she said her son would hold up one end of the TV. Unfortunately our insurance company will not allow that. She then became very angry and said she would contact Angie’s List, the Better Business Bureau and whoever else would listen to her. I told her that if that was her stance then we had nothing further to discuss and to have a good day. At that point we disconnected the call. We did make a trip, at our cost to move the TV even though her grown daughter had said the initial placement of the TV was ok. We honestly wanted to make her happy. However when she cancels an appt knowing we need 24 hours notice within 30 minutes of the scheduled time my men have already been dispatched. She is unwilling to pay for her failure to acknowledge the 15 minutes we waited while she was late for the 1st appt or the time we lost when she cancelled the 2nd. I am not willing to go back a 3rd time and wait or be cancelled. This does cost me money. Her adult daughter agreed to the placement of the TV initially. At this point we are unwilling to go back for free.

If we decided that we didn't really like it there, he'd move the vent to come out the back. The next day, his employee vented it out the back and replaced the control switch with a timed control switch. The baseboard and drywall were replaced without incident. The stair treads, risers and base trim at the side of the stairs were also installed. They looked okay. There were numerous small gaps between all the edges which I know is to be expected because no one can cut everything exactly right, etc. However, the upper part of the trim on the right had side had been installed in to different pieces. Evidently, it was too difficult to cut it all as one piece. Again, I didn't have a problem with that per say. It was the fact that they had damaged a little bit of the drywall in the process and had not repaired it. They also had not made any attempt to sand down and/or caulk the place where the two pieces of wood met. It did not look nice at all. When I asked the employee (David was not here on that day) about filling the nail holes and small gaps in the stair treads, he recommended some types of putty that I could get at the hardware store. At that point, I called Dixon's office hoping to talk to David about some of these issues. He was not in but I left a detailed message with the receptionist saying that I didn't think that it should be our responsibility to repair the damage to the drywall in our shower room and couldn't they also take some putty and/or caulk and fill the nail holes, and gaps in the treads etc. to make the stairs look more finished. I never got a call back but the employee that was still there came to me a few minutes later and asked for some paint for our shower room. He also filled the nail holes with putty and caulked 2 of the bigger gaps around the stair treads, not all of them by any means. I guess for the price that we paid for this job, I expected to have the job completed to our original arrangement and to not to have to follow them around, making sure that everything was being done as discussed. I certainly don't feel that I should have had to ask to have them repair the drywall damage in our shower room or to fill cracks and nail holes. The drywall at the stairs never got repaired/painted and there is still drywall dust in the shower room, sitting on top of the wall tiles where it fell during there installation of the exhaust fan.
Description of Work: Dixon's replaced 6' of 1X8" baseboard and the drywall behind the baseboard ($190), installed an exhaust fan, that we already had, in our shower room and a timed control switch for it ($568) and removed 6 stair treads, installed new stair treads that we bought from another vendor, provided and installed 7 paint grade risers and provided and installed base trim on each side of stair stringers ($1160). Even though they were the most expensive, we chose Dixon's for this job out of the 4 estimates that we had gotten because we liked what they had to say about the job and they seemed to be very confident that they could do it to our specifications. The estimate went off without a hitch. David, the owner, did the estimate himself. We needed the exhaust fan installed in the shower room but needed to have it vented out the back of the roof, not the front, due to our prominent roof line at the front of our house. David said that that wouldn't be a problem. He also suggested that we have a timed switch installed so that the fan doesn't get left on accidentally. The replacement of some moldy baseboard would be not problem. David also didn't see a problem with installing new stair treads, etc. David and one of his employees showed up on time on the first scheduled day and got to work. They first installed the exhaust fan in our shower room. When the job was finished, David came and got me to show me their work. The exhaust fan was in the wall but there was a 4" cut right above it. David apologized right away, saying that he accidentally starting cutting the hole too high and had to start lower in order for the fan to fit into the wall without running into the slanted ceiling. He then said that WE could patch that up pretty easily with some Spackle and paint. I had already noticed that the control switch that he put in was not the timed switch that we had agreed upon. When I brought that to his attention, he only stated that if we wanted to get a timed switch, he could change it for us. I showed him where it stated "timed wall switch for control" in the estimate. He then said that he'd get it changed for us. Lastly, he led me out of our front door to see where the vent came out. There it was sticking up right in the middle FRONT of our roof all by itself looking ridiculous. I mentioned the fact that we had previously agreed that it would be vented out to the back of our roof. David said that when he looked at the situation again, it would be difficult to vent out the back and would probably work better coming out the front anyway. I restated that fact that we didn't want a vent sticking out of the middle of our roof in the front of our house. He told me that it didn't look that bad since we had some skylights and another vent coming out of the front (the other vent is at the EDGE of the roof and hardly noticeable). I disagreed. He asked that my husband and I think about it.

Poor. Unless you are retired or work out of the home, good luck getting a quote from this company. Unlike any company I have worked with in this industry, they offer zero flexibility in scheduling estimates. I'll happily work with another contractor who can put the customer's needs first.
Description of Work: I called on a Monday, received a return phone call on Wednesday, and scheduled an estimate for the following Tuesday afternoon. They would only schedule estimates from 9:00am - 3:30 pm. Since I was concerned with my work schedule I called the day prior to the appointment to inquire about any possible evening or weekend appointments, the receptionist informed me that they did not offer this. I told her specifically that I would like to keep my appointment, unless she heard back from me otherwise. I took leave from work to come home to meet their scheduling requirements, only to find that they did not show for their appointment.

