I'm new to Colorado and spent a lot of time researching Angie's List providers. I decided to try Grandma's Handyman service. I called and made an appt. Handyman was punctual and professional. Will definitely use them again. I received a discount as an Angie's List member.
Description of Work: He hung a very large antique mirror and did an excellent job making sure the correct hardware was used and his measurements were precise.

Thank you for your report. Years ago, when I searched in the yellow pages of the phone book for a service provider, I would make a call to see if they could do the work I needed as their ad seemed to fit what I needed to have done. Oftentimes, after I stated my request, the company representative would say, "I'm sorry, we don't do that." When I asked if they knew who could, they would just say "No!....Goodbye." This left me feeling cold! So, when I started Grandma's Handyman Service, I remembered this and promised myself that we would never do that. As a result, we have established a list of service providers who we trust and can at least give a customer a referral for work that is out of our focus. We also remind members to take advantage of Angie's List. We do our best to help every person who calls Grandma's. Grandma

Grandma was wonderful to work with , and her handyman was very profesional. He arrived on time, hung the wall mirror, perfectly and cleaned up afterwards. I am just so pleased with the results and would recommend Grandma and Michael to friends and family. We are planning future projects and will call Grandma!!!

This is my second experience with Grandma's Handyman. I had the same technician, Mike. He was scheduled to arrive at 9:00 a.m. to begin the work. At 8:55 he pulled up with a hearty smile and handshake. He went over in detail exactly what I wanted him to do. We looked at the sinks I had purchased and the time. I explained that I'd lost a part to the latch for the sliding glass door and had been unable to locate a replacement. As the house is currently vacant and up for sale, I left Mike to finish his work. On my return (he called about half an hour prior to finishing), he went over in detail all the work he had completed and identified a small concern regarding the sink and how it was resolved. He showed me that he had found an old screen in the garage with a latch. He had removed the latch and put it on the sliding glass door that needed one. I also noted that rather than taking time to go to the hardware store, he had improvised a less expensive and very workable solution. I found Mike to be a competent and capable professional handyman. I certainly would use Grandma's agin when I need help in my new home. I am very pleased with this service.
Description of Work: I needed to have a pair of sinks installed in an upstairs bathroom, a broken tile repaired and a lock on a sliding glass door fixed.

Called to see if we could get an estimate on have a ceiling repaired in our laundry room. Fiberboard tongue and groove tiles had come loose. Had to leave a message. My call was promptly returned. "Grandma" was very friendly & professional, but didn't think it was the kind of work they could do. Offered to send someone out to see if they could even quote it (at no charge if they couldn't - if they could any charge would be applied when I had the work done.) I opted not to possibly waste their time & mine since it wasn't a job they thought they could do. I would definitely call for other types of handy work though. I felt I was treated honestly & respectfully - like a customer!

From first contact to someone actually doing work took about a month. One person showed up but didn't return so they sent another person out. This person noticed our electrical plugs were dangerous and told us it was more important we fix the electrical than the other stuff on our 'handyman list.' He came in the following week and did the work. Then he left the power off and said he wouldn't turn it back on until we replaced a certain cord on this filter we have. Even though all of us were aware we were not to plug in or use the filter until it was fixed. I appreciate his concern but we are adults and his choice to keep the power off interfered with the services we perform at our business. I had to call his boss to get him to turn on the power. He returned and turned on the power for no charge. I could only trust that they were telling me the truth about the electrical being dangerous, I believe it was true. But the whole process of getting a person there to actually work took way too many phone calls and way too long. And what struck me as strange was when I asked if I should report this to the fire inspector the owner of this company said it would only cause me more trouble than it's worth. That may be true but I don't know it just left me uncomfortable. Because every year a fire inspector comes in and in 5 years has never mentioned the electrical plugs as dangerous. But better safe than sorry, so I put out the money to get them fixed. But we still haven't fixed the items on our original 'handyman list.' I won't use them again mostly because of how long it took to get the work started and the cost, at $120.00 an hour I believe I can find another handyman that would do a great job and be willing to do the work for 1/2 of that price.
Description of Work: The service performed was suppose to be putting up some fiberglass but ended up being for electrical.

