I'm not trying to be dramatic- DO NOT CALL USE THESE PEOPLE. OH that I could have a redo. For starters, Eric (the salesman) is very nice. He seemed to know what he was talking about and listened well. Here is what I wanted done: My kitchen floor, entry way, and matching hardwood window seat refinished, multiple destroyed boards replaced, a new threshold built between kitchen and living room, and everything stained a nice dark brown and quot;Espressoand quot;-type finish. He assured me that this would not be a problem. I told him we would be removing the baseboards and replacing them after the job was completed (baseboards were nasty and beat-up). I called Eric and Bob three days before work was to begin to ask if they could do anything about the squeakiness of the floors, just add that to my quote or something. I never heard back. I have 6 people in my family. We booked a hotel (very expensive for 6 people, since it was the largest room they had and only rarely unreserved). We moved everything out of the kitchen and just ate out the night before. Work was to begin at 9am. Bob (the OWNER OF THE COMPANY), called at 8 am and asked if he could begin work the next day, or maybe the next week because he had someone call out sick. I said that I was sorry but no- we had the kitchen torn apart, hotels booked, etc. He was very rude about it but agreed that he would start at noon. He didn't show up until almost two with no phone call and no apology. He came into my house in a rush, very rude, just running about shoving stuff here and there, almost running me over in his hurry. He asked me what color I wanted- I reminded him that I had asked for espresso. He said they didn't have a color like that. I hated all four colors he showed me, but didn't know what to do. He finally decided that he could mix one color with some black and that would do it. I reluctantly agreed (I'm not very good at standing up to bullies, and he is definitely a bully). When my husband and I came home the next day we were appalled at the horrible workmanship. Here's the list:- NONE of the boards had been replaced in any of the three areas we had work performed. - Stain all over my walls, laminate flooring, BRAND NEW KITCHEN CABINETS (note: we were planning on removing the laminate for carpet, but giving it away as it was still good)- Sealant running down my walls under the window seat- the new threshold boards were not cut to the same size as the other boards, preventing baseboard from fitting back into the space (most of the time, baseboard sits on top of the hardwood, but in our house it did not.)- multiple places on the landing and the window seat that were not sanded or stained.- the window seat was rough, like it hadn't been given a finish sanding. - several spots in the kitchen where the original clear-coat had not been removed, so the old floor color was still visible as the new stain wouldn't stick to clear-coat. My husband called Bob and he was EXTREMELY rude and kept making excuses for everything. Elliot asked him to just come to the house and discuss what would be done there. When he got to our house he was super angry, defensive, and RUDE. -He didn't fix ANYTHING. - He said it was my fault that they hadn't replaced the boards in any of the areas because I didn't tell him they were supposed to. (That's what a work order is for!?) - He said it was Eric's fault that the window seat wasn't finished properly because they don't have the right tools to do the window seat so Eric shouldn't have sold it in the first place. - He said that Elliot obviously didn't know anything about home building because baseboards go on top of hardwood floors. Elliot said yeah, maybe in most houses but not ours! - He said it wasn't their fault that stain had gotten on our cabinets because they taped them off. - When Elliot brought up the missing stain in all three areas and the stain coating our walls and laminate flooring, Bob had the audacity to tell Elliot that and quot;I just don't feel like you appreciate the hard work I did for you! This floor looks a lot better now than it did!and quot;. He said he would take off the cost of the entire window seat and all of the not-replaced boards. When I got my final bill, he had taken off $65... off of a total price of over $1000. YES, it looks better, however that doesn't mean we need to and quot;appreciate the job he didand quot;. Magnus Anderson/ Bob did a crappy, rushed, half-butted job and didn't care enough to fix it, or even apologize. Great company. *sarcasm*

We had been thinking of having this work done for about seven years, but every time we started to get bids, the choices and overall presentation seemed too overwhelming. This year we had more time to move slower, and so glad we found Magnus Anderson. The presentation was clear and professional, so we knew from the first meeting what part of the project would take about how much time, approximate cost, and where we would have decisions to make. The official bid came in a couple of days breaking down all the parts of the project, enabling us to add or subtract as fit our taste and budget. The project overall was as painless as can be including the move out of the entire first floor and half the second floor. We were afraid we'd have to move into a friend's or hotel for the week, but thanks to Erics knowledge about his product, decided just to stay in the basement. This saved us hundreds, and we had no problems with dust or fumes other than one night with an odor in the basement family room, but nothing in the closed off bedroom down there. We were hoping for a certain look for the new floors, but had no idea where to start, what woods may or may not work, what stains were available or what went into the installation process with what finishes. We are also very, very slow and picky with house decisions. Eric cheerfully worked throughout with us, offering suggestions but never pushing any product or service. We had many custom samples brought over to the house to see how it would look next to the original flooring. It took a long three weeks (maybe longer) for us to make a final decision, with Eric patiently advising and supporting our process throughout! Our final decision was to again use oak after the hickory and birch didn't look as we expected. Both were beautiful, but just not right for us. We put 4" planks down on a diagonal line to offset the original horizontal 2.5". The result is beautiful, not too different but setting off the living area from the entryway. The stairs are stunning, in our humble opinion. The staircase is in view right as you walk in the door, so it was important that we didn't mess up that one. Thanks to Magnus Anderson, we achieved the simple yet eye-catching look we wanted. One word suffices for the old floors. NEW! Yes, they look new. Friends and family cannot believe they are the same old scratchy, bent in places, yellow floors we had. Now the original wood tones are well defined, with no marks! l We had a couple of deep marks ( from a young overenthusiastic rollerblader years ago) that we thought would always be there, just a badge of a busy household. When we had the floors redone several years ago, those marks remained. They are now gone! We had one problem that was our fault...the cat got out of the basement after the final coat was finished! Ugh! We came home that night to little paw prints on the finish on stairs, entryway and hall. In a dismal mood we called ( after checking out kitty!) Eric... and no problem!!... he offered to come over ASAP to re-do. In 2 working days we had our gorgeous floors! So, overall our experience, especially with all the challenges our home presented, was wonderful. Bob, Eric and the crew are professional, polite, friendly, and very easy to work with; Eric tracking exactly what's going on and what needs to happen next at all times. Once started, everything went like clockwork, with the crew cleaning up well after each day. Oh, and the bid was right on target! No surprises! The final product is amazing and will last a lifetime! We now will have these gorgeous floors for as long as we're here. And I'm sure they will be here long after someone else remodels ...whatever...after we leave.
Description of Work: Magnus Anderson refinished our wood in the entryway, hall, family room and kitchen floors, which had not been done for 14 years in our 22 year old home. Then we worked with Eric to choose and install a complimentary wood to replace our carpet in the living room, dining room, up the stairs into the hallway and master bedroom.

