Hello. :) Please completely read my bio before contacting me. Please contact me via direct email (akatileandstone@yahoo.com) or via text message at (720)256-4822. My service area is approximately a 15 mile radius from Arvada. James 'Jimmy' Strickler (formerly J & G Tile) has over 35 years of tile installation and remodeling experience. I have never used advertising as my business is based fully upon referral and call-backs. I am the sole owner/operator/installer, though on larger projects I will occasionally hire respectable laborers/sub contractors. No subs for tile work. I am personally there every workday throughout. I do everything right the first time, and I take extreme pride in my work. The demand for my services is based on quality of my installations, as well as constant communication with my clients. Cost is determined by individual needs of customer. Complete bathroom remodeling is my specialty. Plumbing and electrical included. I also use a dust evacuation system that eliminates 90+% of the dust caused by the construction process. Re-grouting and repairs however, are not something I typically do, as my skills are best used in new installations. Estimates within my service area and advice are always free. I pride myself on building a personal relationship with each and every customer I work with. By the end of a project, it is usually time for a hug. :) Jimmy Strickler DBA as AKA Tile and Stone.

Not good!
Description of Work: I contacted this contractor with a detailed listing of the work I needed on three bathrooms and he did get back to me right away by email. However, after I replied it took him a second contact from me before he responded again. Then, once he finally replied,I responded again, and never heard back from him. Maybe he is having problems, and just can't take on work right now. He could have at least let me know he wasn't available. Frankly, I am getting pretty discouraged with Angie's List. I do not want to babysit contractors and it seems like they all need that.

Description of Work: My husband and I wanted to save some money on demo. so we moved our washer/dryer to the garage and pulled up the old baseboard and linoleum in our laundry room and 12" tile in the entryway and downstairs half bath. We encountered some mold around the toilet and stopped and I called Jimmy right away. He said he would take care of it the next day. Jimmy and Paul removed hardyboard in our entryway from the garage, half bath and laundry room so that we could place new and even hardyboard so that we would have a smooth transition from each of the areas. Some of the subfloor around our toilet had deteriorated and was molded, presumably from a toilet leak years ago from the previous homeowners, and that had to come up too. Jimmy picked up new subfloor material and replaced the rotten subfloor around the toilet. He removed the old pedestal sink and old toilet. He placed the new porcelain slate tile, grouted with epoxy sealer grout that complimented the slate w/o taking away from it. He then installed a new watersense toilet (with a higher wax ring, so it wouldn't leak again) bathroom cabinet/sink and faucet. He also cut and placed new 5" baseboard in all areas and finished it with caulk and filled the nail holes too. Jimmy and Paul reinstalled our very heavy washer and dryer. They rehung the 3 doors and cleaned everything up very well. They both did a great job and were very professional, and helpful with picking up some items we needed like the subfloor, new waterlines to the sink, and an extra piece of baseboard that we were short on. They are very speedy workers without jeopardizing anything. Jimmy met us very early on the first day of work to get a key from us before we headed off to our jobs. He even called me on their last day of work on a morning when I was home, to see if I wanted anything for breakfast. So thoughtful and nice of him! Highly recommend without hesitation! Our actual cost was only $50.00 over the estimate, due to having to replace the area of subfloor under the toilet that we could not have forseen.

Jim's work was the best and easyist part our entire remodel project. He makes you feel comfortable with eveything he does. He knows what he's doing, explains it all to you, helps with recommendations, always communicates, and just takes care of things. And the quality is excellent. If you want a beautiful tile job hire Jim. He also did a bit of plumbing in another part of the house because he heard the toilet running and suggested that it'd be a quick and easy fix, and he made it that way. He's always happy. That's another nice bonus.
Description of Work: We built a Japanese bathroom, which you might call a wet room. One large room with a bath and shower. Built so that you can take a shower and then hop in the tub clean. Jim tiled the entire room, floor, ceiling, and walls, as well as the entry floor outside the wet area. He recommended, and we used travertine tile, and the results are fantastic.

The person who came out did write us a bid and it was very reasonable. We haven’t made a final decision yet. He is a one man shop and we are looking to try to get this done fairly quickly. The person who came out was very pleasant. He measured, gave us some good ideas and gave us a good bid. It was a free estimate. He gave us a bid, but he never followed up with us to see if we were interested or if we wanted to proceed. We would possibly consider getting an estimate from him in the future.
Description of Work: We received an estimate from J & G Tile/AKA Tile & Stone about a month and a half ago for general remodeling.

