I took three bids from three different contractors. Our roof was in horrible condition and was an old roof that needed plywood decking to bring it up to code. We were concerned about the high cost of this work. Andrew Masters of RJI offered to work with our insurance company to get the roof covered, and was THE ONLY ONE who told us about a clause in most insurance policies that states that if you have to bring the roof up to code in order to re-roof, that the extra work was covered as well. I told him that if he could get our insurance to cover the roof, he had the job. He stood by his word. He worked closely with our insurance company as to the amount of damage and HE REALLY KNEW HIS STUFF and how to deal with the bureaucracy of insurance adjusters . The cost of the roof was almost $16,000 with the added expense of the complete decking, but we paid only our deductible. (and for the gutters, which we were going to do anyway). As for their work. The materials were delivered on time, crews showed up on time and did a fabulous job. They were respectful of our property and cleaned up after themselves. They took care of everything from permit fees to city inspectors...and the wasps that had built a small nest under some of the old shingles! I am thrilled with the results and with the company. It's been about a year and a half and I love my new roof. There was not one problem with this job that Andrew didn't take care of. Thank you Andrew Master and RJI!!
Description of Work: Complete roofing our home and installing all new gutters. Removing old roof, installing complete new plywood decking and then re-roofing.

A representative from RJI knocked on our door and offered to help us file a claim with our home owner's insurance to get our roof replaced because of a storm in the area the previous summer. We had little faith that our insurance would approve the claim but we decided trying wouldn't hurt. To our surprise, our insurance approved our claim to pay for a new roof. The RJI representative negotiated with our insurance and was able to get more money to install a higher quality roofing material. The RJI representative pitched a material called Decra. We had never heard of Decra before but found it was a metal roof designed to look like a normal asphalt roof. The two main advantages of this material for us were it's 50-year warrantee and it's wind resistance rating. We live in a high wind area and if the insurance was going to buy us a new roof we wanted to make sure we would never have to deal with the process again. We signed the contract to have RJI install a new Decra roof on our home and thus embarked on the worst home repair experience of our lives. For the first part of the installation we were in the hospital after the birth of our son. When we returned home we heard the workers hammering on the roof. The installation instructions had said to use a specific screw for installing the roof for the wind resistance specs. We contacted RJI and after arguing with us they contacted Decra and found that the warrantee would be nullified if the roof was not installed with the proper screws. RJI's solution to this problem was to re-do the roof with the screws using the same Decra panels. Phase two of installation began and this time we did hear screws being put into the panels. But, as one with any common sense would expect, ripping up the metal panels and putting them right back down severely damaged the shape of the panels. One of our neighbors described it best when she said that the roof looked as if the shingles were peeling up. We sent written notification to RJI stating we were unsatisfied with the condition of our new roof. The owner of the company, Rob, came out to our house to inspect and discuss his company's work. He agreed that the roof looked terrible and told us he would not put this product on his own house. He expressed to us that he "couldn't afford for us to be unhappy" and that he planned on making it right. He left that night telling us he would look into pricing a new roofing material and vowed to never install a Decra roof again. The next thing we heard, Rob had contacted a Decra representative to come inspect the roof. The Decra representative told Rob (never actually spoke to us) that the roof looked fine to him and seeing the panel seams was normal. We feel as though this statement is false advertising because not a single picture on the Decra website has a hint of panel seams showing. We expected our roof to look like the normal roofs in the pictures on Decra's website. Rob also blamed us for picking the Decra material and then insinuated that the look of the roof was our fault since that was what we chose. We only chose this product because the RJI representative (Kyle) told us about it, showed us samples, and talked it up from an enviromental and warrantee standpoint. Rob's new solution was to buy new material only for the front section of the house (the section visible as we drive up to our house) and to add more screws to the rest of the roof panels. Yet, upon watching the workers complete the last phase of this project, we saw them pounding the panels into "shape" with hammers, caulking the spots where they had hammered the sand finish off, and pouring new sand on the spots. From the window in our son's room we can see the spots where sand was glued on to the panels; it LOOKS AWFUL. The roof from the back of our house still LOOKS TERRIBLE. Every seam is visible and still has that "peeling" look. The front section of the roof looks decent but still does not look as nice as it did on the Decra website or after the first installation. Rob never asked us if we were satisfied and instead started hounding us for payment. We feel stuck with a very expensive roof that was damaged due to RJI's inability to read the installation instructions from the start. Decra doesn't want to be responsible for anything so they are telling RJI that the roof is fine since it has the proper screws in it. RJI wants to be done and rid of us. We don't have a legal leg to stand on because the paper value of our house is not lowered by the look of the new roof. On top of the above problem, our yard was a wreck after RJI "completed" the roof. We filled a trash bag with soda cans and other trash that fell from the roof. We are still finding screws, nails, and other roofing materials (especially concerning with our two-year-old running around the yard). The workers also filled our trash, compost, and recycling cans with their personal trash (we have to pay extra if our trash can is overfilled). We would not recommend this roofing company to anyone due to their lack of knowledge on the product they pitched and sold to us and the unprofessional nature the workers continually displayed.
Description of Work: Replaced our wood shake roof with a metal Decra roof.