The member is correct when she states that it took about a month to get started on the work. The first technician went out to do an estimate and then quit. As many members know, this happens in their own experience. The difference is that we sent out a second technician. The location of the job was at a local dog daycare center in Denver, Colorado. The member is located out of state in Tacoma, Washington. Since the member is an absentee owner, we believe she really didn’t understand the condition of the facility. This made scheduling the job extremely difficult. The second technician was the best man for the job. The member agreed to have us do the repairs one at a time over a period of time in order to spread out the cost of the job. There were certain aspects of the job that the member wanted to address, however, when the technician went out, he did see an extremely dangerous condition. The pool for the dogs is located next to a wall. On that wall were electrical outlets that were exposed to water splashing on them from the pool. I have 2 of the outlets in question. The GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet was not properly installed but hung loose from the wall by a wire held in place by tape. Another wire was just stuck into the outlet and was hanging out and there are burn marks on the plug receptacle. The tech saw that this wire was melted into the outlet. The second regular duplex wire was in the wall but there was no outlet plate cover. The screws that hold the wires to the outlet are rusted. Employees at the dog daycare center received shocks from time to time. The member is sorely mistaken if she really believes that posting signs for people not to touch this wiring is sufficient to protect employees and dogs. This was a disaster waiting to happen….someone could have been killed or a fire could have started. Upon assessing the situation, the tech secured 7 electrical boxes (outlets) around the pool area. Needing more time to do a proper fix, he was scheduled to go back for additional work. At the second service, he replaced 8 electrical boxes and installed 3 waterproof GFCI outlets. He turned off the power to the pump at that time because more wiring was needed to make the electrical safe. When he returned to the dog daycare center to turn on the power at the insistence of the member, he discovered that a friend of the manager was trying to replace the electrical cord on the pump. Seeing that he was having difficulty, our technician did this work at no charge. I don’t know why the fire department didn’t see this electrical mess when they did their inspections. Perhaps they just didn’t examine the outlets. I suppose that the right thing to do would have been to call them. I believe that the dog daycare center would have been immediately shut down when we could correct the situation quickly. The original work requests were never done because the above work had to be completed before any cosmetic work was scheduled. Also, the member is mistaken when she states that we charge $120 an hour. We charge $75 for the first hour only and $60 for each additional hour, $5 fuel charge per day, plus materials. Grandma’s Handyman Service always considers safety first, whether our own or our customer’s. When we encounter a hazardous situation, we will correct that first or we will not do any work on the property at all. We believe that is the best policy. Grandma

Grandma's Handyman Service's technician, Michael Pitts, made the intitial inspection and I had the proposal via email a few days later. We selected Grandma's for the job because not only did they propose the best price, but the people I dealt with were all knowedgeable and very friendly, and no one tried to "B.S." us the way many contractors do. We scheduled the job for the following week. Michael did an outstaning job, getting the 2 doors installed in one day, and consulted with us first when any unforeseen developments occurred (which almost always happens when home improvements are being done). In summary, we are extremely pleased with Grandma's Handyman Service & will not hesitate to call them again.

Dear Member, I am so sorry, but we show no record of ever having provided you with a written estimate for any work. Perhaps you called and got our hourly rates, which have been published in responses to other members and on our web site, and may have misunderstood. Our rates for the services of one technician are as follows: $75 for the first hour only, $60 for each additional hour, $5 fuel charge per day plus any materials that we purchase for your job. We are fully insured and bonded; all of our technicians have passed a national background check; we do not use sub-contractors; and they all carry two company credit cards. We do charge a $35 trip charge for estimates because we pay our technicians to do estimates and that covers part of our cost. However, it is not a loss to the customer because it is applied toward the job when we do the work. I hope this clears up any misunderstanding. Grandma