This remodel required significant ingenuity and creativity once demo began, as several other "re-modelers" had tried their hands at remodeling this bathroom over the past 40 years! My intent was to keep parts of the old bathroom intact so that I didn't lose the 1938 flavor, and then blend in the new in a way that didn't shout "new part"! This bathroom remodel was something I had wanted to do for years, and I am so pleased with the result. Demolition was more difficult than expected as the walls to be removed were concrete on metal lathe, and probably bomb-proof. Jimmy's solution was straight-forward and appropriate, and I am very happy with the result. Jimmy had to actually rebuild parts of the interior walls as previous remodelers had cut through the 2x4 supports so they could run their pipes where they wanted to. And, since he knew I wanted a semi-frameless shower enclosure (different contractor), he reinforced the portion of the wall where the shower door would hinge. Jimmy's tile work is absolutely beautiful. He takes great pride in the art and detail aspects of his work, and the results are simply smashing. Nothing in the tile area was "true" prior to the remodel (it was off ALOT), but it certainly is now. Jimmy coordinated with me on every aspect of this job, both planned and unforseen. He explained possible solutions to me in a way I understood (even if it took more than one time!). He provided options for cost savings that I could choose from - I felt involved and current with the entire project, and really enjoyed watching the transformation of this old bathroom. The unforeseen situations took time to reconcile, but the whole project was still within the time Jimmy had estimated. I will absolutely hire Jimmy for my next project!
Description of Work: 1938 vintage bathroom remodel. Work included: 1. demolition of tub/walls/floor - turns out the walls were concrete on metal lathe, a true chore to remove and replace. 2. Tiled concrete shower pan; 3. Floor tile with in-floor heating(!); 4. Marble (12x12) shower wall tile with decorative inserts; 5. Plumbing and fixtures (toilet, faucets, and fixed previous "spaghetti" plumbing attempts); 6. Associated electrical for bathroom fixtures.

He shows up when he says he's going to show up. Since this was our master bath, I was concerned about the mess of the project affecting our bedroom. I have to say, I have never had any worker in my house as conscientious about clean up as him. I felt like he left the area cleaner than he found it each day. Saw him vacuum and mop regularly. I also appreciated his attention to detail. It borders on OCD and that's a VERY good thing. Jimmy has a lot of skills, but his tiling is unbelievable. If you have a tile job, THIS is the guy you want to use.
Description of Work: We joined AL to find someone to help us w/ our master bath remodel. We got 3 bids. Jimmy's bid was prompt , accurate, and detailed. We had done the demo and had rough plumbing and electrical done, but with the exception of drywall and custom shower glass, he did everything else. As other customers have commented, he pointed out flaws in our plan and came up w/ several ways of improving it. Our remodel included new custom shower w/ floor to ceiling tile, custom shower glass (subbed out), sandstone tile bathroom floor, drywall w/ texture (subbed out), new vanity installed (tricky installation), countertop w/ backsplash and 2 undermount sinks installed, 2 recessed medicine cabinets installed, lighting installed, and all plumbing fixtures/finishes installed.

After reading such glowing reports here on Angie's List, I am having trouble believing that he's the same man who worked on my bath. After scheduling our project two months in advance, James was four days late in starting the job. He called daily putting us off claiming his current job was running over. Funny enough, when finishing our job was going to take one extra day he whined about having to postpone his next job. James originally quoted our job as taking one week to do. It took nearly five weeks, because James does not like to work more then 4 hours a day tops. And those would be the days he shows up at all. In the 5 weeks he was working on our project, he called or texted that he would not be coming 40% of the time. His excuses were illness, car troubles, late-night recording sessions, and once he took off to do a 3-day job in Boulder which he had not previously told us of. He also requested the job be paid in full nearly a week before he had finished, which I refused to do. When James was here, he blared loud music and was sloppy. He did not lay down any carpet protection. The carpet in our master bedroom is now a mess and will have to be professionally cleaned. He dribbled some sort of white liquid through our house and walked back by it three times eyeballing it but never cleaned it up. He would take frequent smoke breaks and leave cigarette butts on our front lawn. I was surprised at the end of the project to find that James only caulked the areas where stone met stone. He did not caulk the stone baseboard or where the stone met the ceiling in the shower. He told us we had to do it (lesson learned in getting EVERYTHING in writing). When repairing the subfloor beneath the toilet, James sliced through a PVC drain pipe. Once he had finished the job and we were able to use the bathroom, the pipe leaked onto our garage ceiling below. When I contacted him about the damage, he laid blame on the previous contractor without even coming out to inspect the area. My husband fixed the damaged pipe and will now have to replace the damaged ceiling drywall.
Description of Work: James was called in to take over the stone installation job of a previous contractor who had botched the job. The job was to install travertine tile on shower walls and the bathroom floor. James removed the existing stone and replaced the waterproof mesh backing it was adhered to. He re-installed the stone in the shower and then installed the stone on the bathroom floor including a 6" stone baseboard. He also removed and reinstalled the toilet and repaired the subfloor around the toilet. He installed new shower heads, valve trim, and sink taps.