I am a very picky person... VERY! I am a graphic designer by trade, and am meticulous with detail! That said, I am thrilled with Magnus Anderson, with the work they performed, and with the pride they took in each task. You are about to read a very favorable review from an annoyingly picky man and I need to state this disclaimer... I am in NO WAY related or associated with Magnus Anderson! By the time you've read this raving review you'll know what I felt the need to make this disclaimer. Magnus Anderson won the bid for the refinnishing of my hard wood floors for several reasons, the top two being responsiveness and thoroughness. From the time I inquired on Angie's List, Magnus made it very clear that they wanted my business by replying to every call and email with answers to my questions. Even before providing an estimate, they walked me through their processes and explained why they believed that their processes and experience would yield the best results (which proved to later be correct). They asked me good questions ("How much traffic would be on the floors?") in order to know which type of polyurethane varnish would be best to use. When I provided Eric (Sales Person) with an aggressive start date, he was honest about the length of their process (3 or 4 days) and said that if they would do their best to grant my request and get back to me. When he called back, he informed me that they could move another project forward, and that they could actually come in a day earlier than my proposed start date (which thrilled me beyond belief). My hard wood floors were in good shape (8 years old) and here the light, "natural" color, but I wanted them stained a dark, DARK brown. They explained how they would "water pop" the wood in order to get a deeper, more consistantly stained color. The owner, Bob, met me at the house with another worker, where they sanded six squares on the floor and had applied six different stain colors as options to choose from... None of them were what I was looking for! :( When I expressed this to Bob, he said that he would come back later that evening with some options that might be what I was wanting. He returned at 6:00PM, sanded more space, and laid down several more colors, one of which was PERFECT! This was a wonderful example of problem solving, and the desire to please the customer and impressed me from the start! Once the floors had been sanded and part of the room stained, they asked if I wanted to swing by to see the color before all of the floors were stained. I appreciated this gesture, swung by, saw the beauty and approved. Over the next three days, they applied the stain, the varnish coats and moved the appliances back into place. At the end of each day, when I would peek in to take a look, I always noticed how clean my house was. And at the end of the project, I was thrilled with how clean and "dust-free" my house was. This was a huge indicator of the care that this company operates in. When the project was complete, they told me to be on the lookout over the next couple of weeks for any flaws or inconsistancies as they wanted to be able to correct any mistakes. I indeed found a couple of small imperfections and told them about them, to which they popped over (within two days) and took care of to my satisfaction. I paid the remainder of my balance and figured we were done... Later that week, I received an email with instructions on how to best care for my new, beautiful floors (what cleaner to use, how often to sweep and clean...) followed by a phone call to see if I had any questions. That was very nice customer service! But check this out... A few weeks later, I was having my fireplace mantle refinished by a friend (NOT Magnus Anderson) and called Magnus to ask if they could tell me the name of the stain that they used. They told me that the stain which they used could not be found at a Home Depot or Lowe's. But that if I wanted to match the stain exactly, they they would pour me a pint for me, free of charge! UNBELIEVABLE! My tab was paid in full, but they were so set on pleasing their me, their customer, that they GAVE ME STAIN, so that it would be a perfect match for my mantle! That, my friends, is rare and wonderful! All that said... I have already recommended Magnus Anderson to many of my friends and will continue to do so. Starting now... Stop reading reviews and hire Magnus Anderson for your hard wood floor finishing project!
Description of Work: Magnus Anderson helped me choose a stain color, sanded my hard wood floors, color-popped the wood, stained the floors, applied three coats of polyurinthane (to accommodate very high traffic on the floors), including one commercial grade polyurethane. They cleaned up any dust, moved the fridge and stove back into place, and were done.

They are extremely knowledgeable. I did have a problem when they installed the floors, but they were really prompt to address the problem and they came back to fix it. I was really happy with the fix that they did. I would use them again in the future if need be.
