We made it very clear to Jim when he provided the budget that we needed someone to complete framing, drywall, paint and finish carpentry. The remainder we had already contracted out (thank goodness we did!). We hired Jim to complete this work. We did not hire Jim to be a general contractor and bring in subcontractors, which is what he did. Luckily the framer he brought in knew more than Jim did about framing and did a fantastic job. Because the framer was so good we kept moving forward with Jim.
The drywall could not have gone worse! The framer told us that Jim did not intend on completing our drywall himself because he had taken another job and that he was looking for a drywall crew to bring in. The framer told us this. Jim never communicated this. One Friday evening at about 6 pm a drywall crew showed up at our home. They told us they were there to meet Jim and provide him with a cost to complete the drywall in our basement. Again, Jim had said nothing to us about the drywall and we already had a budget from Jim for materials and labor for drywall. Jim never showed and we ended up taking the crew through our basement. In hindsight, we should have fired Jim then and there and hired this crew. They were actual drywallers. Jim did not end up hiring them because apparently they were too expensive. Again, this information did not come from Jim but from the new drywall crew that ended up showing up unexpectedly one evening. During all of this Jim had the drywall delivered. He called one evening and told us the materials would be showing up in about a half hour and could be let the crew in? We were not even home and of course Jim had no plans of being there himself. We rushed home and let them in. This crew ended up destroying a window through which they brought the drywall in and we eventually had to completely replace the window. Not cheap!
Back to the crew (a husband and wife) that Jim did hire to complete our drywall. Turns out he had never even met this couple in person before. Apparently he had somehow found their number and hired them over the phone. He had apparently told them we had 8 foot ceilings because I got an earful when they saw that the ceilings were 9 ft. I told them to call Jim to work it out and apparently they did and agreed to get started. Jim professed that these two had been drywalling for 35 years (um, not even close). They hung the drywall the wrong direction causing need for additional sheets of drywall. They would begin in a room and then randomly move to another room and hang a piece of drywall. They even started taping and mudding in random places for some reason. Their work was not the worst problem. We had given Jim access to our garage code to come in and work while we were at work. He went ahead and passed this on to this drywall crew. We found a ton of evidence each time they were in our home and we were gone that they had wandered through our house, into bedrooms, opening drawers, utilizing our kitchen and refrigerator, but the worst was the bathroom. Without getting too gross, let's just say they went number 2 in 2 different bathrooms and proceeded to wipe their feces all over the toilet and walls. We continuously were calling and emailing Jim to tell him of the issues and he kept informing us that he had spoken with him and it would not happen again. The 2nd time they did what they did in the bathroom we told Jim they could not come back to our home, the garage code had been changed and the alarm system was on. We had a long talk with Jim and he was told that he was to complete the work he was hired to do or we would find someone else. Jim showed up for a total of 2 days with a new drywall crew and that was all the work he did.
The new crew was normal but also not experienced and incredibly slow. It took 6 weeks to complete drywall, which we later found out from several contractors should have taken no more than a week. We ended up spending a ton of money to fix the drywall problems after we finally fired Jim and told him we no longer needed his services. They had covered 6 electrical outlets and 3 plumbing cleanouts with drywall that we had to find. The outlets that were cut out were done so poorly that they had to have huge chunks cut out and new pieces put in.
You would be better off to utube the work you need done and do it yourself. Jim will end up costing you time and money and screw up your house!
"this member for starters is being unfair in her review she told me she needed to get started as soon as possible and she did not find anyone else so i tried to get her scheduled anyway by finding a sub to take care of some of her work i was on another contract she acted like she was in a hurry and i told her i was on another contract and that i would look for a drywall person we had a bad experience with the first drywaller and i resolved that but she was not happy at that point even though we finished the drywall stage she was very difficult to get along with it just goes to show that you cant try to do to much at a time when i am involved with the jobsite things always go well because i pay attention to detail and get the job done in the right way i will not be subbing any work out in the future. due to time restraints this one did not work out due to the fact that i was not involved in the process enough.however she did get the work finished as far as budget? basement finishing is based on sq footage my price was below the average price most basement finish companies would charge the work came out nice however and there is no justification for this review."