Response from J & G Tile
Wow. I am speechless. I spent a week dwelling over this and wrote a long response, defending myself. There is not a single accurate statement in this report other than that I took over a job that was 'botched' by another. I don't believe that this is the place for this. I do believe that my reputation speaks for itself and that contacting any of my previous customers here will set the record straight. If potential customers would like to read my detailed rebuttal, feel free to email me at akatileandstone@yahoo.com Moving onward now. Thank you, James Strickler

I read on Angie's list that James would do small jobs. This was a very small job and I was so happy that someone would actually do. Everyone else had blown me off. James had several helpful suggestions about what could be done. The work was done well and I am very happy with the final result.
Description of Work: I needed a little work done on the grout and tiles in my bathroom.

James was impressive from the very start. He was quick to provide us with a thorough bid. Since we had not done a complete remodel in quite some time, he walked us through the whole process. When we had questions or needed guidence, he was usually available to us via his Blackberry. He kept us updated every step of the way with cute and fun emails. You can tell that he loves his work! He preformed this remodel during the absolute coldest week of our winter, doing his tile cutting and custom work in our garage - burrrrrr! We are so happy with our new bathroom. He is an extremely knowledgeable handyman and an absolute MASTER as laying tile.
Description of Work: James Strickler did a complete bathroom remodel, including the plumbing and electrical work (we did keep the existing toilet and tub.) First, James demolished the existing bathroom. Second, he adjusted the height of the plumbing in the shower to accommodate our taller family members. Third, he removed an old broken ceiling fan. He then repositioned the venting and electrical box to accommodate the new placement of the ceiling fan/light combo. Fourth, he layed subfloor and Hardibacker underlayment and then masterfully installed 12X12 floor tiles and bullnose trim. He then added reinforcement to the shower walls and ceiling, installed Denshield wallboard and installed 12X12 tiles to the walls and ceiling adding two custom porcelein shelves. At eye level in the shower, he installed a slate rock accent stripe. He then used an Epoxy (no maintenance) grout. Fifth, he custom made a vanity top using our 12X12 tiles. He also installed a custom slate rock backsplash. Again, he grouted with Epoxy. (We are all about low maintenance!) He placed the vanity (the plumbing had to be adjusted to accommodate the vanity we choose.) He placed our toilet, fixing the seal (which leaked before.) He installed the light fixture (3 times!) since we kept changing our mind on what we liked. He fixed the door and changed out the old hinges. He then installed the curved shower curtain rod. James had a drywall specialist repair our drywall and respackle the walls. Lastly, James did handyman projects around the house, like replacing the electrical light switch in our master closet, fixing the door to the garage, fixing the sink in our master bath and resetting and fixing our downstairs toilet.

WONDERFUL experience with James (Jimmy) Strickler from the beginning!!! Very professional on the telephone when interviewing different Angie's List Tilers and answered his phone immediately! Very helpful with his granite suggestions and how to go about the entire process. Very easy and pleasant to work with - my 2 boys even adored him! Showed up for work on time each morning and had an organized schedule. Jimmy's work is immpecable - very neat, crisp, and gorgeous. We love our new kitchen!!! Such an improvement from the old style white tiles with white grout! We are extremely satisfied with Jimmy's work and will call him again to do more work in our family room. He also wears different hats - plumber, electrician, handyman (as you read from above). We HIGHLY recommend Jimmy without a doubt! You WON'T be sorry if you call him!!!!

Overall, we could not be happier with Mr. Strickler's work.
Description of Work: My job consisted of replacing approximately 50 sq ft of travertine backsplash in my kitchen. I spoke with several tile setters, some whose name came from Angie's List, others were cold calls from the Yellow Pages. I chose James Strickler based upon his stated experience, the fact that he focuses solely on tile work, and a phone conversation I had with a reference he had provided. I have very limited experience setting tile myself, and did not want to tackle a decorative backsplash in an area that would be a focal point of the house. Mr. Strickler's work was worth every penny spent. He suggested a successful way to correct a minor defect created by the granite fabricator who had installed new countertops. His work clearly shows his experience and his creativity. Although my wife and I had already created the design we wanted for the backsplash, we were not sure it would be a good fit for the space between the countertops and the upper cabinets. After Mr. Strickler finished, we were amazed we were standing in our own kitchen rather than that of a show home from some magazine. His advice on grout joint width, color of grout, and sealant were spot on. He was punctual, very pleasant, and took care to avoid creating more mess than was necessary. I do not hesitate recommending him to anyone who wants the best at a very affordable price.

This is the second bathroom that J&G Tile has remodeled for me and as with the first, this one turned out beautifully as well. The tiler showed up when expected, finished the job on time and on budget. He had some great suggestions that improved my original design. I have one more bathroom to re do and I will be calling J&G Tile.