The people that answer the phone were very nice set up a time for an estimate. They had asked if I wanted their handy man to come ready to work and I said yes but I wanted an estimate first (thank goodness I got an estimate before he did any work). He arrived 30 minutes late after he went to my home address first (which is the billing address) and I was waiting for him at our rental property (which is the address I told them I would be at). He arrived and looked at the work to be done. I had 3 holes in the drywall (one was 13"x16" from a plumber repair, the other two were the size of a door knob and then a small crack in the ceiling) that needed repair and some other misc. items such as a door jam that needed work because it was not level. I had him give me 2 separate bids 1 for drywall and another for the misc. stuff. My first concern was that his idea to fix the door was to just drop the catch for the handle and deadbolt instead of squaring the door up like it should be. I told him I could have just done that and to forget about that then. He made a list of what I had asked him to do including the drywall and said he would have to go home and figure it out. I was a lilttle surprised because I assumed that he would perform the work that day. I said that was fine and then he called me later with the estimate. I had told him that my time was limited and that is why I called him to help out. I was told that their price was $70 an hour plus $5 fuel charge. I had not quams about that and I had expected to pay less than $500 for the drywall and the other small stuff. So when he called back he gave me an estimate of $840 for the drywall and $300 for the other small stuff. Ok I get the $300 for the small stuff that is fine but $840 for the drywall repair!!! he must have thought I specified gold plated!! I told him on the phone that I was surprised with his price for the drywall, and clarified it will take you over 10 hours to do this? and he replied yes. So I passed on using his service and called other handyman services who quoted me $200-$400 for the same job. I thought ok this drywall stuff must be pretty tough, got on the computer looked at some video, went to Lowes and spent $40 on ALL the supplied I needed including drywall, 8"knife, putty knife, 12"knife, tub, texture spray, drywall joint compound, etc and tried my luck. It took me 2.5 hours and it actually looks really good. The biggest patch actually came out the best. So my advice is stay away from this company for drywall they use the gold plated stuff!!

Yes, Ed was late to the job because he did not have the address where the work was to be performed. This was an office misstep and we apologize. However, Ed did call and got the correct address. In addition, it appears that the member misunderstood the proposed repair to fix the door. Ed was not going to “drop the catch for the handle and deadbolt”. Ed proposed to fix the hinge at the top of the door in order to square the door. We also had no indication that the member would want the work done the same day. We usually cannot schedule in that manner because the technician is scheduled for another customer after the estimate. Ed has been with Grandma’s Handyman Service for 5 years. We have hundreds of positive customer comments concerning his work. When a customer requests an estimate, this estimate is based on the time the technician believes the job would take him to accomplish. The cost is fixed to the customer based on the estimate. Oftentimes, the technician overstates what the cost might be because he cannot determine what he will find until he actually starts the work. In reviewing the member’s estimate, I found that the cost of two of the tasks was overstated by a wide margin. The other five tasks were reasonably estimated. If the member would have called the office, we could have discussed the estimate at that time and I would have reviewed it and made adjustments. Grandma’s Handyman Service, Inc. is a time plus material company. All of our estimates are calculated accordingly. In cases where there is a “honey-do” list, it is usually in the customer’s best interest to forego the estimate and allow us to work based on time plus material. We know we cannot beat the price of the individual handyman, but Grandma’s Handyman Service, Inc. carries $2 Million general liability insurance, $500,000 worker’s comp insurance, a $25,000 bond, and we extend a one-year warranty on most service. All of our technicians have passed a national background check and are regular employees of the company. Our company strives hard to meet every customer’s expectations. Sometimes we come up short and when that happens, we work diligently to rectify any shortfall. Grandma

They also did the switches and hung a chandelier after installing the new electrical requirements. They did the shelving and framed a custom window opening and did all the wood work in the nursery.

Ed arrived on time, assessed the work, began to install the door, worked the door to fit into the jam, installed the door, installed the hardware, finished the door. Began on the windows, installed the curtain rods, hung the sheers, was concerned and detail oriented, asked me where I wanted the rods to hang and was knowledgeable about the job and personal particulars, put only the holes necessary in the 100 year old hardwood window work and didn't unnecessarily damage any of the wood surrounding the windows. He installed three window treatments in very quick time. He's a champ. Very courteous, non-intrusive and seemingly sensitive to the fact that time is money, working expeditiously and professionally. He had the necessary tools and go to work quickly. The only bad thing that happened that I hope he didn't have a problem with was that he got a ticket for parking on the side of the street that the street cleaners came on that day and since I am new to the area, new to Denver, new to living back in the States, I wasn't able to warn him for it and he got a ticket. The sign is a little hidden as well, up past the neighbor's house.
Description of Work: The handyman arrived to install a screen door and hang window treatment curtain rods and sheers in three windows. The standard wood screen door that I bought didn't fit the non-standard 100 year old Victorian door jam, so Ed, that's the guy, had to shave off 1/2" off the top side of the door with his electric saw. I'm glad he had it with him. He installed all of the curtain rods without a problem. The whole job took about 2 1/2 hours, which was a little lengthy, but the door had to be sized, installed, and hardware also installed with a door handle and hardware to prevent the door from slamming. He did a good job and I was very happy to have the work done and done well.