WE DID NOT SHOW FOR THE APPOINTMENT BECAUSE HE CALLED AND CANCELED THE APPOINTMENT THE MORNING BEFORE THE MEETING, AFTER I HAD ALREADY TOLD OTHER CUSTOMERS THE TIME WAS TAKEN. HE TOLD ME THAT HE DIDN'T THINK IT WOULD WORK WITH HIS WORK SCHEDULE. HE SAID HE WOULD CALL BACK TO CONFIRM OR RESCHEDULE. I CALLED HIM BACK AT THE END OF THE DAY TO SEE IF HE WAS AVAILABLE OR NOT. HE NEVER RETURNED MY CALL. HIS APPT. WAS SCHEDULED FOR 4 P.M. THE NEXT DAY. HE DIDN'T CALL ME UNTIL 3:45 THE DAY OF THE APPOINTMENT. I ASKED HIM IF HE GOT MY MESSAGE THE DAY BEFORE ASKING HIM TO CONTACT ME AS SOON AS POSSIBLE TO CONFIRM OR RESCHEDULE THE APPOINTMENT AND HE SAID YES. I EXPLAINED THAT BECAUSE HE EXPRESSED HIS DESIRE TO RESCHEDULE AND DID NOT CALL BACK I HAD GIVEN THE APPOINTMENT TO ANOTHER CLIENT. I DO NOT THINK IT IS FAIR FOR HIM TO BASH ME AND MY COMPANY BECAUSE OF HIS FAILURE TO RETURN MY CALL OR CONFIRM HIS DESIRE TO KEEP HIS APPOINTMENT. OUR COMPANY DOES ONLY OPERATE MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY. WE ARE A SMALL FAMILY ORIENTED/OWNED COMPANY. WE VALUE OUR EVENINGS AND WEEKENDS WITH OUR FAMILY MEMBERS. OUR ESTIMATES ARE OFFERED FREE OF CHARGE. NO COST TO THE POTENTIAL CLIENT. THEY DO HAVE A COST TO OUR SMALL BUSINESS. WE HAVE BEEN IN BUSINESS SINCE 2002 AND HAVE A LARGE, LOYAL CUSTOMER BASE. OUR CUSTOMERS CONSIST OF WORKING AND RETIRED HOMEOWNERS. I THINK THIS MEMBER'S RUDE ASSESSMENT OF OUR COMPANY IS UNFOUNDED, ESPECIALLY SINCE HE WAS THE ONE WHO EXPRESSED HIS INTENT TO CANCEL AND THEN DID NOT FOLLOW THROUGH WITH CONFIRMATION OF THE APPOINTMENT.

Company called back two days later to schedule an appointment. The evening before the scheduled time they called saying they would have to cancel because a current client which was a large job wanted them to work later because of proposed changes. They gave me two dates and times to reschedule. I called back and confirmed one of the dates and times. Again they called and canceled for the same reason. I understand the commitment to current clients but they need to take into consideration the needs of potential new clients. I felt the first cancellation was OK, but they should have made their commitment to the second appointment. Although they were polite, professional and explained the situation, I still felt they should have kept their commitment to me by explaining to the current client they had a prior appointment they could not cancel. The situation made me feel like they did not consider my job important enough. I had two other bids from other companies but have decided not to contract with either since they did not present in a professional way that I was confident they could do the work correctly. So now I have to start the process over again. This may be a very good company and an isolated incident but it was not a good experience for me. Since I have to go through the bidding process again, they are welcome to bid the job if they feel they can commit to an estimate appointment and do the work withing two weeks of accepting the estimate. If selected, I will post to this list after the work is complete and let everyone know if the experience is good.

WHILE I UNDERSTAND THE FRUSTRATION THAT OUR CUSTOMERS RECEIVE WHEN THEY DON'T GET A 'LIVE' PERSON IMMEDIATELY, WE ARE CURRENTLY A SMALL COMPANY AND CURRENTLY IN OUR BUSY SEASON. I AM 1 PERSON ANSWERING UP TO 80 CALLS A DAY! WE PREFER TO STAY SMALL AND OFFER GREAT SERVICE. I ALWAYS SUGGEST A CUSTOMER GIVE AN ALTERNATE NUMBER SO THAT WE CAN AVOID THE PHONE TAG. I AGREE THAT IT WASTES BOTH PARTIES TIME. I CERTAINLY HAD NO INTENTION OF WASTING HERS. I DID HAVE THE CORRECT DAY DOWN AS I WROTE IT ON MY CALENDAR THE MOMENT SHE GAVE IT TO ME. I OFFER A COURTESY CALL THE DAY BEFORE SERVICE, SHE CLAIMED IT WAS INCORRECT AND I APOLOGIZED, ACCEPTING BLAME FOR SOMETHING I KNOW I DIDN'T DO WRONG AND ACCOMMODATED HER REQUEST FOR THE TIME SHE BELIEVED THE APPOINTMENT TO BE. I FEEL OUR COMPANY DEFINITELY WENT ABOVE AND BEYOND TO SATISFY HER. BECAUSE OF THIS, THIS REPORT IS VERY UPSETTING TO ME AS AN OWNER.