He did a really nice job. He did what I asked him to do. He came up with some suggestions that were so much better than what I had thought of. His suggestions really didn't cost any more money than what I had thought of. It turned out really beautiful. He cleaned up after himself every day. I appreciated him not leaving a mess. He was a nice guy. He would talk to me and listen to my suggestions. When I asked him for a quote, he was here the next morning to give me one. Some of the other providers that I had asked about giving me a quote didn't even call or show up. Some of the others did call me back like two weeks later, and that just was not acceptable to me. For the work that he did, his price was absolutely an A.

Wonderful experience with James and J & G tile. James provided a detailed estimate with several options. He was excellent at calling/communicating prior to the date of the work, and his work was absolutely perfect. The backsplash looks wonderful, and we couldn't be happier. We have worked with several contractors on different projects since purchasing our house eight months ago, and this was the best experience I've had. I'll hire James for any tile projects I have in the future, and would recommend him to family and friends. Thanks, James!!!
Description of Work: James installed a glass and stone backsplash in our small kitchen. Job included prep work and patching of walls, cutting, placing, and fitting glass/stone mosaic tile, and grouting.

James Strickler takes his work seriously. He has high standards and did more than we contracted for because he thought it would look better. He didn't charge us extra money for these things. He re-wired one of the spotlights in the kitchen that wasn't working. He moved a vent from the floor to under the sink so that it wouldn't show with the new tile. He put more rows of tiles on the backsplash because he said it would look better (he was right - it really did.) He installed the floor tiles in the downstairs bathroom in a diamond pattern because he thought it would make the room look bigger and more upscale. He put tile up the wall in place of the old baseboards. He put in three undercounter spotlights in the kitchen to draw attention to the new backsplash. He is a gem. PS He loves animals. None of this cost any more than the original estimate.
Description of Work: James Strickler, the sole owner, installed new tile floors in three bathrooms, the kitchen and the laundry room. He also installed tile on the kitchen backsplash. In addition, he installed a door frame and door into one of the bathrooms.

Response from J & G Tile
This project was a typical remodel where the builder lowered initial costs by installing carpet in baths and vinyl in kitchen/laundry. The upgrade of these requires special care to protect existing carpet and transition to new height of tile floor with underlayment. Carpet masking over all pathways and floating of floor up to edge of tile. Baseboards were removed, repainted and reinstalled where needed. Master bath baseboard would have looked out of place with the existing tub deck so I installed tile base there. Cabinet toe-kicks were also tiled. All door jambs were undercut to avoid "remodel" look. All toilets were removed and reset with new mounting hardware and supply lines. This home was occupied so work had to be completed in two phases to provide at least one completely functional bath at all times. Hours of work were adjusted to work with homeowners schedule. A heat/cooling register was originally placed in an uncomfortable position slightly under dishwasher and protruding into walkway, so I relocated it via basement into underside of sink cabinet and vented out the toe-kick face. The homeowner mentioned unhappiness with not having a door to the master bathroom. Layout of the tile floor was dependent upon transition at this opening so adding a door later would involve tile demolition and a full tile transition would not be possible. I installed and painted new door to avoid this. In the kitchen, an existing 4" laminate splash was removed and replaced with mosaics. This very attractive tile would have not have been as effective with the dim lighting under the upper cabinets so I installed three under cabinet xenon fixtures with switch in wall before tile. This is an ideal time as wiring is hidden from view under wallboard before tile and avoids additional finish repair and cabinet intrusion. A small gap was left between back-splash and existing counter-top. This will make possible the extraction of old tops without damage to tile as homeowner intends to replace tops later in the future. All painted walls were closely checked for any damage and touched up where needed. Any flaws in existing paint/drywall were fixed at this time. Upon completion of work our workspace in garage was cleaned and rinsed. I try as much as possible to protect surfaces during work and leave in same or better condition than when I arrived. The only problem on this job was a sad kitty that had to be locked in a room during kitchen floor installation. Poor kitty!! :)

Great!
Description of Work: James was pleasant, polite, on time, easy to reach, but most important he did an excellent job at a great price in my small kitchen in a 1920's house. Installed tile backsplash, but while doing so recommended adding under counter lighting and was very clever and skilled in how he accomplished this. I asked him back to install a new sink, faucets and some additional lighting. I plan to hire him again for some bathroom work. I was interested in updating in a thrifty manner and he was just the guy. Very happy with the work. I even paid him more than he billed as I thought it was fair.

I needed to have my masterbath redone due to a botched job previously done by another contractor. Jim showed up the day after I called and gave a very realistic estimate. He was honest about what could and could not be done. He and is partner Greg, did all the demo, tiling, and even installed a new medicine cabinet. They showed up when they said they would, cleaned up after themselves and I never felt intruded upon. The job took longer than expected, but that was due to me changing my mind and them very cheerfully doing what I asked.