The company seemed okay. The person that did the work was an older man and I think it was a lot of work to do for one guy. The work was okay but not great, so I probably won?t use them again. This guy was trying hard and everything but the drywall looks like someone repaired it and he was unable to solve my problems.
Description of Work: Grandma’s Handyman Service sealed the cement floor in my basement. They also did a little bit of drywall on the wall and ceiling.

When our company read this report, we immediately contacted the member by telephone. After speaking with the member and gathering more information, a different technician was sent to her home last week to address her concerns. This second technician, who is skilled in both concrete and drywall, spent time assessing the concrete and drywall repair. When a small area of concrete is repaired there will always be evidence of that repair unless the entire floor area is redone. With the drywall repair, the paint that was customer provided did not exactly match the wall due to aging on the wall, so again the repair would be evident until the entire wall was repainted. Often times a customer's expectations of the final repair "looking like new and nothing was ever repaired" cannot be achieved. Painting the entire wall would make the wall look like new, but the concrete floor would need to be totally resurfaced or covered with a floating floor. Our technicians all strive to do the best humanly possible job, but sometimes making it look like new just isn't possible. Mike Q., the original tech sent to this member's home, is a very skilled concrete/drywall technician and has received many glowing reports from other Angie's List members. On another note, following the second technician's visit, we expect to be scheduling additional work for the member as she was pleased that the company responded to her concerns.

Michael bought the lumber and hardware and immediately got to works. By the afternoon he had completed both fences and they were perfect! They are tall enough to keep the dogs from jumping over them, they matched the side fence perfectly, and they were cut on the bottom to match the grading of the ground so that the dogs couldn't fit under the gates. I am thrilled with the gates and feel that the cost was very fair. I have had Michael work for me before and his work is always outstanding. He really pays attention to the needs of the client.
Description of Work: I needed to have two gates to keep my dogs from going into the areas on the sides of my house.

The handyman that came to my daughter's condo, while I was in town helping her, came without the tools to do the jobs that I had requested. He had no masking tape to tape off where he was painting. I had to go to the store and buy it. I also had to go and buy the stuff to hang the mirrors. I had purchased the paint and stain for the door and door frame, but he was not sure how to apply it. He did not sand the door (had no sand paper), thus my door is not smooth. He was not able to install the ceiling fan. After opening the box he said he did not feel comfortable installing it. This service states that they send handymen out that can do the job. This was on my list and the person they sent me seemed very nervous about everything he did do. In fact he acted so nervous that I called Grandma's before he even got started on the first job. There response was that they would not send out anyone who could not do all the jobs. I called Grandma's after he left and tried to discuss my experience with their service. She gave me excuses for what he did and said she wanted to talk to the handyman. She told me she would call me back, I never heard back from her. I never got a chance to tell her that the fan had not even been installed.
Description of Work: Replace smoke alarm batteries, change out shower head, replaced microwave, paint and stain door and door frame, hang mirrors and install ceiling fan (fan was not done)

It is true that I failed to call the member back in a timely manner. I did try to reach her daughter who has been our customer since 2008. I wanted to make an appointment to go and see the job for myself. After discussion with our technician, Rex, who is an extremely honest and trustworthy individual of high integrity, the following is an account of what transpired during the job. This is the best interpretation of events as we see it. First of the member's daughter contacted our company to schedule the work. The following is the exact request for service copied and pasted from our work order: 1. Hang 2 large mirrors, 2. swap out existing fan light with new fan/light and mount remote control to wall, 3. Stain bare wood pantry door (she will have stain but you need to take necessary supplies for the staining). 4. Change batteries in smoke detectors (she has batteries) located at 9' ceiling Because we are a handyman company, we cannot carry supplies for every type of job or each technician would be driving an 18-wheeler. Our technician arrives at a job, assesses the work to be done and then goes for the material needed for the job. Our techs try to have material for the jobs listed but that is not always possible. Painting was not on the job order. In addition, there were other tasks done that were not on the job order. While Rex had some blue tape in his vehicle, he really did not have enough for the job because of the additional painting. Rex was prepared to go and purchase what he needed, but the member said she was going out anyway and would pick up what was needed. She seemed very agreeable at the time. Rex knew exactly what to do regarding the pantry door and trim hilt he bad no choice but to do the staining and sealing on the deck which is not a great idea as the wind will blow dust. As far as Rex could see, the door was smooth and ready to stain and he wiped it down before staining. The daughter stepped out onto the deck and examined each step of the work as it was being completed. Rex also consulted with her to be sure she approved the color of the stain. The member was not at the residence when Rex left, but the daughter approved all of the work that Rex did and was happy with all the results. As far as the pantry door is concerned, I really need to examine it myself as I have experience in this kind of work. It is possible that everything was done correctly but the wind blew dust onto the door as the sealer was drying. There is no way we can produce a furniture finish and we seldom do any staining for that reason. Also, the major part of the door is glass. At Grandma's Handyman Service, we work as a team. If a technician encounters a problem and cannot complete a part of the job, we send out another technician who can complete the work. This does not increase the cost to our customer. If Rex could not install the fan, we would have sent another technician to do so. However, he is experienced in this task and there was no reason he could not install the fan. The member told Rex that she would have an electrician friend of her husband install the fan. We believed that this was not an issue. When Rex was done, the daughter examined the work and spoke highly of the quality of the work done. She also signed the invoice acknowledging the satisfactory completion of the above described work. On another note, while Rex was there, the mother and daughter were having a very loud, verbally nasty argument and the mother picked up her belongings and stormed out of the residence. Although I believe that the family received full value for their money, I can offer the following: 1. We would be happy to install the new ceiling fan at our continuation rate. 2. I wish to examine the cabinet door and, if necessary, bring it into my workshop to work on it to see if we can get a better finish on it at no charge. However, the customer must understand that we are not furniture finishers and this work would not be warranted. 3. We can take a look at the dripping shower head. Since we only replaced the shower head, we are not responsible for a leak that occurs elsewhere in the system caused by a plumbing issue. Of course, the daughter must contact us so that we can set up an appointment. If she does not, there is nothing more we can do.

Its one of those where I had to get up on the roof and at my age and nobody around; so I didn?t want to take the chance. It was well worth the price. Actually they had to postpone an extra day but that was fine. They arranged everything beautifully and the guy was out on time. Everything happened quickly and effectively.
Description of Work: I used Grandma's Handyman Service a week ago which was last Thursday. We had a support bracket that had fallen off of the air conditioner cage which sits outside of an exterior wall and the guy reinstalled it for me.

We admire Grandma's for not charging us since they handyman could not do what we requested. For this reason we may call them again for handyman services. Our only concern is how they match their workers up with the request. When we originally called Grandmas's we were VERY specific about what needed to be done and that we had the parts that needed to be installed. The handyman they sent was new to Grnadmas's. I wonder if Grandmas's knew if he could do what we so clearly told them needed to be done.
Description of Work: The handyman that Grandma's sent to us was not able to perform the required task. He called Grandma's and Grandma's gave him a name of a plumber who they felt would be able to perform the task. There was no charge for Grandma's handyman since he was unable to perform the task. We called the plumber that they suggested. We felt that his price was very high so we called two other plumbers on Angie's List. The one we chose did exactly what we needed to have done at a very reasonable price.

This customer was, indeed, very specific about his job needs and Grandma’s Handyman does try to match a Technician’s skills with the requested job. Each technician completes a comprehensive skill set list in order to assist the office with assigning techs. Sometimes, however, a more precise tool is needed than a handyman would have. This was the case for this customer. The Tech did know the specifics of the job (adding extensions to bathroom faucets due to new, thicker countertops) and when consulted about the job felt this was doable with his tools. Once on site, however, the counter thickness prevented his tool from reaching the needed nuts. In the rare instances that this situation arises, there is never a charge from Grandma’s and we always provide a referral to a service provider whom we trust to do quality work. It is always the customer’s option to use our referral or find someone else. Rather than attempting a fix and “making it worse”, clearly stating we can’t complete the job, not charging, and referring is in the customer’s best interests. There are very few situations where our techs can’t complete the job and we are sorry this was one of them. At Grandma’s Handyman Service, our first concern is with our customers and providing a quality job at a reasonable price. Grandma
